I tell you... I love finding the off the beaten path food spots! They are so often "America's Best!! Found the BBQ joint enroute to Possum Kingdom Lake and "Boy" am I super grateful for the pit stop! Upon walking in, you're automatically welcomed and feelin' cozy from the vintage country decor and set up. We got food to-go, although definitely going back for breakfast and to try more menu selections & drinks. We got two orders of Sliders (1xMulit-meats & 1xSausage), a Cheeseburger () & Chicken Tacos, which all were absolutely delish!!! This was our first time visiting Hatchet House, and it definitely won't be our last. The food was excellent, and the atmosphere was fun, relaxed, and welcoming. We started with the fried pickles, and they were some of the best I've ever had. They were perfectly crispy on the outside, flavorful, and a great way to kick off the meal. We ordered the sliced brisket plate with potato salad and coleslaw. The brisket was cooked perfectly, lean but still tender and juicy. Both sides tasted fresh and homemade. The coleslaw was especially memorable because it was more savory than sweet, with a subtle hint of cumin that gave it a unique flavor I really enjoyed. We also tried the loaded baked potato with brisket, the sliders, and the mac and cheese topped with burnt ends. Everything was very good. The only item that didn't quite hit the mark for me was the burnt ends, which were a little sweeter than I prefer. Even so, they were still flavorful. Overall, we had a great first experience. Between the outstanding fried pickles, quality barbecue, welcoming atmosphere, and variety on the menu, Hatchet House is a place we'll definitely be coming back to. read more

I have tried this place twice as it's close to our family lake-house where we vacation at often. We had it once in restaurant and once to go. I liked that you can order the togo online for pick up and it was ready quickly. We got the pulled pork, brisket, and burnt ends with Bbq sauce, Mac and cheese, fried okra, and rolls. The meats were hot and fresh. They were all very good but the burnt ends were the favorite. The Mac and cheese is homemade and the okra was awesome. A great BBQ option here for sure! read more

The chicken was a little dry but had a good flavor. The sausage is fantastic. Both side items were very tasty. I would certainly come back and try some different items. Took my wife today (Mother's Day) for seafood as they now advertise to be a boil house. Ordered lobster tail & crab leg with baked potato. Seafood was old & over-cooked. "Melted butter" had no butter solids....just some kind of oil. I asked for real yellow butter but was told the resturant did not have ou use it. Very disappointing meal. read more

Update: they now have axe throwing at this location too! Went again tonight (this is only our second time ever) and yet again it was just kind of blah. Tonight was Cajun night and I was excited because the pictures they share on social media are amazing looking. Sadly mine looked nothing like the advertised picture. It was way over cooked and lacked flavor. Many things seems just a little burnt. For as expensive as the plates are there I just expected more. The food was horrible, chicken strips were not cooked all the way, asked for brisket and got pulled pork, and my ribs tested like charcoal. We sat for an HOUR before they came and told us they were out of burgers. The server was very nice though, but we did have to get up and refill our own drinks. And when we asked to speak to a manager a cook came out to talk to us and told us they could take $20 off only. But they really only took off 16. Safe to say I will NEVER go back. We walked in and they told us to seat ourselves but it's very hard to do that when every open table is full of dishes and dirty. So we went ahead and sat at a dirty table. They then took the dishes and didn't wipe it down. We then had to wait 15 minutes for a server to even look our way. We ordered appetizers, food, and drinks. We had to sit there and wait 40 minutes just for an appetizer even when the tables beside us who got their after us had already gotten everything they ordered. I do understand that it was busy when we first got there but after 15 minutes there was barely anyone there. So i really don't understand why the service would be so terrible. We had to get our food to go because it took so long. I ordered the brisket nachos and they gave me chips with brisket on top, nothing else. This place is ridiculous, I advise you to not waste your time. What kind of place gives someone nachos that only has chips with brisket throw on top. We had the burnt ends plate and a pulled pork sandwich with onion rings, smoked cream corn and baked beans...everything was great! The batter on the onion rings was truly special!! The service was superb! We were also traveling with a fur babies who received a treat they will not soon forget! Came here for the first time with my family and parents to celebrate Fathers Day and was highly disappointed in the overall experience. They greeted us and informed us that they were only accepting card as payment. They were out of many items including ribs. My husband ordered burnt end fries with all the toppings. When they were delivered to the table there was only 5-6 small pieces of meat scattered across the top, the cheese sauce was watery, and the fries weren't even a brown color and all the other toppings were missing. For $19 I let them know this wasn't acceptable especially since their own website depicts a photo with 3X the meat he was originally given. The waitress had them taken back where they added meat and jalapeño but the quality was no where near having to pay $19. Almost everyone's dish was missing some component and had to be asked for several times. When it came time to pay we weren't given a ticket to look over with a total, the waitress input everything in to a tablet table side turned it around in my face and told me to choose my tip amount which ranged between 10%-25% and then sign it before even taking my card. I asked for a receipt to review to make sure to review before I paid and it wasn't an option. They took my card and then gave me an itemized receipt after the transaction was complete. I ended up apologizing to my dad and husband for such a subpar Fathers Day lunch that ended up costing me $110 when I could have just taken them to a Dickey's BBQ drive through and would have at least been a better dollar value vs taste and experience. For a small town it's extremely expensive for the food to be so mediocre. read more

