Harbor Greens is my jam. This is an excellent grocery store with tons of locally sourced options. The owners are great guys and genuinely care about how this place is run, who they employ, and the satisfaction of their customers. They will often times be the guys helping you out to your car. The wine selection is on point and the produce is always top notch. The only complaint (and pretty irrelevant) I would have with Harbor Greens is the amount of time it takes them to make a sandwich. I get it, don't expect restaurant like service at a grocery store. I'm certainly not complaining about the quality of the sandwich, they are delicious. Harbor Greens is a cute little neighborhood grocery store in Gig Harbor. It is a great alternative to crossing the bridge to go to Trader Joe's or Tacoma Boys. While a bit pricey for certain items, if you shop when things are on sale and don't mind paying more for quality organic fruits and vegetables then this place might just be up your alley!!! They also have a great deli with made to order subs and a variety of delicious fresh salads. Their wine and cheese selection is up to par w/other local gourmet specialty shops. I work just down the street from this place so most of my experience with them is through the deli (aka sandwiches). They make some mean sandwiches though, I can tell you that. They are always really friendly and the ingredients are always very fresh. They sell BBQ beef brisket by the pound and one time I came in for a sandwich and the guy behind the counter suggested I try the brisket as a sandwich so I did and now I'm addicted. Their tamales are also wonderful. Yes the groceries are a bit pricey but think of a few things: 1.) Places like Safeway have their own trucks deliver their food from mega farms all over the country. These farms sell produce for WAY cheaper than a small place could get it for. Safeway also buys everything in bulk (like cereal etc) so they pay way less for each item. 2.) The ingredients used in their "Harbor Greens" brand selections like salsa and pasta sauce are all very fresh and most likely mainly organic and local, therefore they are more expensive. 3.) You are paying for the experience. Yeah maybe you might think it is a little pretentious to think of grocery shopping as an "experience" but some people do enjoy taking their time and chatting with the produce guy and enjoy going to places that are more laid back and slow paced than mega-chains. If you don't like that, don't criticize it for what it is, simply just don't shop there. Like any upscale grocery store, you will find a better selection of organic and local products but also at a more premium price. That's the name of the game. 4.) Also, you are supporting a local family! That doesn't seem to mean anything to most people anymore though, sadly. There's my rant. I just feel like people are too critical sometimes. Harbor Greens isn't trying to compete with the discount grocery stores and they don't claim to be the best bargain in town so don't think of them as being in the same category. Love this store! Hate the parking lot! The actual location of this store in town is good but the parking lot is small with several other business that utilize the same parking spots. I find myself going to QFC across the street just to avoid the parking traffic jam at Harbor Greens. Other than the parking this place is great. read more

Decent beer selection; pretty much the only reason I go there (my wife actually goes for real groceries). Though, keep an eye on the single bottle/can pricing, they sometimes don't ring up as marked in the isle. Overall, a good grocer. I just returned from Harbor Greens after not having shopped there for quite some time. I stopped shopping there because I found some of their employees to be a bit rude and cocky. Even though they magically started acting a bit nicer when Main & Vine got close to opening, I threw my business to M & V for the reasons I mentioned. Earlier today I was driving past and saw a sign advertising a good price for steaks. So I though, I'd give them another try. When I asked for the sale item the kid in the meat section tersely responded that the sale is over. I mentioned that the sign said otherwise. No apology for the misunderstanding, no offer to honor the sale price (as I believe they are obligated)...nothing. He just said they were going to change the sign. I asked for the manager, not because I wanted to make a scene, but I figured he's want his employees to be more polite to customers. His response was just as bad. "It's Wednesday and that sale ended. We're changing the sign". Bear in mind it's 2 pm, not like I was waiting out front for the doors to open. Anyway, I don't need the steaks that badly and I don't need to support these jerks either. read more

For produce and meat, it's tough to beat. Need a great sandwich for lunch? Best ones in the Harbor. Need anything else? Not the place I'd go! New to Gig Harbor and looking for some fresh produce and organic options. Stumbled upon this little gem of a market and found all I wanted and more. The produce was fresh and there was a good selection. Also found many snacks and pantry items that I had been looking for, so all in all a successful trip. Grabbed a sandwich and soup for lunch and it was fresh and yummy. Even walked my bags out to the car after purchase, without asking, and it was a nice gesture - one that never occurred in San Francisco or Seattle. Harbor Greens has fantastic seafood. I pick up the ahi tuna kabobs and use two of them to make fish tacos for four. Produce is fresh and reasonable. The sandwiches in the deli at great (if you don't mind paying the $7-9). Wine selection is great for slightly overpriced WA & CA wines (but they are good wines). Overall, you'll spend significant money for some very good quality food. It's worth it if you want a great meal at home. read more

They offer high-quality produce at low prices. Their deli department offers quality meat fare, and they make kick-ass sandwiches (try The Warrior). I go here only for produce, sandwiches, or meat. I don't shop here all the time, but every now and then they have some great deals on meat and produce and whenever I see something that catches my eye I make a point to swing over there and take advantage. The deli here is great. They make REALLY good sandwiches and absolutely load them up. If you get the gluten free bread, they basically just make you two loaded sandwiches with 4 slices of Udi's bread and it's enough for two people. Great value for the price. I've tried the samosas they make as well as the bbq pork dumplings and will definitely get them again. Yes, they have a lot of items that you can find at a normal grocery store for a little bit less, but they also have a lot of items you will not find elsewhere and I have yet to be disappointed by anything I've purchased here. And yes, as others have said.. the parking lot is crap.. but that's no fault of the store. read more

