We arrived late to the area hotel and needed a place for dinner. We chose this place because of the proximity, within walking distance, and we're pleased with the menu offering and the great service. This was our 3rd visit to this particular happy diner location and it may be the last. First, the place is in a mini mall and easy to locate near the corner of Westmont and Gaffey. Parking is adequate but not plentiful. The place is unattractive with bare walls. The chalkboard with specials had some charm though. It is small with ugly tables and when I went it was loud and filled with all sorts of people from gangster types to families w small ones. The outdoor tables in the shade are highly recommended to avoid the din. The staff seemed to be working hard to get everyone's food out but I was only marginally impressed with the food we received. I ordered food to go and as usual food was left out. That is my pet peeve as when I pay for food I expect to get it. We ordered fruit waffles and it came with dried not fresh blueberries- and in total 1/2 of one strawberry and two slices of banana. What a joke that dish was. It was a dried old waffle with that fruit tossed on top. It was the weirdest thing I ever saw. The omelet we received was actually very nice and the salsa amazing-hence the 3 stars. But my fruit was missing so ya I am pissed. I would not recommend this place as a date place, or a place to meet a friend or take mom to brunch but for extremely casual people & families & takeout it may work. One of the worst places I have visited due to sanitation. I'm a culinary student which i already have a serv safe management, which I will explain the horrible things I noticed. I walked in to Happy Diner to buy a meal for my little one. They have this deal for $5 dollars for a kids meals which is delivered to their prek behind the restaurant. Numerous of times I have ordered for my little one without me walking to the restaurant. Today 6/12/19 I order a burger and fries due that i took him out of school early which was the first time I walked in into the place. By me just sitting there, I was able to see the kitchen, which is visible to anyone that walks in. Floors are dirty, but that's nothing compare to cashiers/waitresses/prepcook handle money and credit cards then go make a fruit salad or put stuff on the flat top without washing their hands. All of them sharing a plate of fries, putting stuff in their mouths and not even washing their hands. Touching their faces, fixing their pants without washing their hands and then platting food. And one of the worst of all, cross contamination, I dont know if they have a serv safe handling card but management sucks and needs to train their staff. One of the prep cooks would touch raw products like meat and chicken without washing hands or using gloves and then he prepped a salad (ready to eat food). Over 6 tables were cleaned with the same rag, silverware was not changed or touched with the same rag tables were cleaned. No sanitation buckets were seen. And the cashiers/prep cooks have not hair nets or hats. This food goes to anyone that walks in but worst they go to little children. For sanitation they need training, and if I was an inspector that place would be shout down. The only positive thing I noticed was good costumer service and the way they would treat their regulars. read more

A busy diner on a Sunday morning. The counter seating area was open with six stools available. It was not offered as an option. The front counter lady started a wait list with our party of two. I should have asked for seating at the bar though figured that they were not using it due to Covid. There were also three open tables for two each down the hallway. One party of two that arrived after us were seated at the counter and another party of two were seated in the hallway. Another person then told us that the wait for a table in the main area would be some time and offered the hallway. After being seated down a hallway with no view, along with a dirty table and incomplete silverware, we then chose to seat ourselves at the counter. After all of this waiting we then waited another fifteen minutes at the counter to order. One of us ordered coffee which arrived in a mug with dirty coffee stains on the outside and chipped porcelain at the base. When the food arrived the order for my wife was incorrect. Sausage was on the plate versus the bacon on the order ticket. Hunger and the length of the wait justified not asking for it to be corrected. It took some effort to obtain a refill for the coffee. When queuing up to pay the bill, another customer came to the side and paid their bill while I was still waiting. The customer in front of me was offered a copy of the bill. Upon paying the bill and signing the receipt, such an offer was not made and I was left holding onto the bill with neither of the employees in front standing nearby. They both walked away. I finally obtained the attention of another employee to ask for a copy of the receipt. The food was fine. The service was poor. The communication was worse. The organization was poor. The true test of any business is how well they handle the busy periods while upholding their standards. Unfortunately, this business failed to provide a standard that was enjoyable. read more

I think we finally found our favorite breakfast place in the San Pedro area. We ordered breakfast burritos which came with eggs, cheese, sausage, bacon, potatoes, and onion. Came with a side of excellent Pico de Gallo. Tortilla was nice and crispy. We have driven by here many times on the way to Home Depot, and it's always crowded. Now I know why. I haven't eaten there but my kids have. I have read some good reviews about this place. Unfortunately, my son got sick with vomiting and fever the last two times he ordered his food from Happy Diner in San Pedro few months ago, so my wife and I decided not to order food for him anymore. Recently, we had the big mistake ordering for our little girl, hoping she didn't get sick, but we were wrong again and she has the same symptoms my son had. It seems that this doesn't affect adults but only kids, not sure if it affects all the kids but at least our kids. Just please be cautious, I'm not sure what is it that makes them sick, the mayonnaise, maybe old oil, I don't know. Now I have to stay home with her and lose a day of work. read more

We meet my sister in law for breakfast on Father's day. They were extremely busy so our wait was a little more than desirable. We round up sitting at the counter which was difficult to visit, I couldn't hear anything she was trying to say. My view was one of the cooks and a stack of foam carry out containers that were sitting next to me at the counter along with the bowl of bananas. They could see more people if they removed everything off the counters. As far as the food goes I had the shrimp omelette with hollandaise sauce, cottage cheese in sourdough toast. The shrimp was good size and the sause really made a great tasting omelette. Cottage cheese was very fresh and cold unlike most restaurants where it seems to be on the warm side and a little bit Tangy from age. The reason they only get 3 stars from me today was the fact my sister in law were served a good 10 minutes before my husband and all he ordered was eggs and sausage patties.
