But we sat at our table for over 10 minutes before being greeted by our waitress then she almost didn't allow my boyfriend to order a glass of wine due to his out of state license. We were slightly annoyed with the tight order of our drinks/food coming out as we had no time to finish the first plate before the next came out. In addition, our drinks came out after the appetizer which defeats the purpose of an aperol spritz, and (we're 26) but I felt like a high schooler the way our waitress talked to/ignored us. Even as someone who doesn't like general American restaurants, this place is great. Pretty much every dish my group tried was bursting with flavor, perfectly executed, and absolutely voluminous. Pass. Our waiter was confused about how waitering works. we ordered our drinks, he asked 'anything else?' and it was all downhill from there. He was flummoxed by our meal order, zero energy. The starters came in a timely fashion and the duck confit was a hit, the French Onion and mushroom was eh. And then we waited, and waited at least 40 minutes for our mains. No one checked in. When the food was dumped on our table by a runner, we had to ask the runner and waiter several times for silverware, and he asked, 'what type of knife do you want ?' The halibut was inedible, overcooked, probably under the heat lamp for a while and the garnishes seemed like they belonged to another dish . The broth for the sea scallops so salty it overwhelmed the dish We had ordered a side of Brussels sprouts, nope, several requests and the waiter just looking confused. I have been going to Harvest since 1989. It has had good, even truly excellent phases, and it has had just average phases. We've had many great times there, including our child's Harvard graduation dinner. It was great in the teens, especially mid-teens. Now it's below average. I have eaten dinner there 7 times since November. I had the Rib-Eye Steak six times, and both the size and especially the cook have gone downhill in that time. The last time, it was well past medium rare, which is unforgivable, and the size was smaller, too. The selection of appetizers is not exciting, though I understand from dinner companions that the oysters are good. The shrimp cocktail is a large portion, six very good-size shrimp when I had it, but alas, almost entirely free of flavor and overcooked. Someone doesn't know how to boil/steam shrimp, which is pretty shocking; it's not rocket science. My most recent visit a few days ago was especially disappointing. Because the steak had been so poor, I ordered the lamb chops instead, a la carte from the tasting menu. The two double chops -- a substantial portion -- were significantly different thicknesses, so the 'medium rare' large one was actually undercooked in the middle and the 'medium rare' small one was slightly overcooked. As an appetizer I had the duck confit agnolotti, agnolotti being one of my favorite dishes. This was a tiny portion for what they called a middle dish, between appetizer and main: 4 agnolotti. And not only were they terrible -- one couldn't taste the filling at all, which a companion confirmed -- but they were served with so many different ingredients underneath and on top that one really had virtually no idea what one was eating (from the menu: wild ramp pesto, frisée, parsnip purée, pickled ramps, breadcrumbs, none of which has any place on a proper dish of agnolotti). I almost never eat dessert, but everyone else was, so I decided to try the tiramisu, another disaster. Presented in a fun way, as a giant coffee bean. But the top 2/3 or more were just an extremely thick cream, no coffee flavor, in a chocolate shell, and the bottom third was completely dry. It was actually disgusting. The quality of cocktails has suffered as well -- by the time i got mine, a shaken cocktail, the ingredients were already separating. The wine list remains very good, the mark-ups of the ones I considered about 100% or a little more, which is not outrageous these days. Dinner per person with appetizer (c. 25), main (c. 45), dessert (18), a cocktail (18) and one's half-a-bottle share of a slightly modest wine (50 for the half) is about $155, plus 6.25% tax, plus 18% tip = $192. (actually, that's not counting sides -- $14 for french fries -- and the quite expensive Saratoga water.) That's a huge amount of money for what is now, alas, mediocre food. Half that, of course, if you don't drink anything but water. Still, a lot of money for a mediocre dinner. Service is friendly and good, depending on whom you get. Some servers don't understand the most basic things, such as not removing plates of those who have finished eating while others at the table are still eating. It's rude, disturbing, and very low-class. Except for the steak knives, the flatware is of rather poor quality. The tables are so close together that servers have to squeeze between tables in order to get to everyone at your table. Four stars for the wine list, three stars for service, two stars for the food, given what one has reason to expect, and the food rating is the weightiest. In sum, I'll be staying away from Harvest for a year or two or three and suggest you do the same. read more

