I stumbled into Hau Hau while looking for a different grocery store, but I ended up doing all my shopping here instead. I was looking for the ingredients to make Taiwanese beef noodle soup at home, and not only did I find all the aromatics and soup base spices I needed, I realized they carry pretty much any of the more exotic ingredients one typically needs for most Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Viet, and even Filipino dishes here. I've started making a regular grocery trip here as I've reembraced my Asian roots and food tastes. So glad it's within reasonable distance from home, prices are great, and I can take as long as I need to find just the right product here! read more

Through three travails and even assails, Taiwanese Canadian mega-grocery T&T Supermarkets opening at Factoria, Trump's wacky tariffs on Chinese imports as high as 145%, and Seattle's periodic rousting of encampments and sweeping the unhoused onto Jackson, 12th Ave, and King Streets, like musical chairs where Chinatown never even had a chair, this enduring mom-and-pop Chinese grocery unfailingly imports old-world foodstuffs alongside locally-sourced fruits and vegetables, and meats and fish. We should commend surviving even one such struggle, which has decimated other businesses. The overall quality of their meats and their buyer's sourcing has grown better and more consistent over the years, executing a strategy available only to small wholesalers. Not only have this and other small ethnic grocers survived the profound impacts of Reagan dropping enforcement of the Robinson-Patman Act, they've executed remarkable niche marketing Jujitsu where other groceries have abandoned neighborhoods to become food deserts. Across King Street from similar Vietnamese-focused Lam's Seafood and other ethnic shops down King, 好好 retains its old-world, minimal packaging, small-store ambiance and charm. Wanna glimpse of what it is like to grocery shop in China? Come to Hau Hau on a weekend. You will be met with tons of shoppers and long lines with minimal parking availability. I personally shop in the middle of the week to avoid the crowds and lines. There is a small parking lot and street parking. However, I urge everyone especially the elderly to exercise caution parking on the streets due to an abundance of transients roaming around. In the supermarket, you will find that most of the produce and items are sold relatively cheaper than their competitors like Lam's seafood down the street. I would advise purchasing seafood at your own risk since I have heard fellow customers purchasing spoiled seafood and the owners refusing to provide a refund. Be prepared for potential unfriendly service by all the employees including not honoring labeled prices when the items ring up at a higher price. I have personally witnessed one of the owners (the younger of two sons) refusing to honor the price of an item and not even acknowledging the mistake. You would expect the younger generation to do better and not follow their immigrant parents' way of doing business, but unfortunately that is not always the case. The owners speak Teochew, Cantonese, Mandarin and some Vietnamese so it's perfect if you're looking to communicate in one of those dialects/languages while shopping. Don't expect an absolutely clean environment as you will encounter flies and some smelly areas especially around the seafood or elevator to the parking lot. Atmosphere is definitely not on par with western standards, but you will likely score some good deals here for either produce or some Asian products. read more

For Westerners. Do not expect the same experience you find at other groceries. This is a place to look at people, and to revel in having flown half way around the world. I shop at a lot of Asian Markets, and have learned they do things differently. Don't go in and look for a noodle aisle--there are five of them. Things are not organized like Western Markets. They are often organized by country--or capriciousness. Don't shop when you're in a rush. Shop when you have time to wonder what everything is. They have amazing prices on produce. Most you will have never seen before. Outside you can shop on the patio to pick them up in bulk. The meat, fish and frozen department--how should I say this? Well, I never go in planning on shopping from those departments. You smell the fish as you open the door. And you see a group of people smoking and cutting meat and wrapping it in the back. The frozen food has been defrosted and frozen several times. I ignore those sections....I would have to rate it as a 2 if I included it. But for canned, dried, herbs/spices, fresh veggies, it's great. I've never had to wait in line when I check out. One more characteristic of Asian groceries--they will always wrap glass in newspaper before it goes in the bag. And they always tie the top. It's a fun place. Often crowded. You are transformed 5000 miles away to China. Treat it like a ride in Disneyland. read more

If you want to know how miserable life is in mainland China, visit this place. I guess this is why we do it badly in China. People and workers are rude, everything is about their profits. Bet they can wrap trash in a bag/box and when customers want to return trash to them, they always point to the print area at the bottom that says "All sales are final" and they can get away with it. Take your money go to Lam's Seafood next door, they let you use CC. at any price, no minimum can return stuff as normal as in the US. read more

