In much the same fashion as the ever-unpopular Ann Sather remains on the Michelin's Bib Gourmand list, someone from Chicago Magazine must owe Hanna's Bretzel a bag of rent. There is nothing impressive about the #31 Serrano Ham and Manchego Cheese sandwich on their top 50 list. I suppose the conscious effort to state multiple times on the website that everything is organic, green, sustainable, steroid free, environmentally friendly and so forth is commendable. In fact, my sandwich was stated as 48% organic, leaving the other 52% as meth infused pesticides and bovine tranquilizers. There was nothing exciting about the combination of ingredients. Usually a rockin' sandwich is more than sum of it's parts, but this sandwich was exactly the sum of it's parts. Being a typical non-German speaking American troglodyte, I figured that Über meant large. On the website these sandwiches look like titans, reaching nearly end to end on my 22" screen. I thought I was going to need a wheelbarrow to roll my leftovers out the door. That is just not the case at all. The skinny 7" pretzel roll was barely enough to make a dent in my ravenous hunger. The assembly line preparation style is eerily similar to a Subway except every additional ingredient costs me extra freedom. The website does do an effective job of articulating the definition Über as forward thinking and industry leading. Whatevs, I just wanted a sandwich with moderate to severe thyroid problem. I will return and undoubtedly enjoy my next experience. I did appreciate the freshly cut meat and all the fresh ingredients prepared in front of me. I didn't have *very* many pregnancy cravings, but I'm fairly certain I could've sent my newest bundle of joy to med school free & clear with the amount of kizzy I dropped at Hannah's Bretzel during those nine gloriously hungry months. The veggie bomb is, well, the bomb. It's deliciousness piled high, but the whole grain pretzel bread is the true star of the show. I'll be honest & tell you that yeah, you can totally tell the difference in their bread as far as if you're eating it fresh out of the proverbial oven or...maybe, um, if that's not so much the case. But even still, we've eaten here an embarrassingly ridiculous number of times & I've never had "bad" bread. The barley soup is perfectly mild so if you're not a fan of the timid, skip it; the potato chips are handmade and have a very lemon/pepper feel--they are not to be missed! Service is usually pretty good & this spot starts serving lunch at 10:00AM. They move quickly but lines can be rather long. You will not be overwhelmed by the amount of food you receive, but honestly...it a perfectly acceptable portion. I know a LOT of people feel it's a bit pricey and yeah, I can't deny that. But--BUT!--it's quality food. You get what you pay for. Sure, I could get a tattoo for $25.00 somewhere, but I'd much rather shell out some dough for something that won't sicken me later, you know? I very much enjoyed my lunch at Hannah's Bretzel today! Popped in with some co-workers for a new lunch experience near the office. As a first timer, I was a bit confused as to where the line started for placing our order (seemed a bit backwards to me). The menu was pretty straight forward though, so that at least made ordering easy! Danny W suggested the portabella + goat cheese sandwich. All I had to hear was goat cheese and I'm in! It was a brisk walk over to Hannah's so I also got a small cup of tomato bisque soup to warm up. Both were absolutely delicious. The sandwich I got includes roasted portabella mushrooms, white truffled goat cheese, roasted red peppers, organic baby arugula and rosemary-infused asparagus on an organic whole grain baguette. Oh you fancy, huh? That's right. They don't call themselves uber sandwich makers for nothin! With a sandwich order you get the choice of either a bag of chips or almonds. I stayed on the healthy train and went with the almonds, which came in a super cute little individual cup with a lid. Next time I'll try the chips - they looked homemade. The tomato basil bisque was a nice touch. I highly suggest it. This snazzy cup of delicious warmth includes san marzano tomatoes, tomato puree, fresh basil leaves, basmati rice, organic carrots, celery, fresh peeled garlic, organic onions, cream, non-GMO olive oil and housemade organic croutons. This place is new and all about keeping it healthy and environmental friendly. Seems like a lot of places like that Protein Bar, not to far from this place, works on the same theme. Sandwiches are moderately priced. I split a sirloin sandwich and we got broken chips (also can get a side of nuts instead) but i like chips more) for 8 something dollars. You can get water in a real glass too! Never have had a self serving water like that before, cool first time experience. As your checking out, you will chocolate bars from all over the world and expensively priced. I would get it for my parents as a gift sometime. I thought that was pretty neat. Quick, healthy and delicious sandwich shop chain. They also sell chocolates and coffee. Their large seating area is great for working, especially since they offer free (fast) WiFi. I ordered the Veggie Bomb sandwich on my way to the Loop. The lady who prepared my