It's a fun, western themed steakhouse. Yes, it's a little gimmicky but also well executed and even charming. I really liked the ambiance here and it was perfect for a fun birthday celebration. Huge space so lots of room for big parties - there's a separate room but also large tents with tables. We got the special tasting board and I would highly recommend that as it came with three different cuts. It also comes with every sauce and they were all spectacular. I was really disappointed with my experience at Hawkeye & Huckleberry. The food itself was underwhelming. I ordered the pork belly for $24 and received four pieces with fruit. Unfortunately, the pork belly was dry and chewy rather than tender, and I didn't find the dish particularly flavorful or enjoyable for the price. Service also felt disorganized, but my biggest concern was cleanliness. While sitting at the bar, I had flies landing on and around my food, which I photographed. That immediately raised sanitation concerns and made it difficult to enjoy the rest of my meal. I had expected a much more polished experience from a restaurant associated with Chef Brian Malarkey. Between the food quality, service, value, and cleanliness issue, this visit fell well short of my expectations. Well, we did not know what to expect, and it was not what we expected. If you are looking for intimate dining, this is not the place. There's loud music, it's very dark, set up like a cafeteria with hard chairs and tables with no intimate space unless you reserve a tent. Our servers were awesome, the atmosphere was fun, the steaks were a little overpriced. They were probably 15 to 20% higher than most steakhouses that I eat at. If it was a higher end intimate location, I can see the extra price, but it misses the mark as far as fine dining. No complaints. Happy Hour here is only an hour and that hour is from 4pm to 5pm even on Saturdays. I would highly suggest making reservations online. You can make them for the dining room, bar tables and the patio. The vibe here is energetic with creative decor. Everyone at the table had the a burger ($10) Beef Tallow Fries ($5) and a Cesar salad ($10). The burger was good: beef patty, cheese and house sauce with a dill pickle spear. The fries are some of the best around and are served with a side of ketchup and their house sauce which I just love. Now the Cesar /salad was one of the best I've had in quite some time. It had a great dressing to greens ratio and as far as I'm concerned you can never have too much cheese & the croutons had a nice crisp without being hard to eat. We had the baked Alaska for desert, we were able to share with the table which we enjoyed, a little hard to eat with spoons as the ice cream was a bit hard but delicious. Next time I'll try the sloppy Joe, haven't had one of those in a while. If happy hour was this enjoyable I can only imagine how good dinner would be. I was here early, so I tried the happy hour for the first time. It's available from 4-5 in the greater lounge area -- at the bar, at tables behind the bar, and in the courtyard. I ordered the Happy Hour burger, the fries, and a Caesar salad. The Caesar arrived first with a snowstorm of parmesan cheese on top and a garlic-forward dressing, just the way I like it. The burger was smash-burger style but, unlike a "normal" smash burger, it was a thick patty, loaded with flavor. Topped with cheese and a toasted brioche bun, it was classic Americana. And the fries? The beef tallow thick-cut fries? A little light on the salt for my taste but that was easily solved. They were cooked to perfection, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I'm actually salivating thinking about them. My server, Demetri, was fast, professional, and friendly and I had a dinner that was too much to finish for $25. That was a happy hour deal! read more

We stopped in H&H on a Saturday evening, and the place was loud and lively. We were a party of 12, in a private room, and we were seated right away, despite being a few minutes early. This establishment tries to be cowboy, but they just end up hipster cowboy. It's all fun, regardless. Our drink and appetizer orders were taken promptly, and brought out pretty quickly. The pork belly app had good flavor, but not sure it's worth the price. The "Barrel Racer" drink, however; was good enough that I ordered a second one (basically a cucumber margarita). Sometime in there, four of us did a shot-ski, which is four boot shaped shot glasses mounted to an old wooden school. They didn't have the best tasting tequila available, but it was still fun. For a main dish, I went with the Oregon Coast Salmon entree. The fish was cooked to perfection, and tasted very fresh. The accompanying sauce wasn't quite as impressive, but still good. The best part of the meal was the beef Fat Fries -- probably about the best fries I've ever had. They were golden brown, with a crisp crust, and a soft velvety interior. I'd go back again just for those. None of our group wanted dessert, other than four who wanted to do an espresso martini shot-ski. While the food was good, and we all had fun, there are options in Bend that offer more excitement for the palate, at a similar price point. read more

