This is the only decent Chinese restaurant in Fairfield. There's a few others but they lack ambiance. I usually have the salt and pepper shrimp (not on the lunch menu) but they will make it for you. Lemon chicken also on point. The rest of menu is typical Chinese fare. You also get egg drop soup to start off meal. Very good. The service is good. They serve wine and beer only. Chinese is my husband's favorite! My husband and I decided to go nearby since our favorite places are in either Martinez or Benicia. There are few Chinese restaurants around - especially in Cordelia. We got the food to go and when we came home realized all the food was very bland. The "fried" food was barely cooked. We called right away and they asked me to come back. When I took it back, the chef wanted to taste the food before he would re-make it! After disagreeing with them, they made the food again...or so we thought. We brought the food home again and everything tasted like salt. And pretty sure it was just the same food. So salty, we could barely eat the food and needed about of gallon of water. Agree with other reviews that the "spicy" food was not spicy. Nothing flavorful. Service - bad. Food - bland or salty (you take your pick) Price - about $10 a plate Will not be going back and will either drive to further away or just go to Safeway and get the frozen version. First timer, have yet to find good Chinese food in Fairfield area. Located in a nice area, Atmosphere was nice, restaurant clean and well kept but can use a little upgrading from what was in my view... HOWEVER portion sizes were fair, taste of food was kinda bland didn't really have that authentic flavor you would normally taste. Customer service needs a lot of work we had too much idol time between waiting on water to be delivered and time waiting to place our orders and we were the only other family beside another family in the entire restaurant. The food did come out fast but the temperature was not hot as if it was just prepared. While eating the waiter never NOT ONCE came to check on us to see how everything was or if we needed anything. My husband needed sweet and sour sauce and had to actually had to wait for someone surface to request some. The ONLY time the waiter was timely is when he brought the check and he made sure to check back regularly for it be paid. I really hate writing this about about Happy Garden, but theyve left me no choice. First time eating lunch there was in 2010. I really enjoyed their Mongolian chicken lunch special with a side salad, rice, and soup. This place is ehh to okay, usually go here when we are too lazy to drive deeper into Downtown Fairfield. Ordered Egg Foo Young and Won Ton Soup a while ago and man oh man was the Egg Foo Young soupy! Usually get this at other places and it's more like a thick gravy consistency, leaving the omelet soggy. Then it was filled with too many square carrots and peas (frozen veggie package maybe?). Nice and quite place to go for a quick bite to eat. It is nestled right In the middle of the plaza. I'm a low key kind of guy, so it is my kind of spot location wise. I go every once in a while for lunch. I have also been a couple of times for dinner. I have never seen this place packed to the brim. The food is good. It's just good. Nothing spectacular. I ordered over the phone and should have known better when I kindly greeted the person "Ken" and he didn't respond. He took my order and I said thank you very much, he JUST HUNG UP THE PHONE without acknowledging my manners... I am very critical when it comes to restaurants,especially when it comes to things like service and food quality. I am leery of trying new restaurants as I like knowing that I will have a good meal, so when I took my family out to try a new Chinese spot I was a little apprehensive of getting another sub par meal. We were seated promptly and our order was taken within just a few minutes. Our appetizers arrived quickly (Crab Meat Wontons/Sizzling Rice Soup) and I could tell that the food was very good quality. Now this is where the first opportunity presented itself, there was probably a 45 minute span between our appetizers and main course, the owner apologized and said that they were just bombarded with phone orders (it was the night of the Chinese new year) which I was fine with and appreciated him letting us know rather than just making us wait for our food. We ordered String Bean Chicken(Not on menu), Broccoli Beef, Combination Chow Fun and steamed rice. I was PLEASANTLY surprised when our dishes arrived. Being a huge fan of Asian food, I would not be exaggerating when I say that this was the BEST, Chinese food I have ever experienced, the meat was good quality, the vegetables where fresh and not frozen, and seasoned to perfection, not bland or over done. Very good friend especially for the price. We found that you get a reasonable amount of food and it is quite favorable especially for a lunch menu. I had the tofu with brown rice and my wife had the prawns with brown rice, both items were from the daily lunch menu think that they gave her a dozen times. That was just for the lunch special. The waiters were both men who had sour puss faces on and said as little as possible. My eating companions were weirded out by it as well. Standard Chinese restaurant with typical lunch specials - soup, salad, entree and rice - but they have a huge variety with prices ranging from $7-9 depending on the dish. I had the General Chicken. The food is well prepared and cooked. The chicken was good but the flavor was lacking a little bit. Nothing to really wow my taste buds. The soup was pretty bomb though, I must say. I am very picky when it comes to Chinese food and Chinese Restaurants. This place is wonderful. There is a good selection, the food is cooked well, and you aren't limited to what I term as "Chinese Junk Food." Quick note for Lunch time: If you are coming in for lunch, and you do not want to order from the lunch menu (individual meals that come with a bowl of soup, salad) you need to state that you want a regular menu before or as you are being seated. If you want to be sure that there is no MSG in your food, just ask that they not put MSG in your food. There are some spicy foods, but you need to specify how spicy you want it to be. If you don't say you want it hot-hot, then it will be rather mild (at least to me, and I like my spicy food really spicy). My tried and true menu items: steamed rice, mustard green soup, garlic chicken, chinese broccoli, and chicken lettuce wraps. I haven't had a problem with service here--ever (this makes exception for the very busy nights and the lunch rush times where everyone seems to be wanting something at the same time and thus no one is happy). read more
