My favorite go-to salad place. I like to build my own. I also like the avocado toast. Super quick if you order online.

This was my first experience with bowl, so it tasted a little foreign but was an overall a good experience. They served things with free options, limited but enough for choice. So I just tried without knowing this mixed cuisine was going anywhere. The mushroom was a bit salty, and the corns were my favorite, sweet but fresh. The rice was well cooked, making me satisfied in taking carbohydrates like this. Overall, the whole bowl was a little salty, I was hoping a bowl with less sodium content. The real great thing was the pink drink, you definitely wanna make it on your top hit list once you tried it. read more

Clientele is a bit of the obnoxious Lululemon crowd, but won't dock any points for catering to a market. The best vegan restaurant in NC! They have like so many options you can mix and match! The quality of food was supreme. They had these special home made juices with a twist! I really like this place. The food is fresh, the people who serve us are always friendly. And I always leave happy hence the name I guess. My favorite dish that I have gotten RELIGIOUSLY is the Bida Bowl. It is hands down my favorite "fast food" dish ever. Today I heard the most frightening news that this dish is a seasonal dish. In case the manager or owner happens to read this post about their store, please, I beg you, please DO NOT REMOVE THE BIDA BOWL from the menu. I wanted to love it but unfortunately I don't see myself going back unless it's for juice/fruit water. I went this past Saturday around noon and I waited for over 20 minutes even though there was only one person ahead of me at the moment I arrived. I thought Happy + Hale would was fast casual food but I was wrong. I ordered the poke bowl but none of the rice, tuna, or sauces were out. After arguing about their work schedule for almost 5 minutes, someone got the tuna and the rice and brought it up front. They thought the rice was old so they threw it in the trash (which I appreciated! Old rice in a sushi bowl would be horrible!) but then a guy in the kitchen argued with the woman making my food over whether or not she should've thrown it out! A few minutes later he finally handed over the newer refrigerated rice. Then the sauces weren't out so that was another thing they had to step away to do. And then my bowl was made and it just sat there for a few minutes during another work-related discussion. I was so antsy to leave and satiate my poke bowl craving. They finally gave my food the the cashier, after about 15 people have come in behind me and left ahead of me. I picked out a lemon and jalapeño fruit water (Hot N' Bothered) and put it next to the bowl. She rings me up and I say thank you and put my juice in my bag. She says, "Oh I didn't realize you got a drink too. I need to ring you up again." At that point, I am floored. Nothing about going to Happy + Hale was a smooth process. It also took such a long time to get my food made because nothing was ready and everyone kept gossiping and arguing about their schedule! The food was not even worth it - the fish was chewy and it was very fishy tasting. This is not right for poke. I would've been willing to give the place another chance (there were other delicious sounding options) but the experience was just too frustrating. On a positive note, it's a convenient location with easy parking. The Hot N' Bothered lemon jalapeño water was delicious, but it's also around $8. Expensive but so delicious. I would go back for only the Hot N' Bothered. read more

This place used to be pretty decent if you're the kind of person that tends to want meat to balance out their other pseudo-fresh ingredients. They had a great chicken curry bowl that was apparently a collaboration with Bida Manda in Raleigh (assuredly why it was good). One might suppose that Bida Manda ended that relationship, because the meat that Happy and Hale passes off as chicken now is essentially institutional grade and probably wouldn't be served at most local prisons. Don't be fooled by their promises of healthy high quality ingredients. This is just a mechanism for lowering cost and increasing margin. Margin mostly supplied by unsuspecting undergrads lured by trendy attachments to a yoga studio and cool employees who wouldn't eat the meat either. read more

I am obsessed with this place. I go to Duke and Happy + Hale is a dangerously close walk from me. I'm a vegan and they have tons of options to create a really satisfying meal. The people working there are also super nice and welcoming. The ambiance inside is also fresh and fun creating a great experience overall. I also love that they have BAKED falafel and the seasonal hummus and other dips are fantastic. I wish I could go every day. read more

Today was my first visit to Happy+Hale on 9th Street in Durham. Being from San Francisco I am a bit of a food snob as places like this are everywhere in the Bay but I was happily surprised. The food was awesome, clean, crisp, fresh, chicken cooked to perfection and very, very tasty. The prices are fair too. The only reason I am giving it three stars is because I walked in on a Sunday around 5:30pm and it was empty. Yay for me!!! I read the wall menu for about five minutes (still the only customer in the store) and never once did either of the two employees even bother to smile or say hi. When I said hi, this is my first time here the one gal said, "Oh." No smile, no interest, didn't ask me if I had any questions and had zero personality at all. I still am setting aside judgement. I asked her if the chicken was white, breast meat and she starting stirring something with a spoon and stared at me. She then picked up some chicken in the spoon and said, "Like that?" I just blew it off and said super! She made my bowl, which was excellent, and then went to check me out. I gave her my card and she handed me a receipt and a pen and walked off. I don't know why but I AGAIN gave her the benefit of the doubt, as they were getting busy, and I tipped her $4 bucks TOO MUCH!!! There sat my bowl, three sodas and me while I watched her attend to another customer and proceed to make a meal never looking my way. After five minutes she walked back to the register and looked at me as if she had never seen me before and said to me, "Can I help you???" Inside I was thinking WTF sweetheart...is that a rhetorical question? I held my breath, because she wouldn't know what rhetorical meant anyway and I said, "I want my receipt and a bag please!" No apologies from her and I left. The employees here clearly need some customer service training. Maybe they should also learn the meaning of their store's name. I had the bida bowl today and it was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! The flavors were amazing with just the right hint of spice.

