On 6-9-25 at approximately 11:35am, my friend and I walked into the Hazelwood Inn (bar side), The bar and restaurant both open at 11am. There was no one in the bar when we walked in. We laughed about how we would be able to get faster service since no one was in the bar. The waitress/bartender was at the other end of the bar with her phone in her hand. She did not move or address us when we walked in. After a couple of minutes she came over to us and asked if she wanted anything to drink. We both ordered beer. We had already discussed that we were going to get steamed shrimp. We ordered and I also asked for a cup of French onion soup. Other patrons came while we were waiting, We got our beers and waited for our food. 20 minutes the food had not arrived. Again the waitress/bartender was at the other end of the bar on her phone. I walked to the end of the bar and politely asked her if I could get my soup. She said no it had to be put in the oven and had to be bought out with the other food. I asker her to check on our food since this made no sense to me. I went back to my bar stool and waited. 5 -7 minutes later she brought out my soup, nothing else. We waited it was now way after 12pm and we still had not received our shrimp. Mind you other people came in and placed their drink and food orders. Finally about 12:15pm, a man came out and brought our shrimp. My friends and I frequent this restaurant often but the service on the bar side sucks. The waitress/bartenders don't smile and sometimes even give you that " why are you bothering me look" Nevertheless there is a 15% mandatory gratuity in the bar and 18% in the dining area . I was soooooo hungry this day and after switching locations , my dining companion and i decided to come here. I'd had food previously (on the bar side) and remembered it being pretty good. We decided to eat on the restaurant side since we weren't up for the Friday night crowd next door. We were seated right away which was great considering how hungry we were. My friend was a vegan/vegetarian at the time so the menu options for her were limited (she didn't want pasta or salad ). She wound up just eating fries. I got the crab cake with salad and fries. The crab cake seemed to have been premade and was kind of dry. Because i was so hungry i did not send it back but probably should have. Everything else was average . From the gate, not a good experience in the bar section on a Sunday. Restaurants have good and bad seasons, and Sundays around 3 to 4pm is a terrible season for Hazelwood Inn. Very rare do I feel moved to write a review for a dispassionate reason but I will be honest. Your best dining experience will be in the dining room (3.5 stars). The bar is short staffed and the customer service may leave much to be desired. Sadly, I am writing all of this 20mins into being in this restaurant and still not even knowing what my waitress'/waiter's face looks like.... I can smell food but I haven't even gotten a menu to see what kind of food I would like to eat. A waitress did come to the table to stare at us and complain about being short staffed-- she didn't take our orders. We don't even have water!! Waited 30min for a seat no problem, 35 ti 40 min before waitress acknowledged us and we were sitting at the table by there station so I ask her can I order and the response I got was negative. At this point I'm sure she's having a bad day and might be the problem but ok hour and a half still waiting for food. Oh 10min after the attitude I was asked what would I like to drink. I have been to the Hazelwood Inn several times. I was very nice and the food was as good as other competitors in the area. I have been there with a few people and also with large groups in the past. I recently visited the Hazelwood Inn on 10/25.2024 with a group. Along with us were family members from North Carolina. The food and service was so bad, one of the members from North Carolina ate very little to nothing from their plate. My wife and I arrived late and got our food to go. When I arrived home to eat my food it looked unappealing and the taste confirmed what it looked liked. I wasn't going back that night to take it back. My wife added other ingredients to make it eatable. On 10/26/2024, the next day, I called to speak to the manager about this experience. I was advised that the manager was in a meeting. I left my number for her to call me back. She never called. I called two more times and was told the same thing. I knew at that time that it was useless. I will also add that it's not family friendly. Don't take my word for it, experience it for yourself. The place smelled of marijuana every night that I have gone in the recent past. Yes, the food was, and I emphasize was competitive. Not anymore. I first noticed the decline the time prior to 10/25/24. I will never eat here again and will encourage my family to do the same. We came on the 4th of July looking for good food and crab cakes. It was a slow day and we received a lot of attention from the servers. As soon as we came in, we saw the different sangria options in the front entrance (strawberry peach, peach, and red) that looked inviting! We ordered the strawberry peach first thing. Since we're from out of town we needed some suggestions on what crab to get. I decided to go with the crab cakes (fried), steamed broccoli, and potatoes. I love true Maryland crab cakes! I ordered two jumbo crab cakes because they typically run small despite being advertised as jumbo but to my surprise they were TRUELY JUMBO sized. The portions were enough for two (yikes). Well, my first experience was not the best. First of arrived and door was locked and when the greeter was ask why? He answered for crowd control. I could think of so many things that could happen with a door locked of a eating establishment. The wait staff that waited on us was young and unconcerned. She wore all black and a black puffy coat. Anytime we needed something, we had to find her. My friend had to search for her to get boxes and to get the check. She appeared after he was furious. The food, was so so. I had the stuffed Alaskan salmon. But had issues throughout the night and the next morning. Let's say the food did not settle well. My friend had Catfish that was not cooked well. Well. I live nearby and don't get around there too much. Only a few times throughout the years. A coworker recently suggested that I try the crab dip. So I did tonight. A nice round container with warm bread. The soft warm bread was delicious. Unfortunately, the crab dip was horrible. A big bland container of cream cheese with little specs of what could've been crab meat. It was seasoned like crab meat but I honestly couldn't tell if crab was in there or not. My first childhood home was just down the street, so my brother and I went for a drive down memory lane. We decided to get lunch at Hazelwood Inn and were very pleased. