Our group was big enough that we ordered two sets, one with lobster and one with crab. The dishes were excellent for the price. Service was really good. It's official. I'm now completing a review for the original outpost of Van Tea. Another HK style Asian/Western fusion/traditional style restaurant. The Richmond location is the newer one. It's pretty standard. i know what to expect and it deivers. The seniors like it here. Figuratively, literaly, and physically. It doesn't stray far from the norm for them, and for me. Clean, seating for maybe 30-40, and can get busy during weekend lunch and dinner hours. Parking in the tiny strip mall and side streets. No more parking on E 41st. My rating is heavily based on the item I ordered, which was the wonton noodle soup. While the portion was filling, the wontons were a bit dried out and the soup tasted very starchy. They have lobster, crab and free range chicken dishes. Hot and cold drinks are available. A typical HK cafe in the corner of an assuming strip mall at the corner of Main and 41st. The chicken steak combo was nicely made-crispy skin, thin and nicely cooked. The hash brown and over and easy eggs were not burned. The only issue was the ketchup on the table was really watery (probably from the refilling)-just remember to shake it before using. Wanting a quick meal for lunch, we came by Van Tea since it was nearby and the food and service both could have been better. I ordered the DIY noodle with beef tendon, fresh fish slices and bean curd. The soup base had no fish flavour at all and there was a huge portion of oil noodles but the amount of toppings was minimal. It came with a little bit of napa cabbage as well. My friend who got the Chicken Cutlet and Chicken Wings with Fries noted that everything deep fried was quite greasy. Another dining companion got their fried noodles and its as also very oily with not too many toppings. Overall, the food really was not that good and the prices are not cheap either. I didn't know what to expect the menu would be like, is it going to be like a HK cafe or Cafe Gloucester with the stir fry dishes with a tad of British Influence like their "specials" or more like Happy Day that is like a smaller seafood restaurant with combos as some people don't like ordering family style. Decor was clean and spacious (Covid) Food, I'm going to own it... The first week I went 3 times. Sweet and Sour Pork was delicious with their house soup, others got set dinner mix and match and they mentioned it was flavoured very nicely. This is one of the high quality Hong Kong cafes in Lower Mainland especially that it is a good restaurant in this neighbourhood. Customer service was great. The ambience was comfortable even though the exterior looked a bit crappy. Pricing is reasonable. The most important thing is that the quality of food in general is very well done. The best was the iced hk milk tea. They lost one point because the chicken that we ordered got lots of bones. The restaurant was a bit stingy on giving out more "meat". They could have used or given out some chicken breast and drumstick for the dish. After dinner, we were reading some of the reviews on Yelp. Someone also wrote that a dish of chicken that he ordered got lots of chicken bones as well. There is a very small parking lot behind the restaurant. There is also street parking. I don't know how long this place has been around, but it is refreshingly nice inside, and the food is good! HK style cafes are awesome. I love them. Unfortunately, not all of them are done right. Even if they are, it seems they have a hard time keeping up the standards and quality over time. Many older spots that started out good, deteriorate over time. no. just...no. Their interior decor is newer and modern. Thats why they get 2 stars instead of 1. Parking - the little strip mall lot is full, and so is the street parking. Most of nearby street parking is signed for residents only, so good luck. Service was fine, as you'd expect with a HK cafe. I had coffee/tea mix, my usual drink order at these places. tasted watered down, and too sweet. Food: spicy noodle soup, one of those "chose your own" type bowls in the combo menu. Tasted a bit spicy, water, msg, and not much else. Noodles were a terrible texture too. Dont bother with their noodle soups. The worst offender was their claypot rice. That was such a joke. It deserves 0/5. They mention in the menu, 25mins cook time, and the waitress warns me of that too. no problem, thats expected. I choose the chicken and mushroom one. Pretty typical so far. 25 mins later, the dish comes out. Its in a decorative thin clay bowl that had been warmed. not a clay pot. a clay THIN BOWL. their soy sauce was flavourless. The chicken was heavily underseasoned, tasted extremely bland. the "mushroom" part of "chicken and mushroom" included less than 1 whole shitake mushroom. A mushroom was cut into quarters and i got 3 of those pieces. Plus a couple sprigs of choy sum. And the final nail in the coffin? The CLAY BOWL never got NEARLY hot enough, and did not STAY hot at all. by the time the bowl had cooled down, there was not a SINGLE grain of rice with ANY ounce of crispiness to it. Zero. it was a bowl of plain white warm rice. this was just plain offensive. im NEVER coming back here. If you cant even put clay pot rice in a clay pot, thats just pathetic. I'm a sucker for Hong Kong style cafes, so whenever I get to try a new one I'm always pretty excited. Came on a late night after some exercise. They had a happy hour menu available, which is a pleasant surprise as not every HK style cafe offers one anymore. Basically a smaller size of their main dishes served with your choice of a hot drink, at a discounted price. The restaurant was still fairly busy, with two large groups of patrons and a sprinkling