I've had so many cakes and desserts from Hans & Harry's Bakery over the years, but this was actually my first time visiting the bakery myself. My sister usually picks up our orders for parties and events. My biggest issue with Hans & Harry's has always been the inconsistency. I'll try something that is absolutely delicious, order it again, and the next time it's just not as good or doesn't taste as fresh. Then I'll move on to something else, love it, and eventually have the same experience. I still keep coming back because they have such a huge selection and, when something is good, it can be really good. Unfortunately, the inconsistency in taste, freshness, and quality can be disappointing. The cherry turnover has been my one reliable favorite that has never disappointed me. Today I ordered a custard pastry shaped like a turnover and a walnut cinnamon braid. Unfortunately, neither tasted particularly fresh, and both were very doughy. The custard filling itself was delicious, but the pastry was much more like a sweet bread than the light, flaky pastry I was expecting. When I asked the employee about it, he didn't really explain that it was more of a sweet bread; he simply agreed that it was fluffy. Had I been craving a sweet bread, I might have enjoyed it more. The walnut cinnamon braid was even more disappointing. One bite was enough for me to decide it wasn't worth the calories! I wanted that first bite to be full of cinnamon, butter, and walnuts--the kind of bite that makes you immediately want another. Instead, it was bland and doughy. Unfortunately, I've experienced the same inconsistency with their cakes and fruit strudel, which I order regularly for parties. Sometimes they are absolutely to die for, and other times they're just not that great. There's obviously a reason I continue coming back: Hans & Harry's has an incredible variety, and I know how good their desserts can be. Omg! The pastries at this place are unmatched! My girlfriend brought these over to my house and I'm so glad she did because they look pretty far and wouldn't have stumbled upon this place on my own. She bought us what looks like to fruit tart pastries as well as some cake pops. My husband and I actually didn't get to eating the fruit tarts until a few days later so they were just sitting in our fridge. Considering me at these a few days later, we desired it in seconds! I love this bakery! The only downside is that it's far from where I live and kind of out of the way to drive all the way out to Bonita but yes, I WILL go out of my way just to get a fresh fruit strudel, cake or dessert! This is my go to for fruit strudels for potlucks or parties, or birthday cakes. I recently got a vanilla birthday cake with Bavarian cream and fruit topping and it was so moist and delicious! Everyone enjoyed it! For cakes or special occasions, the tip is to order online to avoid the crowds. You can easily order the day before and pick up at their dedicated window that's located on the left hand side of their bakery without having to wait in line. Keep in mind that they're closed on Sundays which is unfortunate for holidays and Sunday parties. I ordered a fruit strudel the night before for Easter and it simply wasn't the same as ordering it fresh the day of. The strudel got soggy and wasn't as good had it been freshly baked, so I don't recommend ordering a strudel unless you eat it the same day. In addition to their strudel and cakes, I also like their danishes, cinnamons rolls and gingerbread men cookies, and cheesecakes! Yum! read more

I know their entire menu including their seasonal pastries and cakes, The famous strudel is great to take to parties with big families, it's completely gone by the end of the party. I really enjoy all the pastries that have the custard filling and my husband's favorite cake is their cheesecake, we get it every year for his birthday. There is plenty of parking but come early if you are looking for something specific. We came later but weee still able to find many tasty items to choose from. They are reasonably priced. When you get in the door, take a ticket and wait for your number to be called if you want something from behind the counter. You can also order ahead. We got three pastries. An almond croissant and a chocolate chip muffin (buy one get one 1/2 off, a deal they may offer later in the day) and a fruit pastry with cream and strawberries. The gentleman who helped us was new but friendly and helpful. Once we grabbed our ticket we looked to see what we wanted and were ready when our number was called. We were in and out in 10 minutes as they have an efficient system and plenty of staff. All three items were amazing. We will be back! read more

Wow 10/10. I can't believe I slept on this place because this is right dab smack in the town I grew up in. Nestled near Starbucks and other local gems, I am awed by how this particular part of town has managed to preserve the quaintness of its local charm. It feels like a little Julian town but you're still just around the corner from a handful of urban development project neighborhoods. But don't be fooled by its proximity to the hood because this particular area houses some very high end ranch properties but those are out of view and inaccessible to me and probably you too lol. Also, it's near a golf course, so go figure--it ain't the hood we grew up in down paradise valley road in Skyline! ANYWAY, this bakery is divine. The aroma hits you right as you enter and it's hard to stay focused when you have a long row of pastries to ogle. There's so much to choose from! You have the whole gamut of fresh pastries, frozen cakes, loaves, and I even saw a little section devoted to Cafe Moto so touché to that. The process is straightforward too--walk in, take a number, then figure out what you want or wait for your number to get called in order to be served. A lot of people seemed confused and they were bunching up in a disoriented line near the entrance. The idea is you're supposed to meander through the store and wait for your turn while leaving space for people to come in and out. Fortunately it wasn't exceptionally busy for a random July Wednesday midmorning, but I have drove past lines forming out the door where people were waiting to even get to the ticket dispenser. Recently ordered the upside down pineapple cake to go. This was something I hadn't had since moms baking days in the 80s. Well this version had a different twist . Delicious in its own right! A layer of light crunchiness almost in the way of crembrulee . Whole pineapples not chunks on once flipped upright for eating. The cake so soft and perfect in way cake should taste. I warn you it is very sweet, but I like it like that. It was a birthday celebration and the co-worker who was watching her diet, went back for seconds. All of us did. Inside they use a ticket system that keeps it organized when it gets busy. The workers are well informed of their stock and the place is very clean. Their baked goods are affordable and great quality. They have lots of different types of pastries for all types of enjoyers. Their muffins moist and flavorful, their fruit pastries fresh and bright, puff pastry flakey and crisp, and presentation all around on point.
