A great community staple offering vegan food, with soul and Caribbean influences. I've only been once recently, but know this place has been around for a while. I was pleasantly surprised to find food similar to the vegan juice bars in New York. Food was flavorful and hot. They offer a variety of things like curried chickpeas, unchicken, stewed pumpkin, collard greens, vegan Mac m cheese. They also have fresh juices and smoothies and a few premade options. Food is served from a steam table, where you choose from what is available and pay for your food at the counter. There are tables for seating, I however got my food to go. I felt the menu was a bit pricey so it's not something I'd get regularly but it's a nice treat when I want some guilt free vegan food. The 89 "Health Score" didn't include any violations of the "Standard not met: Insects, rodents, and animals not present" variety, so though I wasn't super stoked about the "89", I could suffer the other violations. The customer service was a little muted, but attentive and efficient (You may be best served with a little confidence and assertiveness in your ordering actions). The food BANGS, is good for you and plentiful...As long as your palette is Vegan-friendly/open you really can't go wrong with your selection. You might drive past it or think it's not open if you lack a bit of awareness, but it's there and their stationary food truck in the ample parking lot is a good marker, just in case there are initial questions about the non-descript location. Walking in just 20 minutes before closing, and was treated like I was the first customer of the day As a first time customer, they gave me a "tour" and explained everything in the steam table. Many non soy options, all authentic flavors. The smell alone was promising! I was also offered a sample of anything I wanted to try. I setlled for the curry veggie protein, channa (curry chick peas) and rice. I also took Irish Moss. I was so happy to find Irish Moss made with non dairy milk, I tried a flavor - Peanut. Everything was delicious and a good amount of food was served in a medium meal. My favorite vegan West Indian restaurant is over 40 minutes away and I was craving some good food. Healthful Essence has been on my list for a long time and until recently I didn't realize how close it was to me less than 15 minutes so I decided to stop in. Located off of York St in SW Atlanta in a very busy area known as the Vegan Mecca. There are so many vegan friendly places in walking distance or a few minutes drive. Everything looked delicious and I didn't know what to order. After some careful deliberation I ordered curried ungoat, Mac un-cheese, collard greens, and navy beans. I just love eating at a vegan restaurant that serves delicious food. I ate here years ago when I first moved to Atlanta and I have no idea why it's taken me almost 5 years to return... silly girl (lol). For a wet Saturday afternoon there was a steady line but the wait was minimal. There were so many vegan items to choose from but they unfish cakes caught my eye first, they looked so yummy. So when you walk in there's a hot food case with items to choose from and they also have special items in the back so make sure you ask. Pick up a food tray from below if you're thinking in. There's a white board with a handwritten menu with prices by the register and another menu with the unmeat items in the dining area. The server allowed me to sample a few items which I was very appreciative of; I ordered a medium plate with curry ungoat, mac n cheese, cabbage and a side of the fish cakes. *medium plate with "meat" and 2 sides $9.99 (i believe) * side fish cakes (2 per order) $3 * alkaline water $2 I was surprised by the portions, they were very large. I dined in so the items were on a plate. There's four medium size low tables in the restaurant and about 3 small high top tables. They also have a sofa for sitting. Food taste: everything was DELICIOUS, i cleaned my plate! The curry was nice and spicy, the mac n cheese was very flavorful, cheese was very creamy and it was hard to believe it was vegan. Best item was the fish cakes, so flavorful and crunchy; I was tempted to go and place another order. I definitely don't wait another 5 years to visit, I'm looking forward to my next visit. Oh yeah this is what I needed to eat. Wanted to get one of everything, but got the mock duck and the red beans, plantains, and a citrus cooler drink. THEN I got me one of those raw licorice roots and chewed on it....it was excellent. It's been years since I visited this shop. Popped by for a quick grab and go lunch. Parking is plentiful, staff is friendly and the food delicious, healthy and reasonably priced. The shop is small but there's enough table and seating. It wasn't full when I stopped by after 1 o'clock. Maybe I am jaded because I was starving and also sad they did not have mac and cheese (fri sat only) or the veggie lasagna (not sure when they make it) and just a little sad about not having what I wanted. When my taste buds want what what they want it is hard to compromise. I also tried the citrus cooler recommended by the man who took my order ( i will be better with names next time promise) but next time I will try the mango smoothie or one of the earthy drinks like green lemonade or the beet juice. (None of which we were able to taste before ordering). We may have taken 3 bites & trashed the rest. The food tasted old and lacked flavor. The server put un-fish patties on top of sides. So they were soaked in juice by the time we got back to our office. Kale in patties tasted old. Maybe we went on a bad day ...or bad time of day... but we don't plan to return. Whenever I'm in the West End, this is my go to place for delicious yumminess, love their un fish cakes, rice and peas of course, curry veggies..so good!, they also have really good collard greens too, now you know I gotta have dessert, I usually devour the carrot cake and from time to time I'll have the peach cobbler. This place offers delicious vegan food but is a bit hard to find. Easiest way is to locate the Goodwill then drive behind it. Healthful Essence is the parking lot directly adjacent. You can dine in on real plates and silverware or opt for the foam takeout. Either way, make it a point to pay the extra $1.99 and order the "stewed un-fish" as it is worth every penny. They offer a nice variety of cooked and raw options as well as fresh juices. It was great to find this in Atlanta and it easily made my top three places to eat during my visits. read more

Came across Healthful Essence on Yelp and while in Atlanta for the weekend I was like I must check this place out. Mainly for the following reasons: 1. It's a black owned business 2. It's Vegan 3. Not only is it vegan but it's Caribbean vegan (my family are Caribbean and Caribbean food has my heart) 4. Everything is made with fresh, natural produce and PH alkaline water is used for everything!!!! The food was AMAZING!! Hands down! I can honestly say everything was delicious and I guarantee you, non-vegans would enjoy the food just as much! It was difficult to find this place as the sign was not too visible. There's some work that could be done inside and outside but PLEASE do not let this deter you. When I arrived it was explained to me the different plates available and the owner (who's was really nice) gave me a sample of all the different "meats" to try before I buy. I wanted everything!!! Decided on the un-goat, jerk un-duck, Mac & cheese, curry vegetables, rice and peas and it came with plantain. I cannot express enough how good the food is...
