Fortunately for me, I must have some luck here. I can see that because you involve white rice in the dishes, cutting back on portions of meat/mac salad is easier. However, this isn't the case for me. I've been to this location only, not the others and can say it's pretty good. I always get the mona loa chicken dish, it has a great flavor to it. Splash some sesame seeds and get some teryaki sauce and your good. I know it sounds silly but this food does equal the authentic stuff when I visited one of my friends in Hawaii, where for two weeks I only ate local/Philippine food. . . Sure I wanted a steak when I got back but I felt so cleansed and healthy for some reason. You wouldn't think so. . . oddly enough. I have been relatively happy with my experiences at both Hawaiian Time locations in Salem. I found that the one on Mission St was a little better, but I am not as low on this place as other reviewers have been. Some notes: - The entry location was not designed very well. There is a very small distance between the doors and the order counter. When even a small line gets started, it becomes an awkward curl to one of the sides and makes for a jumble, especially when people on one side are going to refill drinks on the other side. - We personally enjoy the limited menu. I'd rather have something that I know the cooks (should) know how to make properly, as opposed to a ton of choices. We also don't mind the large amounts of rice. However, we (as opposed to others) have been very pleased with the amount of meat/chicken/veggies we have gotten on top of the rice. We may just be getting lucky, or do not require more meat, as I'm not sure my wife or I could have eaten more with our meal. We also LOVE the macaroni salad they make. That being said, it's not a good sign when there is a fancy sign on the counter that says, "Sorry, we are out of pork". If there is a need for a pre-made sign, maybe its time to get more pork. The young girl behind the counter was very apologetic and said that she thinks that they only cook 2 "pigs" a day at the current moment. Maybe they are just trying to figure how many they make to accommodate the need. So without pork this go around, I got their beef special. I was not as thrilled about it as I was the pork at the Mission St location. It seemed a bit chewy/vainy and for it being the location "special" it felt a little on the bland side for me. However, my wife tasted it and said she really liked the taste, so who knows. She had the Veggie plate and was pleased with both the amount and taste. - Service was fine. As I mentioned on my Mission Street review, it is just order taking so it's not really imperative for me to have high-level service. The young girl appeared green in her job, but was very friendly. About halfway through our meal, my daughter decided she wanted some lemonade. At that time, we got back in line, which had gotten a little long (and fell into that the awkward curve shape). A cook from the back came up to help and when he found out we just wanted a drink, grabbed a cup and said not to worry about paying. That was a nice gesture that he did not have to do. All in all, I still think (hope) that over time Hawaiian times will improve. I'm not sure why we have had more positive experiences than others, but I would suggest giving it a try and not completely writing it off. read more

I've had awesome food in Hawaii and on the mainland, at fancy restaurants, hole in the wall joints, shanty's and around a family dinner table and this is the worst I have ever had! I will say that this place (chain) is delicious. Their food is consistently delicious. I love their food. What I absolutely hate about the West Salem location in particular, as this is the location we frequent, is that they are NEVER consistent in the sizing of their Chinese Chicken Salad. It is hit and miss. About 50% of the time, I get a nice big salad that fills up the container. This salad costs $8.95....it should fill up their take out container. The other 50% of the time, it is so measly that it barely fills up the tray. As in, there is very little greens. The amount of chicken and toppings are always the same, but the lettuce amount varies. Why aren't employees trained to make this salad the same? For almost nine bucks, shouldn't I get more romaine lettuce? After all, it is the bulk of the salad and one of the cheapest ingredients. Pretty disappointed in their salad making skills. Seems they need better training. read more

I'm a kama'aina ... I grew up in Hawaii. So plate lunch takes me to a happy place. Yet I have to admit, they give me more food than I need! But so tasty. My total fallback is the Kalua pig. Smoky, salty, moist ... so wonderful with the rice. If it gets cold on my way home it's easy to heat up again. The teriyaki chicken is really great too. I get the combo sometimes ... how can you beat pig, chicken and rice? Well ... you can add grilled veggies! I nix the macaroni salad, which is not as great as the rest, and replace with veggies. Then add a real Hawaiian Sun Guava Nectar (all natural) ... takes me back to the mudslides and picking plumerias. Thank goodness it's on the way home from Salem! read more

We were traveling thru the area from Denver and my husband said we should find a Hawaiian BBQ place. So I went to Yelp and found this place and was NOT disappointed at all. The place is bright and cheery. Very clean and the staff is wonderful and very friendly. In fact she made some suggestions that were very helpful when we ordered. We both had the combinations of lava (spicey) and teriyaki chicken. Very tasty and a huge serving. If we ever come back thru town again, it will be our first stop. read more

We love the food here. I recommend the #4 which is pulled pork and comes with sides of white rice and macaroni salad. When you get this meal it does not have sauce on it. There are free condiments available in large squeeze bottles. Put BBQ sauce on the meat and teriyaki sauce on the rice. We ordered two of the large size boxes and split it between one adult, one teen, and two kids, and still had some leftover. I just made another lunch out of 1/2 of what we had left. The rice and pork microwave nicely, and did not dry out. This place is a counter service restaurant, where you walk up to order and then seat yourself. I have not tried the other options on the menu because the #4 pork is fantastic. read more