I have mixed feelings about Harbor Greens. I've been a customer since their opening day. Perhaps it's best to do a pro + cons review, to give a complete impression. Pros: +Super friendly. I don't think I've met more than one or two less-than friendly employees. They do seem to have a core of people, but otherwise seems like the turnover is high. +It's an interesting store. Fun if you're shopping for things to take to a party, or for specialty items. +Easy to drop and get out quickly. +They have a real butcher shop! +Lots of produce Cons: +So much of their produce is from other countries during the season when West Coast produce is readily available. For the price you pay for foreign produce, they could bring American produce in. Can't see why you'd pay $3.50 and up for California cauliflower, when it's selling for 99 cents in Cali. +Prices are going up. The prices for food are going WAY up this year! Seriously. $5.99 for yogurt? $10.00+ for organic milk? +The people who live in the apartments are STILL too clueless to read the parking signs, so you're competing to find a spot by the store. +The deli... well, the sandwiches are good. But, they always get the orders wrong, and their hygiene is not great. Seriously, don't put on plastic gloves then wipe your nose in them. Harbor Greens is a solid choice to do the grocery shopping for your "signature meal" prep before having company. While it's certainly pricey, they have a great selection of high quality foods and some options you probably haven't heard of before. I originally gave this place only 3 stars and now I can't remember why! I LOVE this place. Now I know that most of you are going to argue that they are expensive. For the most part their meat and other items are more expensive than others, but a lot of the stuff is local or closer than Argentina. BUT their produce can't be beat! Best quality and best prices in the harbor. This place is where most of my shopping takes place now. More so since I mainly eat fruits and vegetables anyway! The customer service behind the meat counter is terrible. I've experienced this on numerous occasions shopping here. I've owned and worked in retail so I am aware that an employee can have a bad day, but the frequency of my experience leads me to believe that this is a management or training issue. A few days ago I went in to purchase some salmon. The counter person approached me without saying a single word. I asked for my selection. He grabbed the top piece of salmon that had teriyaki sauce splashed on it from the nearby halibut skewers, sloppily cut a piece with what appeared to be a dull knife, wrapped it and handed it to me without saying one word. I'm done. I'll be taking my significant food budget and discretionary spending to Whole Foods or anywhere else. read more

Just found this market after years of driving past it on my way to our place on Fox Island. If you enjoy excellence this is your market. After my first visit a few weeks ago I've returned multiple times. Outstanding, I mean outstanding sandwiches, (little basil is awesome) great salads (lemon pasta my favorite) amazing fresh take home and bake pizzas. Produce is always great, always, not sometimes, always. Have not yet tried their meets/seafood but absolutely will. Guilty pleasures, wine, beer selection, and they have these pastries/cookie products "Ugly Duck" that my family can't get enough of. While they have some staples, this is not a place to go for many and they don't try to compete in that arena. I'm one that loves when a business decides it will do a few things exceptionally well rather than a lot of things just ok. The icing on the cake is the customer service. The staff/management obviously put a lot of emphasis on ensuring you enjoy your experience. Big fan obviously. New loyal customer. read more

We love this place. The meat ans seafood is better than anywhere in town when we have company over they always rave about the meat and where it comes from. The employees are great always have a smile and are incredibly helpful. The sandwiches are amazing i love the fact that they aren't afraid to be creative it really works. Yes the regular stuff isn't as reasonably priced as Safeway but they have things you cant find at any mega grocery store so it is what it is if you don't like it shop at the boring mega stores. I have shopped at HG since it opened last summer. Obviously, as a returning customer, they are doing something right. One thing they are not trying to do is compete with the mega-store grocery chains or Costco on price. If you are as price-sensitive as Corinna P., you are going to be a lot happier shopping at Fred Meyer or Costco. However, if you are interested in freshness and quality of produce, and in organic products, you ought to give HG a try. I've always found the seasonal selection of fruits and vegetables to be excellent. They also do a pretty good job with meat. I have been disappointed with their fish. Too often the fish has looked a little bit past the pull date. Fresh bread from regional bakeries is always on my grocery list, and although HG usually has bread from Seattle bakeries like Essential and Grand Central, it isn't delivered daily, and I've had to by some bread that hasn't been as fresh as I would have liked. The young staff is universally cheery, courteous, and helpful. As for the $12 pasta sauce, I don't buy that sort of thing anyway, since I can make my own from fresh ingredients for about $4, and it tastes a lot better to my palate. I am a little worried that when the rest of the buildings in the project are completed and in full use, the limited parking will be a problem. So far it isn't. The fruits & vegetables are really fresh, and usually better priced than the chain stores though! I see the trend - it's like a newer Tacoma Boys or something? They have their own chips-salsa and other house branded goods but I wonder if it is really made there or if they all buy this stuff from the same place? Anyway the produce was beautiful and staff friendly. I enjoyed the samples of fist sized strawberries. The deli looked tempting and I look forward to giving it a try. OK I like most men hate being dragged thru a everyday grocery store like QFC, Albertsons, Safeway etc.....but this place is special. I actually like it when my wife does not come along :-). I love this place. Yes some of the items are more expensive than a typical chain grocery store, but you're paying for quality. I personally would rather pay a bit more for organic, grass fed, antibiotic-free beef and fresh eggs from a local farm, but thats just me. Recent discovery. New gourmet grocery store on the otherside of the bridge. Apparantly was opened by a long-time former employee of Tacoma Boys. The hand written signs advertising the various fresh vegetable specials look familiar. The store, however, is decidedly more upscale. It's a real blend of Met Market and Tacoma Boys. I'm very jealous of the people who live next door as the grocery store is part of a multi-use project. read more

I have never been approached or asked a question, or told hello or have a good day. I did tell one female that I hoped that she would have a 'better' day, (meaning that she seemed very unhappy).