of couples and singles throughout. I ordered a Baked Ox-Tongue Rice (it's good, trust me!) with a hot almond milk drink. (Aside: I tend to order the Baked Ox-Tongue Rice a lot at HK style cafes. Why? Because it's a staple in HK cuisine, and it can quickly give me a pretty good idea of the quality of food at the establishment) The food took a little longer to come than usual, but it is to be expected for a baked rice dish. First impressions of the dish are great - very clean appearance (even the ceramic dishware was fairly clean, which was impressive as they usually are pitted with burn/char marks throughout), not overloaded with cheese, and a healthy portion size. First bites however left more to be desired. I immediately noticed that the rice was just plain white rice, rather than the typical egg fried rice - which is a total game changer when it comes to flavor. The dish was also heavy with undercooked onions, and the ox tongue pieces were small and barely distinguishable from the rest of the dish. The tomato sauce itself was fine, but the rest of the constituents made this meal quite underwhelming. Overall, I found myself disappointed with the food considering how photogenic it was. The almond milk tasted OK. However, there are some other strong redeeming qualities for this restaurant. The first thing that struck me about the restaurant was that it is...unusually clean. The dining area is well lit, the menus aren't wrinkled and falling apart, the tables are relatively unmarked and the upholstery shows little to no signs of wear. Almost every other HK style cafe that I've visited has issues with at least one of the above, so it was very pleasant to find one that didn't have any of them whatsoever. Service here is also fairly good. The servers I found to be friendly and polite, responsive to requests and just overall pleasant. This is again another departure from my typical cafe experience - which makes me wonder if the level of service is inversely proportional to the tastiness of the food. One may never know. Pricing here is also slightly higher than average, but still relatively reasonable. There is ample parking from a small lot in the back as well as plenty of street parking. Overall, I wouldn't resist coming back here. Not my first choice for a HK cafe, but if you're looking for a good clean location to introduce someone to HK cuisine for the first time, it's not a bad place. read more

The menu selection pretty small but standard, they have noodles combo, stir fried rice and noodles, curry and entree dishes. We ordered few dishes to try and food very mediocre. Beef brisket curry with rice - Beef brisket just ok but the rice pretty good. Half of Hainan chicken - It's not authentic Hainan chicken, tasted like Chinese steamed chicken. Stir fried beef with flat rice noodles - sliced beef under-cooked and flat rice noodles like soak in oil. My family came here for dinner and it was alright. The food was not bad. It's average and edible. Prices aren't that cheap though for east Van. It's a pretty busy little restaurant. It is located where the penny lane pub used to be. They renovated it and it's much brighter and cleaner. The decor is cute and feels clean, and the service is not bad. You can order noodles, rice dishes and dishes to go with rice. If you order dishes to go with rice, you automatically get the daily soup. I would go back if I want Chinese food and don't want to drive far. There's parking in the area which is a plus. read more

Food: 4/5 Brownie points for not cutting corners Among the wealth of HK cafés in Vancouver Van Tea Café separates itself by covering the basics. A bright, relatively clean washroom? Check! Nice napkins and utensils? Check! Floor that doesn't have mould between the tiles? Check! Easy parking? Yup! They even have a back room for larger groups and reservations AND microwaveable, recyclable plastic take out containers. The straight forward approach of this HK café is wildly refreshing. They do not subscribe to the large portions//low prices method of Angels, nor do they have some sort of western twist à la Copa and Gloucester, just good quality Chinese food in a well lit, not overly cramped restaurant. Another solid cantonese food place. The chicken cutlet was juicy and tender, and the curry beef brisket was aromatic with a slight hint of spice. The beef could be slightly more tender and fattier and the potatoes a little softer but it was still pretty good and this problem is solved when you reheat the leftovers. It's nice to have a good HK cafe option in the Mount Pleasant area. The decor is modern and the service is friendly. They even asked a few times if we were enjoying the food, which usually doesn't happen because the servers are too busy. I like the fact that there's free parking in the small lot outside too. Typical cantonese diner comfort foods like congee, noodles, pasta and rice. We ordered beef with fried rice noodles which had excellent "wok hay". We ordered a variety of dishes including a curry chicken over rice, beef and lamb satay, and fried chicken wings with fries. All in all, Van.Tea Cafe is an honest HK style cafe with tasty options ranging from baked rice dishes to soup noodles to Cantonese dinner dishes; definitely worth a try if you're in the area. Great hk cafe in the Oakridge area. Very clean atmosphere and good food aswell! We went here for dinner on a Thursday night and it was quite empty. Main dishes came with a complementary daily soup which was nice but overly salty. I would recommend the chicken with ginger and green onion. It's nicely seasoned and the meat is so tender. So we ordered a curry rice and laksa noodle. I added an avocado smoothie with my noodles. The curry was full of flavour and worked well with the duck. Pretty of rice to finish the sauce.
