Whenever I'm working on a house project and I need either a quick tool or supplies to "get me through" this is the first place I come versus hitting up the major brands. Lots of inexpensive deals but it all depends on the project you're trying to tackle. Ideal for tools you rarely need or when it comes to organization. Hanging out at Harbor Freight Tools makes me giggle like a little schoolgirl... in the manliest way possible, of course. And I do love this store because it feels like a "manly place to be" (in the immortal words of the punk rock song by the Diesel Queens titled "O.S.H."). Since there are no Orchard Supply Hardware stores outside of California and Oregon, I have to get my fill of macho D.I.Y. ambience at this fine establishment. It's a stripped-down, bare-knuckles kind of a hardware store with all sorts of practical durable goods, power tools, and things forged out of steel. I had to restrain my handy friend from buying a giant air compressor who was certain he could justify the need for an entire line of pneumatic tools, when in fact these would just become high-end expensive garage toys. Men can sometimes do more damage than Julia Roberts on Rodeo Drive when unleashed in the right retail environment. My housemates and I did manage to get a great deal on utility trailers here. These come in kits and are the bare-bones steel girders that you assemble yourself. The mid-range model (with a capacity of 1195 lbs) we ended up getting was foldable for storage, which makes for a smaller footprint in our garage. And we also will be adding decking ourselves, but the usefullness of a tow trailer is immeasurable. If you are considering such a heady purchase, rest assured that Harbor Freight has these things on sale periodically (we saved $70!), so check their website for their sales flyer and you can also read customer reviews on individual items. If you get excited about hardware, you will like this store. We shopped the big box stores and prices were too above our budget. We went for coffee and next door was Harbor Freight Tools. The tools we needed were not common, but we decided to visit and see what they had. Not only did Harbor Freight have the tools, but they were UNDER our budget. SCORE! Shelves are pretty empty, which is understandable with current world situation, but I have two issues. It appears the store does not know what they will receive prior to shipment delivery. I've called on a weekly basis looking a specific item and they can't if it on the delivery, because they don't know what they will receive. Very poor distribution system. HF is my favorite store next to 99 Cents Only stores and WalMart. This location is closest to my house. Can you imagine this single SENIOR WOMAN likes HF so much? HF is my Honey Do ! The stuff is so cheap already, sometimes a single use makes the purchase worth it. Several times I got defective merchandise, such as an orbital car polisher, where when you turned it on for the first time, horrible racket and all these plastic shards came flying out. Another time I bought a hand truck/cart. 1 year later I paid a day-laborer to put assemble it and discovered that the L shaped platform and it's screw assembly holes and platform width did not match the holes and width on the poles. It was discontinued by HF and not even in their computer, but they knew they sold it and gave me credit for what I said I paid for it $19.95. Another time I bought a bistro/beach umbrella with wooden spines, which broke the first time I used it, and the wind blew it down. It was beyond the 90 days or I didn't have receipt, but they gave me credit. They do not carry those crappy items anymore. I never "got stuck" with any crappy item, because they refused to make me happy by taking it back, and I think I've been shopping at HF for at least 17 years. Recently I purchased a 50-ft no-kink garden hose from Lowes cos it was on sale, but still was $19.95. I wondered at the time, how much it would be at HF. After buying it, I found HF had a sale on their 50-ft no-kink hose, marked down from $17.99 to $13.99, plus I love it that HF lets me STILL use their 20% off coupon on a sale item, so price would have been $11.19. So I returned the Lowes hose, saving $8.76. HF workers are helpful whatever store I shop at. No bad service or experience ever stuck in my memory, and it is a LONG one! I also get the free items for a no-minimum requirement purchase using 20% off coupon for that too. Then I put the free items in a Christmas gift exchange bag. I think those 25 foot orange tape measures with the super large size numbers, headlamps, and blue multiple LED flashlights (football field shaped) make GREAT GIFTS. Asking for my phone number at the cash register lets the stores know I frequent it, and then they keep me on the mailing list for their sales and special coupons for free items that are better than those found in the junk mail ads. They always have cheap deals. Yes I understand that their tools are lower quality, but they work just fine if you don't intend to use them 24/7. I guess I've been lucky and haven't came across any bad tools yet and I have a few tools (sanders, saws, etc)from here. You can always find coupons for this place, they are in every coupon mailer. They have a good return/exchange policy too (with a receipt) and they always offer a protection plan. Employees were bad-mouthing customers in the back when I walked by. I just try to avoid the store now. The long lines and lack of any help. They did not carry t50 staples. They had an off brand that didn't fit. I had to go to Lowes which had a great selection of staples. What set me off today was my coupon didn't start yet. I didn't realize coupons have a start date. I thought they expire. So my coupon wasn't valid...yet. They are running so many small print deals you can't even read when the coupon starts or ends it's kind of lame. The other day I purchased 2 moving dollys; one wood, one hard plastic. When we tried to use the plastic one it popped its caster throwing little metal balls everywhere. Needless to say it was useless so we weren't able to use it. Later that day I went back to the store to return it. Holy crap! Um, wow. Never saw a store like this before. Kind of part hardware store, part survivalist store, part specialty item store, and part toy store for adults. There's stuff here I've only seen in print and online catalogs before--never in person. From air compressors to auto supplies to home security equipment to workshop supplies to powerful magnets to solar power arrays to etc. to etc. to etc., this place has everything you can't find at the other stores. My wife and I were looking around at several stores for a can crusher. No dice, until I took the advice of someone at Fry's who suggested Harbor Freight. They actually had two to choose from, and the clerk I asked told me which of the two was of better quality. I also found one of those electric bug zappers that looks like a tennis racket. From there, I just wandered through aisle after aisle saying to myself, "OMG, they have THIS here?" I was practically salivating at some of the stuff, and if I had the money I would have walked out with a cart full and more. When Walmart and Home Depot leave you disappointed in your quest to find object X, you will likely find it here, and at rock bottom price. Before you go online and pay the shipping cost for that specialty item, give this place a gander first-- they may just have it. The right tool for the job really helps. As with many jobs however I only do them once in a blue moon. The tools here are cheap enough to make it worth while to buy it. My friends and I have a joke, everything sold here eventually becomes a hammer. It is true just about everything is made in chine and may not last more than a few uses, but often that is enough. If you see a coupon price in a mailer be sure to bring it with you as the in store ads do not have the coupons. Typically I avoid the power tools and stick to the hand tools, jack stands and miscellaneous items. This location is close so I go there for some things occasionally. It's just your basic budget hardware store but it lacks that neighborhood feeling. The employees barely care and they often have conversations with each other rather than engaging with customers. If they didn't have such good deals on things like heat shrink I would probably not shop there. You know you are in a harbor freight when you walk in the door and take a big whiff of the air. They have some okay stuff here and they also have a lot of junk. Depending on what you need you can snag a good deal but I don't get anything but accessories here - socket tray, tool box drawer liner, magnetic trays. Don't shop here! I bought a saw and exchanged it because it was a lemon. But I thought maybe that was just a fluke, so I exchanged it. So then 30 days later the 2nd one broke. So I decided to just get my money back. They refused to give me my money back because "per store policy" the 2nd return gets store credit only. So now I have a $90 store credit for a store I will never do business with because of their shady practices. The supervisor acknowledged the saws were both their defects, but I'm not entitled to my money back. Scammers!!
