Went with my mom and a couple of friends to their Thanksgiving dinner when circumstances led us to go out rather than cook our own dinner. Our friends gave this place the thumbs up so we made a 5pm reservation. We arrived and were seated in the dining area occupied by only 2 other tables. Our server came over very pleasantly to bring our menus and informed us right away that there was not enough stuffing available to have as an extra side dish, only as part of the turkey dinner. Ok. We looked over the drink menu, ordered cocktails and told her we would just like to drink those then order our meal. For whatever reason she did not seem thrilled with that and her attitude changed from then on. We ordered a size of the biscuits to pick on first. There were only 2 in the order albeit large ones. They were not impressive, somewhat dry and cakey. Moving on I got the Butternut and Apple Bisque which was quite delicious Others ordered the same or the Champ Croquettes, 2 huge meatball like stuffed balls, also very tasty. For the main I wanted to order the Prime Rib which I saw on the menu as part of the meal but once there the menu was altered to tack on a $10 supplement for it and it came with no sides. No thanks. We all ordered the Turkey dinner, turkey was good not great thankfully not dry. Stuffing was not that good either, so disappointed. We were all full and asked to take home dessert. The "selection of pies" were pumpkin or apple. That's it. Again, we arrived at 5pm to a near empty restaurant. Our friends asked for the apple pies and Mom and I asked for pumpkin. She was gone for about 15 minutes and gave us 2 separate bags. My friends checked their bags and got the apple pies so you would think that meant we got pumpkin right? Nope. Later that night I opened it to find 2 crumbled almost unrecognizable apple pie slices that tasted just how they looked, they went right in the garbage. Huge disappointment for such a special day. This was always a regular spot for us but we keep Trying to go back and it's always disappointing. The cocktails aren't the same as they used to be and neither is the food. They used to have one of the best burgers - now they are average. I hope they can get back into their groove soon. read more

A must visit gastropub in Bergen County. This is a great upscale restaurant with unique menu items and creative drinks. The food is outstanding: tender meats, creamy pasta sauces, fresh ingredients. The crispy brussel sprouts are a must try and their flat breads are really great to share with friends. I've had the short rib entree several times and I've never been disappointed. After dinner you can sit at in the bar in their smoke room and enjoy a cigar. Their humidor has a variety to chose from (or you can bring your own) and their smoke system keeps the air in the room smoke free, which is a big plus for nonsmokers. In the spring and summer you can enjoy your meal on their beautiful patio. Definitely one of our favorite places in the area and we look forward to many more delicious meals there. read more

The staff was incredibly welcoming to accommodate a large party. (Reservations made 2 weeks in advance) They arranged the tables into a circle to accommodate our group of 20. I am very happy with the changes made to The Porter House. This is a way cooler hang out spot now. I did not check out the smoking section, instead I stopped by the bar area. The interior is very nice, kinda feels like I was sitting in someones living room. They have a good selection of craft beer on tap, not amazing. I came here after I already ate dinner, so I wasn't so hungry, so I shared the small plate of meatballs with a friend. I always say you can judge a place by its meatballs, and these were amazing. Tender, juicy, seasoned perfectly, paired with a very rich sauce and crunchy bread for dipping. I could eat these all night. After eating the meatballs, I will be back to try everything on the menu. The prices are not cheap, but it seems you are paying for quality, farm to table style food. Our waiter was very friendly, and he was very enthusiastic about the new change and food menu. I've had this spot bookmarked forever. So on this beautiful sunny Sunday I decided to take a drive to Montvale (which I love to do). I stopped in for lunch and sat outside. The outdoors seating is lovely, pretty sea blue tables, flowers trimming the deck, and an awesome fireplace. I love the stone and brick surrounding as well. Now lets get to the goods. I was contemplating between two cocktails and two flatbreads of their menu. The waitress (which I think was either the hostas or manager) was super helpful. I ended up going with her suggestions of the Don's side car and the farm eggs and pork belly flatbread. Two amazing choices I must say. Personally side cars is my favorite cocktail and this one had a twist, it was made with rum with an organe curacao instead of the cognac and marnier. I liked it alot, it was more of a summery twist to the original side car. The farm eggs and pork belly flatbread was delicious. Only thing I would change is that I wish the pork belly was a bit crispy instead of just sauteed. Pork belly is amazing crispy and i think it would have made the flatbread like 100 times better but overall I did enjoy it. The beemster gouda cheese was very sharp which I enjoyed alot. Definitely will be coming back. Probably eat inside and check that out as well as other libations and yummy food. read more