There is street parking on both Brattle Street as well as Mt Auburn Street They have an outdoor patio for dining but even with reservations, we still had to eat inside. I had the Gazpacho and the scallop ratatouille. Both were something only found in an upscale restaurant. The kitchen was a little slow but well worth the wait. read more

The restaurant is tucked away in the middle of a large concrete building on the street level. The restaurant cannot be seen from the street but you will find a fold up sign so you know you are going in the right direction. When you walk inside the concrete structure, anthropology should be on your right. Surprisingly they had a patio seating with space heaters. We elected to sit inside because it was freezing out but the area looked really nice, you could tell some folks were cold because they were still bundled up. We sat in the back area, which takes you through part of the kitchen. It was nice to have an open kitchen but you have to walk thru the area where the servers are picking up the food which felt a little chaotic. The food overall was good but nothing amazing for 125 per person wine pairing (dinner only was 85pp) for the nye prefix menu. We started with the crab stuffed devil eggs which were pretty good. I can always go for a good deviled egg. The appetizer I chose was the oysters Rockefeller and wifey got the potato soup with caviar. The oysters Rockefeller was okay, I really like Abe and Louie's oysters Rockefeller where the spinach, and bread crumbs are melted and combined with the oyster where this one felt like they were just separated components in one dish. The soup was tasty though, the caviar didn't really add anything to the dish. Wifey got the scallops (the best dish) and I got the filet mignonette and escargot. The scallops were seared well and was very well presented. It was the best dish of the night. My filet was cooked to a perfect medium rare but it was not seared so the texture wasn't the most pleasant. The escargot was deshelled and didn't have much texture to it. The mashed potatoes were very creamy and delicious. For dessert, wifey got a pomegranate sorbet (very good) and I got the chocolate cake. The chocolate cake was very heavy and rich, it came with a coffee ice cream. It was good but too heavy for me. If I had a do over, I would've ordered wifey's dishes. read more

I've heard good things about Harvest but unfortunately my experience wasn't great. Our service was pretty slow for the most part and at one point our server switched roles and started bartending and we were left unattended for a good 25 minutes until we flagged someone down and got a new server. I ordered the harvest burger (with an impossible patty) at lunchtime. The patty was so over-cooked and dry and they forgot to put the mustard aioli on it so that made the burger that much more dry to eat. Since our server got held up elsewhere and we were in a quieter part of the restaurant, I didn't have a chance to ask for the mustard so I ended up needing to just add some of the ketchup that came with my side of fries. The fries were good, nice and crispy, but I was pretty let down by the burger. Others in my group enjoyed their food but another person that got the impossible burger has the same issue as mine. The beef is tender, and the fries are crunchy. No doubt, this time was still perfect. Btw, the server, Alex, is impressed me. He likes his job and hard work. He brought joy to the customers. Hidden in an unassuming part of Harvard Square, you'll find an upscale restaurant with fresh foods at a premium price. The interior of the restaurant is so inviting, where the inside and outside blend together with their beautiful outdoor patio (weather permitting). The Bluefin Tuna appetizer served in lettuce wraps was really delicious-- the fish was fresh and each bite had a spicy zing! The Beet Root Salad was good, pretty standard. And I found the Cheese Plate to be a little lackluster. For the entrées, the Day Boat Scallops were a daydream! The scallops were seared to perfection. I only wish there were more than 3 scallops to eat in the dish. It was paired with some potatoes and leafy greens to round out the meal. I had a bite of the Duck Bacon Campanelli which tasted surprisingly very light and fresh, with a slight tang. For sides, the Hand Cut French Fries were tasty but over salted. Likewise, the mushrooms and Brussels sprouts were standard but nothing to write home about. For dessert, I really enjoyed the trio of housemade sorbets (mango, strawberry, apricot) which ended the meal on a refreshing