First of I wanna say that I went to eat by myself. Once I walked in they told me if I wanted to have a table which I declined bc I was there for hibachi. They put me at a grill that was empty and told me it could be a 30 min wait which was fine with me bc I was alone. A family of 4 came and they asked me to move seats instead of having the family sit a chair down. The food wasn't great. It was very watery which made the food very nasty. The cooks need to let the veggies cook a little better for that won't happen. read more

Unfortunately after going to Happy Sumo for close to 20 years and being our favorite I am sad to say that this place has really declined. The front staff, the woman up front, has no idea what customer service is or how to handle long term loyal customers with dignity and respect. On multiple occasions we've ordered large orders of sushi to go and received not what we have ordered, either rolls missing or incorrect rolls altogether. After calling, we were told that next time they would correct it right. Unfortunately on multiple occasions the front end person has told us that she has no idea what we are talking about, implying that we are lying and treating us in an extremely rude manner. Not only we don't get what we pay for or missing rolls, later she makes it ok to question us in a very rude manner instead of making it it right as promised. We've decided to find another spot, as this kind of customer service is unacceptable. I suggest to the owner to hire a new front end staff, she is hurting your business!!!! read more

Where to begin. First off we came during lunch and they were not busy. She forgot my straw, my husband kindly asked for a straw upon her return and she gets and unwrapped straw with her hand and places it in my drink. Second we get to the hibachi. There was no show. He looks at what everyone orders and simply dishes it out. Food was nothing to write home about (also they charge you an extra 2 bucks for the fried rice! please be aware. We were finishing our meals and my husband places his card to pay. The server comes to him and loudly says tip not included. Um well, we were tipping in cash. I'm sorry my tip is private and usually left on the table and how do you know you deserved a tip for your lackluster service! I had the steak & chicken combination dinner. The steak was tender, but the chicken had too much sauce on it. The soup that came with the meal looked like hot water or very diluted broth with two slices of mushrooms in it. Needless to say, I skipped the soup. Dessert was a small scoop of rainbow sherbet or vanilla ice cream. My husband thought it was like eating at Sarku at the mall food court but three times the price. Parking: located in a large shopping center with plentiful, open parking lot. Ambiance: outdated asian decor with multiple private hibachi rooms and a separate sushi bar room. Food: ordered sushi from here which came out in about 10 minutes on a Saturday evening. Tasted good, nothing to boast about. We sat at the sushi bar, so we were able to chat it up with the sushi maker. He later hooked us up with a free sushi roll, which tasted better than what we had ordered. The salad that came with my friend's meal was tiny with a small amount of the ginger dressing. Overall: average sushi, good for large groups not ideal for a date due to very outdated decor. I literally WISH I could give one star. Me and my honey arrived a little before 8:00pm to dine in for hibachi. As soon as we walked in we were not greeted promptly with a waiter standing behind the counter shuffling through previous tickets. It took him literally 2 minutes to look up and acknowledge us. Shortly after a nice young lady came from the back with to go orders and told us it would be 5 minutes for her to get us a table. 7 minutes roll by and a another couple comes in they greet them Immediately and within 30 seconds a waiter takes them to a table to seated. Here I am majorly confused because they have skipped all over us and if it had not been for the guy who ignored us while coming in saying something we STILL would have been sitting there!!! The other waiter proceeds to take them ahead anyway while we follow! By this time I am pissed but holding my composure I'm thinking maybe they will take our order first to accommodate the mess up. NOPE!! They then take the other couple order and then slid over to us. I politely put my purse back on my shoulder and hit the door. Don't ever judge a book by its cover I tip very well and I will NOT COME BACK TO THIS MESS OF AN ESTABLISHMENT they call a restaurant. read more

I will start on a positive note...the waitress that took our order was pleasant and very nice, but the hibachi here was horrible. I tried this place last week after moving away from the area 10 plus years ago. I spent $70 plus dollars on 2 hibachi filet and shrimp dinners/fried rice and water, that were lack luster at best. The hibachi grill area was full so my guest and I were seated at a normal table, which was fine and the dinners were prepared elsewhere and brought to our table. The steak and shrimp came out and were not remotely hot and had been drizzled to death by what I assume was teriyaki sauce.....which was gross and not the typical hibachi experience for me. The vegetables were huge and not bite size and the fried rice seemed like white rice spray painted brown.....No flavor whatsoever. The entire plate of food was plated sloppy and had what I assume was teriyaki sauce drizzled all over it, in a very unappetizing, sloppy fashion. I will never eat here again. I'm still bewildered at how a hibachi restaurant can screw up hibachi which consist of such simple ingredients to season and prepare. I regret not taking a photo of my dinner to further document the experience. I have been eating Nakato on Cheshire Bridge Road for close to 25 years....if you want a superb hibachi dinner, please do yourself a favor and go to Nakato. Nakato is approx $40 a plate, vs this place being about $25 a plate, but is well worth the extra money. Nakato Rules, but this place DOES NOT!!!! read more

