Nice quaint spot. My coworker and I went there for dinner. The place is just like I like it. It is a mom-pop off the beaten path. It was recommended to me by the bellman in our hotel. When you come in you're greeted by staff who's very friendly and cordial. Just take a seat and wait. The only problem with this place is that if it's busy you need patience. It's also a take out spot. The lady who greeted us was doing it all too. The food was great! I had baked turkey wings and gravy, Lima beans, and cabbage with cornbread. All of it is good! This place is an absolute riot! Although they close fairly early, it was full on party mode on a Thursday night. The shrimp was delicious. Served with both hot and tartar sauces. And the crab rice - I don't know how the heck they cook that rice, but it was decadent. My husband also enjoyed his fried fish. Of the 3 options, don't pass on the rice. Best food I had in Charleston, by far! Everything was divine (the word I used while eating it ). One of the best fried pork chops I've had in life, and the gravy schmacked. The rice special was really good and you gotta add the fried shark. Oh, and def don't sleep on the cornbread! We took some for the road. The woman workin was great, helpful and added to the general great, hospitable atmosphere. In Charleston for the day, and decided to visit Hannibal's for dinner. Well a note is pasted on the door saying "we're closing at 6 pm today reopening Jan 3". The door is ajar and we're yelling "hello". In comes Darryl. He was friendly and explained they're not open today, the note is a mistake. He then proceeds to ask the owner to make us some food. Amazing soul food joint right outside of downtown. The place is a little out of the way and nothing fancy but don't let that dissuade you! We ordered the crab and rice plate, Lima beans, collards, and Mac and cheese. They were all excellent. Most entrees fun literally $7 for a large portion and 2 sides. When I placed my order I was under the impression that I would get what the menu read, "turkey wings" what I got was one turkey wing. Okay before we start let me just warn you especially tourists from out of town like me, this place is not a visually appealing place. When we got here we were very concerned about the area as its not a place we would enter in. The outside is dingy and the inside is dark and no frills to say the least. Its not a fine dining experience and most (95%+) of the people who came in did take out so do be prepared for that. But boy oh boy were we glad that we stayed! Hannibal's is a local joint serving traditional low country Southern fare. Originally we came for the shrimp and grits but that was served only during breakfast. We ended up getting a variety of dishes including fried gizzards, crab and shrimp rice, fried whitling and that day's special stewed gizzards. It took a while to come and we had to ask for some things repeatedly. But one bite into the dish and you can tell everything was made fresh to order and the dishes were delicious! As the night went on we started to get more comfortable with the staff and as a result the staff really started to open up more to the point that we were not worried about who or where we were anymore. We really started to see Southern hospitality first hand and understood more and more that soul food is from heart. The gentleman there said that in the South they believe that when you open up your heart others do the same. These are good people. I have no doubt that the next time we come back to Charleston, Hannibal's will be the first place we hit... especially to try their shrimp and grits in the morning! read more

Heard about the Gullah Geechee food from "Taste the Nation" Show with Padma Lakshmi and the culture that lies within the Charleston, SC area. Looked up where to get some food and found Hannibal's which is near downtown and has a very local vibe to it. The Shrimp and Crab Rice was beyond amazing. Definitely order with the onions and peppers, and grab a sweet tea while you're at it. They were out of cornbread at 4ish, so get there early if you want that. That taste is so unique, I wish I could get it in California. Highly recommend. read more

The customer service was horrendous, and on top of all of that they added a tip to my bill after providing me with the total I will be disputing this charge with my bank. This is the spot! I was nervous to go because of the negative reviews of customer service and mediocrity of the food despite the exceptionally reasonable price. I'm here to say MY experience debunked all doubts of this quaint hidden gem. I placed my order online and a little while before my food was expected to be done I got a courtesy call about my arrival to ensure it would be pipping hot. I ordered the rib meal with two sides of Mac and yams, when I tell you the meat was so tender it feel off the bone and it was seasoned very well. I will say if you prefer more of a Smokey savory flavor of ribs this may not be your favorite as it has a hint of sweetness from the sauce but it's was sooo good! The macaroni wasn't bad but it wasn't all I expected it to be, I would just say try for yourself. I also got the entree sides which consisted of an order of 5 pc drumettes, gizzards and smothered pork chops (I wanted a little of everything, don't worry I shared tho lol) The wings and pork chops were both seasoned well and fried good but still juicy and I would order again. The gizzards were less flavorful but then again I'm not an avid gizzard eater so I'm not sure exactly how they're supposed to be but they were hard and I didn't finish them. Finally I got a slice of strawberry cake which I didn't eat because I was stuffed and still had left overs. The only reason this place got 4 stars instead of 5 is because they forgot my order of shrimps which I assume would've been good too. But I'll def be back because those ribs were something special and hopefully I'll get to try the shrimp. read more