Found the market to be well stock. Once inside, it's better than I expected. The case of meat and poultry looked fresh. Produce selection was good. Much better than the other nearby market. I would come back and shop here again. Their prices are lower than the other markets in and around Chinatown. The only drawback is the area had more homeless folks. Admittedly, I begrudgingly shop at Hau Hau. I tend to get my I-District produce shopping done at Van Produce, but sometimes I just do not find the quality I am looking for in certain items that I want to get. Thus, I head up the street to one of the other shops. Of these, Hau Hau has consistently the lowest prices on produce and meats. Like baby bok choy for $.49/lb., garlic packs for $.99, shallots for $1.29 a package. Plus the fact that their produce selection is laid out inside and outside the store which makes it seem like there is more variety and choice. But seriously this place has the ick factor. Floors are dirty. I thought about abandoning a nickel I dropped on the floor. Being Asian, I ultimately decided to pick it up. It also smells, flies abound and cashiers are not all that courteous here when checking out. But from a value standpoint, I have to admit Hau Hau is a pretty good spot to find deals on produce. Surprised to find this supermarket next to Lam's, another good Asian supermarket. This place provides a good alternative that benefits us as customers. They have their own dedicated parking garage, which is nice. Some of the vegetables and fruits are displayed on the outdoors lot, which is covered. Overall, prices are slightly cheaper compared to Lam's. For instance, large sriracha bottle is $2.29 (vs $2.79). Some items are more expensive, but such is the nature of business. They don't have as many items as Lam's, which is significantly of a larger scale business. Credit card for $10 purchases or up. read more

One of my Asian co-workers took me here and this has now become my new grocery store. She tells me that she comes here every Sunday. I can only make it out here once every two weeks or so, since I work late a lot and it's not close to work or home But it's dirt cheap here. Coconuts $1, apples $0.49/lb, carrots $0.69/lb, head of lettuce or spinach $0.49, French bread $0.25, ground turkey $1.65/lb. Ok you get it, this is super cheap for Seattle. The other benefit of this market us that they have free parking in the garage. Not many places in the International District have free parking, so this is a gem. Granted the garage is always packed and it's very tight but at least it's there. They also take credit cards! read more

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh! I went BERSERK here. I literally spazzed out and filled 3 hand baskets of produce, meat, and fruit. The biggest, cheapest, sweetest strawberries I've ever had. Fresh Taro, Purple yams, HUGE Fuji apples, Daikon, Papayas the size of my head, Durian, Huge sweet carrots, like freaking ping pong sized grapes.... all nestled cozily and cheaply(!) in their original packing boxes under a deep blue tarp. When you see scores of little old asian people sifting through produce, you KNOW it's legit! The old men all wear baseball caps like my grandpa! Get your Mangos here! Big ones! For like 1 dollar. Screw you PPC QFC Whole Foods for your 3 dollar unripe/bruised mangos! A myriad of veggies from my childhood I haven't seen in years... Fresh Shiitake mushrooms for cheap, so so so much more... Walk inside if you dare, and experience meat so fresh the blood is almost fluorescent red! Whole chickens fresh off the farm! Any by whole I mean head on, legs a dangling. (not for the queasy or weak) Livers and kidneys and hearts - oh my! Beef bones for soup, oxtail at half what Uwajimaya rips you off for... and OMG BEEF FOR TAIWANESE BEEF NOODLE SOUP. You know, the kind with the cartilage running through it. Needless to say, I made Beef Noodle Soup that night. And a ton of other stuff. I had an impromptu dinner party for many friends because of this place. I got SO MUCH food.... All for like.. $45 bucks. I dare you to stock up AND feed 8 people at PPC/Whole Foods on $45 bucks. read more

