I've tried this place a couple of times and yet to find a dish that is amazing. However they are better than a few Chinese places around here. The food is a bit less oily and tastes fresh which is a plus. Which explains the higher priced food items then other places. However there is nothing that stands out for me except maybe their Honey Walnut Prawns. When we got there to order, we were NOT acknowledged for a good 10 minutes so we sat there about ready to bolt when my BF went to the cash register and waved the to go menu around. Finally the server who was taking orders and who had been glancing at us a few times made a surprised " OH, you want to order?" . Well DUH, no we want to admire the decor (insert sarcasm). Also they left a paid to go at the register. A lady walked in and tapped her feet waiting and finally said out loud, "is this mine?" Then proceeded to open the bag and box and stick her face in it and then grabbed it and left. Ironic part is that after we paid and the lady handed our order, she made sure it was ours before we could take it and made a whole spiel about how a customer before took a huge order of food that was not theirs and that's why she had to verify. I'm so excited to have found this little gem! We move to Rio Vista from the Martinez area. On that side of the bridge there's lots of good places to eat. But on this side of the bridge not so much. We decided to give this place a try and we are not sorry at all! The food is delicious, the atmosphere was pleasant, the tables were gorgeous, the service was prompt and friendly, and the lady who I can only think would be the owner, made it a point to come to our table and talk to us. Eating somewhere for the first time and having good food and being made to feel like a valued customer is really awesome. I recommend this place to anybody read more

This place is surprisingly good!! The service is absolutely great, and whether you eat in or take your food to go, the quality of the food is equally high. When take-out, they actually break off the corners of the styrofoam containers to avoid condensation build-up, therefore adding water to your food... a nice touch. At the restaurant, everything is super clean, atmosphere is nice, and the drinks are refilled constantly. Having eaten anywhere from home-cooked chinese to most places in Chinatown, SF, I have to say Happy Garden is really good: the portions are optimal and the price is fair. I've come back multiple times and if I'm in the area and am in the mood for chinese, definitely pick this restaurant over any other one. We tried this place 6 years ago when we first moved out to Cordelia and it was not good at all. Out of sheer desperation to try something different we gave them another shot. If you live out in Cordelia/Green Valley you know the struggle is real when it comes to decent food without driving into town or to Vacaville. Well, let me tell you, I don't know what was going on 6 years ago but this place is fantastic now! We had Honey Walnut Prawns that were exceptional. The prawns were cooked perfectly and were not fishy at all (a good sign they were fresh). General Chicken, really good. Egg Foo Yung, super good. Fried rice and Chow Mein, perfect. We ordered 5 entrees total and the bill came to $67. It was easily enough for dinner for two and lunch for both of us the next day. We usually go to Green Bamboo, which has always been good to us by the way. But Happy Garden totally redeemed themselves with the quality of their food tonight. We've occasionally ate here since it opened. The servers have always been attentive to refill water and the wait is never too long for the food to arrive at your table. The menu consists of typical Chinese food fare and compared to the prices at the other nearby Chinese fusion restaurant, the prices here are very reasonable for Green Valley. The food is not bad; we always get the honey walnut prawns and Szechuan string beans. These are our "staples" in this place that never disappoint. Now about the ambience/atmosphere...I can't quite put my finger on it since the decor is far from shabby and drab, but there's just something missing. There's nothing that generates any excitement to it, in fact the place seems a bit tired and maybe that affects how I feel about the food...ok but nothing to get excited about. Perhaps the place can use a more modern feel to it and more light to brighten it up. Until then, 3.5 stars - nothing much exciting but decent Chinese food at fairly reasonable prices. read more

My family goes to Happy Garden simply because it is literally the only Chinese place close to our house. They have all the basics that any other Chinese restaurant would have, but I am sad to say that I can't remember anything being particularly good. Service is always hit or miss...sometimes you get your food in a few minutes, sometimes in 20. For the price you pay, I think the food is worth it, especially if you order off their lunch specials menu. read more