Heard Brian Malarkey owned this place so I had high expectations. They had a valentines special with a set menu for $100 which seemed like a good deal. Started with the beet burrata salad which was a good starter but small for the price. My bf wanted to order the tomahawk steak so we ended getting that. With it being 32 oz for $140, I was expecting a little more meat but the bone weighed quite a bit. It was an ok amount for two though with sides. We also ordered broccolini which had some type of white sauce and cheese on it. It was cooked well and had good flavor. Ended with the warm apple cobbler. It had a cornbread type topping instead of the classic oatmeal with a small amount of samples in a pan about the size of your palm. Food was cooked well and had good flavor. A little torn here - the food was really tasty, the happy hour a great deal, but service left a little to be desired. We arrived a little after 4 to find a lively, festive environment and an almost full restaurant already! No room at the bar, but we were seated immediately. Our table ordered drinks and, shortly afterward, entrees and some sides. Everyone agreed the Hawkeye Burger was really tasty. I've been eating so many smashburgers over the last year, it was nice to have a higher quality burger. I thought it was a little odd at first - there were two patties, each about 1/2 - 2/3 the width of the bun and stacked in an offset pattern. After I got used to the unique stack, I enjoyed the variation in bites and loved the flavor of the beef. The burger sauce was tasty and seemed to have a hint of horseradish in it. The pickle on top was really nice also. The fries were also a hit with table. They had a nice crispy texture on the outside with a pillow-y interior. I'm not usually a fan of bigger, steak fries, but these were good, and I found my go-to's in the smaller fries with a greater exterior-to-interior ratio. My only complaint is the service was a little lackluster - we didn't receive one of our cocktails (had to flag down our server), didn't receive one of the entrees (had to flag down our server), and were charged for a burger we never received (had to flag down our server). This might have been a fluke and won't stop us from returning. My last note is that this is a large, open space with a lively atmosphere. Having a conversation with your table without speaking at an elevated volume is a near impossibility. read more

Service was spectacular, we were seated outside, the patio was well shaded in the area we were in. We started with the pork belly and the beets with burrata. Both were very good, only issue is that there were a ton of beets compared to the amount of burrata. We then ordered entrees, pork chop and steak frites. For sides we had Mac and Cheese, broccolini, and the best cornbread I have ever had. The pork chop was very flavorful, well cooked, fork tender, and plenty big. The steak frites was perfectly cooke and came with some delicious fries. The Mac and cheese was creamy, wasn't over powered by the breadcrumbs. The broccolini had a tasty cream sauce and a hint of lemon. The cornbread was buttery which I love, it was sweet, had great textured and would rate it 1000/10. Our drinks were good as well, I had the golden hour and my wife had the Doc Holiday x2. Overall, we would definitely go back. Stopped by Hawkeye & Huckleberry for drinks before dinner and absolutely loved the vibe! The whole place has a super cute modern country western theme with fun decor and cozy tent-style dining areas that make the atmosphere feel unique and inviting. We grabbed seats at the bar and tried the Tumalo Honey which was a fabulous blackberry-forward cocktail that was refreshing and perfectly balanced. We also had the Doc Holliday, which was like a sweeter twist on an Old Fashioned and incredibly smooth. The drinks were great, the ambiance was on point, and the vibes were definitely there. Ok, here's my review of Hawkeye & Huckleberry: Not impressed! It's the popular, happnin' place in Bend. Excellent music playing - our Era. However... Service was really, really bad. We had to flag someone down after waiting 20 minutes after being seated. Many, many servers just walked past, no smile, no eye contact, our presence was not acknowledged by anyone. After 10 minutes of waiting I started counting the number of servers I saw. At one point there were many servers hanging out, talking and doing nothing at the back of the huge bar, 8 at one point, 10 at another. Finally, Rocky flagged down a gal who had walked past 3 times and asked her, "are we supposed to place our order at the bar?" Finally, with prompting, we had a bartender come over and take our drink order. With that 20 minute wait