We visited Hart House Restaurant on May 31, 2025, to celebrate a friend's birthday brunch, and it was such a beautiful experience. We enjoyed a delicious spread of breakfast dishes including eggs, toast, bacon, heirloom tomato toast on sourdough with whipped feta and pistachio pesto, plus home fries topped with a fried organic egg. Everything was incredibly fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. What makes Hart House even more special is the people. We came on a Saturday dinner in May and the weather was beautiful, and the lawn is nice with a great view of the lake. Our server was very friendly and nice, and the food was great as well. Came here for Happy Hour on Saturday and it was pretty quiet. We sat in the sun room which was breezy on a hot day which was nice. With four people, we ordered the beef burgers and a Caesar salad. The salad was pretty tasty and we though the burgers were great too (albeit a bit pricey!). The fries that came with the burgers could be better as they seemed a bit hard. Overall, the ambiance was nice and the server came to check on us a few times throughout our meal so that was also very nice. read more

I have been a fan of this elegant restaurant for over thirty years. As a wheelchair user, I can verify that it is fully accessible and the food is delicious. Yesterday at 2 pm Anthony warmly greeted my friend and I and set up a beautiful table with a south facing view of the lake as the staff prepared for the New Year's Eve rush. Our server was lovely. I think her name was Amelia? She helped us decided what to order and the service was perfect. I have often sat on the patio in the summer and will return again soon. It's nice to see a Heritage Building serve the community so well. (I'd love for there to be more designated accessible parking spots.) Hopefully their espresso machine is repaired soon. Food: 5/5 - some of us had the 3 course dine out Burnaby while the remainder ordered a la carte. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their food. I had the seared steelhead fish which was cooked to perfection. Checkout the photos of the entrees we much tasted better than the actual photos. Service: 5/5 - it was a sloow start to get even our bread. We had 6:45 pm reservations but didn't eat right away. Our server did a good job asking if we needed anything. The fiancé got a chicken liver pate and the duck -- those were the main thing he got that differed from me -- and he got food poisoning after. Which can happen due to bad luck, but it wasn't the best experience for a date night. I did like my soup though! Had a special group event at Hart House with a set menu. Place was so noisy you couldn't hear what people at your table were saying. Food itself was OK, though I was so thirsty later on - that tells me there was a lot of salt in that meal. There was a surprise $12 charge for the tenderloin which was not indicated on the menu. Worse of all, we were yelled at and made to feel stupid for making a request to have individual receipts! Autogratuity of 20% was charged for this kind of horrendous experience is completely inappropriate. Am never going back and others should avoid it too. read more

Beautiful restaurant by Deer Lake! We had a wonderful brunch at Hart House Restaurant. We opted for indoor dining. The view for indoor dining is not as nice as the outdoor one but we were still able to see a glimpse of the lake. The door was open to the outdoor dining section so there was a nice gentle breeze at where we were seated. Their menu changes from time to time but I ordered their Smoked Steelhead & Herb Frittata, a mango tonic drink and basque cheesecake. The frittata was really good. It wasn't dry at all. I know it weird but I love the sourdough and the potatoes a lot. This is coming from someone who don't normally eat sourdough at first, I thought it was just plain bread but it was slight toasted and buttered already. We sat and chat for a long time... to almost 4 pm. I checked their hours when I got home and turns out their brunch service ends at 3pm. I am surprised that they didn't kick us out and still refill our water I definitely would come back to try other menu items :) read more

