It's not too wet and mushy and is complimented nicely with bacon or Portuguese sausage or corned beef hash. This is my almost daily lunch place. Lots of choices, filing and you can choose to sit outdoors underneath an umbrella or inside the cafeteria. They provide 3 hot meals daily - vegetarian option is always available. If you choose the hot meal of the day, you get 2 sides and a drink in the price, which is a great deal. Or a hot sandwich with fries and a drink. A large salad bar, sushi made daily, few options for the sweet tooth as well. And two kinds of hot soup as well. GET IN MY BELLY! I didnt even know of this cafeteria until one day I had a dentist appointment and my boyfriend mentioned that there was a cafe. So I used to work close by, so my coworkers and I would come for breakfast. I came 2x recently, it has changed inside tremendously, ok maybe I'm exaggerating, but it has changed from maybe 10 years since I've been here. I love their breakfast here, get all their meats if you want, it's all a la carte anyway. Get double the bacon if you want! I usually like the fried rice or home fries (potatoes with veggies), they also have plain white and brown rice, but something about that fried rice just cooked perfectly. Not salty, but there is a perfect amount of flavor! I love it. Eggs not overly done, a little undercooked or maybe runny, but honestly, I don't mind it that way. The bacon is always yummy! There are some crispy ones, some undercooked ones, specify which one you want, I love mines crispy! Corned beef hash is yummy and that too if you want the crispy parts, then say so, they can't read your mind. They also had pork links and Portuguese sausage. I do remember them changing it up somedays? But I swear there is always the same starch choices, eggs and bacon, the other meats were sometimes changed up. I have no idea if they are set with their breakfast meats or still change it up, since it's been so long Make sure you tell them you want it to go. If you eat there, they put it on a regular plate and if you don't finish your food, there is foil at the condiment section. There are also plastic bags at the cash register. Condiments (the ones I remember, lol) include tartar, relish, mustard, salt, pepper. Sauce containers to pump your ketchup or Tabasco into, no idea why it's that way as opposed packets. Yes, I am reviewing a hospital cafeteria. But this is not just any hospital cafeteria! It's flippin Harkness! I have eaten here almost every weekday for two years. . .thousands of my dollars have been given to this eatery from lunch breaks and early dinners. Ya know, the food here is not great, but it's good. . .especially since it's catered toward patients so it's low sodium, low fat, perfect for your health. Alllllllssooooooo, every Thursday is pasta day! I moved back from New York for pasta day (almost, but not quite). I would kill for pasta day. Actually. . . . .yes, I would kill someone for pasta day. ANNNNNNNNNNNNNNDDDDD.. . .the specialty chef also cooks for 3660 on the Rise. Seriously, the creator of 3660's ahi katsu? I bow down to you. I work at the hospital and I get a meal discount so the prices may be a bit more expensive for visitors. Food has been very good and pretty consistent. read more

Today 10/19/11 was Thai Tom Yum. So i give a 5 star for that soup. Usualy I don't care for Thai food, but this soup is cooked and done beautifully. It is cooked fresh at the Harkness Dinning room on the QMC between 11am-run out. They serve it only once a month. The soup has fish, scallops, shrimp, and chicken.....to DIE for! Located at queens medical center. This is not your typical cafeteria style dining as they offer a lot of variety. They have a salad bar, they would have specials everyday and made to cook. I do like their made to order burger window where they serve grass fed beef, sandwiches, garlic, sweet potato and regular fries. What I don't like is that they charge for a to go box! read more

You shouldn't expect too much from a hospital cafeteria but it's not all bad. I do enjoy they're salad bar. They're salad bar has your typical cheese, bacon bits, romaine, spinach. It also serves you a pre made salad like chicken ceasar (varies on different days), ahi poke, and many more. The also have specials. Each day they serve a special kind a meal, different from the regular menu. They call it the "Harkness Special." Some examples of their specials are Tom yum soup, clam chowder bread bowl, pasta stir fry, taco bowl, ichiban noodle soup, kalua quesadilla, and many more. The regular menu also differs on different days. My favorite is their chilies chicken which is fried chicken wings and thighs with a special shoyu/chili sauce for dipping. I would always get their meal (two sides and one entree with a fountain drink) because it's cheaper that way if you plan to get a drink. It's about $7.00-$8.00 without the employee discount. They also have a grill which is open everyday. They close during a certain time so it's always good to double check if they're open. There you can order burgers, French fries, sweet potato fries, hot dogs, or locomocos. It offers grass fed meat and angus meat. They also have a sushi/deli section. They offer your basic sushi rolls and sushi bowls, and deli sandwiches. They also serve breakfast. I love their fried rice! It's my favorite thing to get. You can also get Portuguese sausage, bacon, eggs, or Vienna sausage. It's a good way to start the day. All in all, the food there ain't that bad. read more

