It's so funny how our society dictates, and in most cases, we allow it to tell us what is masculine and what is feminine, what guys do and what gals do and never the twain shall meet! I'm enjoying watching my students at Elon cross lines in how they dress, how they identify themselves as far as gender and sexuality and how they express themselves on and off stage. I'm trying in my own way to follow that trend and be a little less concerned about what I look like or what I say and just be me. I recently wore a beautiful hand woven wool coat made for me by an appreciative woman in Marrakesh, Morocco that had been sitting in my closet for over 20 years. It's design and cut are not what men normally wear around here and so I have been self-conscious about wearing it. My students' openness encouraged me to wear it to class one day and one of the football jocks immediately said, "Hey Professor, you look cool in that jacket!" He said the perfect thing!! And so with that spirit, at the spur of the moment after getting my hair cut by Cristian right up the street, I popped into Happy Nails. I would not say the outside is particularly appealing, and if I remember correctly I could not quite really see inside which was a turn off, but Cristian said his wife went there and she liked it so I went inside. Once you got in, it was very cute and clean and friendly. I think it is Asian owned and staffed, and it reminded me of an incredible foot massage I got in Thailand, but that's a story for another day! LOL Anyway, I decided to treat myself to a manicure and pedicure. My hesitation with these services have always been my discomfort when they cut my cuticles. I find it painful and it deters me from wanting to get a manicure of pedicure again. This time I decided to be a bit more assertive and explained to the lovely young woman performing the services that I was very sensitive at my cuticles on both my hands and feet, She did a magnificent job of giving me a great manicure and pedicure without any discomfort and with a lot of pleasure. I enjoyed every minute of it and I will be back! I don't know the percentages, but I would dare say there are few men in the United States who would allow themselves to enjoy a manicure or pedicure. I know, because for years I felt it was not masculine and wouldn't get one and now I don't give a rat's a--. It felt good to be pampered, it felt good to have somebody attend to my hands and feet. And to be honest attending to my feet are getting harder and harder the older I get LOL So all in all, I had a great time and I encourage all of my guy friends to break out of their box and enjoy something as nice as this. I thought their prices were quite fair for what you were getting and it was all done very well! I will be back Happy Nails. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. I only came in because I broke my nail and needed to fix it. Because they didn't have the same gel color to reprint the nail I had to change all the colors. As we continued through the normal gel color take off. The lady in the first chair on the right begins putting the top coat of gel on. I asked her what are we going to do with my broken nail. She tells me that she was just going to paint it. I have long almond shaped nails. I told her why would you paint it when all my nails look different. Then her and the other nail tech started yelling at me that I should've told them sooner that I wanted acrylic on my broke nail. I said why would you even allow anyone out your salon with different nails. That's bad business for you. Then they started speaking in Vietnamese and having an attitude so I just told them to just forget it. I am now uncomfortable and I don't feel good being in here. Then I asked how much for the gel polish removal. She said $10. I told her that's how much you charge people for gel color removal. Then she tells me it's $5. These woman are unprofessional and are just trying to rip me off. Never coming back. Left there and went to Elegant Nails right up the street to fix my nails. read more

Today was my 2nd visit to Happy Nails. Obviously, my first experience was very good and they did a great job on my pedi & SNS manicure. I appreciated the fact that they could accommodate me and my friend just before closing time. Today, I was pressed for time yet I really needed SNS on my nails and I wanted a pedi as well. 1) They took me in right at opening this morning. 2) Per my request, I had two very nice young ladies one for my pedi and the other helping with getting my nails ready for fresh SNS application and she also did the new application. SNS on my fingernails works really well for me, without it my nails will split right at the line of nail bed/quick. SNS allows me to enjoy long nails pain free. The most important thing is to find someone who can do a good job and make them look natural. My nails are natural, as in no tips applied but they just need a bit of help to not split and break. (I can't make any comments about tip application and SNS at Happy Nails.) What I can say is that these ladies are very talented, nice and accommodating as is possible. I look forward to when I return and I don't have to rush them because of my schedule and I can upgrade my pedi/manicure to a spa level relaxing experience. Five Stars/A++ read more

I went in for a pedicure and Diane REFUSED to cut my toenails down and only filed them, saying they were short enough. I had to go back and have it done 3 days later and they CHARGED me $10 to do what I asked for 3 days prior and paid for! Then, as Mila is cutting them down, she said it would be $10 and I stated that I had already paid for a full pedicure (which only lasted 20 minutes!) and that I had asked Diane to cut them down. Diane chimes in with a nasty tone saying that she did shorten them by filing them and that they were short enough. I said, "Isn't that my choice whether they are short enough or not?" She got RUDE. I go to Diane and I don't know what kind of magic she uses but a basic manicure lasts at least 5 days before chipping... sometimes a full week... that's just regular nail polish not gel... and that's with me washing baby bottles every day. Probably one of the worst pedis I've ever had.. Came in for a pedicure only because I am away from my normal spot. I was not asked what type of pedicure I wanted, and a quickly realized the tech was in too big of a hurry to care (and seem totally disinterested and lazy). I get pedicures mainly for the foot massage, and when I asked if she was done after a 90 second massage (total), she said "yes, you were not paying attention". Sit down to finish was 26 minutes, and that included me waiting a few min at the start. I told the tech I would have gladly paid for the upgraded pedicure, and she said "next time". I even offered to pay more this trip and that was not an option. They were not busy - no one waiting. Won't ever be back. read more

Great little nail place on Lawndale Dr. That offers manicures, gel manicures and pedicures. The lady who did my gel manicure was efficient and thorough. She made sure that everything looked good and dare I say...well manicured?! Lots of color options for manicures and gel manicures, I think I will be back to try out their pedicures when it gets warmer! read more

Terrible experience. A young girl did my nails for SNS and did horribly. Wrong color and the nails were uneven and lumpy. Needless to say, the nail techs redid it ON TOP of the previous poor work and it still did not look the best. I had plans and stayed there for 2 hours!!! Been pedicure shopping since moving to town a few months ago, this is the best place I've found so far. Not crowded the couple of times I've been, so good service and they don't rush the massage. I previously had a good experience there and went back. This time didn't turn out so well. I requested a gel set with french tips. The girl had a lot of problems getting some of the nails to glue properly. Because of this, 2 days later I started to notice that things were getting between my regular nails and the overlay...which was acrylic instead of the gel I requested (she didn't understand me and was too busy talking to others to pay attention to my requests). Now, 5 days later I'm having serious issues with things getting trapped in the nails as well as near the nail bed looks really bad bc she didn't bother to push back and cut my cuticles and instead just used the Dremel. She also glued the tips down really far so they aren't matching in length and my fingers look stubby. Can't wait to get back home so I can have these removed. The only reason they got 2 stars instead of just 1 is bc Joanna did a wonderful job on my pedicure. She was the one I saw the time before for my nails and pedicure and did a great job on both. read more