note. If you like a drink on the fruitier side, you might like the Spiced Pineapple Cobbler. All in all, I enjoyed an excellent meal here! This place was so difficult to find because it's kind of tucked away in a little alleyway. But once I finally figured it out and got there, I was pleasantly surprised by the super cute patio they had in the back. It was a gorgeous day out, so perfect for outdoor seating. Even though it was super warm and sunny, the awning they had did a good job providing a lot of shade so you didn't have to worry about getting burnt! My friend and I came here on a Friday afternoon hoping to have brunch but they only serve brunch on the weekends. The regular menu is quite small and a little on the pricey side. We were both feeling a burger so we got the Harvest burger. It was a really good burger that I enjoyed; nothing crazy or special, but it definitely filled me up. I would recommend. For a drink I tried the Harvest Sangria which was so delightful and refreshing especially on a warm day. As for service it was just alright. But overall I did enjoy this place and would definitely come back for the cute atmosphere of the patio. Would love to try the brunch. read more

Three stars based on their prix fix Thanksgiving dinner. TLDR: Food was mostly good, but our service was a bit sub-par. We were greeted and seated promptly for our 5:45 reservation and they even asked if we wanted to be seated indoors or on the heated patio. After waiting some time passed, our waiter rushed over, apologized for the wait and asked if we were ready to order - no introductions or information. Given the prix fix menu we assumed this was normal so we went ahead with our full orders. The appetizers came out, but we were told the bar was still making the cocktail that was ordered. I got the potato soup, the portion was on the small side but it was very tasty. My fiancé got the oysters and was very pleased. However, the cocktail didn't come out until after we were done with our appetizers and it was ok, but very tart so we watered it down. I ordered the turkey dinner entree, which was supposed to have roasted brussel sprouts, but came out with plain, steamed broccoli. I noticed another table was served cornbread, but we weren't. When the waiter came by to check in I asked for more gravy and right as he went to rush off again I asked about it so they eventually brought two small pieces of corn bread over. The dinner was fine, but not overly exciting. The broccoli was bland, the cheese mashed potatoes mostly just tasted like potatoes (but still good). The stuffing was supposed to be bacon and pear brioche, it was a little on the dry side and my serving had 1 small nugget of bacon and no pear. My fiancé ordered the salmon. The fish itself was very good, as were the onion and golden beets. It was served skin-up, so just keep that in mind. For dessert we got the chocolate pecan tart, the shell seemed slightly over cooked, but otherwise good with a nice presentation. We also ordered the pumpkin toffee crumb cake, which was very confusing. It was essentially a small cupcake sized piece of pumpkin bread, doused in toffee sauce but we couldn't find the crumb. Had we realized, we would have ordered it without the toffee sauce because it was so insanely sweet, we basically dug out the middle. Another table was eventually seated next to us and besides introducing herself, the waitress took them through the menu, mentioned the mysterious cornbread and some other ordering options that we couldn't quite hear. Later I asked about the broccoli situation and found out they ran out....this was shortly after 6pm. It was a nice night, but given the cost of $85/person + tip/tax, it fell a bit short of our expectations. read more

My best friend and I went for dinner here during Dine Out Boston. We're pretty close, so we shared most of our dishes and were able to try out the entire Dine Out menu. First, we had appetizers. The watermelon panzanella was plated beautifully! It was quite refreshing for a warm summer night. As per the gazpacho, the berry flavor is definitely stronger than the tomato flavor. It was also very summery, served cold. The main courses were up next. My friend had the Bay of Fundy salmon, while I had the marinated pork loins. If you had to choose between the two, go for the salmon. The pork was quite boring. The salmon, by contrast, had a beautifully crispy skin, and a good amount of flavor. Still, both dishes were plated nicely, but the salmon was definitely the star. Finally, we had the desserts. I had the watermelon mint sorbet, while my friend had the blueberry crumb cake. The sorbet was very sugary, to the point that it felt almost artificial. The added sugar took away from the natural watermelon, which I feel should've been the star. The blueberry crumb cake was more bready than I'd expected, but it came with lavender ice cream, which helped to balance that out and add some moisture. There was a lot of blueberry going on, with fresh blueberries outside too. That felt slightly redundant. On the food alone, I'd give this place a 4/5, but holistically, this place was more of a 3. There were so many flies in the restaurant! It was quite distracting during dinner, and you had to be wary of flies getting near your food. I didn't want any unexpected protein in my meal. Dine Out was a good opportunity to try this restaurant out, but I think I'd only come back for a second shot at that salmon (and maybe in the winter when the flies have hopefully died out). read more

