The food here is ok, it doesn't suck, but it's not anything that special. I had the Kobe burger and it was your normal burger. Not too juicy, not too dry, but not too flavorful either. I came here for brunch - it was nice, but I wouldn't recommend it for brunch for a few reasons: 1. The food I ordered was not that great. I got the Dungeness Crab Benedict, which did not taste good. The crab was weirdly shredded and did not taste well done. Also, it was a bit too heavy on the sauce. 2. The coffee wasn't that good; it tasted like hotel coffee and was cold. However, the atmosphere was nice and the staff was great! They have a ton of TVs, which would be great for games. I would like to come back for drinks at night since it seems like a great bar. The two biggest things that I try to hide from prospective suitors. Last week, I watched the VP debate at Slide, and felt like I had a scarlet "R" emblazoned on my ample-thanks-to-Charmin chest. Especially when I asked a volunteer for a receipt for my $10 mandatory Obama donation. So yesterday, looking for a slightly darker, less obtrusive Happy Hour spot to don my little suit and matching scarlet letter whilst watching the Presidential debate, my co-worker suggested Harry's. In Pac Heights. Since I've dated half of the neighborhood with less than stellar results, I almost wore a disguise, but decided to suck it up and hold my head high. And I had a terrific time. Harry's is certainly worth the risk of being seen by former love interest a-hole brokers. In fact, isn't that their slogan? Great place with plenty of large screens to watch a debate or sports. Tons of seats to sit back and drink your feelings. The food, and people, smelled great. The crowd was nice and no one judged me for going against the SF norm. In fact, I think there were even a few McCain supporters there. I've not yet decided for whom I'll vote, but I'm sure that Harry's is a winner. read more

When you are wandering around the Fillmore on Thanksgiving Day, wondering what's open for a snack in the afternoon before the big feast, pick Harry's. Well, the other place is open next door, but the boys in the group will have their eyes glued to the football playing on the television screens at Harry's, so you might as well go there. Get the artichoke dip. It's got a nice little kick to it, and you can taste all the artichoke goodness they put into it. It goes very well with the pita bread! Skip the grilled cheese. I hear it wasn't anything spectacular. The tacos appetizer are okay too. The Kobe beef sliders are good. They come with a side of fries. The fries at Harry's are extra crispy and actually quite tasty. I'm a little annoyed that the server didn't remind us that the sliders came with fries because we also ordered a giant side of fries with some powdered flavoring on top. I never thought I would say this, but TOO MANY CRISPY POTATOES! 3 "A-OK" stars for the food and mid-day experience. This is my old watering hole, when I used to live 3 blocks away off California several years ago. Been here many times back then and revisit it occasionally, even recently. You'd think it might be a touristy bar, or daytrippers from the bridge and tunnel crowd, what with the many restaurants in the FIlmore corridor and the little shops nearby. Or at least filled with lovely hotties since Betsy Johnson is across the street, and the Shu Uemura salon down the block. But it is really mostly a neighborhood bar, and mostly a sausage fest. The crowd is mostly 30 somethings, with a sprinkle of 20 something drunk dickheads in suits about 5 years out of college time wise, but still in the Fraternity behavior wise. And there is a smattering of 40, even 50 somethings, even a couple of older people who hopped across the street from The Elite cafe, or the Grove next door, or Jackson Filmore up the street. The crowd is mixed but mostly White, mostly relaxed, and usually friendly. The bar is a great, grand wood bar, related to the famous Harry's Bar in Italy. Harry Denton opened this place decades ago, back when he was the hottest thing in SF bar making, with Harry Denton's Club and the Starlight Room in addition to this place. They have added several large flatscreens for sports. They used to squeeze in a jazz trio on the weekends, not sure if they still do. They offer some exotic Martinis, and they do serve food. But most people come here only for the meat market aspects of the place, not the meat on a platter. They still have the elevated table seats for dining, and the classic long counter between the tables and the bar, which is the optimal place to walk through on a busy night to get maximum Eyeball time and Tactile feedback from the crowd seated and standing in the narrow ally. Service people are friendly and professional. Drinks aren't a complete rip-off. Bartenders are efficient and hustle. Come here some time and you might get lucky. I know I have. read more