You want Asian market? You want to experience what it feels like, to be in Asia, just for moment? Please make your way here, on a weekend, about midday. If that sounds like a good idea, then you might be like me. I brave the monster crowds that pack this Asian shopping market. Don't be scared of the very large blue tarp (when it rains) which covers all the fruit that is scattered about in their outdoor area. Step inside, and you are instantly bombarded with a dense packed to the brim shop if Asian flavors. I come here mainly for the seafood. Fresh live Tilapia is what I normally find myself getting, and of course they will clean it for you. They have lots of other frozen goodies, and you will find many of the fresh and frozen goods are priced very friendly to your pocketbook. I was there yesterday, and their fish monger was bringing fresh fish, literally as we were standing there, mid-day. I suspect that he comes by here a lot, as I had to wait in line for my fish request. They have a few selections with produce, but if you do dare, outside before you come in, I mentioned the fruit. You have to pick and choose; sure some of it looks like it was beat-up, but if that is all you are seeing; you might have found a box, which everyone else has already been through. One real difference here when compared to an American grocery store, they don't dig and select the best in the box. They just put out the box, and let you go at it; it may sound not so good, but it keeps prices down. Parking: Underground parking options, but it's busy, they also have a smaller lot across the street, but BEWARE, Hop Thanh owns the direct lot across the street, but behind it, is a smaller one which you can park at for free. Message here, read the signs. It's a true Asian market, with downright good prices. It makes my trips down to the International District well worth it. read more

This place has become my wife and I's go-to place for groceries in the ID. Here's why: -Consistently cheap fruit that is usually pretty fresh. I eat apples like a madman, and the apples here are cheaper than Safeway, QFC, or any other large grocery chain. Since apples are so big and they are charged by the pound, it can get expensive. Occasionally, I'll have an apple that is pretty bruised, but that's my own fault, because I choose my own produce. They'll usually have other fruits for cheap, too. -Asian vegetables. Yes, you can get them elsewhere in the ID, but it's usually pretty fresh and clean here for a lower price. -Free parking underneath. -They take credit cards! It can smell kind of funny in certain areas, especially as you get closer to the fish and meats sections. It doesn't mean their meat or seafood is of lower quality. I love Asian (non-Japanese) markets for their low prices, with my golden standard being the markets back down in SoCal, where the prices were cheap and the produce was fresh. North of there, the freshness of the produce seems to take a dive, being really hit or miss - this was often the case when I went to the 99 Ranches in the Bay Area, and it's definitely the case here with Hau Hau. There's a bit of digging around that needs to be done while you're shopping to get through the overly ripe or rotting produce, but, if you get there early enough, you can find fresh and mostly undamaged fruits hidden in their midst. The extra trouble and time spent shopping is well worth it in my opinion though, being able to save upwards of $100-200 every month compared to people I know who shop at places like Safeway and QFC (not comparing to places like Trader Joe's and Whole Foods since the level in quality is different). I'm still a bit iffy about their meat section, particularly since the smell there bothers me more than the seafood section, but hey, I haven't gotten sick yet. I come here to stock up on produce more often than meats though (going to places like Costco for higher quality beef), because you definitely can't beat the value you're getting. Great asian grocery store which is a nice alternative to Lam's in the area. Some items are cheaper, some are more expensive. I find the produce to be a little fresher and cleaner at Lam's though. Hau Hau has a parking garage which makes it super convenient to get in and get out. Checkout lines can be a little slow at times as it gets quite busy, but the store is run very efficiently. Horrible customer service and the food has some problem. We was waiting the line, and next is us. Suddenly, one customer speak their language "CUT LINE". We said to customer that we were waiting. Then the cashier stop us and let the customer cut line to be next. Then the cashier start throw our purchase items and be mean to us. This place is so cheap it makes my head spin. Cheap cheap cheap. Produce here is solid, again cheap, and way tastier than some of their more expensive "regular" grocery store fruit and veg you could buy elsewhere. Butcher area is full of cheap ass meats, including organs galore. Then you have all your lovely pre-packeged Asian goodies such as noodles, sauces, snacky things, etc. The quality on some items are questionable. Just keep your eyes peeled and make sure things are fresh and you will be ok. I'll be honest -- I mostly shop here for my dog. Yup. He's on a special diet and sometimes the items to make his senior-dog-friendly meals can add up. Not here. Sweet potatoes/Yams up the wazoo for cheap. Ground pork and chicken for $1.89 a lb or less? Hells, yes, stock up on that. And his occasional organ meats -- pig hearts, livers, chicken kidneys, etc. Cheap cheap cheap. The damn dog eats better than I do for half the price now that I have found Hau Hau. So, good for dog food yes. And good for Human foods too. read more