This is in regard to Sophia Y. whom clearly did not read what I reviewed. My statement specifically said "if you do not tip the waitress to her standards, you get chased" NOT "If you do not tip at all". Which I'm sure they still chase you if you do not tip. The only thing that Ms. Sophia Y. mentioned that I agree with is that it is indeed cheap to not tip. For my standards, 1 will NOT receive a tip if the service is poor, however if the service was subpar (hence the experience that I mentioned in my previous review) then you will receive a minimum tip from me instead of the standard. All in all, it's more tacky to chase your customer's down out the door for any kind of tip. That's the bottom line. read more

Happy Sumo? Okay, I am Sumo... and definitely Sumo was not happy when he took a visit on his lunch break. The coke was the best thing about the hibachi lunch. The chef literally said hi, cooked, and dipped out. Then he turned his entertainment on for the next table. Leaves the impression of inconsistency. The vegetables were not cooked thoroughly. A bit disappointing. Would definitely recommend driving to Aomi or Kani House. I may consider going back for the sushi just because that's where the positive yelps are at. I was at the restraunt when it was not busy with my family of six...which included 2 babies! I was charged a sitting fee for both babies and then charged a 18% gratuity on top of that! The food was not good at all and when I asked for a manager..all of a sudden the hostess could not speak english! My boyfriend and I went to Hibachi here and the food was alright but the chef who served us was HORRIBLE! When we were seated, he was finishing up with another group and was loudly making fun of special needs children and how he almost had to ride "the short bus". When it was our turn he started the conversation with a Trump/Hillary joke and from there didn't stop talking about politics which made me really uncomfortable. He wouldn't stop discussing really personal topics like religion and kept making everyone feel really awkward. One of the servers came in at some point and when she left he called her uglier than his wife. Even after our dinner was served, he stayed for another 15 minutes and pushed his opinions on us. I've been coming to Happy Sumo for many years now and the sushi has always been great. I've never eaten at the hibachi tables, so I can't comment on that aspect, but the sushi bar is great for sure. The sushi chefs really know what they're doing and they serve very fresh and tasty sushi. The udon bowls and tempura are also delicious. The service is great as well. Their $10.99 lunch special includes soup (same miso found at every sushi place), salad (not a fan of their dressing), and I chose the California roll and shrimp tempura. The tempura was fantastic! The roll was not. Their rice layer was of the cheaper, mushy variety that seems squeezed out of a tube. It was still tasty, but not phenomenal. My boyfriend and I always get the hibachi lunch to go which comes with a large portion of rice, chicken, the most delectable sautéed veggies (my favorite part,) and a salad with the best ginger dressing I have ever had. This is your traditional Americanized Hibachi restaurant. They also happen to offer sushi, but the hibachi is what draws people here. The Norcross location is in a old run down strip mall in Norcross. Unlike their sister restaurant in Perimeter, this location has several individual hibachi rooms that are nice for privacy, especially if your group is large enough for occupy the entire table. The restaurant seems old and tired, but the food is good. The fillet was tender and tasty and the shrimp cooked perfectly (i.e. not rubbery). Our cook had a great sense of humor and was entertaining. I was surprised that they did not have milk for kids I'd recommend this restaurant for decent casual hibachi dining. My brother and I went here for lunch, we had hibachi and my brother ordered some sushi which he was generous enough to share.My brother just ordered salmon fresh and smoked and California rolls which were just okay because the rice was warm which isn't really what you are expecting for sushi. I ordered the seafood special lunch and the shrimp, scallops and the salmon were all very good although the salmon was little crispy from being cooked a bit too long. My brother got the filet and we both had fried rice. He was very happy with his steak and we traded bites and it was good. The fried rice was a little bland and could have used some more seasoning but all in all it was a nice lunch. I would come back here but I don't know if I would order any more of their sushi. read more