We went for pick-up and spent $52 for 4 items, pot stickers and white rice. The portions were not very large for the price spent and I would definitely call this place pricey for what you get. The food was average. The chicken broccoli was really good, the lemon chicken was extremely dry, and the chow mein very mushy. Would not recommend this place unless you're in the area and it's all you can find when you're craving Chinese food. My guess is that's why they sell overpriced average Chinese food in the Green Valley area, because nothing else is nearby and they can get away with it from people who don't want to drive around for better prices and better food. read more

Our experience at Happy Garden was anything but happy. They should call it "Unhappy Garden" The food was not bad, but the customer service was terrible. Our waiter never made eye contact, had a terrible demeanor. I thought if he smiled just once, his face would crack. We have gone there before, only because the food is pretty good. It's too bad all the employees walk around like they just got back from a funeral. The place has potential, but the customers feel like they are treated like second class citizens.....weird. On the positive side of service, there is one nice Waiter we call, "Mr. Happy". He's the only one who has a personality. The rest are the equivalent of being served by a fence post. I love the sauteed green beans with prawns! So tasty. The shrimps are many and sizeable in my mouth. My husband ordered the Mongolian beef and we added combo chow mein. Was just right for two and took leftovers home with us. We were served fried bananas and sugar donuts for dessert. Yummy! Owner, Fred makes us feel welcomed into his home. White napkins, porcelain plates, good tea and cultural environment. Staff always gives us first-class treatment. Gave 4 stars only because I didnt have more dishes to add to our dinner. Just passing through, visiting relatives, and we wanted to get take out for dinner... I miss good ol Cantonese food-- and this hit the spot! I was surprised that being in Fairfield, that Happy Garden actually has chow fun on the menu-- so we got that, garlic eggplant and kung pao, beef broccoli and a new favorite that i've never had-- Cherry Pork. The Cherry pork was so yummy! I wish that I could find a place in So. Cal that makes it. Basically like sweet and sour pork, but sweeter and with maraschino cherries. I am not sure why people come here. It might be because there is a limited number of Chinese Restaurants in Fairfield. One thing is certain the food is average and that is on a good day. I came here one night because my in-laws were in town and I did not want to drive too far. When I got there, I wasn't greeted and it took them a while to acknowledge me. But it was a Saturday and they were sort of busy, I told them that I was going to buy take out and they directed me towards a table. I sat down and asked if I could have some tea while I chose what to order. He gave me a weird look. What? Tea is only given to eat in orders? What gives? I ordered and asked what the fresh vegetables were. He told me that all the vegetables were fresh. So, I took his word. Walnut Prawns Mustard Greens Fried Rice Salt and Pepper Pork chops I picked up my food, took it home and shared it with my family. Worst Chinese take out I have ever had. I used to love Happy Garden, but the quality of the food and the service have gone downhill drastically in the past few years, while they have raised their prices considerably. We used to go to Happy Garden about six to seven times a year and now I'll go only to pick up rice or pot stickers to go, and I always pay cash. They have a bad habit of double charging credit cards, and then not doing anything about it unless the customer calls them on it. When you do, they yell at you and say "You Lie!" even when you show them proof. They say it happens after they put in the tip (so first, they charge you $60, then they charge you $72), and the $60 charge will post to your account as a hold, and only will disappear after a few days. The second charge goes through. When I questioned the manager by phone about this the second time it happened, he said to me, "I know who you are! You are a bad tipper!" Really? How much should I tip you for handing me a bag of food over a counter? I thought 10% was a very nice tip! Now, cash only, small orders, no tip. read more

