Rex's Cafe has been a staple of San Pedro for a number of years. It has remained one of those unique, truly San Pedro places to eat. I really hate to throw any shade on an independently own businesses. But, for your first-timers out there or you people thinking about going to the establishment, I think there's probably a couple of things that you should think about before you come to this café. First of all, let me speak about the high points. The staff here are all super nice. They do their job jobs very well, and they're very friendly. In terms of their food, it seems very well prepared, and it's always really tasty. They have a very nice cross-section of Americana, Cali/Mex, and other items that really make the selection of what you decide to eat truly an adventure. Plus, they have a really nice selection of drinks, including all of the expected: soft drinks, coffees, lattes, and all of that kind of stuff. They also have a few fairly unique drinks. All good! In terms of atmosphere, they have two main interior dining spaces. Both are very well presented, and the tables are nicely spaced apart so you never feel too close to the other customers in the restaurant, even when it's crowded. They also have a couple of outdoor tables, if that's your preference. If you want to sit out and enjoy the atmosphere. Again, all good! There's a few things that are a little bit funky about this restaurant, however, which always send me to wondering. The first is, they do not have their Health Department Grade displayed on their front window as is required. Generally, I've always found the only time restaurants don't show their grade is when they've received a lower than A marking. So, I don't know what Health Department Grading this restaurant has as it is not displayed. Simple as that. It makes me wonder. The other thing is, if you go to the restroom, you walk past their kitchen and their food preparations areas. You can't help but see the space. I don't know? It just seems a little bit funky back there. Then, when you go into the restroom, if I can be kind, it really needs a renovation. There's caulking and filler used all along the lower walls. Why? That's only known by the people who run this establishment. But, it's just a little bit funky back there. They have these upper shelves, covered with small draperies. Plus, there's an area where they keep their supplies, that it's just not a nice thing to look at when you're eating in a café. My feeling is this stuff should all be separated from the dining establishment so the customers don't have to look at it when they use the restroom. It's just not a good look. Overall, all this being said, this is an unique café, that offers some interesting dishes. I'm just telling you the facts. Make of it what you will. read more

I have passed by this restaurant on many an occasion. I decided to eat here for breakfast, to try out something new. It's larger inside than it appears from the street. There are two separate dining areas, separated by a wall. When I walked inside, I was told I could sit anywhere I liked. There are even a couple small tables for two outside on the patio. It's cozy. Yellow walls. I ordered a latte to begin with and a breakfast sandwich with a side of fruit. I had a cute little sun drawn with chocolate in my latte. The latte was large and hot for a long time. The breakfast wrap is a green herbal tortilla. Healthy tasting and very filling. They asked if I wanted any salsa or ketchup. I should have opted for the salsa. The fruit consisted of bananas, strawberries, pineapple, cantaloupe, and honey dew melon. Fresh. Staff: The staff are both friendly and efficient. They have a sign at the counter that states that they can refuse service at any time. Restroom: Only one in the back. A little funky. Parking: Plenty of free, street parking. read more

All were delicious!! For our food, I opted for steel cut oatmeal and the others got French toast, pancakes with fresh berries, and Huevos Rexeros. Food was thoroughly enjoyed by all. We were in the San Pedro area and it has been awhile since we had been to Rex's. Fond memories drew us back today for brunch take out. We reviewed the menu and ultimately chose a couple of car friendly options. We settled on the Breakfast Burrito and the Tuna Melt. The breakfast burrito was yummy and easy to handle. It was stuffed with generous amounts of bacon, hash browns, scrambled eggs, cheese, and accompanied by a side of refried beans. The salsa added a mild punch to every bite. So satisfying! The tuna melt was also tasty with a tangy tuna salad with melty cheddar cheese all nestled between two toasted slices of bread. This really hit the spot. We enjoyed our quick stop at Rex's Cafe and hope to stop by in the future when we can linger on site! Great choice though for a meal on the run today. Yay! read more

One of my favorite breakfast spots. I love the team here especially Lupe she is so nice! I always try to arrive early when no one is around yet and enjoy a coffee/latte. So quiet and peaceful, My favorite coffee in all of San Pedro. Occasionally i come here with bae, and enjoy breakfast. Service is fast and friendly and the shop is set up so cute and cozy. Really good food and great waitstaff - would go here again! My mom and I got the tofu scramble & tofu/vegetable teriyaki stir fry. They were the exact same dish, haha, just one had teriyaki sauce (and I added avocado to the scramble). Veggies included broccoli, carrots, cauliflower & zucchini (I asked for no mushrooms). The scramble wasn't really a scramble, just cubed tofu with veggies and some garlic/oil/seasoning, but it was still good, especially topped with their salsa and Cholula. I ordered an eggs Benedict because that's my go to and wow-i can't believe they call it that. Really weird for them to charge $15 for what I had. They didn't charge for the coffee but it still came out to $17 cause of a dollar card fee and tax. The waitress was slow and kinda rude when i brought up the coffee. She said usually people don't say that it's mild-so i looked at other reviews and sure enough, others had that experience as well. There is a small outdoor patio, but there were a few of bums & shady characters walking nearby. There is one gender neutral restroom in the back that is kept clean. THE GRUB + Cinnamon café latte $5.95... definitely on the sweeter side, but it comes in a huge mug & was served hot with an eye-pleasing foam/cinnamon design. + Huevos Rexeros (cool name, right?) $13.95... this Mexican inspired dish is a ton of food. Only thing I would change about this is replace the refried beans for Mexican rice. It comes with: "Two corn tortillas topped with eggs, black bean chili, fresh green salsa, tomatoes, sour cream, cheese and avocado. Includes refried beans."
