If you want to try delicious Southern Thai cuisine, this is definitely the spot! Southern Thai food is known for their fried chicken and so we were looking forward to it here and they did not disappoint. My partner had the Hat Yai fried chicken set and I had the Roasted Duck Curry from the special menu. The Hat Yai fried chicken had crispy skin and juicy meat on the inside. It included roti and curry which was tasty as well. The roasted duck curry was amazing and was the kind of spicy that left a kick in my mouth but nothing I couldn't handle. We also had their Hat Yai iced coffee, Thai tea, and non-alcoholic coconut mango horchata. The iced coffee was quite delicious with a unique taste. The Thai tea was great and slightly creamy. The coconut mango horchata was a highlight as it was creamy with amazing flavor from the mango and coconut. It was also very cute inside with nice decor and filled with greenery. I really wanted to like this place given all the raving reviews but we must have come on an off evening. We stopped by for dinner last night and the roti was definitely old because it tasted stale and hard as if they refried an older batch. We also ordered the pad Thai and it was honestly the worst pad Thai I've had in a while- so salty and we only took a couple of bites before foregoing the whole dish. The fried chicken itself was fine though the white meat pieces were a lot dryer than the dark meat pieces. Seeing my Pad Thai was like looking at another galaxy. I never seen the rice noodles bundled in an omelet, with the other ingredients (green mnago, cihves, peanuts & crunchy pork rinds). Admittedly, I also asked twice for "no bean sprouts" to the cashier (who wrote it down clearly), but sprouts still ended up in my noodles (perhaps it was the cook's error). At least though, the bean sprouts tasted tolerably with flavorful rice noodles. I also appreciate Hat Yai for its outdoor seating and cool ventilation indoors. While we sat indoor, the entrance door was open for ventilation. Being that we're still in a Covid-19 pandemic in this fall 2024, the air quality safety was appreciated, so I felt safe removing my respirator to dine. read more

My friend and I originally went to the Belmont location but they were only taking cash that day. Our hearts were set on eating here so we drove to Killingsworth and to our horror, they told us the square ap was malfunctioning for many restaurants. They were gracious enough to just write down our card numbers to charge later. I was so glad they trusted their customers to pay up because neither my friend or I had our debit cards or enough cash for a meal. Decor and ambience were pretty basic. Tables were covered with classic striped tablecloths. They were surrounded by standard wood seats or aluminum folding chairs. All the server-ware was self serve at the center of each table. You chose your eating area after ordering. Starting with the fried chicken, it was very moist and well coated. The fish sauce was not overpowering when being poured over the chicken. Sticky rice was a great consistency. The mayalu curry was super flavorful and rich. Unique compared to typical curries. The roti was well oiled and perfectly fried. They were pipping hot. I could have eaten a dozen of those! The ground pork was rich and slightly salty. It is definitely hot and spicy so beware. I am a spice lord so I loved it, but my friend has reflux and the cumulative heat hit her pretty hard. The Pla Dtom Kha-Min Soup was less than to be desired. It did have a good amount of fish and vegetables. But it was so sour we could barely eat it. Luckily I just happened to have some monk fruit with me. I added a few drops and it helped balance it out. All the drinks were so delicious. The coconut mango horchata in particular tasted like fresh puréed mango smoothie. Prices we standard. For 2 adults and 2 kids, we had a full meal, drinks, and leftovers for about $75. Service was good. I visited Hat Yai for dinner recently and it was great! I love how there's a lot of unique drink and entree choices. It's located in SE Portland and there's street parking. One orders ar the counter and then, your food is brought to you. It's bus your own table which seems to be the trend during this Covid era. I got the coconut mango horchata without the rum. It was sweet and super refreshing! I got the braised chicken thigh roti set and it was delicious. The roti was crispy and so good dipped into the curry. The pickles on the side were a good touch. WOW. This food really smacks you in the face with flavor. Atmosphere: Pretty informal. You order your food at the cashier, but they bring it to you when it's ready and bus your table at the end. Actually, they bused our table throughout the meal as they brought more food over. Portions: They're small plates. Like tapas style, although probably not quite as small as tapas. But one plate