Stopped in as we passed thru town. What we ordered: Brisket plates w/ 2 sides each. Brisket - flavorful but a little dry Mac-n-cheese - DELICIOUS and the macaroni was perfectly cooked. Smoked Mashed Potatoes - Different but tasty. Fried mushrooms - A little too salty but overall, pretty good. Fried Cabbage - Pretty good as well. Peach Cobbler - Very disappointing. Tasted like canned peaches and the cobbler was more like an oatmeal consistency. The service was great and the staff were all super friendly. We would come back to try other things but would not make a special trip to come thru town just to try this BBQ, based on our experience. We were in the area for the first time and decided to try this place being right by the arena. Worst decision. The tables were not the cleanest, I guess the vent in the back was broken because there was more smoke inside than going to a bar 30 years ago, and to top it off, the service was not very good because if you are a small family or group they will skip your table on refills and stuff for a table with a ton of people. When we finally got our food after 30 minutes, there was not much meat for what the cost was. If you let your children have the Mac and Cheese, make sure they really like spicy, because it had more heat than anything in my meal. I would not recommend at all, I think the Dairy Queen next door would be a better value. read more

We were very excited to try this BBQ location, the menu and food looked great! Sadly the service was extremely slow, someone even left after not being handed a menu for 15 mins. The food was decent, we got pulled pork and brisket sliders with creamed corn, okra, and beans. The smoked cream corn was the highlight of the meal. The meat wasn't very flavorful but was tender, and the sauce was decent also. Also this location is very expensive, it was $40 for 2 meals. We will be back though because the breakfast looks really good so we will give it a second shot! read more

They've taken-over the near-airport location long occupied by Clayton's BBQ. The dining area is clean , comfortable, and attractive. The brisket plate was excellent. Brisket was very good, lean and well-trimmed with a very smoky flavor. A ton of excellent shoestring fries, and a large bowl of very slightly spicy mac & cheese. It was expensive, but it's a *lot* of food, and really good. The waitress was friendly and efficient. They even take Apple Pay. I'll definitely be back. read more

The place puts out a lot of effort but misses in a few critical areas. I had a brisket plate and my first and lasting impression was there's not much brisket there, about 1/4 pound I guess which was made worse because they slice it thin (which destroys the texture) to make it look like more. I know beef is up but $18. Get a sandwich or buy by the pound. Brisket itself looked good but I found it dry and crumbly, which led to a minor gripe on sauce (if the brisket is good no sauce needed) which is sweet and thick, I prefer a vinegar based thin sauce.
