This costed $3 just to put something healthier in my plate.....really!? I still took it and decided it COULD be worth it. NOPE!!! Take the harsh reviews with a grain of salt. I'd suspect those that don't think this is Hawaiian food don't know what traditional Hawaiian food is, let alone tastes like. This place is on par with Hawaiian Style Cafe, in Hawaii, and comes close to Bamboo Grove Grill in Portland. It's far better than NoHo's. The food is fresh. Quick & easy ordering process for pickup. Food was ready in less than 20 min, and it was hot and delicious. I ordered the grilled chicken with vegetables and loved it! Came to this place for the first time and I was not disappointed! The portion sizes are true to Hawaii, 100 man meal style. The macaroni salad is awesome and has just enough pepper. The chicken was moist and cooked well, quick friendly service and a clean bathroom. They have lots of drinks to choose from and extra sauce on hand if that's what you prefer. The food is good. The restaurant could be a lot cleaner. I used the bathroom before I ate and I was almost hesitant to eat the food. The men's bathroom was disgusting. There was at least a dozen spots where someone wiped their boogers on the wall. It reminded me of a gas station bathroom. I love Hawaiian time and stopped for some delicious kalua pork, unfortunately it was late in the day and like most other Hawaiian places the pig is usually gone by the time I get there lol, however disappointed I was the cashier was so nice about it. I ended up getting vegetables and my daughter had some beef plate that were both delicious. These were the best restaurant veggies I've ever had, so fresh and not over cooked! So again unfortunately I didnt get my favorite (you should definitely go try some when available) and could have just went somewhere else, but because of the fabulous front desk chick we grabbed some food to go! I normally don't patronize fast-food joints but I like Hawaiian food and in these extreme times I am expanding my palette of Salem takeout venues. This place is easy to spot off a very congested arterial and I pulled in, parked, and went inside. Got a small order of Honolulu beef and found it delicious and generous with the meat portion. I like to cook and if I could achieve the balance in the sauce they use I would consider it a successful day in the kitchen. Love that there's a drive thru. I got the huli huli chicken and the Kalua pig. Both were very tender. The huli huli chicken had good flavor and I would definitely order it again. The Kalua pig was nice and juicy although I would say it wasn't very flavorful. Next time I plan to bring some hawaiian salt (or any salt) so that there is more taste to it. This is a solid 4 star restaurant, don't believe some of the harsh reviewers. Hawaiian Time offers a hot, quick, fresh, BBQ meat experience with great value. The portions are huge; the plates are enough to serve 2 adults. The grilled chicken and vegetables were delicious, the chicken served in a delicious marinade. The Kekoa's special beef is juicy and tender. The rice was standard, though served hot and just the right texture, not too dry. The macaroni salad was surprisingly good, and I'm just about the last person to order macaroni salad. Of note, we were there with a very large group, 10+ young children. I braced myself as I entered, expecting the worst. Reading previous reviews had made me terribly leery about whether to even give Hawaiian Time the benefit of a doubt, but I'm sure glad I did! It is true, the initial layout is awkward. Just a few steps inside the door and straight ahead is the counter. I can see how a line would make things bad very fast. Fortunately, I arrived just minutes after they opened on a long lunch break from work. There was no one else present save myself. I tentatively approached the young lady behind the computer screen and greeted her with a friendly "I've been to a Hawaiian Time in Cali, and loved it, but have not been to either Salem location yet - I am sure you guys are really good too!" She brightened right up and made small talk about how the new location is really great and if I'd like a sample of any of the meats. I declined and ordered the Medium sized Pork meal. And a soda. As she happily placed my food order I moseyed over to the self serve soda fountain to fill up with Pepsi. This turned out to be a messy situation. The Pepsi tab was over carbonated and bubbled right up over my cup, and my glass had only been half filled! This was easily cleaned and I waited till the bubbles had subsided before filling a bit more. I was expecting a long wait, but before I had even used a napkin to wipe down the side of my now filled soda, I was hollered at that my order was ready. This was a nice surprise. As I grabbed my lunch, the lady asked if I would like some BBQ sauce. At first I said no, but at her insistence that it was the best BBQ sauce ever, I took a couple. Next was on the a nice shady spot at Wallace Marine Park to enjoy my meal. There was plenty of rice, but not overly so in my opinion - but then, I do love rice. It was perhaps a little softer than the way I prepare my own, but it was alright. The macaroni salad was good in it's own unique way. It seemed to be a very simple recipe, but it worked and I ate every bite. The highlight of the meal was the pork, hands down. I must say that this is only after a generous helping of the BBQ sauces though. Alone, the pork was only so-so. With the tasty sauce, it was fantastic! I recommend getting at least a couple little cups of it. I didn't think the prices were unreasonable, I just figure everything in this economy is going up a bit. For the cost, I was very pleased with my meal, and service. Will likely return to the other location though just for convenience. read more

