Really wanted to try and support local businesses. Always got pizza next door, so decided to give it a chance. My uncle was excited and saw the prices on line. We were planned on a family outing with my uncle buying, got there to place the order, and when asked about the on line pricing, they said they couldnt honor them, and only regular posted prices was our choices. Really disappointing. Brisket was chopped, dry and tasteless. It was like eating chopped shoe leather. My husband's said his chicken was okay. Our sauces were good, but they were more like "mopping" sauces, and very thin. Sides were okay. Everything was kind of expensive. French fries were somewhat plain. This is a no frills barbecue joint that has limited days and hours that they are open. This restaurant has been on my list of joints to visit for a long time and I am glad that I was able to finally check it out. There is a decent amount of parking available in the lot that it shares with the other business in the strip mall that it is located. Normally at a barbecue restaurant you see a big smoker filling the air with the aroma of barbecue. This place did not have that, but that was ok. They have a strange set up here, but it works. You place your order at the counter and then they ask you to wait outside until they call your order number over their exterior PA. There are a couple of tables in the restaurant, but if you cannot wait for your food inside, I doubt they are allowing dine-in. They have hip-hop music playing in the restaurant, but you are really not in there that long to enjoy it. The woman working during my visit was friendly enough. She was strictly business, efficient and to the point. I ordered a small order of rib tips with a small side of potato salad, baked beans, and mac & cheese. You choose from hot, sweet, or regular barbecue sauce to go with your meat. I went with the hot. It took about 8 minutes for them to call my number as I sat out in my car. I picked up my food off of a metal rack that they had set up inside. They do offer a frequent customer punch cards, where you purchase 5 dinners and you get the 6th free (up to a $14 value). My food was pretty good. My rib tips were savory, tender, and flavorful. The side were also good. The baked beans had a brown sugary taste and was the perfect consistency. The potato salad was good, but I have had better. The macaroni was flavorful as well and was extra cheesy, like I like it. You can definitely tell that it is freshly home made. This is a decent spot to find some "Q". You will probably have to plan your trip here since they are primarily open only on weekends. They have some good food. read more

I was in the mood for some tips and this place did not disappoint me. I got a large rib tip dinner with potato salad and baked beans and everything was delicious. I was pleased and surprised by the size of the dinner, including the sides. The tips were tender and juicy. The potato salad was mustard based and tasted so fresh. It had a unique sweet dill flavor. The baked beans were right on time. I ended up here because my first place ran out of meat.... The staff here are awesome. You place your order and then go sit in your car and wait form them to contact you. I ordered rib tips with sauce on the side. Sometimes sauce hides the imperfections of either not being smoked or seasoned well. Not the case here: the ribs were tender, smoky and seasoned well. We pay $40 for a meal. When I picked it up and felt pretty light. When we got home and spread out the food it was literally a meal for one person. Absolutely super small portions for the money. I probably would have to spent $100 just to be the three of us. I don't mind spending money for good food, but it needs to be a two way street. And most barbecue places or a little more generous with their portions imo. It tasted pretty good, I would eat it again, but I wouldn't just because I'll be going broke. I had a BBQ craving and Yelp helped me find my way to Garrett's, which is easy to forget about since its tucked in a small strip mall. I hadn't had ribs in a while and decided to order a rack, some pulled brisket and two large sides; mac & cheese and greens. I was told that the ribs wouldn't be ready for another half hour, so I ordered a side of Fried Green Tomatoes and told them I didn't mind the wait. The cashier was pleasant and asked if I had a frequent shoppers card. She explained the program and punched my receipt to bring back on my next visit. I sat patiently and several people came in after me for take out orders. Before long, my tomato order was up and piping hot. They were breaded in a crunchy cornmeal seasoning and tangy to the taste. I'm glad I ordered them, as I'd skipped lunch and needed something to tide me over. You get a whole tomato, which is about 7 slices. Not bad at all for $3.95! The dining room was