We attended a private function and it was in the private room off the back of the Hart House and was a spectacular day and beautiful views of Deer Lake. The food was exceptional and the service was just as exceptional as the food. It only holds about 22-24 sit down and probably 40 ish for stand up or Tapas style. Been at Hart House for a wedding before but it was outdoors so have never been inside. A friend suggested going to Hart House for Dine out so was excited to see what the old manor looks like. First off, you step in and a hearty fireplace greets you. If that doesn't give one a homey feel I don't know what will! The host greeted us with warmth, checked our vaccination records, and we were happy that all the tables were very spaced out so we felt very covid-safe. Our server was very warm, attentive, and friendly. We were off to a good start! For $48/person, my two friends and I decided to all order from the Dine Out menu. The actual dine out menu varied slightly and offered more choices than what was posted on the Dine Out Vancouver website, which was a nice surprise! I ordered the Humboldt squid, Braised Lamb Ragu Pappardelle, and the sticky toffee pudding. The Humboldt squid was a generous portion cooked in a Mediterranean style in which the squid was barely rubbery in texture. Solid start to the meal! Next came the braised Lamb Ragu Pappardelle, which I had previously smelled the delicious aroma entering into the dining room. The dish was a huge portion and the lamb was very hearty but did not taste gamey. It was a great pasta dish and definitely hit the spot. Finishing off the meal was the sticky toffee pudding, which was quite generous in size. I'm usually not much of a dessert person but ate this entire pudding up as it wasn't overly sweet and I loved the sweet and salty flavour contract profile. We made reservations for a Friday night to end a busy week at work for the 2 of us. Though I have been Hart House for summer weddings by the water but I have dined once for company Christmas dinner a long time ago. We also wanted to try the Dine Out Vancouver 2021 menu. The venue is beautiful entering the historical building. It was a day after snowfall and they had their fireplace with log of wood burning. It felt so warm and cozy, like coming home for Christmas. :) We are seating quickly at a table upon entering the door to the dining room. I looked around imagining families of past how they lived in the space. Perusing the menu that was provided to us and we ordered the following: appetizer: 1) sformato cacio e pepe - my appetizer was delicious and something different. Great crunch on the top with bottom part softer with egg. Great choice to try something different. 2) smoked tomato seafood chowder - my partner's appetizer and he loved the crispy pork belly that was carefully placed in the soup. Smoky and hearty. entree: 1) chorizo crusted arctic char - my partner's entree and he really how perfectly cooked and charred of the fish. With the crispy Chickpeas, olives, and Arugula, Romesco Sauce paired perfectly with each bite of the fish. 2) confit duck leg - my entree was flavourful and moist. The duck was on top of braised lentils which made the dish very comforting and nourishing. Along with dish, pancetta, tomato sauce, kale, Garlic pangrattato and salsa verde brought flavours that worked well for this dish. dessert: 1) chocolate hazelnut feuilletine with whipped milk chocolate ganache and salted caramel 2) basque country cheesecake with huckleberry reduction and vanilla bean cream Both desserts are equally delicious. If you are looking for something chocolate you won't go wrong with chocolate hazelnut feuillentine, rich and chocolately. I enjoyed the cheesecake more as I like dessert that is not too sweet and the cheesecake tasted so good with the tartness of the huckleberry reduction. The h'orderves were nice. 2 options that day: tuna tatami in mini ice cream cones topped with wasabi mousse and fried chicken with sriracha mayonnaise sauce in a waffle cup. This restaurant was amazing on all fronts. The building is beautiful, lovely decor, the ambience was set even before sitting down at our table. We came on a weekday night. It was very quiet - apart from a party that was going on upstairs we were one of the only two tables of patrons in the main dining area. This was surprising that there weren't more people when the food and drinks came and everything was absolutely amazing!! We tried out a lot of dishes - the Albacore Tuna Tartare, Daily Risotto, the Braised Almb Shank, French Fries with Truffle Aioli, and the Lemon Tart - and there was not one dish that wasn't a 5/5 on both prsentation and taste. The staff was extremely friendly and helped us pick out some good items. They even let us freely explore the restaurant and take pictures. It's been 2 - 3 weeks since I was there but this restaurant made such an impression that I had to come back and give it my 5-star review. I booked a table for two. My friend arrived first and waited quite a while for someone to show up and seat her. When I arrived a few minutes later there was no one at reception but I saw my friend so I seated myself. Service was sporadic. One dish was underdone and a soup dish wasn't hot. No offer to bring bread to the table. After the main meal we ordered dessert and a decaf coffee and decaf cappuccino. We asked several times about the coffee. After we had finished dessert the coffee finally arrived but the server brought a regular cappuccino instead of decaf. The manager came over and offered to take the coffee off the bill. He later returned and said he understood the main dishes weren't satisfactory so offered to take those off too. Even with those items removed the bill came to close to $80 for one drink each, one shared salad and one shared dessert. I have eaten at this restaurant several times over the past few years, and today was such a disappointment. My friend and I agreed that we would go elsewhere for lunch next time. read more