Sometimes, you just eat it cuz you're so damned hungry that you don't have time to futz with it. The whole time, you're thinking, "Add this to the 'Never Again' list." This place has made that list for me. First a disclaimer, I'm Hawai'ian. It's the first item on the menu and it's supposed to be "tender strips of beef". Turned out to be dried out chunks of over marinated gunk. It was supposed to come with two scoops rice and one scoop of Mac Salad. No Auntie of mine EVER put garlic in her Mac Salad and this was a VERY garlicky Mac Salad- never mind the little black specs of whatever the heck that was that was in it. Now add to it the pricetag of $10 (before tip - because there is a line on the receipt for you to provide one) and it's a meal set up for disappointment. Keeping in mind the space left for a tip; I get my To Go order (the cook had to come out of the kitchen to give them to the customers because the cashiers were too busy) thinking that I'll get to have a nice little picnic in the sun. Yay! Wrong. No napkins, no silverware - nothing. However, I did get a plastic little cup full of salty Teriyaki-wanna-be sauce to pour over my dried out beef. Weee? If I wanted sticky rice, garlic and dried out beef, I would have not been disappointed here. I'm thinking that I could have done better with the melted protein bar that was in my bag. Next time, if melted protein bar, starvation and Hawaiian Time in Salem are my options, I'll go with starvation or the protein bar. Hawaiian Time in Salem won't be an option. read more

We are they turning away customers when they're are no customers? Too busy to answer multiple calls for pickup order, but employees audbling mentioning how slow it is. Which one is it. Hire better employees not just more. Person at the front was sitting on the counter on her phone while the store phone rang and rang while I waited for my food. Hawaiian barbecue is one of my favorite foods. I came to this place because it was close and had decent reviews. The food was okay, the chicken is by far tastier than the beef, the macaroni salad was not as good as other places. I did like that they give you a heaping helping of rice, but because they put rice under the meat you get less meat. I was bummed that they do not have beef kalbi ribs on the menu. read more

Really enjoyed the food here. Enough so that I came two days in a row. Both times I got the mixed plate with Mauna Loa chicken with Thai chili sauce and beef with Korean marinade. That chili sauce was spicy and kicked my taste buds in the best way. I really enjoyed the beef with the marinade too, that had hints of soy sauce, garlic and sweet flavors. The meats are served on top of white rice and the sauce covers the rice, which is awesome deliciousness. The meal is also served with a great black peppery macaroni salad, which helps time down some of the spiciness. The smallest meal was around $11 and ready in about five minutes. There are tables in the front (which I interpreted as dog-friendly) with plenty of parking in the lot and in the same strip mall as a Carl's Jr. and beer shop. read more

Hawaiian Time is a great place to go for a quick bite of something different. The menu has several different options for meat and favors, and you can even do a combo plate! The prices are a little spendier than typical fast food, but they do offer quite a bit for the buck. My favorites are the Mauna Loa chicken and the pulled pork! Comes with heaps of rice as well as a good Mac salad (or ask for extra rice if you don't like the Mac salad) The staff has always been friendly, and only once in the several times I have eaten there was there ever a mistake. When I brought it to their attention they were quick to make it right and then some! The restaurant area is smaller than their flagship location on mission but they have a convenient drive thru! Word of caution, the location used to be a service station so in the winter it can be cold in there since they kept the garage doors as part of the look. read more

Clean, friendly service, good price, really good food. I only wish there was more than one vegetarian option, but I appreciate the simplicity of the menu. The one here in west salem is waaaay better than the one we previously ate at in Springfield on Olympic street. This location has amazing pasta salad, I also really enjoyed the bbq sauce. (I put it on my mac salad and it was gone in record time) so good! I also loved the teriyaki sauce. I practically used half a bottle I loved it so much ! Overall, I would come out here again. The only things for me were how far out of the way it was (15 drive) and the lack of vegetarian options (only 1) but thats still more that some places! The food was definitely worth coming back for. We always have the worst luck ordering with them. I know everyone is busy, and we were told there was another 5-10 minute wait on rice-no problem, we waited patiently. When the rice was assumed to be done, the order before ours left out the door. Those guys checked the order in their car and brought it back because it turns out it was ours. They apologized and said ours would be right out. When they brought it out, they put one small container on the top and said the rice was too hot to put with the others. I was confused because there was only one small container and we ordered double rice on both. We didn't want to make a fuss so we left when our order was done. We checked when we got across the street, and we received one tiny scoop of rice in the small container and double Mac on both large orders. Not what we ordered. Visited on a Sunday afternoon and the small space was very crowded. The counter person was very kind and very patient with the large (and confused) group ahead of me. Although crowded, the staff was vigilant in keeping tables clean and cleared. I came hoping for a Loco Moco and was disappointed that was not a menu option. The Honolulu Beef plate was ok. While the beef was flavorful, many of my pieces were very small, very thin and over cooked. The macaroni salad was so thick with black pepper that all other ingredients were inert. read more