for service Hawkeye & Huckleberry missed out on an additional drink order of $30 - $40 and the server missed out on a tip on top of that. Speaking of tips - we tip very well - 20-22%. We docked the tip $1 for every 5 minutes that we waited to just be acknowledged. We also docked $2 for no one checking back to see if the $77 filet was prepared correctly, it wasn't. My husband ordered it medium rare, it was served medium. I'm a chef, I know the difference. He ate it, as is, because it was another 10 minutes before the server came back and asked how it was. They lost $6 on the tip in total, and we really should have deducted more. Absolutely none of the servers ever smiled to us or any of the tables around us (this is not an exaggeration, it's one of my pet peeves so I pay attention). I have an extremely hard time with that...that's bad management, not training your staff properly. Even when we entered the establishment we were not welcomed with a smile or made to feel that they were glad we were there. In my opinion, in an establishment where they pride themselves on having a celebrity chef and you're upcharging because of that, every one who enters should be treated like a friend. Hostess staff should smile, welcome patrons, ask if you've been in before, tell them your glad to have them join them for dinner, just make patrons feel welcomed! A smile goes a long way! I also had indicated in the reservation that we were celebrating a birthday, the hostess did ask who's birthday, I told her my husbands. Then it was dropped there. The server didn't say a word. Why ask if it's a special event/celebration if you're not going to acknowledge it. Our entire time there we felt like we were putting staff out. The food: The Caesar salad was excellent! Could actually taste the anchovy- I love that! Very, very good! Pepperoni Hot Honey pizza...NO! Nothing special, at all. Being 1/2 Mexican I like hot pepper shakes on my pizza anyway. Honey added absolutely nothing to it. I didn't even taste it. And it was not made well. Some slices had about 3 tiny rounds of Pepperoni, with big blank areas with nothing on it. Others slices would have 3 pieces stacked up. If they had taken time to place the Pepperoni correctly, I would have had one in every bite. Rockys $77 filet was overcooked a little. He ordered med rare, it was closer to med. It was 10 minutes before our server came back to check on our meal so he ended up eating it anyway. The frites were really good. Cut in a large julienne, fried in tallow. Crisp on the outside, tender to the point of creamy on the inside. Very good! I usually don't take the time to write reviews but we want to see restaurants be successful. We spend a lot of money each month in casual and fine dining restaurants. We are foodies. I've been to culinary school and have had a career in the restaurant industry. I know how important and significant customer service is to the success of an establishment. Poor hospitality/customer service will make or break a restaurant especially at Hawk & Huck prices! Unfortunately, in our opinion, service at Hawkeye & Huckleberry is broken. We won't go back unless we hear there's been a retraining of staff and improvement in customer service. Like every Bend restaurant, food is priced 20% higher than any other urban city for same or less quality. $48.00 for 4"x4" piece of salmon with no sides? We came with a big group and someone's Santa Maria skirt steak was so tough and chewy it was completely inedible and sent back. Manager did comp another dish and apologized saying they have had issues with that dish. Appreciate the honesty but why keep it on the menu or maybe get a new chef? Other than that, everything else was great and service very good. Just know you're paying extra for the ambiance and speak up if something not prepared right. read more

This place has some great decorations inside. Everything is clean, and the staff is very friendly. My favorite part are the yurts or tents that they have for larger parties. Very fun. So I went here with a group of friends and we immediately greeted, and promptly seated. We ended up having an appetizer of the cornbread. The cornbread was yummy. I think it was a skillet cornbread, because it had this wonderful almost pancake style consistency, with a yummy soft interior. The herb butter that they served it with was not needed. In fact I wish they would've just given me honey butter. I ordered the short ribs and also the grilled seasonal veggies. The grilled seasonal veggies were perfectly cooked, a pretty good portion, and very fresh. They had cheese on them, and who doesn't like veggies with cheese? The short ribs were wonderful. It was a tender and juicy pork rib served in a flavorful stewed sauce on top of some mashed potatoes. For me the portion size was just right especially after eating the cornbread. They mashed potatoes were creamy and delightful and just wonderfully prepared. Then the not so good part. We had