If you visit Durham you should check out this great salad bar! My daughter took me there as a healthy option and it was great! The salads are hand crafted and they are filling! They indoor and outdoor seating. Healthy beverages are available. read more

I was so excited when I first tried this several months ago. My chopped salad was delicious but pricey. I came back and ordered the same salad and they said they weren't chopping salads anymore because it was loud and wasted water. My salad at that point was not very good unchopped. The last time I came the music was blasting so loud inside I could barely think. Again got the same overpriced salad and not good at all. I won't be coming back. I don't think this place will stay in business long if they don't accommodate wishes of customers especially with the high cost. read more

I recently had lunch there with a colleague, and the food was amazing! It was my first time dining there, and I was highly impressed. I ordered the Ensa-lot-a, which I have had 3 more times since my lunch date (I think I am addicted). It was DELICIOUS! For my drink, I had the Dragonade, which is also very good. The staff were very patient and friendly, and I loved that they have so many vegetarian-friendly options given my dietary restrictions. I would definitely recommend anyone to dine here, and I will most certainly be a returning customer! read more

I don't know how or why I didn't review this place the same day I went. It is amazing! The sauces are definitely my favorite. The curry yogurt sauce is amazing! I went in to happy & hale the other just to purchase some of this sauce. The bowls are big and I had to to take the rest to go but it's definitely worth it. It's healthy and delicious. Great food and very friendly staff! This would be a five-star review, but they are often out of ingredients. They should work to improve their ordering of ingredients via data collection. Also, would be great to have signs stating what ingredients they are out of when I wait in line, so I don't have to make a rushed decision at the front with 15 pairs of eyes staring at me. Also, out of napkins and there were dirty tables/overflowing trash cans. May need to hire one more staff member for rush shifts to help with this. Talk about horrible service. I have enjoyed the food in the past, however today 20 minutes of my time were wasted. I asked for the Beyond bulgogi bowl and was informed by a server that the meatballs were not going to be done for a bit, to which I said was fine and that I'd wait. I was fine with the wait as I've worked in food service for many years and know that things happen. However, after I'd waited the 20 minutes and my bowl had been started, that same server decided to use the last of the sauce that comes on the bowl on another order that had been placed after mine. She rudely told me to pick another sauce, and I expressed surprise and asked why she didn't tell me that she was using the last of it on someone else's, she simply shrugged and left me to leave the store, very disappointed and hungry. I'm very surprised that someone would prioritize other customers who would order later than one before them and will not be returning. read more

I initially really liked this place, however more recently I have been a less and less satisfied customer. The menu was changed and with that the service sizes became smaller: all of the sudden the paper serving bowls are smaller size, same high price though. The kids working behind the counter don't know the menu and frequently make mistakes, forget ingredients. When reminded that something was left out of the salad, I was given an evil stare. I really, really, reaaaaaaally want to be able to give this place 5 stars. I am probably this business's ideal target customer (I am a salad/juice junkie, a vegan, and totally buying the whole vibe/vision of this place) and was SUPER DUPER excited to try H+H out the minute I learned they were moving here. Unfortunately, both experiences I've had so far have been decidedly "meh". If it was cheap and/or abundant and "meh", I'd be willing to give it three stars, but since it's spendy, and portions are...delicate, AND the quality has been unexpectedly dodgy, I have to go with just 2 for now (OK, maybe 2.5....). Since they're still super new, I'm willing to give them a chance to work stuff out, but I reallyreally hope the quality and consistency improves! Here's why: THE GOOD: - service is excellent. Friendly, helpful, relatively fast. Zero complaints. - the bottled juices I sampled were delicious - good (but surprisingly not great) options for difficult vegan/gf folks like me - the smoothie I had on my first visit was over-the-moon delicious (green no envy with added protein) THE BAD: - the dressings I've tried have been shockingly flavorless, despite their seemingly flavorful ingredients. I don't know what's up with that. Delicious salad dressing is a MUST. I have a hunch that the dressings use too much oil and not enough "stuff" for my tastes, but I'm not certain if that's the case - both times I've been, elements of my salad have been poorly prepared and undercooked (the "roasted" beets I got on my first visit were rock hard and raw on the inside; ditto for the butternut squash) - the second visit I ordered the same smoothie is tried previously (because it was DELICIOUS the first time), and it arrived hugely chunky, and tasted almost nothing like the first time I had it. Boo. - the portions are REALLY surprisingly small, especially for the price. The bowls I've had have been BARELY full, and are small to begin with. In addition, they're not overly generous with the add-ins/toppings. Basically, you end up with a small-moderate portion of greens with about a tbsp of each ingredient. Disappointing for $10. Long story short, I am very hopeful that given a little time for growing pains I'll be able to elevate this score to a 5-star...but when you're serving fresh and simple food at high-ish prices, it has GOT to be excellent. "Meh" just won't cut it. read more
