We ordered at the bottom of lunch combo page to get a sampling of appetizers we could share
    Peter M.

This review is only based on one take=out visit and appetizer type offerings at that, but we stopped here just because we had a nearby medical point event, so I thought I would offer a comment or two for what should be our only visit here. It seems like Chinese take-out places all have the same offerings for a lot of their items, but there cn be minor differences that matter to me. I have ruled out a return visit to restaurants whose boneless pork is tough and chewy, for example, Or if their chicken wings are smoked or overdone. At Happy Garden we ordered two lunch combos of singer food, as we were eating in the car. And I can report that the boneless BBQ and the chicken wings were good. The teriyaki chicken seemed a little tougher than it needed to be, but not excessively so. The other items, such as chicken fingers, crab Rangoon, chicken teriyaki, egg roll and fried rice, were all fine. We probably won't be back as there are so many choices out there in the Portland area, but if you like Chinese fast food appetizers at least, I wouldn't discourage you. Oh, we ordered any the counter without calling head, and it was ready in the ten minutes she told us.

Knocked our socks off. Absolutely delicious Chinese takeout, like the kind we used to get in NYC. Affordable and large portions.

Very greasy or very dry. No "Happy" medium. Seems little more pricey then other places and quality isn't comparable. But just my opinion...

At work talking about Chinese food when my co-work tells me they've been hearing some great things…read moreabout Evergreen. Located on Western Ave in a strip mall with Big Fin Poke. It's a tad far from home in North Deering, bit of it's as good as I am hearing, it will be worth the trip. Menu on line was easy to navigate landing me at the "Dinner specials" page. A great variety of, more than some of the other places we've tried and way more than our local Chinese place. I chose the Straw mushroom with snow peas with boneless pork and hubby chose their General Tso chicken with chicken fingers for his appetizer. Both requested the wanton soup which is an upchargw from the other soup offerings. I really like the format for ordering on line with sections for different options like soup, rice, and appetizer. Most places you get the appetizer assigned and charged if you want to change it. Not here, you can choose! Yay! I arrived a few minutes after I was texted my order was ready. Signage was clear and easy to read. Ample parking in the shared parking lot. Upon entering you can see it is a take out centered type restaurant but does offer booth or table seating. It was a busy Saturday night and they had everything operating smoothly. Walked up to counter area and was greeted immediately, gave my phone number and name and my food was presented. Made my payment preference on line which included a tip, made sure to not double tip. Then I was off and running. At home I unpacked the food and was surprised to find the wanton soup was a deep brown color, unusual since most wanton soups are a clear yellow. Large sliced zucchini and carrots accompanied the hand made wanton stars. They had make them with the meat neatly wrapped in dough and remaining dough behind the ball like a shooting star with a tail. WOW! The taste was unique, on the spicy side with a taste of Thai chili sauce swirled in. Very tasty but too hot, my taste buds would have not worked for the rest of my meal. On to the Straw mushroom and snow pea meal with fried rice and boneless pork. Oh My!! So fresh and tasty the peas were numerous as were the mushrooms. Fried rice was excellent as was the boneless pork, it overly cooked and super tender yum! So what are ve heard is true and more. Sadly I could find no delivery options for this establishment so take out it will be.

But I hope my critique will help them improve, at least the last 2 dishes I had. (I won't speak to my husband's meals.) First, the orange chicken, which I had a few weeks ago. It was mostly good. My one criticism (and it's a big one!) is to dial way back on the batter. It should be mostly chicken, with a light, crispy tangy coating. What I had was mostly ALL batter, with little discernible meat inside. Not appealing, and it certainly makes me hesitant to ever order it again. The second bad meal was yesterday. I ordered the chicken with garlic sauce. I was anticipating lovely tender chicken, infused with a delicious fragrant garlic flavor. What I got was tough chicken (that obviously skipped the velveting process) and bland, tasteless sauce. No garlic was present, as far as I could tell. It was the most nondescript Chinese dish I've ever had. And I'm talking eating at Chinatown in Philly and Boston, and all over the U.S. for the last 50 years. Both of these experiences make me feel as though they've given up on trying to do the best they can. And it's also made me decide not to return-at least in the foreseeable future. But I hold out hope that when I decide to give them a third try, it was be as good an experience as I had before these disappointing ones.

Lobster rangoon, order them yesterday. They're absolutely amazing. Little sweet, little tangy, rich, very light exterior, plenty of filling; they checked all the boxes. I wish an order came with double! (I wouldn't judge if you put in a double order). The Duck Bao, for me, would be a pass for next time. They were good- just not standout. The bao bun itself was very nice and pillowy, just as you'd want, so they are working with a great foundation. I just wanted a little more out of the flavor for the duck. Maybe it could have used some freshness in there, there was a touch of scallion and some soy based sauce in there but could have benefited from some veg like shredded carrot or daikon or something else. Either that or it would have needed to lean even harder into the umami, caramel- deep flavors. Onto the orange beef. I didn't know how to feel about this when it was first put in front of me. The portion seemed okay, but I realized as I kept eating, the pile of beef wasn't going down as quick as I thought it would (good problem to have!) the beef was crisp, the orange flavor was tangy and sweet - it was really tasty. Beef wasn't tough but also wasn't super tender. Not good nor bad. My only complaint here is that there could have been a little more bok choy and the rice was not very easy to eat with chopsticks. It was a jasmine rice from what it seemed and it didn't have any starch to stick together at all. To pick it up I was having to press the beef into the rice to stick it all together. Not super easy to eat but maybe its just a me problem.

Beige sauce. Beige peanuts. Zero spice. Too sweet. Bland flavors. Mostly noodles and sprouts. Not much protein. Maybe it was an off night. But . . . blah. They brought some ground chilis, that added a touch of heat but that didn't add much flavor. I kept adding chilis. It didn't fix the underlying lack of flavor. Daughter got the drunken noodles. It definitely looked better than the Pad Thai. She said it was average at best. At least it had some color. We both ordered our dishes spicy and neither one had any spice. Like zero on a scale of 1 to 5. Both entrees were about $14. The salvation of the meal was the curry puff appetizer. They were really good. Savory filling in a flaky pastry crust. Like a Thai-chicken and curry empanada. So so so good. They were $8. Service was ok. There were only a few tables with patrons so that helped. The place is really cute, and they put a pitcher of water on the table along with nice water glasses. I just wish the food was spicy enough to need a lot of water. If I was scoring only for the Pad Thai, I'd give this a minus zero. With the curry puffs and the nice ambiance, I'm giving this a generous three stars. It should really be a two star review. That said, lots of people seem to have positive reviews. Maybe I just hit a bad night or a substitute cook.