Some of the worst service in the main Cafeteria. Sad to say this because almost 90% of the staff is amazing. But it seriously falls short in this area. Lazy lazy lazy half ass service. On and off stage service needs to continue here as well not just on the units of the hospital. This is huge for customer and patient experience. Even if there is great service on each unit if the Cafeteria makes every customer feel inconvenienced because it's 6:45pm and close to closing this makes the hospital as a whole suffer. Please be better and take this constructive critique to heart. Customer experience comes full circle not selective from one area of the hospital to another. read more

3 Stars = "A-OK" according to Yelp.... as far as hospital cafeterias go, this place is A-Ok. not amazing.... but A-OK. on march 18th, after a horrendously long wait to get my blood drawn, i was STARVING because of fasting i had to do before the blood draw. the nearest source of nourishment? Harkness dining room. specials that day included fried chicken, veggie chow fun, and braised pot roast. i ordered the pot roast with some mash potatoes and the "hot veg". this was surprisingly good.... or maybe its because i was starving.... but the meat was moist and tender, the braising juices were tasty, and it came with 3 large pieces of meat! the mash potatoes were your standard box flaked type where you "just add water" and instantly you have your carbs for a week. the hot veg was equally uninteresting.... an over steamed vegetable medley of green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots. but then again.... this is hospital food.... you should't expect high quality dining. also, if you choose to eat outside, they have a nice array of plants surrounding the area, so it feels a little less like a hospital cafeteria, and more like an outdoor cafe..... kinda. p.s. the vending machines right outside of the Harness dining room are the most impressive, cool looking-ones i've ever seen so far. read more

This place is dirt cheap and I love it! The Harkness Dining Room is the hidden gem of downtown Honolulu. For $1.25 you can buy a big fat piece of banana pancake. For under $5, you can get the large plate that consists of a big scoop of fried rice, a mountain of eggs, and 10 pieces of bacon! A friend treated me to lunch here recently and it was surprisingly good. I had sweet and sour pork with rice and vegetables, and it was tasty. She wanted to try the "make your own loco moco," but they said they had run out. It was after 1pm, so I guess it would be safer to get there around noon. They also had a very attractive salad bar, which I think I would like to try on the next walk over here. It had been a number of years since I had been here, and I was quite impressed by how nice the whole place was. When I worked at Straub, I thought their cafe was pretty decent, but this place is definitely a cut above. I didn't feel like I was in a hospital cafeteria at all. They have a pretty good salad bar here, so if you're on a diet you can always count on getting a salad here. They also have rotating specials so menu isn't always the same. The staff is pretty friendly, place is clean, and the food is always standard. Standard as in it's hospital food, so it's better than your ordinary take out place, but it's not the best. Luckily on Oahu, the hospital food is always ok. read more

It's an okay place to eat, being that you're at a hospital. Seems that if you're waiting for hours in a hospital, any food is good food. The drink prices are almost like the theaters price drinks! Food is not to die for, and the snacks seem old. read more

I will definitely have more meals here when in the area. I went for lunch today. They have a short order area, salad bar area, hot dish line, soup, chili, deserts, fountain and bottled drinks of good selection. You select what you want and pay on the way out. The cashier was very fast and friendly. I tried the grilled ahi salad which was good - portion and quality wise. The ahi was rare in the middle just the way I like it. The lettuce was cut in larger than normal chunks but the dressing was good. A lot of first come first serve seating inside and outside and the dining area was clean with extra napkins on each table. At first glance, nothing appealed to me as I walked through this cafeteria during a lunch hour on a weekday here, so I defaulted as I always do when I'm around Queens to Yukis Lunchwagon no more than a few hundred feet away from this cafeteria. But on another visit to Queens I was super hungry and had no cash and had to eat at the cafe, as they accept credit, o-yah, big plus. Had the chili w/brown rice, a super tender roast beef w/brown gravy and broccoli, and side fries. Loved everything but the broccoli, too rubbery. I'd say this would be an above average cafeteria. Then again the last cafeteria I ate at was probably in high school, public high school. read more

3.5 stars. If you don't work @ Queen's hospital, chances are that like me, you are at Harkness under a horrible cloud of ER panic. Queen's is one of the most labrynthine and disorienting hospitals ever, and Harkness (once you even find it, it's in a older part of the building between the main hospital and the medical library on Beretania) is equally difficult to navigate. Enter by walking against the flow of traffic thru the checkout line...what? My life is already nuts enough, thanks. The food is a bit less healthy than I would expect for a hospital. Chili is super salty, no unsweetened drinks except for water, fries and kalua pork...but the quality is good, portions are not giant (good) and the price is very fair. The hotline serice is nice, adds a very homey touch. The grounds are so lovely, all that attention to detail with plants makes it a lovely nook to regroup for a weary family member who's had a rough night. read more