sandwich worked quickly and was very friendly. I took my sandwich down the counter and paid the cashier $8 and sat in the sunny seating area. The Veggie Bomb was served on a whole wheat baguette. It had cucumbers, tomatoes, sprouts, avocado and a honey Dijon sauce. It was simple but oh, so delicious! I was able to eat the whole thing in one sitting and thankfully wasn't left feeling sluggish. I mean....WOW....where do we start. Wonderful menu, whatever mood you're in, they gotchu. I went with the Sergio's Special...flavor was wildin' and the pretzel bun was nice and crispy even after getting back to eat. Staff....GREAT! Placed a pickup order in the middle of lunch, showed up way too early and they whipped it up for me in 2 minutes. Couldn't eat outside but nice outdoor seating. So about 40 min's ago we paid $21 for 2 turkey sandwiches & 2 small bags of chips. There was only 3 thin slices of turkey on each sandwich and a crazy, yucky amount of orange sauce on each one to the point of being inedible.The guy doing it didn't even give me a chance to tell him to go easy on it, he just hulked that bottle 4 times on each sandwich. He also could have cared less he didn't even cover the whole sandwich with turkey (3 thin slices doesn't cover much), he looked at it and literally gave a shrug & an internal "meh". 2 sandwiches barely eaten & tossed into the garbage. I never thought tomato bisque could have been so creamy and perfect with my mango something sandwich. Food is made fast. Service is good. Took a break from Hannah's Bretzel because I wasn't the biggest fan at the time, now after some time away I have to say they serve some pretty tasty food. I tried the Italian Bresaola with avocado and white truffled goat cheese - it also has baby argula, shaved fennel, and dijon mustard vinaigrette. The beef is shaved super thin and almost resembles prosciutto. I also ordered a small black bean, corn, and avocado salad. The sandwich along with the salad were superb, add in the pleasant outdoor seating area and I'd grade my lunch an A+. read more

I hate coming in here only to have to wait wait wait wait not for customers in front of me but for the staff who are making food for customers who are not there in person. It's unfortunate that I'm writing this review but I feel this needs to be addressed. My problem is not with the food but with the service. I go up to order my meal and the woman taking orders and preparing the food notified that lunch isn't being served at this time, so reluctantly I ordered something I didn't want. Everyone has a bad day and today is the Chicago Marathon so I'm sure she saw more cliental then she cared for but this shouldn't be taken out in the customers. When I go to pay for my meal I notified the manager of my encounter with the food prep woman. He told me we are serving lunch now. So from the time ordered my breakfast sandwich to the check out lunch menu is now available. What cooks me the most is she could have told me lunch isn't being served right now but we will in a few minutes. I would have waited. Instead I settled and that's all my fault, the lesson for me folks is never settle especially when you are paying for it. It takes one shitty attitude to ruin in for the bunch. Food is great! Our firm regularly orders delivery from here. We had one issue recently where a vendor had ordered lunch for a meeting at our office. The food never arrived and he never received a phone call. It turns out that someone else in the building from a different company claimed the order. The delivery person didn't verify the recipient before handing over the order. I called the catering department and explained the situation. At first, they offered 35% off the next order but then offered a 50% refund. In my opinion, the cost of the entire meal should have been offered or a replacement order. I love the fresh ingredients. I love the assembly line. I love how clean it is. I love feeling European posh one block from the Brown Line. I love being surrounded by expensive imported chocolate that I won't buy while I'm waiting to order my lunch. I do not love that skinny sandwiches are $10. I do not love that the "side of roasted veggies" is like...the 2 carrots that were swept off the floor and put into a small container. I do not love that the side of chips contains approximately 7 crisps. I do not like that the bread dominates the other components of the sandwich. I love Hannah's Bretzel, but I hate the service. This issue is not consistent between locations though. This location at 400 N LaSalle won't let you buy a sandwich in the morning, they ignore you when you say, "but the other location lets me buy morning sandwiches..." They just keep repeating, "We are serving breakfast, we are serving breakfast..." I usually buy a sandwich from Hannah's Bretzel 1: because they have a gluten free option and I really do love the food, and 2: when I know I won't be able to leave the office all day and want to have a decent lunch - not something out of the vending machines. Last Thursday - the location at Monroe and Clinton - no problem getting a sandwich in the morning. Darn, why didn't I order a large sandwich on pretzel bread? Today was my first visit to Hannah's. I've heard great things about