I was not overly impressed with this restaurant. My friend's glass of water had a lipstick print on the rim when she received it. When she told the waitress, she was just given a new cup, no apology. The pizza was decent, however, the crust on one of the them was burnt in spots. We found a hair in one of the pizzas. We sat outside and could smell sewer, which was disgusting. Overall, the service was ok, though we felt rushed to leave and the pizza wasn't anything special. It was fancy and expensive without living up to expectations. read more

Delish gem in this small town. We went on a Tuesday and they were busy already. We had the octopus appetizer and the scallops. Both were very flavorful but the scallops were RIDICULOUS! Super refreshing with a bit of heat... I wanted more! We had the whole fish and ribeye which were also really really good. The waitress was so warm and friendly and let us sample a few of the red wines since we couldn't decide on one. The finale was the sourdough bread putting which was also another great dish. I love that for a small quiet town this restaurant did not hold back. Great job! Best part was that we left feeling that we actually did not pay an arm and a leg for a three course meal with a glass of wine. read more

Went here for my first time for restaurant week. Our reservations were at 7 place was almost full. To start we ordered soup, and asparagus salad, main course we both ordered chicken and for desert we had a strawberry pie and a hazel Sunday. Took about 20 mins to get the soup and salad. The soup was BARELY warm and didn't really taste very good was pretty bland. The salad was really good despite the amount of olive oil they poured over it. Then we waited......... 50 mins goes by no one comes to our table. We had to flag our server down to ask about our chicken. He tells us we were the last ones to order so we are getting our food slow. Either way being left at a table for 50 mins with no service is bad. Chicken finally came out and the whole plate was again BARELY warm and also had about an inch of oil sitting in the plate. I'm assuming our food sat for a little before getting to our table. Next was desert luckily we didn't wait to long for it but my strawberry pie was pretty cold (was very disappointed) there were pieces of it that were kind of warm but even the ice cream wouldn't melt on it. PIE's are meant to be warm/hot! The hazel sundae was okay, really filling couldn't eat the whole thing. So my rating goes based off the service and food quality. Service was really slow and our server didnt really come by our table and or even ask why we were there (me and the bro are foodies) The food most of it was cold :( tasted good but cold and very oily. My husband and I went here already disappointed the last restaurant in the location had closed. We were willing to give it a try though. Once we went in it was so hot inside we couldn't possibly stay so we sat on the tiny patio. I am usually a very cold person and was disappointed at how hot it could be inside the restaurant. I was pregnant and rarely ate steaks so I decided to get the ribeye. I figured it was a nice place so they must do a great job cooking it. Safe bet. It was a great steak but instead of coming out medium it was rare. Luckily my husband ordered a pizza which was fantastic and we traded meals so I could eat. My husband also had the scallops appetizer and absolutely loved it. I couldn't try any raw seafood but it looked amazing. Their wine selection looked good. I will definitely return since the menu does seem to change daily and I would love to give it another try. I am hoping I can grab a cocktail and more to eat without my food restrictions next time. If my steak had been cooked correctly or the dining room a temperature that had been comfortable to eat in it would have been five stars! read more

My boyfriend & I stopped in for brunch on Sunday and were pleasantly surprised by the amazing food we had. We started with the Beignets, which were absolutely perfect and that's saying something since most places make an attempt to do them but never come close. I then chose to try the BLT&E which came with roasted potatoes that were just as delicious as the sandwich. My boyfriend had the French toast that was covered in fresh raspberries & strawberries & lightly powdered sugar. And a side of bacon and he said that every bite was very good! the portion sizes are enough that we could have split something but I was more than happy to take the other half of mine home and enjoyed it again for dinner! We both agreed that we will be back again soon and are looking forward to trying their dinner menu. Hazel is a great addition to Occidental and I wish them much success! read more

My husband and I were staying in Bodega Bay and got to experience Hazel's our last evening, and it was Excellent! The staff was very friendly and always attentive to make sure we had whatever we needed (even as we were sitting outside). The food was fantastic! We weren't feeling 100% so we asked to split the pot roast and they brought it out on two separate plates for us! Which was beautifully displayed. We also had their seasonal blackberry crisp which was perfect! All in all, if you are looking for GREAT food, a kind, accommodating staff and VERY reasonable prices, please try out Hazel. If I could give this 4 1/4 stars I would. The food and service was terrific. Literally everything we ordered was better than the last. We would go back in a heartbeat. We had the bread and oh - so good! Then the fried brussels sprouts, again, a winner! My only disappointment was that I had heard how delicious the desserts were and saved room for what I was hoping would be a spectacular end to the evening. This was my fourth time dining here and the food continues to be delicious. The standout dish was the mushroom pizza. The chef makes a mushroom tapenade and spreads it all over the bottom instead of a tomato sauce so you get this mouthful of rich mushroom flavor in every bite. Then a generous amount of sautéed mushrooms on top, topped with a chunk of brie on each slice and just to go over the top, a nice drizzle of truffle oil, really good. Consistently delicious, Hazel has a surprisingly upscale menu in the small town of Occidental. Favs are mushroom pizza, Little Gems salad (vegan! Hello nutritional yeast Caesar dressing yum) and anything seafood- they do well. read more

