This place deserves it good reviews. The chicken definitely lives up to expectation. It was wonderfully crispy and well spiced on the outside, and juicy and tender on the inside. It comes with fried shallots, a delicious sweet-spicy sauce, and sticky rice. We also got a roti on the side, nothing particularly specially but it was as crispy and delicious as expected. The Muu Hong was also delicious. Nicely braised pork belly and shoulder, super tender and flavorful. It was very similar to Hong shao rou (Chinese red braised pork). We love Hat Yai and always make sure to stop by when in town and have been doing so years. I've never tried anything but the fried chicken, curry and rice because I can't pass it up when I get the chance. When visiting with friends that have ordered other dishes they always seem to enjoy the various options. Unfortunately I can't leave a glowing 5 star review due to service. It is hit or miss and our last visit left a bad taste. Generally a 20% tipper myself, the company I was with payed and the cashier was unhappy with the tip and COMMENTED on it. This is an order at the counter, get your own utensils, water etc. establishment. Tipping culture is out of control here if you think you are owed a specific tip for punching in the order. As a food service industry vet (10+ years) I have never commented on a tip left other than expressing gratitude. If you believe you are owed more for your service, talk to your employer instead of shaming customers. read more

This is unique. The fried chicken has warming spices, crunch, and juice center. It is served with a...gravy, which is teeming with cinnamon. The bread with it is soft and warm . Oh my gosh the chicken here is so so good. I love that it's gluten free as well. They use free range chicken and they fry it without any breading, just delicious seasonings! The interior is sweet and juicy. We have seen this restaurant (other location) before on a previous trip to Portland but never went. So glad we stopped by here! We were going to stop by a food truck place after so we had to eat a light meal: we each ordered a 2 wing set. It came with sticky rice, 2 wings, the sweet chili sauce and the chicken is sprinkled with fried shallots. So simple yet so delicious. This smaller meal was actually really filling for me mostly because of the sticky rice (carb lol)... they give a big portion of it. The chicken wings were a good size too with lots of meat on the wing. I enjoyed chewing on the bones especially the tips of the wings that was really crunchy! (True Asian lol) the way they fried it made the skin really crunchy and fun to chew on too. The chicken went great with the chili sauce, sticky rice and shallots. They have options for coconut milk or condensed milk to accommodate dairy free. Though it's a spot to order and seat yourself, the server asked how everything was and helped clear plates while we were working on other things. Everyone was so friendly. And the interior was clean and has plants all along the walls. Overall it was a nice place and the service was awesome. I suppose I might come back and try something else. I really wanted to go to this place because of how great the reviews were. I was not disappointed! There is only street parking but it was easy to find. You order in the front and they bring the food out to you. While we waited for our food, we were commenting on the plants that decorated the resultant, we enjoyed that. We ordered turmeric curry, fried wings, southern Thai ground pork, and some roti. I wish we got some more roti because with the curry sauce it is delicious! The food was hot coming out from the kitchen, so you know they cooked it for each table. I loved the wings, next time we are getting more. I love that they gave us good portions of rice to share. It was heavily fish sauce flavored. The lime helped balance it out. The little chili flakes are very spicy fyi. The mango was an amazing addition. I wish all pad thai had mango. I don't think I would order it again. Parking was a bit hard to find but my friend and I got spots pretty close and parking was free. The inside was very cute and there was lots of seating. We sat and talked for about half an hour. The staff was nice and brought us boxes after a while which was very kind of them since it's self service for that stuff.