per person probably won't be enough food. And if you're a pig like me, two plates won't even be enough! Nonalcoholic limeade soda: It was alright. Nothing special. (I'm gonna have to start using a different format, because there is a lot to say...) FRIED CHICKEN WINGS So... I'm the type of person who gets grossed out by "weird meats". I like white meat, not dark meat. I usually don't eat chicken wings because the bones and ligaments gross me out. But these looked so good I just had to try them. And they were awesome! They're not the American south style wings that have a full inch of crunchy breadcrumbs for you to bite through. These are different. The layer of crunch is thinner. But it's still really good. It had some sort of flavorful coating that I couldn't put my finger on. Some sweetness. Some savoriness. Some pops of spices that weren't too finely ground up, which was fun. The meat in the chicken was good. There were some ligament-looking-things that grossed me out, but it was deeper in there and I was ok eating more at the surface. It also came with sticky rice, which has gotta be one of my favorite things in the world. Never fails to put a smile on my face. And there was this dipping sauce that might have been my favorite part of the meal. Wow! It was sweet... spicy... garlicy... chicken... I don't even know. But it was amazing. If everything else about this meal sucked I would still go back for sticky rice and that sauce. NEAU PAD YI-RAH I assume you aren't familiar with what those words mean, so here's what the menu says: "Stir-fried flank steak in red curry paste, cumin, yellow onion and ginger. Served with jasmine rice." The steak was pretty tender and good. It was fun getting flank stake in a curry. I don't think I've gotten that before. Like most things we got, the flavors were strong. In this dish, the cumin really came through to me. I felt like I was eating Indian food. If I were to nitpick, I'd say that the cumin was a little too strong and it could have been balanced by some sort of acid, or perhaps some veggies. PAD THAI I still can't quite decide if this was the best pad thai I've ever had. Or whether or not it's even a fair comparison. This pad thai was different. - It had tumeric, and that flavor came through. - It had little matchsticks of lemongrass, which gave it this super awesome pop of tartness to compliment the other flavors. - It had pork rinds, which felt like the perfect textural contrast and compliment. I feel like they functioned as a palate cleanser as well. - It was more saucy than is typical. - It had more of a fragerant flavor to it. - The flavor of the chives was a little different. I guess because they are "green mango chives", whatever that means! I think that for me, it's probably not the best I've ever had. I prefer the more dry style to the saucy style. I can't decide between Lotus of Siam, Arawan, or Archis, all in Vegas. That's just me nitpicking and musing on my personal preference though. Hat Yai's pad thai was still up there with the best I've ever had, and did a really great job with the flavor combinations, textural contrast and how it looks visually. DESERT ROTI I only got a picture of one of them, but my girlfriend couldn't decide and ordered three different flavors. Lol! Overall it was one of my favorite parts of the meal. The roti itself was had good texture. Nice chewiness with a very slight crisp on the outside. I wish it would have been warm though. And then the stuff they put on top of it, I don't even know what it was, but it was awesome. The first one was this brown dusting that tasted and looked like cinnamon, but it was probably some mixture adjacent native Thai spices that I've never heard of before. And it came with sweetened condensed milk. The second was like this white custard that was a little bit tart and was topped with these slivered crunchy things. Maybe mango? The third was this green custard that had some sort of flower infused into it. They were all just so good -- I'm glad my girlfriend got all three -- but the first was probably my favorite. Sweetened condensed milk is always awesome. SOUTHERN THAI GROUND PORK Did you hear "desert" and thought this meal was over? Shame on you! Jk. Even me being a pig, I couldn't do more than taste a spoonful of the ground pork when it came out. I love this place's food so much. This is easily the best "average-priced" meal I had in Portland when I was visiting. I may be a little biased because I love heavy-flavored curries and bread, but I genuinely think that this is the best "roti prata" I've had. I had been meaning to try Hat Yai for over a year and once I finally got around to it, I was so impressed that I came back a second time within a week. The signature Hat Yai was delicious with a very mild and slightly sweet curry sauce for dipping the chicken and bread. However, the other curry dishes I tried