Usually when I come to New York, my go-to breakfast spot is Jimbo's, but this trip I wanted to try something new. After searching TikTok ("I love TikTok down!" lol), I came across Harlem Breakfast Club. I grabbed my family's orders and walked a few blocks from my aunt's house to this wonderful Black-owned establishment. First thing to know: this is takeout only. They have 2-3 chairs if you want to sit while waiting, and they only allow about five people inside at a time. That said, they move the food out pretty quickly, so the system works. As for service, it's New York, so while they're serving delicious down-south-style food, don't expect down-south hospitality. The young lady taking orders seemed distracted by her phone, and I felt like she wasn't fully following my order since she had to come back twice to confirm it. I ordered the French toast with eggs and beef sausage, plus two orders of the sautéed shrimp and grits. The food was freaking delicious. My family and I tore it up! Everything was packed with flavor and just downright good. Definitely worth trying if you're in Harlem and want flavorful breakfast food. read more

But breakfast deserves the same care and attention as lunch or dinner--it sets the tone for your day. So, I gave it one last try. I ordered grits and eggs again, hoping for a better result. Unfortunately, it was the most disappointing visit yet. It seems like the grits sit too long in a large pot, steaming into a runny mess. The eggs aren't properly scrambled; instead, they're just cracked onto the grill and cooked until no longer raw, then cheese is tossed on top. The result? A plate of eggs where the whites and yolks are visibly separated. Scrambled eggs should be blended and this just wasn't that. I really tried to give this place a chance, but I can't keep spending money on food that consistently disappoints. I started seeing rave reviews online and couldn't help but wonder--are my tastebuds that different? I wish the best for the establishment. Harlem Breakfast Club is a small place that you might pass by if not for the chairs in the storefront, but when you smell the Big aroma and see customer patronage, there's no doubt to feel magnetized to enter. When you enter you'll see above head the menu but on the counter is also a hard copy. The greeter is pleasant and patient. When your order is ready they call your name. I had the 10 dollar deal - creamy grits, crisp beef bacon and eggs, the 12 dollar deal - the seasoned potatoes, tasty hash browns, corned beef hash and eggs, add beef bacon $4. and the price was reasonable. Went to visit New York and was staying in Harlem. This place was walking distance from my hotel. It's a small place with no seating, but the food is worth it! I was indecisive about the shrimp and grits or the French toast. The person at the cash register agreed that WHEN I come back, I'll get the French toast and this time I'll get the shrimp and grits. Whenever I visit Harlem, I'm getting breakfast from here. The food has yet to miss. It's ready fast. I walked 6 minutes back to my hotel with it and it was still hot, patties still crispy. We finally made it to Harlem breakfast club yesterday and oh my goodness what a treat. We tried the shrimp and grits, catfish and grits, grilled cheese with beef bacon, BLT, wings, and the biscuits. Usually, I am skeptical of grits in certain places because they're never creamy enough. When I first got the grits at Harlem breakfast club, I was worried but as soon as I took my first bike, all my worries disappeared. It was flavorful light cream. The wings were perfectly crispy. One morning, I really had a taste for some fish and grits and for some reason was suffering from extreme brain fog. I couldn't think of any place to go off the top of my head. I just so happened to drive by and look up at the right moment and spotted the Harlem Breakfast Club. Now, to be honest I drive by a few times a week and never saw it before. When you are always driving sometimes you catch things but more often than not you miss things. I was glad they caught my eye. I made a U-turn, double parked and ran in. On that day, I got catfish, cheese grits with a cold press watermelon juice. The following week, I was back and ordered salmon cakes and cheese grits. Both times the food was great, I didn't snap picks of my first order but it had me return so that should tell you it was enjoyed. With a small square footage, there is no dine in option. All orders are made to-go. Staff and service are friendly and quick. If there happens to be a delay, you might be lucky enough to snag a seat while you wait. Heard about this place and have been meaning to stop by. Finally made the time. This is a small and quaint breakfast/brunch spot, more like grab and go. I ordered the shrimp and grits, as recommended to me. The cashier asked me if I wanted my grits with cheese; american, cheddar and gouda. I asked which one they preferred and they replied with Gouda so I went with that. Ordered a few extra shrimps grilled and grabbed a watermelon juice to pair. Went home and DEVOURED THIS MEAL. I never would've thought of putting Gouda in grits. The shrimp were large and not overcooked. For a second, I thought to myself these people really know what they're doing here. Not that I doubted it, but just how well everything paired brought me to affirm it out loud. I saw someone say the french toast here was amazing, so I made it my business to get over here today. The restaurant is carry out only and super tiny so I just stood and waited on my order. Unfortunately for me, the french toast was awful. The bread itself was great, but it lacked that sweet, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla flavor french toast is supposed to have. It looks like the bread was dipped in the batter for 1 second and then thrown on the grill 2 and then thrown in a box. Overall, It felt like I was just eating dinner rolls, so I after two triangles, I threw the rest away. Along with a turkey sausage patty, my meal cost $13. It's Sunday morning your grandmother is