Extremely rude and unprofessional technician. A technician came out to inspect our water heater as part of a home warranty claim. He explained his findings with a very hostile and confrontational tone of voice, without any prior conversation or reason to be so rude. It was like he was sarcastically reading a script. When we asked him if he used a temperature gauge to check the water temperature he said no, that he uses his hand because "if it's too hot to hold my hand under, it's hot enough, that's physics." We used an actual instant read thermometer and the temperature was 15 degrees lower than what the tech said. The tech was also told of a noxious burning rubber odor that comes off the heater if we try to turn it up - he made zero effort to figure this out and instead sarcastically said "what smell?" It's not that he couldn't help that was so offensive, it is that he was completely out of the blue extremely rude, aggressive, and condescending. I felt unsafe with him in my home. We called the company to complain and they just made excuses for the tech's behavior. Unacceptable. read more

Tech Brian arrived soon after I called the office. My water heater issue was diagnosed by another group, and because Harris Water Heaters was on the warranty list to replace I was directed to them. Brian was friendly and professional and explained things to my utmost satisfaction. I realized that I was dealing w a professional company when he had to reconfigure things which was installed by a different co. After he walked me thru the changes and brought things up to code I could see how much more efficient and safer the changes were. Good responsiveness -- they were available to replace our water heater on a Saturday. Good quality water heaters -- love the Bradford White brand. Very polite tech. Actual work seemed rushed. As you can see in photos, they set the water heater without considering clearances. Ended up pinching gas burner feed on edge of pan and then jerry rigged the cover by cutting away part of it to make it fit. Now it is difficult to remove cover to inspect. Issue could have been avoided if they elevated the tank a couple inches. UPDATE: Big kudos to Harris Water Heaters for sending a tech out immediately (on a Sunday, Father's Day) when they saw my three star review. Jake, the tech, inspected the gas line and assured me there was no damage. He also explained that they do not elevate tanks and often must cut away part of the cover to fit the pan. Glad they confirmed there was no damage to the gas line and explained the situation with the cover. read more

Today I had my first appointment with Harris water heaters company. I wish I could recall the technician's name that came out but I can't. However, he was wonderful. Extremely knowledgeable, willing to troubleshoot to see where the problem was even climbing up on my roof to see if he could see any leakage coming from the roof. I used Harris in the past through the insurance company; they were reliable and as fast as the insurance company allowed. Called to ask for a free estimate to replace a tankless water heater- as the website states and was quoted almost $300 to provide said free estimate. Harris Water Heaters, a family-run business, provided us with outstanding service in many ways. Office person Lorin Harris responded within minutes to the message requesting a new water heater, and she set up an appointment at the day and time we wanted. Brian, the installer, arrived right on time. He was friendly, courteous, competent and efficient. He got the job done promptly, including removal, installation, and clean up. He answered all of our questions and explained the permit approval process required by the City of San Francisco. When the city's inspector checked the work some time later, he informed us that the installation had one thing not done to specs and needed a correction before the permit could be approved. When we relayed this information to Bryan Harris, the manager at Harris Water Heaters, Bryan took charge of the issue immediately. He checked the manual and verified that in fact the installation was done properly by-the-book; Lorin promptly contacted the city inspector and provided proof; and in less than two hours on the very same day, the city inspector acknowledged his error and signed off on the permit, agreeing that the installation was in fact done exactly as it was supposed to be done. I had Harris Water Heater replace my water heater a little over three years ago, paying about $3k for an American Standard 50gal, which they said is reliable and durable, plus there is a 6 year warranty on labor and parts. Yesterday the heater just stopped working. First I called PG&E, not suspecting an almost new water heater could go bad. The PG&E guy affirmed the gas is operable and speculated it may be the thermo sensor gone bad. He said I could get a replacement for $20 and install it myself, or pay someone a few hundred bucks to do it. Remembering the warranty I called Harris. They said they will send someone and charge a $149 inspection fee and any repair will be covered by the warranty. I agreed. When the Harris technician completed the inspection, he called his office then turned around to ask me to agree to pay an additional $199 to "process" the warranty! I was surprised and protested. The tech said he was instructed by the office to demand this payment. Eager to get the hot water back quickly I relented and the heater is fixed within 20 min. I am writing this for those who need similar services - be careful with the warranty and consider your options for choosing a product and service provider. I had a bad taste with both of my choices. read more

He arrived on time (!), checked out the problem, took the time to explain to me what he was diagnoising and finding as he went, and solved the problem. While he was here he also talked to me about ways to trouble shoot in the future, changing laws in CA I'll have to be concerned with eventually, and other useful info. May be good if you contact them directly for an issue, my experience working with them via a home warranty claim has been that they are on the warranty company's side, not yours. (I can't blame them, I imagine it's how they make a lot of their business. But it left a really bad impression on me.) Long story short, we purchased our home in April and our water heater was working. We have written proof of this from the inspection report, our pre-close walkthrough, and also there's the fact that I've felt hot water with my own hands from the sink since owning the property. Our water heater was no longer working as of last week, we submitted a claim, and Harris sent a technician to assess. They refuse to send us a written report, and after multiple conflicting conversations with both the warranty company and Harris we have found out that Harris submitted a report saying it is their "professional opinion that that was a 'pre-existing condition". We also found out that the report claimed our home is "gutted" - yes, we are remodeling a single bathroom. I'm not sure when a bathroom remodel came to equal a house being gutted. Based on other reviews it seems like they do quality work if you work with them directly. If you're working through a warranty company, good luck. read more