empty, but had plenty of room for guests, including groups, to gather. The counter was full of tempting dessert options to satisfy your sweet tooth. I enjoyed sitting and had more order in hand in no time. It came with my choice of bread, so I tried the cornbread, which was really good and complemented the meal. The greens were seasoned nicely and the ribs were meaty and flavorful. The mac and cheese wasn't as creamy as I like, but in my mind, its akin to pizza, difficult to dislike. I have been trying to visit a lot of restaurants that I have not been to before. Garrett's Smokehouse is one of those places that I have seen in my trips around the 56th & Fall Creek area. I remember when this restaurant was 56th Street Fish Market (now Caplingers) many years ago as that was my go to place for fresh seafood. I decided today was a good day to try Garrett's because they has a special for St. Patty's day. I love corned beef and only get it smoked from one other place in Indy on the west side. I love going to small family owned restaurants for meals because usually you will always get just plain good food. Might not be award when in presentation like on TV but the taste is reminiscent of a good home cooked meal. Garrett's hit that for me. The corned beef was tender and not greasy as some corned beef can be. Cabbage and red skinned potatoes made the perfect side dishes seasoned well. We try to support local when possible. I've driven by here many times. Unfortunately the food was super disappointing and expensive for the quality. Shredded brisket was super dry. Not sure why it has to be offered only shredded instead of offering slices. Smoked wings were over smoked to the point of barely being able to eat (yes, I love smoked wings from other places) BBQ sauce was pitched and just used our own. Sides are super expensive for the sizes of what you get. Mac and cheese was dried up and oddly seasoned. Green beans were pure mush and too salty to eat. Greens were under cooked and nasty. Service was kind of slow. The ribs are pretty salty and I think they were just warmed up. I'm used to Texas Barbeque where the meat is kept in low temperature pit and they cut you off what you order, then throw the rest back in the pit. The sauces were good. The brisket was alright. Garrett's Smokehouse is another hit-or-miss, black-owned business that needs to have consistent cooks and grillers for its patrons to be accustomed to a specific taste. A desirable and delectable experience the first time has not necessarily been the same event the following time, according to my friends and me. I know some people who had a bad experience the first time with rubbery meat cooked tough. The barbeque joint is ran by a husband and wife team with the wife's brothers moonlighting for $10 an hour. Cooking/grilling is not her brothers' forte; when they are there, that is when the food tastes the worst and sometimes doesn't have a taste at all. Maybe they should stick to cleaning. Her brothers and husband smoke weed at the back of the business, too. Garrett's Smokehouse needs to hire and to train qualified persons who are not relatives, who are professional, who are passionate about pleasing, and who are skilled. read more

So I'll start this off like I did my first check in, I LOOOVVVVEEEEE BBQ. I don't know how Im just finding out about this place and I've been living here going on 3 years now. This hands down is the best BBQ spot in the city when it come to ribs. I couldn't give them 5 stars just because I have to try something different. The ribs were cook to damn near perfection and the tips are nice and meaty. The sauces are great and have nice consistency as a pose to the other BBQ spots here with runny sauces. The side are good too, I've tried the greens, Mac and cheese, as well as baked beans so far. My girl friend tried the smoked wings which were on point as well. After this second trip and the food was just as good as the first trip I'll definitely be back for more!! So now that I've been to garrett's I can give them the extra star they deserve. The Customer service is great from the greeting at the door to receiving your food. Since the first trip I've tried the smoked wings which have become a favorite when I'm on this side of town. I've also tried the brisket and pull pork both great choices. I love the sweet sauce too just right for my liking, every now and then I get the hot but sweet is my go to. Found this spot searching through Yelp after recently moving. It was pretty quiet when we stopped in at noon on a rainy Saturday. Grabbed 2 pulled pork sandwiches, Mac n cheese, sweet potato fries and spicy cole slaw. The service was super friendly, food took about 20 minutes. The pork was very good, should have asked for the bun to be toasted. The sweet potato fries were our favorite and had the perfect amount of cinnamon sugar for flavoring.