it and was psyched to check it out. I wasn't super hungry, so my eye went directly to the tomato bisque soup, but then I ended up going with a small Vegetable Bomb (veggie sandwich) on their whole grain Wecken roll. First of all, I loved all the fresh veggies with cucumbers, tomato, avocado, watercress, baby arugula, and vinaigrette. But let me tell you, that little *bun* didn't come close to filling me up. I call it a bun, because it seemed just a little bit bigger than a large dinner roll. On to the bread. It would have been great by itself, but in honesty it made the sandwich pretty impossible to eat. Their roll is also hearty and tasty, but it was really difficult to bite into, and I know this sounds weird, but the top of the bread isn't flat and every bite ended up being at a weird angle and tricky to maneuver - ha! I know it sounds ridiculous, but I have to admit to getting more of the sandwich outside of my mouth. Next time I'm getting it on a pretzel roll. I would definitely order this same sandwich again. Just pretty small...and for the price...I was a bit taken back, but it's the city. Overall, the menu is large and everything looked great. They even offer special breakfast dishes. The shelf with all the chocolates was super tempting, and now I'm kicking myself for not purchasing. This is a review based entirely on service, because I've finally had it with this location. Sorry, but spending $10 on a sandwich is not worth it when all you're met with is attitude and dirty looks. The head sandwich maker here is an absolute nightmare; he's rude to his customers, he's rude to his staff, he acts like the world is ending every time someone places an order. The rest of the staff isn't much better though; don't even bother trying to order more than one sandwich without being treated like a freak. I work as an assistant and consistently need to get lunch for my boss and others with short notice, so I don't always have time to put in an order ahead of time. Today I went in and said I needed 2 sandwiches and 2 salads and the guy behind the counter was so rude to me that I wanted to leave. Sorry, I don't need your attitude on top of all of the other stuff I have on my plate. "You need 4 things? And didn't put an order in ahead of time? Well I'm going to need to go get another person to help me out." And then I could hear him shouting for someone in the back to come out because "someone needs multiple things" (shouted in a condescending tone, nonetheless). Like really? I was the only person in line at the time other than my friend who had come with me. By the way, if you want people to call in their orders ahead of time, you should make it easier. All of the Hannah's list the exact same phone number and if you want to reach an individual store, you have to call the number, explain what you want and where you want to order from, and only then do you get transferred to the individual store to place your order. Definitely wastes some time and it's super annoying. Plus once I did actually call to place an advance order for 6 things and they told me I should just come in. Then when I actually went in, they said I should've placed an advance order (in a snotty tone, obviously). Whatever. Make up your damn minds. I get that working at a sandwich shop might not be super fulfilling, but don't be an ass. I have to do tons of things I don't want to do on a daily basis and I do it with a smile on my face because that's part of being an adult. The saving grace of this place is one of the women who works at the cashier; she is a sweetheart and always chats with me and tries to make up for the fact that the rest of the staff is insane. Love her. Once my friend came in and asked for extra sauce on her sandwich and one of the sandwich makers yelled at her (not even exaggerating). He said it was basically outrageous that she would request extra sauce because each sandwich is made a certain way. I'd heard of this place before and everyone starts salivating/jumping on the bandwagon of enthusiasm when someone mentions Hannah's Bretzel. I was never THAT compelled to check it out but since it was a team lunch, there we were, walking to my first lunch at Hannah's Bretzel. I had a prosciutto and cheese sandwich on one of those pretzel buns. Pretzel buns are just ok to me. I appreciate prosciutto and get that it's expensive but I noticed almost every other sandwich on the menu was about the same price. The sandwich came with a side of chips/soy nuts/almonds. The almonds are roasted in some kind of cheese mixture and dang they were good. BUT. I REPEAT. $9.95 for a sandwich?! That doesn't even include tax which in Chicago is like 1 million percent so each sandwich not including any extras is like $12. Nope nope nope. Will leave this one for the sheep. I am a Hannah's believer, and I loooooooove this location. It's big and way less cramped than the other locations in the Loop. I have never had a sandwich I haven't liked, but the Parma is perfection! Everyone is super nice, and we make this a frequent part of our weekend routine. They even have gluten free and vegan options that actually taste great. I have picked up several loaves of their gluten free bread for my grandfather because he loves sandwiches and has