I purchased a 2014 Toyota 4Runner from Harpswell Auto Sales, Inc. with a down payment of over $4,500. Within two weeks of purchase, the vehicle began experiencing serious mechanical and emissions issues, including warning lights and diagnostic fault codes. These problems were reported promptly in writing, and photos and diagnostic information were provided to the dealership at their request. While some early issues were partially acknowledged, additional undisclosed defects later became apparent, including significant structural rust and severe corrosion of the rear lift gate and latch, which appears to have been concealed prior to sale. The lift gate will not remain closed and must be physically restrained, making the vehicle unsafe and unable to pass inspection without approximately $5,000 in repairs. Despite repeated attempts to resolve these issues, the dealership declined responsibility and avoided meaningful written communication. As a result, the vehicle remains defective, and the financial burden has fallen entirely on the buyer/co-signer. I used to have wonderful things to say about Harpswell Auto sales. I referred three family members (to which I didn't get any kind of incentive for) which is whatever. December 2019 I purchased a 2014 Diesel Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. Loved my jeep it has all the bells and whistles. They INSISTED I needed to spend an extra $2,000 on a warranty that will cover ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS according to the smooth talking sales man. My boyfriend asked questions about the warranty if he is sure it really covers everything and the sales man said yes it covers everything all the way down to the tires if they blow out ect. Come to find out this is not true! It's only internally lubricated parts. The other issue I had right off the bat was the tires on the Jeep were not stickerable according to my inspection mechanic I called them within two days of buying my jeep about this issue they claimed they are only responsible to provide what's needed for a inspection and offered me a measly 15% off tires from their tire supplier. Jeep already had a sticker on it they did in that month right before I bought it. The tires had barely any tread on them. Fast forward a year later January 2021 my Jeep goes into "limp mode" and says exhaust filter full dealer service required. I call and am told I need to bring it down the guy at the garage hooks it up to the computer it does it's thing and half an hour later my jeep is all set to go, he tells me "drive at least one hour a week at highway speeds and you will be good to go" cool. We do that and then some, some weekends we drive the Jeep 3-6 hours on the highway. Not even 4 months later here it goes back into "limp mode" and dealer service required. Call him back up , "yup I remember bring it on down" bring it down on April 19th he hooks it back up to the computer and like 20 mins later it's good to go. I was informed at that point "you do realize it costs $250 every time this thing needs to get hooked up to a computer at the Jeep dealer right?" This shouldn't be my problem at this point the Jeep shouldn't keep doing this especially 3 months later. Fast forward to Monday April 26th I got into my Jeep to run into town. It turns on no issue, I go to buckle my seatbelt and all of a sudden the Jeep shuts itself off and will not start again, this time I get a message on my screen "blind spot deactivated dealer service required" I call harpswell up because they are the dealer of the vehicle. At this point he's no help and tells me I need to "call Charlie's because they are the Jeep dealer" well I did that, called Charlie's. They now have my jeep, the "limp mode issue" was fixed because there was a recall and needed an update FROM THE COMPUTER THE SAME DAMN THING HARPSWELL HAD MY JEEP HOOKED UP TO TWICE IN LESS THAN 4 MONTHS TIME. Which the computer would have told them this. Also, the reason why my jeep won't start is because bolts are BROKEN AND MISSING OFF THE MAIN FUEL PUMP and it was worn out which Charlie's found out FROM THEIR COMPUTER, so on Monday the 19th Harpswell had the Jeep hooked up to the computer, IT SHOULD HAVE TOLD THEM SOMETHING WAS WRONG! Also Charlie's discovered my front driver tie rod was barely hanging on and was about to break at any moment, which I am lucky driving my family at highway speeds, (like I was informed by Harpswells mechanic), that didn't happen because who knows what would have happened! Now I will follow up with the last statement I barely drive my jeep and haven't barely added 20,000 miles on it in the year and 4 months I have owned it, parts like tie rods, fuel pumps ect should NOT be damaged to the point that it costs me $3,000 to fix. Yup. My bill at Charlie's is $3,000 and my lovely $2,000 warranty isn't covering ANY OF IT. Charlie's wanted to do $5,000 worth of work to the Jeep because it also needs brakes and new tires as well, which tires I get ok they wear out but they were wearing out because of the tie rod issue. I do not have that kind of money in the middle of a pandemic! I WILL NOT refer anyone to buy vehicles from this place ever again. They sold me a pile of S**t vehicle and did the bare minimum to get it out the door. Very disgusted with all of this. I also attempted to trade the Jeep in for something else however harpswell wouldn't take it because I owe $20,000 on the thing still and they can't offer me that much for it. read more