My new go-to place for dirt cheap produce, meat, and exotic Chinese-y items! Lemons are 6 for $1, cauliflower is $1.69/head, onions are $.29/lb, celery is $.99/bunch, cilantro for $.25/bunch, strawberries are $1.69/pint, avocados are $.69 each, huge bag of fresh basil for $.99, green onions are $.25/bunch, boneless skinless chicken breast for $1.99/lb, whole beef tenderloin for $3.99/lb, and shrimp for $3.69/lb. These prices are EASILY 1/2 to 1/8 of the prices you'd pay at your local QFC or Safeway. Yeah, yeah, it smells funky inside, the employees barely speak English, and the butchers cut the meat right out in the open. Get the fuck over it and get your ass over here! CAVEAT: Don't expect the employees to be very helpful. I asked one Chinese lady worker if they carried leeks and she just gave me a blank look and walked away from me. How do you say "leeks" in Chinese, dammit?! Le sigh. read more

You know how sometimes you are all "Man, I really want to braise some duck gizzards tonight"? Or maybe "I'm tired of cooking vegetables I understand," or even "I sure wish I had an entire milk crate full of fish heads to choose from." No? Well, it's possible Hau Hau is not for you. But. If you like a good selection of wackily cheap produce (that, to be fair, you often need to use up quickly because they are often on the older end of the freshness spectrum), strange meats to satisfy some odd craving (my brother and I used to battle over who got the chicken heart, but when you buy them by the tray, there's no need for bickering), and an array of seafood choices from whole fish to the aforementioned heads, Hau Hau has your back. The staff is helpful in a vaguely puzzled why-is-this-large-man-asking-me-about-the-seventeen-kinds-of-choy kind of way, and it's easy to buy a week's worth of food for twenty or thirty bucks. And browsing the food outside on the terrace is nice on pleasant days. So go, buy, and cook. And if you figure out how to make those tiny Indonesian eggplant things avoid both the bitter and mushy ends of the simmering continuum at once, let me know. Oh - tips - you can park in the underground lot if you need, and it's a $10 minimum to use a credit card. And hitting ten bucks at this place is harder than you think if you are just buying produce. read more

My roommate and I stopped in here on a whim last night because we somehow got it in our heads to buy "spooky booze," aka unknown wines and/or soju. Spoilers: we did not find any spooky booze. Sad, I know. What we did find: pig uterus. Perhaps I haven't been very observant at other markets I've been to, but I think that's the first time I've ever seen packaged uterus. Right next to the honeycomb tripe. My roommate was squicked out, but I was/am intrigued. How (hau) do you cook a uterus? Anyway, they had loads of other organs (heart, liver, kidneys, lungs although the package said bungs and I had to snort a little bit, stomachs, intestines, faces, all the usual culprits) for really good prices. The produce looked pretty good and pretty cheap as well, although we just ended up picking up some assorted spices/pastes/sauces/pickled chilis to round out our pantry. I will be back, though, once I find a good uterus recipe. And I'm definitely not going to tell my roommate what she's eating. read more

I've had mixed experiences here. There is lots of good produce for sure. And it's really amazingly cheap. And lots and lots of fish. But they also seem to be lacking anything that's not Chinese. Not as much of a Pan Asian grocery store as Lam's or Viet-Wah or Uwaji. And be warned, they are ADAMANT about the $10 minimum on card. At $9.90 we were told to get something else so it meets $10. Part of this is a mixed blessing of things being so damn cheap, it can be harder to meet $10 than you'd expect. The review of Hau Hau is easy: do you want to buy fresh and least expensive meat in Seattle? Then Hau Hau is your place. They practically have everything you need- pork, beef, chicken (with head and feet still attached), pork hearts (my dogs' favorite treat), pork brains, goat and rabbit. In addition all fish you can imagine and all the produce you've ever seen on National Geographic channel. The down side? Well, the smell is a little, let's say, off... I usually go to Rising as I pass it every day on my way home from work, but as it's a weekend and I have extra time, I decided to try a market that's an additional ten steps away. The selection is a little larger and they had many fruits which are harder to find, as well as a more impressive selection of herbs. However, I wasn't exactly won over. It's probably my fault for grocery shopping at 5pm on a Saturday, but much of the produce I just wouldn't buy. The herbs especially were all rotten, and the broccoli was yellow and wilted. They also didn't have any Japanese daikon. The fish and meat selection was pretty good, and if you're sourcing chicken feet or organ meats, you've found the right place. I will stop by again on a different day to give it another chance, because I'm interested in some of the produce I'm unfamiliar with, but I didn't buy too much today. Oh, and as you can expect, everything was pretty cheap. I did find some yummy looking cabbage and mushrooms, and I once again remember why I try to avoid QFC. read more

