I entered Hard Luck Tattoo as a walk-in client and left very happy. On a Friday evening, I thought the shop would be busy but to my surprise and advantage, there were no customers waiting. I explained to Bear the type of Geometric design I wanted. Very simple and minimalistic in concept, my son's birthday in the form of geometric symbols and dots. As a creative who love visual references, I came with a sketch in hand, in addition to other visual references. The original placement I desired was my right ear lobe (cool concept in theory), however due to the size of my ear, Bear informed me the tattoo wouldn't look good. I loved the honest feedback. Listen I'm open to suggestions when it comes to the creative process. Bear took 10 mins to draft the design and 5 mins to ink me. Love his work! DO NOT GET ANYTHING PIERCED HERE. About 3, almost 4 weeks ago, my boyfriends sister, and my boyfriends mom and I got piercings here. The two of us got our nose pierced, and one for the forward helix. Unfortunately I don't know his name, but I know he was Latino, and had a beard and wore a hat. As a result from this piercing, I got a really gross bump. (And so did my boyfriends sister and mom!) And today it just looked really bad, so I went to a well known jeweler in Hollywood for him to take a look at my nose. He looks at it and inside, and says, "Okay, this piercing was done so fucking horribly wrong." He proceed to explain to me that it was pierced going straight down rather than the angle my nose is at. Also, the jewelry was fucking pathetic, and had no polish to it. Also, I don't remember the name of what the jewelry had or was made of, but it is ILLEGAL to sell in California. I was really devastated that this happened to me. Fortunately, I'm gonna be taken care of at Generation8 tattoo (with @theallendabbs). It sucks that I have to wait 3 weeks for it to heal and re-do this whole process. Also to say, the guy who pierced my nose NEVER explained anything afterwards. He never explained how to clean it, or what to clean it with. I left really confused. As far as tattoos go, I really don't know, but I definitely wouldn't go there ever again. I'm only giving this one star cause I'm kinda required to so that I can write a review. Anyway, DON'T GO HERE. I'm not trying to make this sound like an advertisement but I think it's only fair. If your gonna pierce your face and want it done just go to Generation8 tattoo and piercing. It's where it's at! For both tattoos and piercings! (Or if not, do your research well and make sure they're legit.) If you want something done and RIGHT, just do yourself a favor and research. read more

My review is based on the work itself for a hummingbird Tattoo created by Bear. I went in with the plan to get a black and white hummingbird but after discussing many images with Bear I took his advice and decided on a colored one instead. I don't regret my decision at all. Bear was very gentle and paid VERY close attention to details. I am very happy with my hummingbird tattoo. I had an idea for a piece I wanted for the last nine years. I had gone to several shops and explained what I wanted and could not find anyone who could draw it up exactly to what I had in mind. That is until I walked in to Hard Luck and dealt with Mike. I told him what I wanted he said he would sketch something out and asked me to come back in a day or two. I came back and liked what I saw so I asked him to draw it up. The next day he called me to say it was ready; so after work I went to the shop and got it done. Man, after three hours of getting inked up I had the most beautiful piece on my leg. All of the guys in the shop crowded around to check it out and were congratulating Mike, as apparently this was his best piece to date. I was surprised to learn that he had only been tatting for less than a year at that time, but he certainly is a talented artist. Ugh...the people here act like they could care less if they get your business. I lost my nose piercing a few weeks back, went in to get one and the front desk guy did not bend it correctly and I lost it again the next week. I went back and had the owner do it and it still isn't bent correclty and looks like a silver booger is hanging from my nose, UGH! If I turn it a certain way, it feel like it is piercing my septum and is just extremely uncomfortable. I give up on this place. I was coming here because it was close to me and the guy I had years ago was very good...maybe he is no longer there...I will go to WEHO or Venice next time, but not here ever again... read more

A week later, I was in his shop getting a full sleeve on one arm. Back a week later for a leg sleeve and many more to come. Working on a sketch to cover my entire back right now. I walked in and was not greeted there were two men in the front I had to say hello I'm here to buy a dermo ring for them to help me out. They didn't have a well stocked supply of rings BUT THIS IS A TATTOO SHOP RIGHT?? this is where I got my dermo done. The ring that I bought I didn't like it I spent $10 and tipped the guy and when I walked out it wasn't screwed on all the way I have the appliance myself to fix it no biggie to my discovery he put in a ring that was too big. I took it out and tossed it on the trash and ordered one off eBay it fits perfect and it's a cute pink heart. Lol better luck next time!! read more

I went to get my septum pierced about a year ago after careful consideration on many different places to go. I ended up here, having some type of knowledge about septum piercings. I forget who pierced me, but it was a shorter fella with a mustache and glasses. I was calm through, he was pretty nice. I didnt feel anything, however when i left, i actually looked at the placement and it was definitely through the cartilage, and very low to where it would touch the middle of my lip. i took it out about 5 fives months after because of the placement. and it ended up with an infection. The people there are nice, but I dont know if they have all the experience with certain piercings. read more

This place is trash. DO NOT EVER get piercings here. They have zero lack of knowledge on what they're doing. My friends piercings became severely infected, they told us to use bactine to help our piercings to heal which is the wrong solution to use!!! They pierced my tragus piercing with a regular earring, so now I can only use regular earrings in that hole because tragus earrings do not fit :). The guy did not listen to the placement I wanted for my piercings and it's overall the worse place you can go. Never trust. read more

When I walked in there were two guys sitting in some chairs staring into space like they were high. There was a guy standing upfront by this huge screen on the wall turning up the music. No one said "hey, how can I help you?" Nothing. I finally asked the guy who was turning up the music who I needed to talk to about getting a tattoo. He said he could help. I tried explaining what I wanted but it was hard with the music right next to us. Plus he didn't look interested. He told me to have a seat. He drew up a something generic looking and said that he didn't have the right needle. He said he would pick one up and I could come back in the next day for the tattoo. He handed me his card, "Mike" was the name and told me to shoot him a text with my info. I sent a quick text to identify myself/the tattoo I wanted and like I figured, no response. No sweat, I had pretty much decided early on this place wasn't the place for me. I figure it's more for people who have already had work done there. read more