Eh. Came to Harry's last night for a coworkers going away party. Apparently it's the only bar within walking distance of this part of town, so I guess one can't be too picky, right? Harry's is a sports bar from yesteryear. It's old school with an interesting mix of people eating and drinking. On on end of the room, there was a table full of old dudes swapping stories about their glory days, and on the other end of the bar, youngsters were doing shots and spilling drinks on people. Definitely a generational clash, but it takes all kinds to make a bar tick. One of my default drinks is always a greyhound. You know when you're just approaching a bar, and you get caught off guard by the bartender when you're not quite ready to order? Those are the situations where I just blurt out 'whiskey/soda,' or 'greyhound.' In this instance, I'm beyond stoked that I went for the 'hound, because they use a juicer to squeeze fresh grapefruit juice into the drink. It was, hands down, the best greyhound I've ever had in my life. I'd go back just for that alone! I sure hope I don't come across as sexist or something, but I've never understood why bar owners choose to put under-skilled, female bartenders with giant boobs wearing next to nothing behind the bar, instead of stocking the place with people who can actually sling a drink. It happens all the time at flashy clubs and sports bars. I mean, I 'get' why it happens... but it just seems counterproductive to me. I'd rather get a great drink from a quality bartender than a mediocre cocktail while perving out on some half-dressed college girl any day. After a rough first time, we went back to give this place another chance. We did not alert the manager(although asked) so that we could get the "regular" treatment. It was what we hoped and wanted before. The drinks were great and the shishito peppers,calamari, and chicken bites came out promptly, tasty, and fresh. We had our waitress and staff checking on us constantly and our experience was pleasant and warm outside with heaters. This place seems to be a local favorite as it was busy again. This bar is like having sex with a really hot guy only to find out he is dumb as a rock and totally sucks in bed. When you see the decor you think "cool". It is old school dark wood all nicely polished with brass pole accents to divide the bar area from the raised platform of low cocktail tables behind it. The bar is stocked with beautifully presented shelves of booze and they have those great hard cover bar menus with some eats and creative cocktails that are, surprisingly, not too terribly expensive for this sort of place. That is where the initial attraction begins, but then when you peel away the layers you realize this bar just isn't worth your time. Just like with dumb hot guy it is nearly impossible to have a meaningful conversation. The DJ is pumping the music so loud you feel dumb yourself by the time you leave. For what? They don't even have a dance floor....unless you ask the ditsy girls dancing on the cocktail tables. They seem to think any wood surface is a dance floor, which works out well for the guys who think a line about cooking you breakfast is the golden key into your pants for the evening. Harrys, you seem to have such potential, but I left feeling so unsatisfied, which is really too bad since you otherwise could be another place in our circulation of bottomless mimosa brunches. Fillmore Street is better known for good restaurants, cute fro yo and ice cream shops, clothing boutiques and wine bars. I came in on Saturday night briefly for a birthday party and immediately noticed the d-bags, cougars, older couples, and couples in general. The obnoxious music goes along splendidly with the crowd. Plus one star for the fast, efficient servers/bartenders who seemed to have no problem with splitting the tab, bringing us water, etc. I also like the tables out front which are ideal for people watching on a nice day for lunch or for the smoker crowd. read more

I love this place. This experience is from the bar only. I didn't try any of the food here. It's really a nice cozy, warm, and chic bar. It's a block away from my friends house so it was very convenient for us to walk down to grab a drink. It seems like this place is packed regardless of the day. I love the diversity of the joint. It's not pretentious and it just seems like every one is welcomed here. You know how you feel like certain bars gives out that, "you don't belong here" vibe. You will not get that here. The burgers were very tasty (again, I love my meat). 3 stars because the blood orange margarita was insanely overpriced for the size and the quality, and the lack of service at that little quasi-bar. If you want ridiculously lame and inattentive servers, Harry's is for you. I was there the other evening (at 6:30pm), and made the mistake of thinking that the girl who took our order would actually place it. After 10 minutes, I went up to the bar and asked and she said something to the effect of "You'll have to wait since some other customers were here first." Ten more minutes later and still no Sazerac. I actually left before the drink purportedly arrived, but it's quite possible it never did come out. Evidently, Harry's is where good times go to die. read more

Popped in here the other night. Nice to see the place is still jumping after all these years. Walked in and couldn't even get a spot at the bar so I popped across the street and had a drink at the Elite Cafe before bouncing back just in time to find a prime spot at the bar. Had a couple drinks and also ordered an appetizer of nachos ($8.95 plus $1.95 to add grilled chicken). Nachos were just okay. The portion was certainly plentiful and I paid extra to have it with grilled chicken, but the temperature was lukewarm at best and the cheese wasn't what I am used to seeing on nachos. it was a really watery, strange light-colored cheese sauce that kinda grossed me out. Sad, because over the years, I have always loved coming in here for appetizers and to dine at the bar. I had ordered it before too, but had forgotten how bad it was. I won't be ordering that again. As always, the cocktails were good...the bartender that had been helping me completely disappeared though and then reappeared like an hour or so later. She came up, did something with her register and left. I told the other girl working there that she had totally forgotten about me and was told that she hadn't. Yes, I guess I really enjoyed sitting there all that time, forgotten and waiting for my next drink and my bill. I used to really love this place and I still like it, but this visit was far from magical. In this competitive market, Harry's had better step up their game or be left in the dust. Then again, judging by the full bar, I guess people just don't care. As always, a great place to meet and sometimes eat. read more