Came here for some early afternoon drinks and snacks today with my wife. Place was half empty. I just anticipated an average Yelp 3.5-star pub with average food, friendly service, and staff that hopefully paid attention to whether my pint was empty. We sat at the non-smoking bar near the pizza oven. Music was nice (80s vibe), warm decor, not thrilled about sitting next to a bunch of pizza boxes, but we aren't snobs. It was fine. Then I was confused. We felt like the invisible couple. No one bothered to take our order, even though someone came to take the second round of drinks order from the table behind us. 20 minutes went by. It's as if they intentionally didn't want to acknowledge we were in the room. I actually walked to the kitchen door and had to ask, "what do I need to do to get some service?" A woman who was pretty busy serving the main dining room came to help us. So the deviled eggs were good enough, tasted like they were prepared the night before and were pulled out of the fridge. The beet salad was tiny but tasty. My beer was good and my wife's glass of sauvignon blanc was poured generously. Then we were ignored again. Other tables were being served, just not us. So I waved down another waitress I saw. Asked if I could have a refill. She walked away without answering. In a deeper voice I asked if I could have a refill. She said, "Yeah I'm getting it!" 20 minutes passed and nothing. I was pretty annoyed at this point. Asked our pizza guy to find our waitress. He disappears for 10min. Our waitress who took our food order came by. I told her I was annoyed and didn't want my second beer anymore and for the check. Then found there was something on my tab I never ordered. She then was apologetic and took both drinks off our bill. I will not come back here. I appreciate the apologies and the bill adjustment, but people don't go out to places just to be greeted with sh*t service. I wasn't expecting much and you fell well short of my low expectations. This pub is decorated very nicely for the holiday season. You can tell they put in the effort to make it seasonal. Menu was not your average pub choices. I ended up having 2 appetizers as a meal. I ordered skillet Mac and cheese and tempura cauliflower. Skillet Mac and cheese was good but not exactly "skillet" I expected it to be a little different. Cauliflower tempura was ok, I didn't realize they're would be so much blue cheese on top. Again I was expecting something different. I would go back and try drinks and an entree. Extremely cozy and just screams, 'autumn'. I went for a work lunch more recently because another restaurant we wanted to go to was closed. It turned out to be a great decision. I had a Cobb salad which was better than average. Everyone else had sandwiches that looked really good. Also, the appetizer Brussels sprouts would be something I would just come back for by themselves. Hey Yelp? When are are going to get to start rating 1\2 STARS?! Located in a quiet, woodsy, suburban part of north NJ, it is strictly a local place or a destination meal.... Great atmosphere and decorated warmly, the building has an interesting history. H&T offers various dining rooms, including a large outdoor patio and a designated indoor smoking room too. The staff we dealt with were very pleasant and informative. The bar as an excellent selection of craft beers and specialty cocktails, with over 70 brands of whiskey I absolutely loved the La Louisiane, which is a whiskey based drink as well as the HATCO Old Fashioned: Brown Sugar, James E. Pepper 1776 Straight Rye & Sassafras. THE FOOD: We tried\shared quite a bit of small plates and Apps: --Char grilled Spanish octopus: tahini-chickpea puree, oil cured olives, shisito peppers, chili oil..... a great version of one of my favorite dishes. I try it everywhere. --HATCO stuffed champ croquettes: rasher bacon, wexford cheddar, spring