Bought a 2007 f350 from them! Worse mistake made in my life! So my 18 yo son bought a pickup from them! They first told him 2000 down and night before he was going to get it they said 4600 down. He had 4000 he saved from working his tail off while in school. So when he went down with his grandfather which got the loan for him they took his 4000 down and did a side note for 600 dollars so the truck would be down to were it was worth so the credit union would finance it! Well when they got home I looked it over and the rear tires was bold and the front ones wasn't far behind! Let me remind you that it had a fresh inspection sticker on it within the last 30 days. So I called Harpswell and they said nothing they could do the first time I called and the second time they said they would take 200 dollars off the side note. Which 4 tires cost my son 975 dollars to replace so he could drive it safely! Well about 4 months later he had fluid leaking out of the rear end and took it to a garage to have it looked at. Well it was the rear end that was gone! We called the warranty department and it wasn't covered! So called harpswell and they said they couldn't and wouldn't help at all! So 3400 dollars later it was going again. A month after that the ficm went which caused the turbo to go. Called the warranty department and guess what! Not covered! So took it to our mechanic and had it fixed. When mechanic was working on it he notice the ficm wasn't bolted down, it was just flopping around loosely and that's what caused it to short out! So then the ficm made the turbo to go! So now have to replace turbo as well! Well the turbo was hanging on with one bolt which should of been 3 bolts. While taking off the cold intake the bottom was all cracked. Hmmm Then I remembered harpswell said they put a new head gasket on before they sold it. So you have to take the turbo off and ficm and cold air intake to do it! So they knowingly put all this on the way it was knowing it wasn't right! So I reached out to them and told them about it and he said I'll call you back. No phone call. Called them and he said nothing they could do! So I explained why would you put something back together like they did knowing it's gonna cause problems to the ficm and other things. He pretty much said it wasn't his problem! So they knowingly ripped off a 18 yo kid and had no sympathy for him at all! We even faxed a letter from the mechanic saying what it looked like and pictures proving what the ficm and turbo looked like and the cold air intake. Also the bill we paid to have it done! So this tells me they fixed it enough to get by and sell it and make all they can for it and the heck with the customer! So yesterday called them about the warranty we canceled because it cover nothing worth anything so we rather have the money put back towards the loan. So when talking to the lady in the office at harpswell she said they haven't seen anything from the warranty dept! ( warranty dept sends it to the dealer and then to the lien holder) So I said ok and called the warranty dept again and got the date the check was made and check number and the amount! Called harpswell back and talked to the sales manager and he asked her about it after I gave him all the info and she said something whispering to the sales manager! He comes back on and says she made a mistake and only sent half the amount to the bank! She will be sending 1300 more to the bank. I asked how could she make a mistake sending half when the whole amount is for the Leon holder. The amount is in black and white! Remind you this all happen within 10 minutes! So I'm sure they was gonna just keep the 1300 and didn't think anyone would notice!! I'm sure that's what all the whispering was all about! I've never seen a car dealership as crooked as they are! It's very sad how they do business and take advantage of people with no credit or bad credit! They don't have no respect for their customers as they laugh on the phone while your explaining the hardship that the mechanic issues have cause! Was told that sucks pal! read more