The company I work for held our annual Christmas lunch here this year and we were happy overall. The staff were very friendly and the service we received was great. The owners of my company are very particular about certain things and the Hart House came through for us which made my CEO very happy. The food was great however, it could have been warmer. It wasn't cold but it wasn't hot either. That kind of comes with buffet style catering though. The desserts were fabulous and I had actually been looking forward to them the most. The restaurant is located in a beautiful park, just off the highway. It's a cute, cozy heritage mansion. When I was there two parties were occurring at the same time. They have a main dining area and a sunroom. I think they were a little busy and we waited about 5 minutes at the entrance for someone to come by. There was no one anywhere near by we could call. This is odd for a higher end restaurant. I think they may have been short staffed as we did have to wait a while for our dishes to be cleared as well as our bill to come. We ordered the lamb and surf and turf for our main entrees. We shared the octopus as an appie and a chocolate cake as our dessert. Overall the flavours were good, but we found both of our mains to be a little over cooked. Especially the veggies. My dad gave me a gc for this place. I don't think I would eat here otherwise. Growing up in Burnaby, everyone knew about the Hart House from their 2 for 1 entrée coupon cards that were sent to each household in the mail back in the 90's. In my mind, I used to call this place the 2 for 1 restaurant because I used to get so many advertisements in the mail from this restaurant. If this place was really good, why would they have to advertise so much with their 2 for 1 coupons? I finally convinced myself to try this place for the first time in about 30 years since the restaurant first opened in 1988. I ordered from three course chef's menu. Heirloom Tomato salad: everything tasted fresh like it was picked from the backyard and eating it in the park out in the patio made it more enjoyable. The herb vinaigrette dressing was on the tasteless bland side. The Surf & Turf: the grilled pork belly was harder than an Oh Henry! candy bar aka overcooked and the portion size was so tiny. The rest of the dish -- scallops, corn polenta, morel mushrooms and wild asparagus were nicely cooked and presented, but the dish was cold. I did not complain because I knew they were busy with a wedding that was going on and it took forever for this dish to come out, but seriously? Okanagan Summer Cake: nice and light and not too sweet for the olive oil pound cake and the whipped mascarpone. Strawberry Crème Brûlée: this tasted exactly like store bought strawberry yogurt! Their complementary bread was excellent -- it was freshly baked and the outer crust was light and crispy. Their complementary deep-fried ball tasted like a pakora. Their pakora was probably the tastiest savoury dish for this meal, and it was actually served hot. read more

Hart House is located in Deer Lake and there is free parking. The restaurant is a heritage style house with old fashion furniture and decor. I found the food from average to pretty good: Ling cod fish and chips. A little too salty and too much batter on the fish. Salad with goat cheese and beets. The salad was refreshing and the goat cheese was plentiful. I felt like it needed a bit more beets though. The service was excellent and deserves a 5/5. Amuse bouche - Pickle (I would not consider pickle as bite-sized hors d'œuvre and mouth amser) Autumn vegetable terrine with stilton cream - Just a potato and carrot terrine (All season veggie items) which tasteless. Truffled mushroom cannelloni with sherry espuma - I spooned out truffled mushroom coz cannelloni was so dry and chewy. Smoked sablefish - It served in lukewarm temperature of sablefish. It's still smooth and tasty. Braised pork cheek and seared diver scallop - We got finally something taste good. Braised pork cheek the delicate softness of the cheek and really brought out the flavour! The scallop was delicious. Panna cotta with port-poached pear and macaroon - Panna cotta was in light flavor and silky smooth texture. The macaroon wasn't crunchy and too sweet. We have been loyal customers of the Hart House for the past decade. It is a great place to celebrate any special occasions. They never disappoint with their wonderful food, excellent service and beautiful location. The restaurant is a heritage house built in 1906 and is located right by the scenic Deer Lake in Burnaby. In the summer, they often have weddings outside on the lawn which have the view of the lake and the historical house. Inside, the restaurant has two main spacious dining rooms looking out either to the lake or the beautiful front yard. It's an unbeatable experience to have lunch in the main room while looking out at the peaceful view of the lake during a summer day. We also enjoy having romantic dinners there when they lit up the huge fire place at the lobby. During Dine Out Vancouver 2016, we had the Chicken Liver Parfait which is made from Fraser Valley chicken liver and truffle. The rich flavour of the truffle paired well with the anchovy salsa. For entree, we had the Surf and Turf which is braised veal cheek with seared scallops. Both are cooked perfectly. When we asked the Manager she said we didn't have any choice because we were 5. It was too cold and getting uncomfortable. We asked again and they transferred us. I guess we did have a choice. They should not let any one use the tent if it's freezing and customers need not ask twice. Their food was great though especially their Duck Flatbread and their Truffle Fries. It's a large house that's been turned into a restaurant. It is very well kept for it's age. The food was great. They had a "Date Night" menu which was a 3 course meal at $52 each, and we went with that. To start we had each of the appy. The poached pear salad was smaller than I thought. The pears were delicious but other than that there wasn't much to it. Hazelnut was crushed and mixed in the labneh which I didn't feel mixed well...perhaps some Brie cheese would've been a better option. The lamb terrine wrapped in pancetta was not my cup of tea. Main was delicious and a very large portion. But the dessert did not meet my expectations. The cakes were quite dry and felt like a ready made super market cake. The cocktail list was alright.
