Best Sandwich Shop in Hickory...maybe the whole world!!! The use of locally sourced, fresh ingredients, plus some really interesting combinations, make this shop one of a kind. My favorite sandwiches are Pork Belly BLT and the Turkey Bacon Avocado. Both are Ree-Donk-u-Lus. It costs a couple of bucks extra, but I always go for one of the Veggies of the Day (standard side is a bag of chips). My last visit was Broccoli with Miso. Unusual sounding, but it was epic. I think it was a perfect addition to Hickory and they have earned their superior reputation, as you can see with other reviews that people travel just to get a sandwich here. Parking is iffy but nothing too far off that you will be hiking the Hickory hills. The inside is smaller but you are able to grab a table and eat. The sides are amazing. This is the little sandwich shop that could, creating huge flavors with fresh, seasonal ingredients and an inspired menu that manages to be both familiar and bold. Little more than a deli style counter/kitchen with a few table tops and a cooler for drinks, Hatch is tucked into downtown Hickory and looks utterly unassuming from the outside. Luckily, its bursting at the seams with ambition and daring across its menu. A step inside begets a greeting from most of the staff and ushers you right to the register where you both order and pay- no table side service here, though orders are brought to your table. A quick look at the menu shows that, while the sandwich rules the day, things are a bit different, but in a good way. For example, there's a chicken salad sub, only its served with feta, cilantro, bacon, and avocado. Or how about a turkey sandwich, only is stuffed with cranberry, tillamook cheddar, bacon and (wait for it) sweet potato? Who needs Thanksgiving anyway? Of course, the most popular sandwich gets its own mention: foodies love the banh mi for its fusion of French and Vietnamese cuisines- hot baguette standardly served with sliced pork, mayo with fish sauce, carrots, cilantro, and jalapeño. Only Hatch adds a southern twist to this standard- pulled pork that is savory and juicy in its own right. Szechuan sauce subs in for the jalapeño to add heat and the carrot shreds are lightly pickled. While I do miss the earthy heat of the jalapeño, I am in love with the way the pulled pork juices almost melt the inside of the lightly toasted bread and highlight the cilantro's herby flavor. This is one serious sandwich, not so much in terms of size, but for the overall flavors that just work together. Sandwich rolls are about the size of a standard small sub and come fresh from Nova's bakery in Charlotte. A daily special sandwich changes based on what's in season and locally available. With summertime in full swing, tomatoes and mint are prevalent at the time of this review. Vegetarians will have plenty of pleasing options to choose from. Clearly there is attention to detail here not often found at your standard sub shop and it shows on every sandwich offered. Hatch has taken it to a higher level. But I would her remiss if I didn't mention the sides. While sandwiches standardly come with a small big of plain potato chips, there are other options. Most notably are the brussel sprouts served with a maple glaze. Simply put- they are worth the trip alone. Fresh brussel sprouts are halved and then oven roasted in a maple glaze spiked with the heat of chili pepper flakes. They come out piping hot, perfectly caramelized outside and fork tender throughout. Every bite is a combination of sweet heat and the natural spice of the brussel sprout- they are ridiculously good. Other side options include mac n' cheese or broccoli in miso. My only complaint? These sides set you back $2.50 a piece. In most cases, that's a third to nearly half the cost of another sandwich. I appreciate the quality here, but the price is just a bit out of proportion- especially when that sends a standard lunch tab over $10. Kudos for the beer and wine offerings, though I don't think much is sold at lunch. Certainly the hipster vibe is present with PBR offered in the can, along with a small handful of microbrews, but the daytime crowd is primarily the working man and woman from the adjacent buildings- plenty of khakis and loafers if you get my drift. Still, for Hickory this is an impressive showing that would strike a chord in most larger cities. Great menu that goes beyond the ordinary and skillfully finds flavors that make the meal more than just the sum of its parts. Hatch has emerged and quickly climbed to the top of my short list when stopping in town. read more

I got the turkey, bacon, and avocado sandwich, the the wild rice soup as the side. and this cost me $11, which I think it's kinda high for a sandwich. I waited 15 minutes for my order, and I have to wait another 5 minutes extra because they put it on a plate when I asked it for to go. The bread is like a french bread bun, and I can barely taste the turkey because it's cover with avocado. The soup is good and creamy, but a bit salty to my liking. I guess if you are a vegetarian, you should try this place out, but I don't think I will go out of my way for it. read more

This is a great place to grab a quick lunch. This is a great place for a pulled pork lover. They have a very large variety of pulled pork sandwiches ranging from your typical pulled pork to more a more eccentric pulled pork grilled cheese. The last time I went I ordered a "Pulled Pork Banh Mi." To be honest, the wicked name was the main reason why I ordered it but it turned out to be delicious. This odd sandwich had a BUNCH of shredded pickled carrots which added a really refreshing taste. if there weren't so many other pulled pork choices, I would not mind sticking with this specific sandwich for months and months. This place is not as cheap as Subway's $5 footlong but the quality sandwich is absolutely worth it. The only downside of this place is their limited seating. You seat yourself and there should not be any trouble seating just yourself but a group of 4+ may have to wait. NLT (neat little tip) You can substitute your chips for a salad for a dolla. The salad is a simple bowl of greens with vinaigrette dressing. This is the first vinaigrette I have ever tasted that was too sour for me. Not for me, but you may appreciate it.