onions, Jameson Gaelic gravy....this was very good, nice presentation. --Avocado ciabatta toast: maldon salt, lemon olive oil, pea shoots, black sesame, shaved breakfast radish......OK, I've seen this item pop up on menus all over starting in 2017..never had it before.I eat avocado all the time at home...toast too...why order it out??? An avocado freak's dream (LOL), but just a little too much ...1 piece per person is enough --FLATBED PIZZAS, we tried 2: --Bee Sting flatbread: Candied Neuske's bacon, chili honey, mozzarella, claremont farm oregano...this was my favorite. the sweetness of the honey, the heat of the chili, served with REAL bacon...YUM --Brian boru flatbread: wexford cheddar, vidallia onion crudo, Maloney's banger sausage.....this was good, just not as flavorful as it sounded. no sharpness from the cheddar...the bangers were kind of plain more like a hot dog...and just remember the term " crudo" that has recently been tossed around a lot with meat, fish, & veggies.....it means RAW...that's it.....just RAW. Entrees were to share, the Bee Sting Flatbread (which was amazing!) and the wedge salad (perfection!) but the reason for only 3 stars is this: They charge $15-$17 for their specialty cocktails and only fill a rocks glass HALF WAY UP!! Like, WTF?!?? If I'm paying that much, FILL UP MY GLASS!!! Also- be fore warned they up charge if you are paying with a credit card! We stopped her based off a recommendation from a friend. Brussel sprouts were really good actually super heavy and pretty sweet I did have the pancetta removed as I don't eat meat. I didn't a chance to try the breaded cauliflower although I wanted to. The golden beet salad was really good and my favorite thing was that the walnuts didn't have the sugar coating most do in salads. So much better without that coating. We also tried the portobello with truffle oil flatbread and it was really good. It was also much bigger than I expected. Everything was a pretty large serving. My better half had the chicken pot pie which he absolutely loved and ate the whole thing. It was not small and he was in a food coma the rest of the nite. I'm sure the craft beers didn't help. The craft beer list a bit weak. I'd like to see some better picks. Most of the beers were pretty ordinary and I'm not sure Smithwicks is really craft. Mehh selection. The drinks however were really good and fun. I got a paloma rita and it was awesome. I also got a Bombay lavender Collins and that was also awesome. We didn't have room for dessert but they definitely were not from a premade bindi box. If we weren't stuffed we would have gone for it. They did have paper straws which is awesome!. I'm from Montvale, but this was the first time I had come to this location since I was a kid in the mid-90's. This is the former McDonald's Steakhouse/Porterhouse on Kinderkamack. Service was awesome, food was pretty good. We ordered a steak pot pie, a pork milanese, and a hangar steak with spinach, fries sides. Started with octopus and croquettes. The steak was really tough and the house steak sauce was overpowered with vinegar. My friends enjoyed their pork milanese and steak pot pie. I wish I went with a pot pie. The menu is loaded with small plate options. Instead of my steak, I wish I went with a bunch of apps or a pot pie (but, pot pie is a winter dish in my opinion). Our most recent go to meal is the 16 ounce strip steak and truffle potato beams. I assure you, this is the best steak in New Jersey. A note to music lovers, as we are. There is a juke box that you can play your favorite tunes. Be ware if management doesn't like your selections they will skip over it or like we had happen yesterday, stop it mid song. I asked management for a refund since the majority of my $10 choices were not played. The were kind enough to refund my money. However, it managed to ruin an otherwise perfect evening. read more