throwing down in the kitchen and you just know it's about to be a good time. That's what I felt when I ate this food. I got emotional ngl. I may have added a little extra salt from the small tear that ran down my cheek into my grits. The pancakes were fluffy and the grits tasted like actual grits. You know how many restaurants in Harlem sells grits, but I don't think they actually know what grits are supposed to TASTE and FEEL like. This place does! Service was quick and easy. I placed my order over the phone and the guy who took my order was patient with a welcoming tone and he even shared some suggestions with me ( suggested I try the Smoke Gouda in my grits I'm a Cheddar or American cheese girl ). I was told my order would be ready for pick up in 15 minutes. Sure enough my order was done on time and they even gave me a call to inform me my order was ready. Once you enter the place is small but yet cozy and you definitely get old Harlem and a homey feel. The workers were AWESOME!! it was 2 males in the FOH (I believe one of their names was Chris, I didn't get the other guy name but he was cool as well). Both interacted with me (I was the only guest in the store at the moment) quick conversation and some laughs ( a little birdie told me they are looking to expand for more space hopefully table service ). Food: Solid 9.5 it was really tasty and the recommendation of the Smoked Gouda *chef kiss*. I didn't rate the food a 10 because the chicken and the shrimp on the side was greasy at the bottom probably have to find a better way to soak up the grease before packing. I am going to give this a 4. Chicken Wings and Waffles were SLAMMIN!!! The waffle itself was fresh (you can just stand and watch them make it lol), and tasted pretty good. A Harlem based breakfast all day joint? Serving only to go? Food prepared in your face and you're on your way? Sounds like a solid winner - with the density of folks in Harlem and the dearth of breakfast spots (there's lots of brunch places but not a whole lot of breakfast spots - you're limited to IHOP (and now just one in all of Harlem), Jimbos, and a scattering of other joints competing with bodegas). Ah, but not so fast. Not sure when Harlem Breakfast Club opened, but it appears there is room to grow in order to claim the top spot for breakfast in Harlem. The Good - prices are borderline reasonable ($12 (before tax/tip) for basic pancakes, eggs, and choice of meat). The food is prepared when you order (it's not sitting around). Real butter (not margarine) is served with your food. What needs work - in my opinion, a lot. My order came with one piece of sausage (cut in two so it looked like two sausages) and one egg (I asked for it scrambled with cheese). I think they only used half a slice of cheese (American) because I noticed the lack of cheese in my eggs. Restaurant grade syrup (AKA flavored Corn Syrup) was shared as standard - there was no option for pure maple syrup (which I would have paid extra for). Another item to improve is the takeaway utensils. If you're ONLY takeout, then invest in finding quality utensils not just the basic run of the mill fork/knife situation. There's another place in Harlem I get delicious meals from - and they have amazing takeaway utensil (especially forks). I'll include a photo with this review. The menu could use more details - how do we know which types of meat and/or sides you have to order with the entrees? If I have to ask the hostess taking orders about the menu, that takes time away from me being able to make my selections - if there's a line, that will just make the wait longer. Post all the potential entrees and side options on your menu so folks can make their decision before they get to the counter. Most importantly (in terms of areas to improve), the pancakes were dense and doughy. They were heavy when I got them which is a sign - but I've had heavy pancakes that are absolutely delicious (not often, but it can be done). Pancakes can be heavy and cakey delicious - but most often heavy pancakes are dense and doughy. They require lots of syrup to be good in your mouth. That was my experience with Harlem Breakfast Club. My pancake order came with three but I was quickly filled up with just one - that's how dense and how much syrup it required. From the time I placed my order and paid until the time the food was handed to me ready to go was almost 15 minutes - I think that's a long time to cook some pancakes, eggs, and sausage (which I can do in my home faster). Please find ways to be more efficient so that orders can be processed, cooked, and given to the customer faster. All in all, my experience was OK. I'll probably come back again to try the Harlem Scramble - which does sound good. The $5 BEC could be a hit with the prices of inflation (especially if that includes turkey bacon). Tweak the pancake batter recipe, offer some real syrup options, upgrade the plastic utensils, and streamline the process to speed up cooking and providing completed orders to customers - oh and add more cheese to the egg orders - and Harlem Breakfast Club might be on to something. read more

The food was good and the prices aren't too bad. It is not a sit down restaurant, so don't expect to eat Inside. They do move a little slow with making the food but it's worth the wait and the gentleman in the back are very helpful. The only "flaw" I saw was the cashier. She was not pleasant at all and even rolled her eyes while taking our order. I doubt it was personal, she was possibly just having a bad day. But if not, I would suggest having someone with customer service skills at the front taking orders. Other than that, I have no complaints. If you're in the mood for good cheap breakfast, I would recommend this place. Drove up to Harlem after work to get breakfast here. I had shrimp and grits-how delicious! The shrimp was flavorful and not overcooked-I could have ate a bowl of the gravy it was in!-. The grits were smooth and creamy. Moderately priced with great food portions. It is take out only and my food was still hot when I got to the Bronx.