Came here during the Fillmore Street Jazz Festival and it was actually pretty cracking (which is a given I guess, because it's one of the few bars in that hood). Not giving them one star for the vibe, I'm giving them one star because when I was getting a beer I saw a roach behind the bar, and I'm not talking a blunt roach baby, I'm taking the nasty ass little bugs that our amigos south of the border refer to as "la cucaracha". Where there's one roach there's usually more. Step your cleaning game up you nasty motherfuckers, having roaches crawling around behind the bar is unacceptable, and for that reason I would never eat here. I don't even want to think about how gross there kitchen probably is. read more

This past Tuesday, I was going to stay home and work. The road to hell being paved with good intentions, what actually happened was quite different from what I intended for the evening. By 10 PM, KK and I were at Harry's, comfortably seated at the far end of the bar. I knew Tuesdays to be half-off wines - and at the top of the menu of white wines, I spotted the magic words: "Cakebread Sauvignon Blanc: $49". Excellent. Not being terribly hungry, but then not being full either, we ordered the salmon toast (smoked salmon atop toast w/ a salad) and a Cobb Salad. What proceeded to happen for the next four hours was nothing short of fantastic. We had SO much fun. That said, we had this amazing night together despite the less-than-friendly service from the bartenders, and the mediocre food (and I'm being generous) from the kitchen. And I have a major pet peeve: restaurants should not serve good wine in small itty-bitty glasses; it kills the drinking experience. I asked if they had bigger glasses, and I was informed that they ONLY have small glasses for both their red and white wines. DING. But the Cakebread wine was, as expected, delicious. At half-off, the price is actually LESS than what I can get it for at the winery. With the wine finished, we ordered the well-known (and deservedly so) Bloody Marys. It was as perfect as it has always been. Throughout the whole night, the "Cucumber Gimlet" boldly written on the chalkboard above the bar had been calling my name, so as our last drink for the evening, we finished it off with the gimlet. As usual, I had a fabulous time w/ KK. The evening itself gets 10 stars. The establishment, however, has some room for improvement. A smile or a friendly word or two from the bartender never hurts, and whoever they have cooking in the kitchen needs a lesson re: how to toast bread, where to buy lox, and how to grill chicken (while keeping its juices in) for a Cobb Salad. Harrys Bar looks nice inside, serves good food, and has a friendly, competent staff. Harrys Bar also has a mess of pacific heights kids howling and partying. Harrys Bar also has a DJ but no dance floor. This compels drunk girls to dance wherever they're standing, even if it's in the aisle or in front of the bar when you're trying to get a drink or right behind you when you're trying to carry 3 mixed drinks back to your table at once. Harrys Bar is really loud. You'll wonder why you and your friends all decide to meet at a place where no one can have a conversation. Harrys bar has a decent amount of other eating and drinking establishments nearby. update: This place is actually pretty cool when it's not too crowded, and the staff is also pretty cool even when you break the rules accidentally, so another star for them. Come here on a weeknight if you're up fillmore for some reason. update 2: The cobb salad here is so good that when you're sharing a cab home with someone you care about and she forgets to take the leftover box with her when she gets out at her apartment, you might not say anything and eat the salad yourself when you get home. But... everything else i have is just down the middle. Nothing to write home about (when there are 2000 other places and 500 do it better). The 2 hour wait for a table at Dosa on Fillmore was the only reason my date and I stepped foot into Harry's. It seemed crowded and noisy from the sidewalk but we both really wanted a cocktail after a long week. Upon entering, I wondered if this location was modeled after the original Harry's in Venice (Italy) given the decor and the overall theme, but then I saw a DJ setting up his turntables. Probably not the same Harry's. She and I both noticed the inconspicuous special drink menu that was plastered on the mirror behind the bar. There were some interesting choices that gave this place some potential until... 1. Pineapple lychee martini - meh. Their martini glasses are small to begin with. It's served with a garnish of a single lychee and a HUGE chunk of pineapple offsetting the volume of the liquid for a total of 3 mediocre tasting sips. 2. Mango mojito - Waaaay too sweet. A glass full of simple syrup would have been better. 3. Hendricks cucumber gimlet - tasty. This would be a perfect summer drink with a great balance of tart and cucumber mixed with my favorite gin. I think it would be better served in a highball glass on the rocks but what do I know? The atmosphere wasn't bad for a sports bar on a Friday night - pretty good looking 20-30 something crowd with some random older bar flies and dare I say, cougars scattered throughout. An older Caucasian gentleman sitting next to us at the bar struck up conversation by asking me about my ethnicity: Older man: "Are you Chinese?" Me: "No, I'm Korean". Older man: "Well I grew up in Chinatown" Me: "???" Older man: "All my friends are Chinese" Me: "That's great - is anyone sitting in this stool?" Older man: "People used to be very racist back in the day" Me: "I bet. I remember getting teased when I was in grade school." Looking for a good place to watch the big game? Harry's is definitely your spot! My friends and I went for the Final Four and while UCLA didn't win, enticing lots of curses and head shaking from our table, the service, drinks and food more than made up for our somber mood. It was the bright spot in our dark hour. I had a blood orange, champagne cocktail that barely touched the table before I gulped it down in a flurry of glass to lip action - so unique and tasty. While I didn't eat any food this time around I have in the past and can attest that the burgers are fabulous. This is not the time to think about your diet, go for the real deal and indulge while you make fists at the TV. The service was surprisingly attentive considering the huge crowd that had come for the game. Our server was helpful and quick which I really appreciated. If you happen to make it on a Friday or Saturday night you'll be impressed with the bustling and diverse crowd. After hitting up Roam burger, my friend took us to Harry's as one of the only places to get a drink in Pacific Heights. Doable if you are in the area, but definitely not worth going out of the way for. The bar is split into two sections - the bar, and the seating area for the restaurant. The ambiance is like a cramped BJ's brewpub but without the beer selection. Also the craft cocktail selection isn't really impressive. On the menu and behind the bar is the list of the 11 featured cocktails, and they can't deviate a lot from that. Asking if they could make something special, I was told they were missing apricot liquor and a few other ingredients. Old Fashioned, Manhattan's and mules they can do, but nothing really unique. On a Friday night the place gets pretty packed. It wasn't a bad crowd, but I'd prefer a dive bar or a real craft cocktail bar. As I said, this really feels like the only option in the area, and they can get away with being middle of the road. read more

