We found Hayashi through the ever so helpful Yelp App. We stopped on in Saturday around 5p and it wasn't that busy yet. However, they looked very over-staffed (4-5 servers?) for a smaller sushi bar. At any rate, we started off with calamari tako (octopus) - which was more like tempura than a traditional calamari. It was still good, but I think there just needs to be that clarification. As for the rolls, we ordered 6 kinds - I probably won't remember all of them but of the ones I remember having were crunch, spicy scallop, unagi, Philly-variation, and California (see photo). All were really good and there wasn't one that I disliked. The service we had was pretty decent - no complaints. The main server (older lady) checked in on us and our water was replenished when needed. It isn't the best sushi I've ever had - but it was totally fine. read more

I went here with my husband a little less than a week ago for a date night. As a sushi junkie I was severely disappointed. The few rolls (salmon avocado, California, ikigai, unagi) were rather tasteless and bland. The salon actually looked like fresh poultry (chicken or something of the sort). It was pale pink in color (see image). Unlike typical fresh salmon (darker pink/reddish/blush) and the consistency was off too. The ebi shumai was good, a bit too sticky though. I have been going to Hayashi for years. Whenever, I have a craving for Japanese strip steaks, sushi, or Udon that is my go-to place. Excellent Food, Excellent Service, and Excellent Ambiance. I would highly recommend this Japanese steak house. They go out of their way to serve their customers. I felt very safe coming here during this pandemic. My daughter loves sushi and while running an errand she asked for her favorite meal. I was hesitant but we came and felt at peace soon as we arrived. The hostess was attentive, took our temperatures and everyone was masked. We were seated in a clean well spaced area and served promptly and with a friendly atmosphere. The food is 10/10 in quality and presented just beautifully . My family and I went here on Mother's Day because I wanted sushi. We were in the area, and decided to go here. I have never eaten here before, so I didn't know what to expect. My husband and I enjoy eating sushi, and we get sushi at least two-three times a month at a different restaurant. The rolls here are quite small, and fell apart easily. Parts of my sushi literally broke off when I dipped it in soy sauce, which left big chunks of sushi in my soy sauce. For the price of each roll, it's not worth coming here. The service here is alright. My son noticed that my daughter had something in her water. I looked at it and it was a foreign object. I showed my husband who then proceeded to show our server. She told us that it was a piece of their ice machine that had broken off into her cup. She told us that the piece from the ice machine wasn't dirty. My daughter drank the water with that broken piece in it. Ever since then, she has had a stomach bug for the past two days. Our server could have offered us something for free or at least a percentage off our bill, but she thought a new cup of water would just suffice. What a way to celebrate Mother's Day right? We will not be going back here, and we definitely won't be recommending this place to family and friends. read more

my favorite sushi spot for sure! everything i've ordered here tastes delicious, and the service is always pretty fast despite the restaurant typically being full when i've been there. the miso soup they serve is better than most others i've had, and i always love trying different items on the menu! the sashimi appetizer has a wonderful selection of fish and i would recommend a single roll to try but i can't even choose between the ones i've had because they're all so good!! overall, definitely takes the place for my favorite spot to get sushi and i would definitely recommend it to any sushi lovers in the area:) read more

I rarely suggest sushi as a dinner idea. It's so rare, in fact, that when I do, my husband seizes the moment and is nearly out the door before I've finished my sentence. It sounded really good tonight and after a brief debate of the local options, we landed at Hayashi. We've been here a few times and really enjoy it. The prices are reasonable for the portions, the fish is good, and the service is pleasant. I started with the miso soup tonight because I needed to warm up after a frigid drive to the restaurant. It was hot and flavorful -- and at less than $2.00, it's a bargain of a starter. I ordered the California roll and the tuna avocado roll. Both were tasty with an abundance of avocado and other fresh ingredients. My husband, the more adventurous in the relationship, ordered the chef's special sushi platter and devoured everything on the plate in record time. Wait, that's not true. He left something on the plate because he wasn't sure what it was -- our server was kind enough to show him how to eat it before she cleared the plates. My only complaint was that we were seated next to the front windows and it was freezing throughout the meal. But it's also January in northern Illinois so I expect that to some extent. read more

This is one of those, "I can't believe I never reviewed this place" kind of moments.... I used to come here a million years ago (yup, 1 million) and I will say this, not much has changed. Still no online menu, prices went up but the rolls are pretty much the same. The sushi isn't spectacular, but this is one of few choices up here. My thoughts on this place: * Spicy tuna is tasty, comes with 5 pieces inside out (see my pic) * Higher priced rolls are really not worth it, not enough fresh fish to warrant the $ * Spicy mayo on the side for $1 is a great decision * Bento box used to be my go to, but it's coming in at like $17 for the lunch special, eek! This is one of a handful of good Japanese restaurants in Gurnee. Having been around the longest, it has a regular following and can get kind of crowded. In addition to the fact that I just like it, there are many Japanese patrons in this place. I always take that as a good sign. Over the years, I've enjoyed Unagidon, Chirashi, Bento Boxes, Sushi plates and more. They are all quite good. The owners are always helpful and friendly. I like their Kaiso (seaweed) salad and their Miso soup. There are a decent selection of cold and warm sakes, as well as my favorite Pilsner Kirin the dragon beer. Lately, I've been trying some of the rolls and they are very inventive and rather spectacular. Prices are moderate. If they had tootsie rolls or mints on the way out for after dinner, I'd be even happier about the place. read more

You can imagine how stoked i was when i read on Yelp that this is a good place for sushi... I would have never found it on my own, but it was well worth it!! I didn't even bother looking for another place and went there again for dinner 2 nights in a row. Its a pretty small place so it gets filled out quickly, the service is usually very prompt and the rolls as simply delicious. Great combination of flavors on their special rolls. Only reason they didn't get a 5 stars is one of their rolls was a fail for me (can't remember the name right now) but it was full of raw fish and it was so large that it fell apart and could not be eaten as presented. I've been here a few times and it is a little pricey but food is good. The sushi rolls we picked on other reviews recommendations. Bloody Tuna Roll was very good. Great flavor, good kick, and we love siracha. The Sky Roll, the horseradish was surprisingly good. We don't usually care for it but the Roll was really good and the sauce was perfect. We've had a few other rolls that were very tasty. Calamari app was kinda bland and small, tempura was good but the veggies were not as good. Service was great, clean and friendly. Came here with my best friend for my birthday and boy, was that a bad idea! As soon as we walked in, the waitress was completely rude and didn't greet us at all. She looked at us and said "you can sit anywhere". We're like.... okay then... In my head, I already knew it was going to be a bad experience just because of the waitress' attitude and rudeness toward us. We didn't get any water while we were looking at the menu either. When she finally came back 10 minutes later, she just had a stank ass attitude that ruined the whole experience. We ordered our food and she just walked off. Girl, if you hate your job- do something else! You sure as hell aren't going to make any money being there. We ended up walking out shortly after she took our orders. I have ate here 10-12 times over the years and it has always been very good. I would rate previously a 4. The last time was not good at all (1). Sushi was not it's usual.