the banana cream "pie". We were all pretty full, but decided to split this one dessert. Between the four of us none of us wanted to eat it. It was basically an overly sweet banana pudding with chunks of banana, cinnamon, and a torched meringue on top. The dessert was literally sugar for no reason. I hate wasting food, but this was so bad that nobody in my party would eat it. Trust me, just skip this one. The second thing to be aware of is that this place is loud and dimly lit, so just beware. The people I was with had to pass around glasses to see the menu. This place does have live music, but the night that I went did not have loud music and I could barely hear the people I was with. Again, not something that would stop me from going, just something to be aware of if you don't like loud places. All in all this is a good place. Just avoid the banana pudding "pie". read more

Went here for Happy Hour with the ladies. Had a very tiny tostada. I consumed about when I realized there were dark hairs on my plate. Gross. Brought it to the attention of our waitress. I'll start with my one and only complaint- it's a little too noisy and the music too loud. That's the only negative. Now to the positives: Caesar salad- best ever. My wife got the salmon- unreal. I got the 6 ounce filet. It was the best steak I've ever had. The crust was spot on. Seasoned perfectly and the sauce was delicious. The desserts were world class. We adored this restaurant! The decorations for Christmas and New Year's Eve were beautiful. There's so many fun spots in this space to sit comfortably and feel right at home. The servers were all very nice and attentive. One thing I strongly recommend is making reservations ahead of time. We came New Year's Eve at 4:30pm and unfortunately got sat in the back room, still cute but definitely quiet and out of the entertainment area. However, we also had the baby so, it was almost meant to be so baby can sleep. Go for the cocktails! All of them are so tasty! They have prod fix menus of 5 courses, but they can also serve a plate a la carte. We snacked on the jalapeño cornbread and that was really good! While the restaurant is designed well and has a fun energy the experience is below lackluster. I was very excited for a Malarkey restaurant to open in Bend having visited his San Diego establishments and hoped that our restaurant in Bend would have the same quality. After three visits, I can say there is a lot of room to improve. Each visit we had to send back at least one thing at our table. For a restaurant that prides itself on local beef, they should know how to cook a steak. This is probably the biggest issue for us, some of the steak will be medium rare, other parts well done or rare. I am not sure what they are using but it's consistently inconsistent. The drinks themselves are fine but significantly overpriced for a batched cocktail. I really wanted to love this place but if you want a quality meal and good service, I'd save your money and go to Bar RBC, Bos, RBC or even Hook & Plow (a bit more casual and just across the street). If you're looking for something that fits your Instagram aesthetic then go for it, they definitely have trendy down. read more

We were seated promptly and got drinks ordered right away. They have a great selection on drinks and the entire staff was hustling the entire time we were there. Unless you're looking to spend $$$ on a dinner and gamble if the food is good, I recommend other restaurants. This was our third time at Hawkeye & Huckleberry, and most likely our last. I believe in giving a place a few tries before forming my opinion. Drinks are good; but will run you $16-20 for a cocktail. prices are available on their website, so no surprises there. Where the disappointment lies is in the value of the food. I planned to order the 12oz NY strip ($65, no sides) the server recommended the 14oz NY strip straight from their local ranch, one of their specials. She insisted it was well worth the upgrade ($80, no sides). Grass fed and finished on hemp. I was very disappointed in what I ended up with. The steak was served pre-sliced, lacked any depth of flavor, and was overcooked (medium rare is what I ordered). It's not just being disappointed in the food. It's ordering a steak from a place that boasts about their meat and charges $80 only to serve something that wouldn't pass the bar at your local diner. My wife chose the hot honey fried chicken, which was good. My son had a kids pizza, which was good, although very big for a kid size. No complaints there, everyone loves leftover pizza. Our appetizers, beef carpaccio and pork belly, were also good. My suggestion would be to go during happy hour, or maybe just go somewhere else entirely. Bend has no shortage of great restaurants. Our bill was $247 for food and drinks, and I can think of many places I could spend that money and walk away very happy. Hawkeye and Huckleberry is not one of them, unfortunately. read more
