Ordered the combo of preserved vegetables and dried BBQ duck fried rice with a hot HK milk tea for $21.95. Unfortunately, this was quite a disappointing dine-in experience. The fried rice was rather bland and had a slightly overcooked, burnt aftertaste. The preserved vegetables were especially underwhelming, as they lacked the strong, savoury flavour that preserved vegetables usually have. It almost tasted like they had been soaked in water for too long, causing most of the flavour to disappear. The diced BBQ duck was also quite dry and lacked seasoning or duck flavour. The HK milk tea unfortunately matched the theme of the meal -- it was very bland as well, with little tea aroma or creamy milk flavour. We actually had to add salt from the table to make the food more enjoyable. Overall, the meal did not meet expectations, especially considering the price. We got their lobster combo with 2 dishes. The daily soup that it comes with was super flavorful. Sweet and sour pork was fantastic - just enough sauce to coat the meat and batter was still crispy. The fried fish with creamed corn sauce was very basic. Not much taste to it. The cream sauce was excellent but the lobster meat was kinda mushy. Not fresh. Both of the Happy Day Cafe are HK style cafe. I like the breakfast and lunch better in Vancouver but dinner at Richmond. Even the twins are not 100 % the same. I've come here several times with my family and friends. They have plenty of seating and the staff are pretty attentive. It's usually pretty lively throughout the day. They have different menus for lunch and late night compared to regular dinner/breakfast. More importantly the food is delicious and large portions which are great for sharing. We came around 9pm on a Wednesday and noticed that people kept piling in. They have a late night menu which is the same as the lunch menu that we were excited to try after a workout class. The first thing I noticed was how spacious, clean and nice the restaurant was, which I didn't expect for the area. We ordered the baked rice Portuguese style with beef (18.95) which was delicious. I came here with two 90+ years old seniors on a weekday late afternoon. There was no parking on Kingsway, but I was able to find parking on the side street and it wasn't too far for the seniors to walk. The tricky part is a rather short but steep slope to enter the front door, it wasn't easy for the seniors to maneuver. We arrived just before 5 p.m. but were only given the dinner menu. Afternoon tea time should go till 5:30 p.m., but we weren't told we could have asked for the cheaper menu.  We ordered Chicken & Vegetable on Rice and Fried Vermicelli with BBQ Duck Meat & Cilantro. The dishes looked big when they arrived, but I was disappointed after taking a closer look, The portions were big but they were all rice and vermicelli, so the value for money was really terrible. There were not enough chicken and vegetables to finish the rice. The same is true for the vermicelli, the duck meat was shredded and so in reality we were not getting much meat. There was also not enough cilantro to make the dish fragrant.  However, I would still give a higher rating if the food were good. The taste of the food was decent, it did not taste too salty or greasy. However, half way through the meal, I felt funny in my stomach and the discomfort continued the rest of the night. I had heartburn and reflux the rest of the evening, this has not happened to me before and I think it is directly related to the food (or more precisely, something being added to the food like MSG). read more

I've been to the location in Richmond, and the food is consistent. And for a place that has a lot of traffic, it's clean, and that includes the bathrooms. I frequently order curry beef brisket to go, recently they have reduced portions significantly and are trying to hide that fact. The curry and riced used to arrive in separate containers but now arrives in one container together to hide the fact that they serve less rice and less curry. I have left specific instructions for rice and curry to be in separate containers like they used to, but they purposely ignore it as they dont want people to know they bave reduced portions significantly. Decent HK-style cafe in the Collingwood area. Parking is available in the lot behind the building. The inside is quite modern. Looks like they're totally renovated the space from the old Bino's. Memory lane. Staff were friendly and quick. The dishes here are definitely physically larger than normal, and the prices reflect it as well. For smaller eaters, one dish can feed 2 people. My friend and I had the chicken curry on rice, and baked pork chop and seafood on rice. Fairly decent quality. Tasted pretty much the same as Goldstone or Honolulu. No complaints. HK Style Minced Beef & Egg on Rice $11.95 2.5 stars This is a very typical dish that originates in this style of restaurants, its fast and easy with no frills, usually, the egg comes raw on top of the beef and rice, but I personally prefer cooked eggs, so I asked the kitchen to please fry the egg for me sunny side up. Flavour is a bit on the light side, it could use a bit more seasoning, but non-the-less, still pass! Baked Pork Chop & Seafood on Rice $12.95 3 stars This is a combination of two different sauces, its great when you can't decide which one you want, you get both this way! A midsized HK style cafe on a busy street, Happy Day Cafe is kinda just there. The food is pretty passable and it's fine. It's just not any better than fine for me at best. Most recently came by for breakfast and it was fine. Had the noodle soup and traditional breakfast plate combo. For my noodle soup, I had the vermicelli noodles with satay beef. The beef itself was good and tasty. That said, the noodles were bland and the broth as well was also pretty bland. For my other plate, I had two sunny side up eggs, ham, and half a piece of French toast. I want to be able to say more but they honestly were just fine overall. Tasted like eggs, tasted like ham, and the syrup on my French toast tasted like syrup. It wasn't terrible but I wasn't dying to have more. I think it's an acceptable place to drop by and have a quick meal if devoid of other options. I just probably wouldn't plan to come by here intentionally. read more

Happy Day Cafe 喜相逢餐廳 is located on Kingsway and Joyce Street. It is the same location which is used to be Bino's restaurant. It is a typical HK cafe, and it has variety choose on the menu which is included congee , noodle, rice and sandwich 粥粉麵飯+三文治. It is not easy to find a good HK cafe in Vancouver. This one the portion was descent, and the food was lack of flavour. We ordered a Specialty Crispy Top Bun (Pineapple Bun with Chicken Fillet 菠蘿包加雞). It came with a complimentary hot drink, so we picked the classic milk tea. The bun was not crispy, and it was very bland. The milk tea was ok. We also ordered a Pan Fried Beef Brisket and Tendon with Fried Rice Noodle. It was not salty enough, and it had flavourless sauce on the noodle. Very disappointed . The location used to be the old Bino's on Kingsway. Another Hong Kong style cafe. the portions are big and price is average. Had the Singapore style fried vermicelli. The portion was bigger than other places and was good. It had quite a bit of shrimp so that was good, it wasn't just noodles. The service is decent even at 9pm at night. Happy Day Café located on Kingsway & Joyce St. It's their second location to Collingwood area. I don't go HK style café (cha chann teng) that often. I remembered Richmond one food quality and taste quite below average that's why I didn't go back for ages. Let's give it a try and see any improvement after years. Singapore style fried vermicelli - it's totally let me down. It didn't have any curry flavor and watery sauce on the plate. Stir fried sliced beef with rice noodles in black beans sauce - it's so disappointed too. The beef marinated for awhile and too soft, the black bean sauce like soup poured on the rice noodles. Yuck. Also their system was down after I paid with debit and they asked to see my bank account statement to see if the transaction went through. I knew at this point we should just have left but I wanted to leave with no hassle and though it was pretty low risk so I showed the one statement transaction in my bank app (covering info) but it was even moreannoying that the waitress went to take a picture of it without even asking me if its okay and showed someone in the back. Then she showed me she deleted it but at this point you're already inconveniencing the customer who is doing something out of niceness, please yank your manager out to come out personally.