I like the food, have been to Hawaii many many times and have family and friends who live on the islands. I know what a lunch plate should be and Hawaiian Time tries and somewhat gets it close, but the service sucks... they run out of chicken and pork on several occasions that I have been there. You dont run out of pulled pork or chicken for dinner 6pm to be exact. This only being the two meat dishes they have can cause quite a problem for customers. The Hawaiians I know would never run out of pork or chicken for dinner or lunch. Second, their customer service is so incontensence that it pisses me off everytime I go there. The drive thur is the worst no hello or thank you after the you've ordered or paid for your food. There is a skinny little gal and she definitely needs some training on customer service. Their menu board at the drive thur states one price but when you get up to the window they want to charge you something different...Whats wrong with this picture is that you cant advertise one thing and try to charge or change it when you want a customer to purchase that product...can I say illegal... The gal tonite told me they had no pork, its 6pm I say its dinner time and you have no pork at all. She suggested I drive 8 miles over to there other store if I wanted pork...what the hell. I might like there food but I will not go there again, burn me once, twice but this is the third time from this location, so I wont be back. Its to bad because I'm all for supporting local resturants, but if the service and best pratices of businees are violated I can not justify speeding my money there any longer. read more

I have been frequenting this location every Wednesday since October and have never had a bad experience. My boyfriend and I share a large pork and rice meal and it is always enough for us, and very tasty. We have never seen a sign indicating they were out of anything. We have been offered samples, and the place is always clean. The service is always friendly and because we come every week, the employees remember us, even to the extent that one of the young ladies even remembered the name my boyfriend gave her a few weeks back. As long as I am in West Salem, I will continue to visit the folks here. read more

This chain is my favorite hawaiian one, this was the first time I have been to this specific location. If we are in Salem we usually go to the Mission street locarion and its always been good. Pretty bland. I had the Hawaiian beef special. Meat had a lot of gristle hence very chewy. Not really much flavor. Served with a lot of rice which I suppose is good (regular size). Noticed this place was new and decided to try it out. Granted I went on opening week so I give them a little grace for still getting things worked out. The options here are very limited. First of all the menu was really hard to read and there were no pictures so you could see what you were ordering, though I don't know if it's the same at their south location. All their orders were put in to-go containers even when people were eating there, maybe their dishwasher broke? For about $9 I got a chicken/beef combo on white rice. Brown rice was not an option, nor was substituting the mac salad with veggies unless you pay an extra $3 (seems quite high for veggies) White rice is a lot of empty calories and the meat was ok but very salty and sparse. The Mac Salad was basically mayo and pepper... and a lot of mayo too, not much taste to it at all and really kinda gross. I was surprised and disappointed that they don't have pineapple on the menu too. They also didn't allow very much flexibility on customizing an order. You could hold the mushrooms on the veggie plate but, as before stated you can't substitute veggies for mac salad. Two hours after eating here I had a sodium shock migraine. For me this kind of migraine is pretty distinct and I'm pretty careful about not getting them because they are so painful. I'm not sure how much sodium is in their meats but it must be a lot. I really can't recommend them and I probably won't go back unless I hear they add options to their menu like brown rice and pineapple and become more flexible with substitutions. White rice is really not worth that much money. Many restaurants use it as a free side with entres. On the positive note I have to give our server a shout out. Individually she is an outstanding worker and gave us great patience, service, and had a nice attitude. I think some place more worthy of her skill is bound to snatch her up soon. I wish I had gotten her name. She was working late Saturday opening week and I think she was the only female working that night. read more

Placed a large (11 main dishes) order on the phone today- told it would be ten minutes- no problem, got there and paid the bill- added a tip because I am in the service industry and usually give a little something- 10% or so for takeout usually. Go back to my office with the food and we realize that one dish is missing- not a huge deal but a bit of a hassle to drive back over- at this point I look at the bill and realize that they tacked on a 10% surcharge- and never disclosed this at any point- I just figured that the amount sounded about right- when I brought that up to the cashier she just seemed to blow me off- I would have thought that somewhere along the way someone should have mentioned the surcharge- I get the mandatory tip in a restaurant for a table of 6 or more but this is takeout- no extra work to do 10 plates over doing 2- I buy lunch for my employees every saturday and I doubt that we will be back- I would have thought the least they could have done was offer to comp the one they left out of the order on the first trip- read more

The service and quality of food has severely declined over the last few years. I repeatedly have sub-par service but tonight's experience prompted me to write this negative review. I was given the wrong order in the drive thru which I didn't notice until getting home. The person at the window gave zero service beyond handing me the card slip to sign and my food. Just got back from Maui yesterday and was pleasantly surprised to find this place in Salem! Even the to-go boxes are the same as I was served in Maui at Coconuts Fish Tacos. After the error was discovered they tried to give me the plate that had already been given to another person. Not exactly a kosher mover in my opinion.