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. My brother got the cheesesteak which he said was delicious. His girlfriend got a half Greek salad and it was large for a half size and fully loaded. I got the oysters Rockefeller and they were huge! I only ate two and took the rest home. My husband is now enjoying them for dinner. Was recommended to come here by many people. My sister and I came on a Friday night. My sister had beaten me here and I was running behind. The lot was almost packed so I parked in the back of the lot. I didn't feel the safest especially because the lighting on that part of the lot was not the greatest. They changed a $5 cover to get in. On top of that, they automatically charge a 15% gratuity on all orders. It was small and crowded and I could barely get to the bar. We managed to find a table after 45 mins of being there. It was only 930 and mostly everyone was drunk. I felt like I needed to catch up but I couldn't even get a bartender's attention. I managed to get 2 glasses of wine and settled on that for the night. The DJ kept playing the same songs over again which killed the mood to dance. The bathroom was small and gross. This place was recommended to me by some friends and I went to the Friday night lounge area located on the non dining side of the facility. Needless to say, I was not impressed. The environment was overcrowded and cramped. There was a DJ there for music, but the dance floor is hardly big enough for anything other than walking to your table. The fish tacos were the savior of this review getting one star. Maybe the dine in experience is better, but I'll take my money to another inn. like the Windsor. Honestly, this place depends on your tolerance. If you're a fan of cramped spaces with loud mediocre music on a Friday night, then give this place a go. First time customer on a lazy Monday evening around 7:30. Parking lot was full! No wonder, as I smelled seafood spices when I got out of the car. Ordered a jumbo lump crab cake (broiled) w/2 sides. French fries & grilled broccoli. $11.99 Wow! Big lumps of crab & the perfect balance of mayo, binder & spices. One of the best crab cakes I have ever had at a restaurant. Headed out to Hazelwood Inn for my wife's birthday last night. We've been customers here for 17 years and for the most part liked the food and the service, but noticed a decline in the quality of service over the last few years. We had reservations and when we arrived were seated promptly. I noticed coming in that there was a large party getting ready to be seated. All the wait staff was focusing on preparing the dining tables for this group. It took 20 minutes for our waitress to take our drink order, another 15 for bread to arrive and 10 more for our drinks, and we still hadn't ordered yet. We placed our order after being there for 50 minutes. It took another 20 for our salads to arrive. When dinner did finally arrive my "as rare as you can get it prime rib" looked gray and way over cooked. I had asked for sour cream and horseradish be brought with the meal and had to wait another 15 minutes for that to get there while waiting for another prime rib to arrive. The baked potato was served with the equivalent of cheese whiz all over it...... they used to use real shredded cheddar. Our waitress never came back to see if everything was OK after my replacement "meat" was delivered.....it came with grill marks so I suspect it had been replaced by a NY Strip but at least it was rare. The prime rib is slow roasted so their shouldn't have been any grill marks whatsoever. Did I mention that this was my wifes birthday? Yeah, I did. Mentioned it to the waitress and the lady who sat us when we came in too. So let's recount this trainwreck, lousy service, poor delivery time, no request for a second round of drinks or a question regarding satisfaction, no attempt to make this a festive event , hell we weren't even asked about cake until we'd paid the check and were heading for the door. It's sad to see a true neighborhood institution head down hill. But when you replace real cheese for cheez whiz on your baked potato, provide service as slow as our was, have servers who can't tell a well done prime rib from a rare one, and then question the customer and make no attempt to an event a nice one for a long time customer......it's time to stop going. I had the chance to visit Hazlewood for the first time. After listening to many people talking about the place, I was really looking forward to the visit. At least ten people in my group ordered Maryland crab soup. Unfortunately, there was no crab meat to be found in the soup. It was good vegetable soup. Located in the heart of Overlea, Maryland. This eatery attracts a very "diverse clientele" lol XD. Nevertheless the staff is very nice. If they seem distraught or irritated, pay attention to the customers they deal with, the clientele attracted probably adds to this. I've only ordered take out from here one time. The only complaint I have with the food was that the snow crabs are a little skimp, however still delicious. Pasta with Cajun chicken was good as well. I love this place for happy hour! They have it all day from 11am to 7pm everyday. The prices are not the best I've ever seen for happy hour, but they are reasonable the quality of food you get. I get the calamari! It's really the best I've ever had. The drink specials are nice too, though I often just come to eat. The servers are really nice and friendly and manage to keep up with checking on you even when its jam packed. They do automatically ad 15% gratuity to your bill, so make sure you prepare for that (even though you should prob be adding a little more on top of that). The only reason this place gets 4 and not 5 stars is because I wish they had more seating in the bar area and I wish the music was constant and you didnt have to pay a jukebox to hear some music!