were where they really shined. The sauce on the special duck curry was packed with flavor and the right amount of heat. I kept dipping my bread in the sauce to try to extend the life of the dish as much as possible. On my second visit I tried the brisket curry and my only regret was that I didn't order 2 portions. It was even better than the duck somehow. Definitely don't sleep on the Thai tea or cocktails either. At this rate I won't be satisfied until I try the whole menu, so I'll definitely be back soon. This place was a fantastic Southern Thai street food spot. I ordered here after trying to find a Thai place closeby that would deliver abd this place did not disappoint. I got the Hat Yai Combo and the Phucket Hokkien Noodle just because I wanted to try a few different things. The noodles had a similar flavor to dan mein noodles you would get at a Chinese spot. That's not to say it wasn't good. The soft cooked egg was a nice distinguishing factor. I didn't love the raw onions but there wasn't a lot of them. There were a TON of asparagus which might turn some people off. I did like having a good serving of veggies so I didn't mind it. The combo was definitely the highlight and enough for one person. I read people talking about the chicken being dry or not having enough meat. First off, given it was delivered, I didn't think the chicken was overcooked and thought it was plenty tender. And I don't know what kind of chicken you're eating you expected more meat. It was normal sized chicken pieces. I love the crispy skin and the peppercorn flavor that had a hint of spice. The roti was well cooked and a nice vessel to dip into the curry. The curry had a slightly sweet, almost Indian curry type flavor but similar to a Khao soi type broth. I loved the pickles too with the green ones having a slight kick to it. The sticky rice was also nice to have to dip in the curry but I might substitute it for something else next time. The one thing that I definitely didn't use was their garlic sauce. Mostly sweet and not a ton of garlic flavor. All in all a great, home style meal to have. One more very untimely review--we were here months ago during a weeklong stay in Portland--but Hat Yai made for a very nice casual dinner on our last evening in town. Recognizing that Portland is a special town when it comes to Southeast Asian food and especially Thai food, we kind of agonized over where to have some Thai food. Not only are we basically ignorant of the regional specialties that many Portland Thai restaurants offer, but back in the fall when we were in the city, a number of the recommended Thai places were doing only takeout or operating on an abbreviated schedule, or both--from those standpoints, most of them out of range from where we were staying. Back in October, and maybe this is still the case, Hat Yai was strictly an outdoor dining experience, with the food served in take-out containers. That was kind of a bummer, but that was the reality on the ground for a ton of restaurants at the time. But what was in those boxes was delicious. We had the Hat Yai special for two, which I guess is their signature item: Half of a fried chicken, sticky rice, roti, and curry. I wouldn't say the fried chicken was the best I've ever had (not the juiciest), but it had a pleasing light crispy batter and some depth of flavor and paired great with the other items. A comfort-food experience of a sort we'd never had before, and that's always a plus. Interesting but limited list of cocktails. For me, the tamarind whiskey smash got that tropical cocktail thing across with some complexity and not being too sweet. read more

Went on a Thursday night and it was pretty busy but we were still able to snag a table. They seem to move things along pretty quickly. We ordered hat yai for 2 combo and the Chinese broccoli dish. The combo was great and we loved everything about it but the curry and rotti was a standout. The broccoli dish left something to be desired. It seemed undercooked and it was very firm which made it difficult to cut and to chew. We also ordered drinks and those came out later and after we had nearly finished our meal, so there is some room for improvement there. I got the roti and chicken to try. The chicken is crispy and comes with sweet and sour sauce. The roti was fluffy but got cold and hard due to the weather outside. The curry is good and full of flavor - it's creamy and coconutty. I did like their pandan gin and tonic! That was the highlight of my meal. My main issue was the seating. The staff seems to be told conflicting things. One said you had to waitlist and a staff member would seat you after you order. Another said it's first come first serve. read more

I've been there twice and both times a young gal behind the counter/prep area continuously eye efd my husband! When we ordered, when we got water and when we asked for to go boxes.