Had a late afternoon lunch, and they were still serving brunch. I think I'd have rather seen their lunch menu, but I'm a sucker for chilaquiles, so that's what I went for. They were decent, but I've had better (in Mexico, but that's to be expected). Also got the blackberry mint fizz (something like that), and it was just okay... wasn't as sweet as I was hoping it to be. We were in a large group so we got the big corner table by the door, and they were willing to split the check for us at the end. Always helps! read more

I like picking how rare a burger is cooked, which while it usually only happens at shishi gourmet places (and really only should happen at these places, because you don't want to order your grade F patty medium), is a luxury that I can enjoy. After all, there are few things as satisfying as a cold beer and a great burger. The burger did not disappoint at Harry's. The medium-cooking was probably more like medium rare, but as I like my steaks practically mooing, I guess I wasn't compelled to send it back. Fries were good too. And the booths were spacious, lush, and comfy. I'm docking this place 1 star because it is deafening. I went to Harry's Bar with some co-workers on a Friday for Happy Hour. For some reason, I was expecting an older run down type of bar from the previous reviews. The place had a slightly older "Cheers" type decor, but the tables, chairs, and stools were very comfortable and pretty new; I liked it a lot. The waitresses here are great eye candy so that for me is worth a return trip in the near future. I'm not sure the drinks were discounted, so I don't know how good a happy hour place it really is for cheap drinks. I spent $13 on a Manhattan and Fat Tire. But the food is darn good. I had the best Mozzarella cheese sticks I've tried in a long time. They are big and cheesy served with a real tasty sauce. Once again for all you fellas out there, GREAT LOOKING WAITRESSES!!! Drinks were good but very weirdly bad service. Waitresses should let you see the bill before requesting a tip.

I lived across the street from Harry's for 2 years. When we first moved in, we occasionally stopped by for a cocktail at times when they weren't too busy. The bartender (snake as we called him) never remembered who we were even though he was introduced to us plenty of times when we first moved into our apt. The running joke with my roommate(s) became; "Let's go to Harry's," then laughter; as if we were ever serious about going there. It's too crowded, meat market, they play the music SO LOUD that you cannot bother to have a conversation, and the drinks are expensive (especially when you live across the street). It's not relaxing that's for sure. I will give it two stars because it's "okay" for lunch, as long as there isn't a game on TV. Perhaps if I was 22-26ish I miiight be into this type of scene, but nowadays I would much rather be able to talk to and hear my company/friends. Although I enjoyed crazy, loud bars in college, today I am not so much into get wasted finding myself singing (aka yelling/singing) "Hands, touchin' hands Reachin' out Touchin' me Touchin' you Sweeeet Caaarooline Good times never seemed so good, Chorus so good so good so good " If you're into that, you might enjoy the place.