I will keep coming back for this! The only somewhat negative thing is that the rest of the menu/food seems pricey for chinese food(most entrees cost ~$10, and I'm used to it starting at ~$7-8). This is what stops me from trying other entress and I just keep getting the family deal. Besides that, the customer service is great! Continuous water refills & complimentary hot tea. They leave the teakettle with you but sometimes, the server will come by to refill your tea! They are very nice and accommodating! I have some food allergies which they kindly take my requests to not include certain ingredients/food in my order. I'm super picky with Chinese Food and this is one of the only Chinese places I ever crave for. I've never had a dish that I didn't like at this place. The combination fried rice is THE BEST hands down fried rice. The food is never too greasy and tastes authentic. The ingredients always seem fresh and everything is just so tasty. I have to agree with the portion size being a bit small for the price. But it just tastes so good that I'd still rather go here than anywhere else. As for the service, I've never had any problem. They've never been super super friendly but at the same time they've never been plain out rude. Maybe it's just a cultural thing? I'd definitely recommend this place and I'll keep coming back! Either way, this is my favorite Chinese place in the area and I'd choose this over Sticky Rice across the street any day. read more

Let me just say this.. The Orange Chicken is amazing, so tangy and crunchy. Also, I would suggest the combination Chow Mein. Whenever I want soup, I get their wonton soup. I usually call ahead to order and they tell me it'll take about 10-15 minutes. THE FOOD IS ALWAYS HOT. I mean so hot, the steam burns a hole through the Styrofoam box it's in. The people on the phone and at the counter are very pleasant, and make you feel welcomed. As far as pricing, they're about average for a Chinese restaurant. Our first time here and decided to have lunch here today with hubby and wow the food was so good and fresh!! We ordered the crab cheese wontons, steamed rice, BBQ pork chow mein, beef with asparagus and honey walnut prawns. Everything was so good. My husband loved the prawns and I so loved the chow mein and I'm usually not a fan of that stuff but this one was so good and not greasy. Service was quick which I liked. I didn't care for our waiter. He didn't seem like he cared for us not sure why but watching him with other patrons he was nice and polite with us he was just like hmmm. Oh well lucky for him we liked the food and will not let his attitude deter us from coming back to try more dishes. read more

My family and I came here after spending some time near the Fairfield shopping mall. My dad wanted some soup and something light (Chinese food definitely makes my stomach full for a few hours...the food digests quickly for me, generally speaking). Please note that the orders here are family-style! We ordered their Hong Kong style noodles with vegetables, sweet and sour fish, steamed white rice, wonton soup, and some more fish (I don't remember the name). At any Chinese place we go to for the first time, we order their Hong Kong style noodles because that's my siblings' favorite Chinese food. This one tasted pretty good with its nice variety of vegetables (broccoli, mushrooms...) and not-too salty of a sauce, but portions of noodles needed to be a little more for a family. It wasn't enough to go around the whole family (there's five in my family - no, we don't grab a lot off the serving plate for just one person). The sweet and sour fish was my favorite, and probably because the fish chunks were fried! The fish was covered in the sweet and sour sauce (the sauce being a typical Chinese sweet and sour...you can probably taste the same exact sauce at a take-out place), and once we were done eating the fish, the plate still had spoonfuls of extra sauce. The wonton soup was given to us warm. I think it was borderline warm-lukewarm, since I didn't have to blow on it at all. They just need to heat it up a little more! Overall, I would go here again. It's a nice and relaxing place to eat after shopping (even though it's five-ten minutes away from the mall, and closer to Costco). read more

One of my favorite neighborhood eats! This place has a comfort to it that I rarely find with Chinese restaurants. The service with each visit gets better and better. The waiters always greet us with a smile and recognize us - if not by name then at least by our orders. What can I say, we're creatures of habit. For this particular spot, we always go with the Mongolian Beef and the Salt & Pepper Chicken. Nothing extraordinary, but I love the flavor and the fact that it doesn't look like it's been smothered in oil. The S&P Chicken isn't on their regular menu, but I love that they accommodate us every time we ask for it. (They still don't compare to what I've found in San Diego, but it still makes me happy) Their soups are some of my favorites in the area simply because the broth is always filled with great taste and no grease.