Harvest delivers on all the hype and accolades it has received through the years of being open. As a cornerstone restaurant in Harvard Square which experiences significant turnover that speaks to the consistency and longevity of the dishes that come out of the kitchen and service from the bar/staff on a nightly/daily basis. I met my wife in Harvard Square for dinner after work and after researching some of the establishments we settled on Harvest. One of the nice things when we walked in is that we were presented with the new menu (changes seasonally) which is nice to know as some places have a somewhat limited menu that never changes. We ordered some wine as it had been a long week and the prices were very reasonable for the Italian and French whites we selected. They have a pretty large list of by-the-glass, bottles, and have every kind of variety you would want (unless you have extremely particular and rare tastes). The servers are fantastic and attentive. This could be expected due to the ambiance and decor of the restaurant which is chic, yet upscale. However, in a lot of "fancy" places they claim that slow service is due to pacing and intentional to which I call BS on that... I've worked in the industry and that's no excuse for a server not checking back periodically. However, that was not the case here and we got frequent updates, extra bread (which was delicious) and buttercream, refills, and free smiles (always welcome). The food is as gorgeous as it is delicious. The chef and team have created whimsical takes on dishes you are familiar with (see my photo of "coconut creme pie") while introducing various techniques that may seem out of place in the traditional preparations. From a selection perspective, there are plenty of choices for all dietary needs and no longer are those with allergies or self-imposed restrictions limited to "the sad, single dish" at the bottom of the menu that is devoid of flavor and satisfaction. The prices are reflective of the portions as well, as you should not leave here hungry unless you consciously order in such a way (i.e. - happy hour appetizers, etc.). Harvest was exactly what many critics and people have said in reviews I've read over the past 6 months. It's refreshing to see such consistency and dedication to ensuring their craft is near flawless yet accessible to the average person. Workers wear masks and they have a hand sanitizer at the entrance. There are plexiglass dividing indoor tables and they have outdoor patio seating as well. The savory eclair has a nice balance of salty and sweet. The harvest burger is massive and filling. It is also juicy and that mustard aioli is great for the burger as well as the fries. It wasn't too loud, though we did go on a Sunday night. We got the squash bisque, winter salad, squash and sausage risotto, the duck breast, key lime cheesecake and the chocolate verrine. The squash bisque was so rich and delicious, the winter salad wasn't too special but paired nicely with the creamy soup. The duck itself was tender and cooked to perfection but could have used more purée and sauce. The risotto was good but a little heavy. The deserts were super flavorful and a great ending to the meal! Love this place! I've been here a few times and the food is always great. I never order chicken at a restaurant but the chicken dish here is delicious. The menu changes seasonally but the chicken has been on the menu every time I've been there. Love the cheese plates and the salads always have nice in-season ingredients. Thoroughly disappointed! Gone are the days of quality dining at the Harvest. This institution solely relies on its reputation from yesteryear. The fried blossoms were supposed to be a delicate dish...instead it turned into a fried disaster. The ribeye steak was nothing to write home about. The cod with beurre blanc sauce had no flavor (hard to believe you can mess up this quintessential sauce). Finally, the lobster with raviolis were swimming in a flavorless sweet cream sauce that didn't match the dish at all. Only highlight of the meal was the service, the classy interior, and the open fire on a cold winter night. In summary, you're better off at any other culinary destination in the Square. read more