Extremely rude and very terrible customer service. We purchased a box of coconut. We looked at the bottom of the box, we saw the date 24/4/18. We think that's the expiration date. Some might think that's the released sale date to worldwide markets. Regardless, I still think it's old, not fresh. We came back to the store to return it with the receipt. The store owner got very upset, and said that's the released sale date, not expiration date. We were still firm about returning it. The owner got mad and told us NOT to come back ever to her store again. We told her, absolutely we won't ever come back. That's a guarantee. read more

Wow. The prices maybe cheap but this place has terrible customer service! I bought two boxes of frozen shrimp from here, opened one box to find that it had a weird stench to it and had to throw out the entire box. I went back with the second box with the receipt 7 days later (which was withing their return policy period as stated on the receipt). I talked to the owner who wasn't happy on having to do the return. She said they don't usually allow returns or exchanges on frozen foods and was giving me attitude! She told me I had to exchange it for other merchandise which I was fine with. I ended up being $0.30 short of my exchange and she refused to give me the difference back. This is only one of the many occasions where I've had bad experiences with Hau Hau and from now on I will not be returning. It's impressive how much Hau Hau manages to fit into a tiny space. It makes it kind of hard to navigate, so I try to come here on a weekday, not a weekend, and definitely not the Sunday before Chinese New Year, the way I accidentally did once. They may not have my favorite brand of ramen, but that's probably just as well. All the essentials are here--peanut oil (now--for a while there seemed to be none available anywhere for some reason), black vinegar, Shaoxing wine, fermented bean pastes, chow fun noodles, thousand year old eggs, skinny bamboo shoots, dried mushrooms and tree ears and tofu skins. Plus lots of good fresh stuff. Four stars for basic usefulness, and an extra star because if it weren't for reliable old Hau Hau, I would have to be driving to 99 Ranch all the time, and wouldn't have been able to throw off the burden of car ownership. read more

Okay so the produce is outside, which kind of sucked when it was freezing/windy but you know what, that's okay because it's cheap! You have to dig for the good stuff though, otherwise you're left with some sketchy/squishy bell peppers and some questionably moldy Chinese Eggplant. There is a great selection of goods. From sauces to fresh noodles and Siu Mai wrappers. I was looking for a Chinese grocery store (like the ones in Chicago) and I finally found one. The owner is a Chinese Vietnamese woman and she is nothing short of a boss lady. Watching her manage her entire grocery store from the meat and seafood section in the back, to the registers in the front as well as the fruits and veges in the patio is truly entertaining. She is very loud and is not shy to shout across the entire store. It doesn't seem like anything gets by her. I would give this place two stars if came to visual appeal. But this is a true Asian grocery market that utilizes literally every possible square inch of it's space. I love coming here to buy fresh seafood. They have some of the biggest fish you'll find locally. Meat here is excellent as well and is very cheap. The selection is not as good as Lams and the layout is a bit inefficient. Also the parking lot is a scary place. You'll find tons of very terrible drivers trying to park in the dark with limited lighting and random construction blocks in the way. I was parked in the car for five minutes when someone pulled in next to me and proceeded to gas their car into the wall. In the spot ahead of me, a car came and bumped into the cinder blocks that were just there in the dark. I hesitated to leave my car there. Overall the supermarket has low prices but he vegetables are not as nice looking as at whole foods which is expected.
