Hank is one of the nicest gentleman I have met when I first came to Indy. I've been free cleaning his business throughout the years and it's always delicious. My favorite is the smoked corn beef and I usually get the loaded baked potato with the brisket, which is amazing. They are very supportive of the neighborhood and they remember you when you come by. I would tell anyone to try them out. It's a cute little pick up spot no place to eat, but you can get to go orders pretty quickly love both of them. Their desserts are good too. read more

I am continuing my BBQ tour of Indianapolis and today was the day I tried Hank's Smoked Briskets. This is a hole in the wall and carry-out. There are no tables inside. I walked in and was greeted with a friendly "hello". Then I told the lady that I had traveled all the way from Alabama to try the brisket. Her face lit up and she brought out everybody to meet me including Hank! They followed it up by giving me a sample of brisket and corned beef. Both were juicy and delicious. I had already made my mind up about brisket but I would recommend the corned beef too! I chose the brisket plate as it came with a brisket sandwich and 2 sides. I chose potato salad and Mac and cheese. I also requested more sauce and they happily gave me a 4 oz container of sauce. The brisket was tender, juicy, and fresh! It mixed well with the slightly sweet, all smoky, and mild peppery sauce. I enjoyed the potato salad as much as I did the brisket! The potato salad was far superior to the mac and cheese. I loved the creaminess and the tanginess of the mustard and dill. The mac and cheese was solid though. It's a hole in the wall with nowhere to sit. I carried out from Hanks Smoked Brisket today. I used to frequent this place when I worked at Methodist Hospital and missed it. Good news is, the quality of the food or the congeniality of Hank has not diminished. I got the smoked beef brisket sandwich - a hearty portion of brisket with good smoke flavor and very tender served on a bun. I chose to get the sauce on the side so I could savor the taste of the brisket. Probably the best smoked brisket north of Hank's home state of Texas. I've tried their ribs and sides I wasn't the biggest fan of them but the bbq sauce is so good. The apple pie and peach cobbler are really good but it's a little too much crust and not enough fruit for me. We wanted some good barbecue on our way home from a road trip and were passing through Indianapolis. We saw Hanks on Yelp, and decided since it was only a few minutes off course we'd stop. It's kinda hood but was busy so we were feeling optimistic. My husband got the brisket dinner and I got rib tips. We both did baked beans and Mac n cheese. The baked beans tasted like Bush's jazzed up, and I'm not complaining. The mac was delish. The ribs were fatty, but I still am not complaining. We loved everything. Now I'm not going to take a star off, but they need some saran wrap between the tops of the sides containers and the food. 2 of the sides were stacked in the bag, and I had to pick shattered plastic out of the top of my mac. Not cool or appetizing. Lastly that cobbler, baby? It is delicious. It is buttery and rich and delicious. I'd roll back through if we're in Indy again. read more

The best-smoked brisket in Indy, HANDS. DOWN! I had a co-worker from Texas lament that he could not find good brisket in Indy. I said "Well, there's Hank's on MLK on the westside of Indy" He replied: "It won't be good, no one can do good brisket in Indy!" I pulled up Hank's website and read the "About Us" section: "Originally from Henderson, Texas, a city of about 12,000 people approximately 120 miles east of Dallas, Fields moved to Indianapolis in February of 1973. For many years, he yearned for a taste of his home. Ten Years ago, Hank threw in the towel and decided to bring that taste of Texas to Indy." I got a good chuckle out of that! Hank's can be intimidating to someone who has not been before. It resembles a Dentist or Doctors office with a small sitting area and a wall mounted T.V., very odd if you have not been before. There is a small window where you can place your order and they will write it down on a notepad. There are some printed menus but I suggest looking online before you enter so you have a better idea of what you want to order. I'm not too sure about all the business cards all over the place, it seems people are leaving them to try and advertise? Weird. As noted in other reviews it is take out only, and it's not fast food so expect to wait 10-15 mins while they prepare your food. Sit and watch some T.V. or browse the hundreds of business cards stuck everywhere, or heck, leave your business card to add to the collection! Very disappointing, I've been to Hanks numerous times. Thursday afternoon around 3 o'clock I ordered a pound of brisket and a pound of corned beef. I paid 40+ dollars which I don't care if it's good but when I got home 75% of the brisket was sliced with the grain and mostly fat. The corned beef also was cut with the grain maybe 50% fat. Did not look like the staff knew what they were doing. Please fix this you are better than this!! read more

We ended up going with a "hot potato" (baked potato topped with brisket, cheese, sour cream, bbq sauce and jalapeños), pulled pork sandwich, half slab of ribs and mac n cheese and baked beans on the side.