God I miss the Porter House. I have been anxiously awaiting to try the new Hearth and Tap and finally got to try it out last week. I am very happy that you can still smoke inside and that nothing about the actual restaurant has changed but the food. With that being said I was able to try three menu items that caught my eye. I tried the appetizer meatballs, brussel sprouts and the mac and cheese with short rib. The mac and cheese being the highlight of my experience over all but the brussels being a very close second. The mac and cheese was extremely creamy and delicious and the hunk of short rib really took it to a whole new level. I also really liked that they use spiral pasta for a different texture and it held the cheese sauce really well. The brussel sprouts were crisp and delicious and had little bits of pancetta that added a nice flavor over all. The sauce that they were coated in added a nice little kick of heat as well. The meatballs were ok but I'm Italian and nothing will ever compare to my grandmothers meatballs so my opinion of them really shouldn't be taken into consideration. The service over all was very attentive. I will definitely have to come back and try more of their menu items to give a better review over all. I have heard great things about their flatbreads and I look forward to testing those out. read more

Came here a couple of times when it was The Porter House, but I'm glad it's changed. The Menu is totally interesting and although there is still a spot to smell like smoke, it seems the atmosphere has become more sophisticated. Ordered the brussel sprouts which I never thought I'd do, but the table next to us was eating them and they looked to die for. They were. Charred and delicious, and the pancetta was a perfect accompaniment. Also had the burrata. YUM. HAKUNA BURRATA. It means no worries. Look it up if you don't believe me. For dinner I had the short rib pot pie. SMOKING hot, but once it started to (eventually) cool off, so tasty and homey. Hearth and Tap has excellent food and great service. Hadn't been here since it was The Porter House. We sat in the upstairs room, which was nice and cozy and had some other tables of guests but still almost felt like a private dining experience. The pork belly app was delish as was the burger. We also had a buffalo chicken flatbread which was also well done. The only downside (which may not be a downside to all) is that the main bar is a cigar bar, so you may smell like it if you get to close or definitely will if you go in there. However, they keep the doors to that area closed so it really doesn't seem like a big deal at all. They also have a nice outdoor patio which is great in the warmer months. read more

3.5: We arrived at 7:45 on a Thursday evening and discovered that all of the parking is valet. Not worth it so we parked in the shopping complex next door. When you walk in, you can smell the cigars, which apparently is OK here because they were grandfathered into the law...but I didn't love it. The bar was full, so we stood around for 20-25 minutes. The food was pretty good and seemed to have variety. The crispy brussels sprouts were tasty, but it could have been a little crispier; the puffed rice added a good crunch, and the pork belly nuggets gave it good flavor. I didn't really love the flatbread pizza with mushrooms and arugula - the edges were burned. The arugula seemed to be just placed on it but not fully integrated into the flatbread. Slow-braised short ribs were hearty and flavorful. Of the desserts, the apply crisp was good. I wouldn't recommend the rice pudding (a little bit bland) and only filled less than half a Mason jar - not the greatest plating. Overall: food/service adequate (if you're called a gastropub, I expect to be astounded!). Didn't blow me out of the water and it's not cheap or the best atmosphere. read more

The food was decent, nothing mind blowing at all. the GIANT shrimp cocktail was 4 medium 41-50 per lb shrimp on greens, cocktail sauce was super hot, our brussels sprouts side $14 was VERY spicy, and the sprouts were undercooked and hard to chew. All vegetables were cooked under, and hard to chew, steak ordered by 1 person was fatty, and there was a $10 surcharge, 1/3 was discarded. Turkey was okay, nothing great about any of the flavors in general very bland. PROBABLY will not return, might give it one more try but nothing to rave about. Staff was okay, very erratic service, our waitress left in middle of dinner, never told us and we had to request who our new server was, beware they ADD TIP of 18% onto check and do not tell you. Desserts were eh, two pie options were offered, neither impressed. Good beer selection and many high end spirits but you pay, $15 and up for all cocktails, $8 up for beer. No value for cost whatsoever, nice cozy place but you pay for an upscale black tie ambience , no dishes to wash no leftovers . A few other things, they were insane trying to rush us out, constantly hawking the dirty dishes to the point my daughter started to get an anxiety attack and shed tears! One waitress was so loud and over the top she made everyone uncomfortable. The take home leftovers; the brussels sprouts were inedible, soaked in chili sauce, the heat was overwhelming! and so undercooked I could night bite into any of them, my chicken was beyond dry, it became dog food, the green beans just bent upon biting, no break through, the only thing I salvaged was mashed potatoes! We went with high expectations , my daughter had been before and said nothing was near the same or as good. When you spend $123 per person for a price fixed $59.95 dinner you expect to be blown away, we were not. We most likely will not return, the food was very average and lacked flavors besides heat, the drinks were standard and VERY expensive, service was VERY spotty and lacked any sincerity, not good things, we left a $65 tip and have no idea who got it. There are 20 restaurants nearby we would patronize before considering a return. Seeing as there were 80% empty tables when we left and 50% empty or more throughout, they are in trouble. read more