We're always wary of going to a recently-opened restaurant, it always seems that there are some bugs to work out. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the service at Hazel. They were completely filled up, and still everything at our table went smoothly. I had a delicious little gems salad with a very light and tasty yogurt dressing, followed by a wood-fire pizza (pepperoni). The pizza was perfect, and I'm really looking forward to getting take-out there. We have missed a good wood-fire pizza ever since Forchetta closed in Sebastopol. There was a minor snafu with dessert (they ran out after we ordered one of them), but what they were able to offer was very tasty, especially the Santa Rosa plum crisp. The noise issue, which existed with Bistro des Copains, is still there. We were lucky enough to sit near the door, and so not totally surrounded by noise. It's a problem that I doubt that they will be able to solve. We will definitely be back. read more

We live in Sebastopol and loved Le Bistro des Copains . We were very pleased with their successor, Hazel . Bad news first ( but there is good news ) - the place was noisier than I ever remember . So we ate outside . Which was very pleasant . - the menu is a bit sparse . I mean : where is the rabbit ? The trademark of Le Bistro des Copains . Good news The food was outstanding . So nice to find a menu with not deep fried octopus. The octopus starter was so delicate and so well balanced . My husband had a fabulous simple pizza. Great thin crust and wonderful fresh topping . I had a risotto, very complex , filled with great vegetables and subtle surprises . The wine list is a bit expensive . I would like to see a free corkage on a weekday for local wine as the Bistro des Copains used to offer . Hazel has big shoes to fill but I am confident that they will succeed . We were staying at The Inn at Occidental and did a walk-in, though reservations are recommended. My husband had read Yelp reviews and wanted to try Hazel's but we were not sure if our schedule and did not want to make reservations in advance. Brussels sprouts should be shared with a table of four. Way too much for the two of us. Wish they had a smaller size available as an option. The mushroom pizza was perfect to split for two. We entered Hazel and received some odd looks from the wait staff and other patrons. Not sure if the side glances were because we entered a bit later in the evening or what but it was awkward. In all, the four of us felt something, and it was not the feeling of an abundant welcome. We opted to start with the grilled octopus which was sold out, so we settled with the scallops. I don't care for scallops, but the others in the group thought they were spicy yet enjoyable. We then moved on to the asparagus pizza mainly because it had formage blanc and Calabrese peppers... it was flavorful but after sitting for the 20 minutes while we ate our fish it turned into a cracker with stuff on it. The lowlight of the meal came with our main course the whole fish Branzino. Plated beautifully and surrounded by assorted veggies, the dish was picture perfect. I literally insta storied it immediately (but then deleted it)! I served myself a small bit and found a small bone here and there, which is expected with fresh fish. Now the not great part and reason why the place received two stars is that only half of the fish was scaled. I literally took a bite not realizing this and swallowed some scales while spitting others out on my plate. I felt the weirdest sensation in my throat, and an hour later my throat is still not feeling so great. Everyone in our quartet was having this issue. We didn't know whether to tell our waitress, but I decided to do so because I would hate to have another patron experience this. Our waitress's response was nothing short of lame telling me that this is how the fish is prepared and getting a bit defensive... never apologizing or thanking us for the feedback. This is an amazingly quaint lovely yummy restaurant. It's expensive but let's just say you get what you pay for and it's worth it. I ordered the chicken and I think I got a farm!! It was tasty tender flavorful goodness me!! Hubby had pizza and it was really good. They have take out too! The only think with the pizza is when he picked up his first slice the toppings slid off. Whoops!! So knife and fork worked it was still delish. I had a cider from a local company and it was fantastic. Our waitress was exceptional and she was the owner. Also she used to be the pastry chef for one of my fave eateries in Berkeley. She told me the place is still good even without her. I loved the style and the smiles at Hazel. It's so great. Got this as take out after a day of hiking and driving through various Sonoma Coast State Park beaches - could not have asked for a better end to a wonderful day! Walked in and ordered to go on a Saturday around 6, and it was ready in 20 min. Sourdough and the pizza with local blue cheese were great - but the pork ribs and Brussels sprouts were delicious and unique! So, so tasty - looking forward to visiting again when we are in town, and hope to be able to dine in in the future! read more

We really enjoyed our dinner the other night at Hazel. The restaurant is small and cozy with warm vibes. We started with the chopped salad which was different, but good. It had a lot of flavors going on which was a litttttle overpowering. We then had the brussels (AMAZING), and the cured scallops which were also really good. The scallops weren't what I was expecting, but I was not disappointed by any means. We also had the sausage pizza which was to die for. The crust was slightly charred, and the sauce was so fresh and simple. The sausage had a little bite to it, but not too spicy. It also had two farm eggs and arugula which was the perfect combination. The staff was so sweet and accommodating. Our waitress was a delight. She had perfect timing and was really on it. All in all, a a great place for a date night or even for a bigger group. Quaint little place that has about 12 tables inside. Farm to table and you can taste it. Had their pepperoni pizza and the crust immediately reminded me of the pizza I had in Italy. It was so light and airy. The sauce tasted like they had picked the tomato right after I ordered it. It was so fresh and light that I felt like I was eating health food instead of a pizza. This is always worth a stop or detour when you're driving through Sonoma wine country! I've done it twice and the beignets are worth every mile I have to drive. Yummy!!! And the homemade jam!!! We even carried back a couple to bottles back to Singapore. Their egg dishes are perfect for brunch, but I've had the pizza too and it's rustic and perfect for sharing.
