I should have ordered the salad. The service was fine. Ambiance was upbeat. I've never been served a sandwich in a deli or restaurant with one slice of turkey or ham. Harlem Cafe, what do you say? I had passed by a few times and wondered what this homestyle looking little establishment might offer. Upon entering, I noticed they had a gelato case. I ordered my two favorites and immediately noticed that it was chunky frozen and liquidy at the same time. I get wanting to conserve electricity, but the product was totally ruined. I told the guy behind the counter, but he didn't seem to understand that ice cream is not supposed to be served melted. I ordered a chicken caesar salad salad and as I was waiting, I took a gander over to the cooks station which you can see from the cash register quite easily. The cook was on his phone. Which is interesting because cooks usually need both their hands for cooking. Not this cook. He had one gloved hand on the phone, which was in a big black plastic case, holding it against his ear. His other hand, also gloved, was assembling ingredients for various dishes. When he was done with his call, he simply hung up, put his whole gloved hand -with his phone- back in his pocket, which I believe was in a pair of sweatpants, and then went right back to cooking with the gloved hand. If the owner would like a photograph of this event, feel free to reach out to me and I can provide it. It was at this point that I decided I would not be dining at Harlem Café. I told the cashier, who to his credit, refunded me for the ice cream. He also saw me taking the photograph of the cook and followed me for a block down the sidewalk, trying to get me to come back and speak to his manager. I told him repeatedly not to follow me, but this did not seem to dissuade him. He seemed to understand that this was not going to lead to a great review. It's understandable. Went to a soft opening and was impressed. The vibes are good, the space is comfortable and cozy, the staff is cool and attentive. We had teas, croissants, and lentil soup while trying to figure out where to have dinner and then decided to stay there. We ordered a medium rare steak which came out wayyy over cooked. Then they remade it and it was undercooked. I would recommend taking the heavier items of the menu. A $38 steak at a cafe shouldn't be an option. Service food and decor amazing. When we are in our NYC home I make sure to support all the black owned business in the community. I give everyone a chance if the customer service is not a great experience I never return. The entire staff here were super friendly and welcoming. The space is not large but comfortable so guest always feel cozy while dining. The menu is price fair for the economy and the selections. The food arrived hot fresh and tasty. The scrambled eggs were super fluffy and mouth watering. They have a large selection of muffins and pastries. Try the blueberry scone it was delicious. Our server was Fatima she was awesome we loved her customer service. She made our order was to our satisfaction. A few things that I was also pleased about was the volume of the music. In many places the music is too loud. I would recommend this place there is something on the menu for everyone. I had the avocado toast which was bland and a side salad. The side salad was a full salad plus the toast came with a side salad that the waiter forgot to mention. Depending on where you sit you can be swarmed by flies as if there was a pile of hot garbage nearby. While my iced latte was being made, a gentleman behind the counter emptied a dustpan into an open garbage can sitting between and close to both the coffee machine and the prep bar where food was being prepped. Then he continued to sweep behind the counter. I asked for more milk and the man sweeping and emptying the garbage picked up my drink without washing his hands, took off the lid, poured in more milk and put the lid back on with his unclean hands. First time for us here (it was a soft opening as I understand it). Service was great, met us right at the door and seated us, which was helpful because it was pretty busy. Very simple breakfast menu, which I actually prefer because I don't need a gazillion choices, would rather have a few choices all done well. They've done a good job with the limited space they have. We stopped by hoping to get a quick bite at about 1:30 on a Monday afternoon. We ordered a kale salad and a lentil soup, thinking that would likely come out fairly soon. It took about 40 minutes to come out, even after asking the waiter a couple times after 15-20 minutes and being assured it would be just a few minutes. The lentil soup was fine, but the kale salad, which on the menu listed various ingredients (walnut, dried cherry, dried apricot and lemon honey), turned out to be kale plus a few dried apricots. I came here during the soft opening and vowed to never go again--my friend and I both received unseasoned and oily breakfast food. My friend also said the coffee was not good. But I gave it another chance today to get a quick latte fix. They made my chai latte with Chai Escapes K-pods. And they didn't even do it accurately; they ripped open two pods and mixed it in water with a spoon before adding milk. It tasted like candy. I won't be going back. I had a delicious Belgium waffle with fresh fruit, pureed fruit as the syrup and a side order of bacon. They gave me a hefty amount of bacon as a side order and a cup of delicious coffee. The main thing that disappointed me about this place is they serve these little tiny belgian waffles which look and feel very similar to the microwaveable ones you can get at the store which for the price they're served at is not great. I was hoping for actual, restaurant style belgian waffles. However they are served with fruit and granola which is a plus. In terms of the service the staff was very friendly and the service was prompt. The restaurant is also clean and has a cozy atmosphere. We ended up staying there longer than we expected because they vibe was so inviting, and the cappuccino was yummy. Everything was super good - sandwiches (on Caribbean bread, IYKYK...), super unique pancakes that were almost like a cross between fried dough and pancakes , caramel iced coffee with oat milk SLAPPED, fresh kale/apple/ginger juice brought us back to life... and the total bill was SO reasonable!
