My friends and I were roaming around Lakeview neighborhood and passing by Happy Camper. That's when our pizza cravings kicked in and we just decided to walk in. We ordered a tavern style pesto pizza and a classic margherita pizza. Their tavern style is 14" extra thin crust and square cuts. Even though, I couldn't taste pesto much, the overall flavors were pretty bang on. Margherita pizza was better than pesto one. The ambiance is quite lively, fun and filled with ceiling hanging lights. It's very similar to Paradise Park in Wicker Park. Oh my gosh, what an amazing experience. We went to Happy Camper as a recommendation from a local friend, and it just so happened to be Bingo Night with Ryan. My friend and I that are both from out of town had such an amazing time. We laughed so hard and kept talking about how much fun we were having. It was ordinary bingo (bingo cards, dabbers passed out for you to use, etc.). The prizes were random and hilarious (fish slippers, ramen noodle blanket, shots for your table). Ryan the host had such a fun personality, and it really made the night a great time. The food was great - we had the giant pretzel, the gauvar pizza, and a cookie skillet at the end. The food was decent. Ambiance was nice. Service was not great. It was a 21st birthday for twins. We didn't feel welcomed. At 1st I just assumed it was because it was busy, although we were sat right away with reservations. Our waiter seemed bothered. Basically he never checked on us. We had to wait to "see" him to request another drink, for salt for margaritas, and even wait to ask for bill to pay. Extremely disappointed because we were referred by someone as a great place. It just didn't sit right with me, especially because we, grandparents, really wanted to make this night special. Absolutely nothing made it special. The other cocktails were pretty sweet as well so if you're into that, not a bad choice. We also tried the bar food which was so/so. Known for their pizza but not super impressed. We asked the server if large would be enough or if we needed party size. She said large was only 6 slices, so we got party Size. We weren't aware the slices were the size of Rhode Island :) The kids also got the elote dip. It was really good! Pizza came out. It was super hot and very good. I don't know if a regular espresso martini costs 26 averaging a 10 oz cocktail but that's a bit extreme. Service and food is good but diminished by the adherence to their happy hour. I'm so grateful to the lovely staff that let me and my beautiful service pup hide away here during a huge rain storm. Fortunately it was happy hour too so instead of a pizza I indulged in a Charcuterie board that was loaded with cheeses, meats, olives, peppers, grapes bread crackers and pretzels. I wasn't expecting that much food and for the price it was an incredibly tasty value. I even have leftovers in the fridge! I will definitely be coming back to try a pizza next time. As the storm got much worse my server made sure he closed the two larger windows closest to our booths. This is a great indoor/outdoor experience and luckily the roof and side windows close easily during increment weather. The happy camper is definitely more about the vibe than the food. It is a fun and popping place to go in Wrigleyville. They seemed to have a decent number of tables so you do not need a reservation. Service was quick and efficient, and very fun. If you go for some sort of event or celebration, make sure to tell them, because they will get you some free drinks, and you can't argue with a free drink. The pizzas were loaded up on toppings and were priced reasonably. They were a little heavy, so it might work better to share with someone if you're a lighter eater. We all ordered pizzas, which were all named with clever names. Lastly, the bathrooms were downstairs and down a hallway so you might have to look around a little bit before you find them. I've been coming to Happy Camper for six years because they have one of my favorite speciality pizzas in Chicago! Six years ago, a friend ordered us the Steve pizza -- a Buffalo chicken masterpiece. Since then, every now and again, I order it for takeout from Happy Camper. The crust is airy, crispy and the toppings are plenty and fresh. I fully intended on ordering pizza for my first Happy Camper visit...until I saw the double cheeseburger on the menu. As a self-proclaimed burger snob, I couldn't pass it up. And that decision paid off - this was a delicious burger. The two beef patties were cooked perfectly and were dripping in a layer of melty American cheese. The thousand island dressing spread added for a tangy note to each bite. The soft bun excelled at holding everything together. The side of hand-cut fries were fairly basic but of course paired well with the burger. The side of thousand island made for a delicious dipping sauce. They get extra points for having a hard cider (Virtue) on draft. I loved the vibe of this place and can tell that it's the place to be before/after a Cubs game. The service was great.
