One of my favorite sandwich places to eat. I decided to check this place out the other week but it's not the same during the pandemic. The inside is already very small but they were only allowing outdoor seating, you can only go inside to order or use the bathroom. But there are barely any outdoor seating for their customers but luckily I was able to snag a table after I ordered. I ordered the pulled pork banh mi sandwich with a side of broccoli and it was delicious! Will be back again soon. read more

I just cannot get past ordering the Pulled Pork Banh Mi sandwich! I love biting into the fresh julienned carrots and luscious stems of fresh cilantro. I add some extra Sriracha sauce, 'cause I like it hot. On a day of indulgence, their Mac N Cheese is some of the best around, but if you wish to stay healthier, they have a nice mixed greens salad or tomato, balsamic, feta salad, as alternate sides. If you want to K.I.S.S. they offer a bag of chips with the sandwich, to keep it on the cheap. read more

Was coming down for monthly eye visits from Sugar Mountain and found this gem. I typically order anything with Pork Belly but I have tried their other menu items and they are all good. I sit outside (rain, cold, sun, etc) and enjoy. I always leave with a side order of miso broccoli and roasted cauliflower. read more

Also, pay the $3 upcharge for the maple roasted brussel sprouts, it's well worth it! Part hipster, part nuts and berries, but it manages to be good anyway. They have the standard sandwich shop menu, but step it up a notch with the daily specials. Hatch was phenomenal. If you're passing through Hickory, NC, make sure to stop here. The atmosphere is chill, the people are very friendly, and the food was delicious. The menu is pretty expansive, so there's something for everyone. Everything was really fresh. My friend and I split the Veggie Bahn Mi and two sides- the mac and cheese and tomatoes with balsamic and feta. The sandwich was really tasty- broccoli, roasted brussels sprouts, and carrots made up the heart of the sandwich, with srirarcha and mayo adding a lot of flavor. The two sides were great. This place belongs in Ann Arbor, MI. Creative sandwiches, good service, and easy going. Best lunch in the area of Hickory. Had the turkey bacon avocado sandwich, comes with chips. Good Sammy, brought it out to me, no clean up. What's not to like? Just wish it was a bit bigger and happy hour when I went there but alas can't win em all! Probably ordered and ate in 20 minutes on my way to visit a plant. A little out of the way but again good reviews and good food will do that to you. Not much else to do in Hickory from where this place is in "downtown". It's an old town and this place is a little out of place but pretty busy and turnover is quick. Probably the best sandwiches I've had in a very long time and my new favorite restaurant in hickory! All food is made right when you order, so it's super fresh. The sandwiches are generally twists on the classics. I had the veggie reuben...Brussel sprouts, peanuts, kraut, Russian dressing, and fontina cheese...awesome! After stopping at Josh's only to see it wasn't open, we decided to try Hatch. Upon walking in, I immediately was hit with an atmosphere that could remind one of home. Wooden tables, bookshelves bursting with books, and the smell of sandwiches wafting around. I got a pork belly sandwich, my dad got the club. My pork belly tasted delicious, but it was a little fatty for me (but that's what you get with pork belly so I'm to blame). My dad's club was very good but maybe a little too much NaCl (salt ;) ) on it for me. The staff was courteous and made the atmosphere very homely. If I ever am in Hickory again, I'd definitely stop by Hatch. read more

For those of you who have lived either in space or on Earth with a bag over your head and ear plugs for the past 20 years, Guy hosts several shows on Food Network. One of those shows is "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives". This show explores (or used to) the lesser known food joints across this great country. My version of this show is "Cafes, Kitchens, and Country Cookin". This is the first installment. I am here in the tiny southern town of Hickory, NC. You may recognize them for their great furniture industry, but do you know they used to be a bastion for sock making? True story. Now this sleepy town is known for, well, not much. Today I am visiting Hatch Sandwich Bar, located in the quaint and historic downtown area of Hickory. After I dig in here, I can check out a really old movie at the Carolina Theatre for $1! I wonder if they have Top Gun? I walk in and step up to the counter. The lady greets me with a firm hello and asks me what I want. I choose the Pork Grilled Cheese. It comes with cilantro, avocado, and mixed cheeses, also with a bag of chips. It arrives to my street view counter quickly, so I dig right in. This thing is pretty big! The bread is perfectly toasted with creamy butter. The cheese is over flowing the sandwich, making this one hard to fit in my mouth. But who am I kidding? I've got the biggest mouth in Hollyweird! The pork is cooked perfectly and is heavily ensconced in a ton of cheese. The cheese sticks to my hands and face and even makes its way up to my bleach blonde hair. Anyone have a comb? This sandwich is OOB: Out of bounds. On point. To the sky. Rockin and Rollin. Straight cash homey. Do yourself a favor and get to Hickory and check out Hatch. Another great sandwich from Hatch. Recently flew solo and tried the Turkey Bacon Avocado. The roll from Nova, fresh baked that morning. The bacon, perfect and crispy. I absolutely love Hatch! I work a few blocks away, and it takes everything in me to not visit Hatch daily to try all that they have to offer. I have yet to try something that isn't fresh and delicious. Where else can you order a side salad and expect a mixture of romaine and greens with glazed pecans, goat cheese and apple slivers?! Nothing is half-assed here. I am usually lamenting how bad service in Hickory is, but not at Hatch: the service is impeccable. Not much I'm going to be able to add to a place that's averaging 4 1/2 stars after 115 reviews! So I'm simply going to solidify their rating by saying I conquer! Hatch is a simple sandwich shop that is no frills, cute and homey, and serving up sandwiches that agree with everyone! So many sandwiches looked good to me, but ultimately I settled on a pulled pork plate. I did so mainly because it came with two sides for which I hear is a specialty here! At first sight, the pulled pork plate looked light on the entree itself. However, we've grown accustom to thinking we should be loaded down with food when ordering, and yet I find when it's smaller in quantity I tend to eat slower! The pork was extremely lean, tender, nice flavor, and my benchmark for knowing a good Q....sauce on the side! You can't mask your pork ineptness if you're willing to put your sauce on the side! The Mac was a fabulous side, loaded with cheese, but mine came room temperature at best which was a bit disappointing. The Brussels were what everyone says they are, fantastic! Sautéed in maple, they're tender enough with a added sweetness that just works! They had a Blackened Cauliflower this afternoon that was simple, but it made one of the most bland vegetables really exciting! Tossed in something to give it some flavor, then apparently baked to the point of blackening the tips, this was fantastic! Lastly I had to try the tomatoes, cheese, and balsamic side item. Another winner that needs to be a regular side item feature. All said, Hatch is what I thought it was, a great sandwich shop that sometimes has sides that outshine the entrees! read more