We had one of the technician came over to change the control panel on the water heater recently. He is nice and got the job quickly done within a couple hours. HOWEVER! He didn't close the gas valve enough so in the next 24 hours we had been having gas leak in the room where water heater is located. We had to call PGE the next day to fix it.:-( read more

I called the company based on a recommendation from an electrician. The owner called back and answered all my questions about using a hybrid water heater. He also coordinated the install with the electrician for just a few days after I ordered it. The technician came by for a pre-install inspection as the location was a tight fit. He explained the installation process and answered more questions. On the install day, he came on time and kept me informed of each step (e.g., turning off the water and then the gas). He also worked with the electrician to speed up the install. He was polite and friendly in spite of all my questions. A hybrid is an expensive water heater. There was quite a bit of work to do the install so I felt it was worth it. They will also handle the rebates for me so no paper work to fill out. read more

I reached out to our home warranty (First American Home Warranty) that same day, and they made arrangements with Harris Water Heaters, Inc. I got a call from Harris that same Saturday, and they came the very next day, Sunday, to assess the work that needed to be done. Bryan went over the work that was involved and broke down the pricing so that it was easy to understand. They came to replace the water heater at 9 am on Monday! Their quality of service including responsiveness, communication, turnaround time and work exceeded my expectations. When we first moved into our new place, our water heater started to leak so we contacted our home warranty company. Hence they suggested Harris water heaters, it has good reviews on Yelp so we just went with it, pulled an permit and went with everything they suggested. So even though it's still under home warranty, we still paid over $700 at the time. After less than 1.5 years, the tank already started leaking, and the water heater just shut down itself. So we immediately contacted Harris Water Heaters hoping they could come over and take a look. They responded and made an appointment for us, but they said it would cost $250 just to come out and inspect, whatever problems they diagnose, the cost would add on top of the $250. We asked a few questions hoping they can shed some light, but the person or owner on the phone was very impatient and didn't want to answer any of our questions. He basically just wanted to ask whether or not we want to keep our appointment. And when we said we wanted to cancel, he just immediately hung up the phone. We later contacted two other companies, they either patiently answered our questions or helped us diagnose over the phone. They were way more helpful than this company. We hired a different contractor to install the replacement and he mentioned there was a mistake that Harris Water Heaters originally installed that costed the very short life span of the water heater. We had to pay another $600 just for labor to replace the water tank in less than 1.5 years. We will not recommend this company. read more

Our Takagi tankless water heater stopped working and we called Harris. A Technician showed up, and after running the heater confirmed a diagnostic code of 121. Then he started saying that since they didn't install the system he couldn't guarantee it would fix the problem just by replacing the flame sensor and the igniter and descaling the system for $1,000. Since it was the weekend, he wouldn't be able to get the parts until Wednesday. But, he could install a brand new system for approximately $4,000 over the weekend. He charged us $300 for the service call. We decided to think it over the weekend. After looking at the owner's manual online, I found that code 121 could mean: a bad sensor, igniter or low gas pressure which the technician never checked! This was after he was consulting with with a Takagi expert on the phone! As it turned out, the problem was with the earthquake shutoff valve which was somehow tripped! All it needed was a reset and we had hot water! I can't believe we spent $300 on a call and the guy didn't even do the 3 basic things that the service manual recommended. This type of service gives all plumbers a bad reputation! This is a good lesson to all: Have the owner's manuals handy and refer to the troubleshooting information to validate what the technician is saying. read more

Woke up to water on the ground around our water heater. We called our warranty company and they sent Harris Water Heaters. Harris contacted us right away and had a tech at our home with an hour or so, less than 2 hours for sure. Technician Brian with Harris immediately identified that the water heater was broken and could not be repaired. Brian called the warranty co. got approved for full replacement and got a new water heater on site with a second man to help with getting down into our basement and installed in 3 hours. Brian gave us straightforward honest out of pocket expenses that we would have to cover that were code requirements for updated installations in our city. These upgrades were done professionally and the workmanship was clean. We have had very good experiences with our warranty company sending competent, professional repair services (First American Home Warranty Co.). I will start this review by saying that I didn't hire Harris water heaters but I still got five star service from them. I had gotten scammed by another water heater company and a newly installed water heater was not being serviced under warranty and I was in a state. I called for a second opinion and spoke with Bryan, and he spent a good 20 minutes with me explaining the whole procedure, "talking me off the ledge", as well as giving me advice to deal with the other company. He didn't have to take time out of his day to do this as I wasn't even a customer, but to me that is ethical five star service. How a company or person comports themselves when you're not even paying them is a hood indicator of their professionalism. read more