the hardest time finding gluten free bread that tastes even remotely decent. Hannah's has a great recipe! And if you're looking for chocolate, they have the coolest selection of chocolate bars! If you've never tried it, then you are definitely missing out. Do it! P.S. I would just like to address the reviews that say the portions are too small. I am a little shocked actually. I think the portioning is perfect! Plus the ingredients are fresh and top notch. If you're looking for some XL super sized whatever, then stick to fast food. You will definitely be fine with a sandwich and chips or a half sandwich and salad or soup. A good option if you're in the Merchandise Mart/River North area and want a fancy sandwich. A bit pricey but a nice way to treat yo' self with healthier, organic ingredients. All the sandwiches are pretty good, but I have a special place in my heart for the Thanksgiving 365. (Put cranberry chutney on anything and I'm there!) The sando portions are tiny though, so order a soup. The corn quinoa is damn good. Line moves fairly quickly even during the busy lunch hour and though I usually take it to go, I've been able to find a seat if I'm dining in. The sandwiches aren't cheap, but they are fresh and delicious. You definitely get what you pay for. HB used to serve roasted veggies as a side, but now I think you have to pay for them separately. I've seen Hannah's Bretzel on many trips to one of my favorite restaurants in the city, Kinzie Chophouse, and when I was in the city doing some shopping one morning, I decided a breakfast sandwich was in order and gave it a try. There was nobody inside at around 9:30 on a weekday the weekend after Christmas. It was at this time I opted to take my order to go rather than be the only one inside the place, by myself. I, like a few other reviewers have mentioned, was a little puzzled by the ordering/line process. Thankfully there were no regulars behind (or in front of) me. After looking at the handheld menu, I settled on a bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich on a pretzel roll. The sandwich itself was absolutely delicious. The combination of a fresh-cooked (literally right in front of you) egg, with high quality nitrate-free bacon, with a very sharp tasting white cheddar cheese, all in between an absolutely amazing pretzel roll, was epic, to say the very least. The only things I was a little disappointed in were the size and the price of the sandwich. It was pretty small, almost "slider"-sized and cost me over $4 after tax. Don't get me wrong, this is River North and one shouldn't usually be afraid to pay at least $10 for a meal at almost anywhere here. That said, at $4, I wasn't quite full after this sandwich, but I can definitely appreciate the quality of what Hannah's Bretzel is cooking up. Speaking of quality, this is precisely what the sandwich was. Hannah's Bretzel very clearly and accurately advertises the use of natural, sometimes organic, sustainable, environmentally-friendly, etc, types of products/business practices at its stores. For me, Hannah's Bretzel is the utopian vision of what "fast food" should be. I love Hannah's Bretzel! I've been going for years and I've been to several locations. I always get a half sandwich and a small Ella's salad, but change up the salad. I cannot vouch for how good their bread is, however, because I actually order their gluten free bread! That's the first thing that drew me in - that they offered gluten free, which is a rarity for sandwich places anywhere in the city. I also love all their sandwich options, they have so many I usually have a hard time choosing! It was not horrible, but it wasn't as great as I had hoped, either. The staff was helpful and knew their menu, and made my order well. Thing is...the selection was not all that great. I have gut issues, and need non-seasoned, non-filler, basically...whole, unadulterated food. So for instance: if a menu item is chopped up and "reformed" into a shape....and so forth, chances are it's got fillers in it that can't be taken out. Or, let's say a chicken breast, for example; if it's marinated, the spices used on it can't be taken out, et cetera. I wound up choosing a deli sandwich that, by design, has a lot of things on it that I had to exclude. And...there weren't other things (low-FODMAP food) to choose from that could be substituted in place of the things that normally went on it. And yes, I got it in a lettuce wrap, no bread. Why? Because their gluten-free bread is made in such a way that I can't eat it. Sucks, right? It would have been great to see a low-FODMAP bread (my medical diet) available for a change, but this isn't a big deal. Lettuce wrap was good. Man, I miss bread though.... So. Good place, just not a large selection of food for those of us that have to eat low-FODMAP. read more

Good tasting sandwich (I tried the goat cheese and mushroom one) but very small for the price. I got the full size sandwich for $10 or so but it is far from a filling sandwich. So I got the barley soup to complement my meal which ran me $5. The soup was very bland and pretty inedible. To summarize: very small portion sizes for what they charge. I spent $15 an hour ago and am still hungry. Definitely not coming back. read more
