Hearthside is a must-dine restaurant in South Jersey. Reservations are very hard to come by but if you are lucky enough to find a spot (during non-Covid times) - do NOT cancel the reservation. The restaurant is BYOB and parking is street parking. The Patco Parking Lot is just a short walk a few blocks away, which provides ample parking. Note - do need to feed the meter. Never had a disappointing dish and the menu changes seasonally. Keeps is fresh and exciting! Currently, tables are 1st come 1st serve outside with inside-dining reservations by phone only. Keywords: 40 Oz. Prime Dry-aged Porterhouse.Risotto This restaurant has been on my bucket list for a very long time. I finally ordered here with my brother in December, and got takeout. We ordered the new risotto and the aforementioned porterhouse for two. The risotto had truffle and Jerusalem artichokes. It was very interesting; while it lacked in the truffle flavor, i enjoyed the artichokes in the risotto and overall it really acted more like a carb for the main entree, the porterhouse. I don't exaggerate on Yelp often, but this was the BEST steak I have had from a restaurant during the pandemic. It was cooked perfectly and seasoned amazingly. The flavor in the meat was phenomenal, and the steak is accompanied by potatoes and mushrooms, both very delicious sides to go along with the steak. This meal was one to remember for sure, and was well worth the wait. Will definitely try to come back after the pandemic comes to an end. read more

After a long-awaited reservation (4 months out!) four of us headed to Hearthside with wine in our hands and excitement in our hearts. The atmosphere of the restaurant is stunning. It's inviting, cozy, and chic. The open-air windows/doors were fabulous, as we were lucky enough to visit on an unseasonably warm spring day. Warm breezes and fun music enveloped us like a giant hug. The menu consists of small, medium, and large plates. In order for the kitchen to pace and pair your selections appropriately, you are encouraged to place your entire order at the onset (minus dessert). The pacing, the presentation, the portions, and the flavors of our dishes were impeccable. I am unable to rank our favorite items, as we genuinely loved everything equally. If I had to choose one dish that stood out slightly above the others, then it would be those sensational PEI Mussels (coconut curry, scallions, and lemongrass focaccia for dipping). If I could have ordered vats of that broth to go, then I would be drinking it daily at home. Service was attentive, knowledgable, and friendly. They would check-in periodically without conveying an impression that you're being rushed. Water glasses were topped off regularly and our server ensured our wine glasses were full. Our experience at Hearthside makes me reconsider every other 5 star rating I've ever given to a restaurant on Yelp. This, my friends, was sheer perfection. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. Totally overrated is an understatement. Let me start at the beginning. I made a reservation for 4 for a Saturday night on their website. When I didn't get a confirmation email I called the restaurant to confirm. The website clearly states a fixed price menu with an ala carte option. Once seated, we inquired about the ala carte option and was informed by the surly waiter that ala carte was for outdoor dining only. Since none of us are "big eaters" we were somewhat surprised and disappointed. It only went down from here. The food is less than disappointing. Some dishes are downright terrible. Pork Rib and Papaya Salad - this was surprisingly good. The pork was spicey and well-seasoned. The meat was tender with just enough fat. The papaya went nicely with it. The Barata Appetizer was also very good. The Orecchiette could have been good had the broccoli rabe not been so bitter. Also, the fennel sausage was almost not existent. Whole Bronzino - a friend and I shared this dish. The fish was meaty and moist. The presentation was terrible. A whole fish on a plate surrounded by olives. They gave us a spoon to serve ourselves. I've always had the waiters filet the fish for us and put it on the plate. The worst dish of the night was the chicken. It's described as served in "herb oil". It was inedible and floating in "grease". When my two dining partners complained to the waiter his attitude was "your problem not ours." Hearthside is a combination of bad food and poor service. At $90 a pop you can get better service and food at any number of places nearby. read more

This can be a very difficult place to get reservations for. We previously had reservations but had to cancel due to a family emergency. As always I started trying to get reservations about 60 days into the future. The best I could do when I finally obtained reservations was 5:00 pm which is when it opens. That being said it is located in a corner building on the main road through Collingswood. There are several other quality restaurants along this same strip that we've previously been to. There were tables on the sidewalk along the perimeter of the building for the adventurous this October evening. We arrived several minutes before five and we were joined by several other groups who were waiting to get in as well. The restaurant is nicely decorated. Most of the furniture was Scandinavian in design. There four stools along the counter that looked into the cooking area which was open for all the diners to see. It was fun to watch the different coins in action. At one point I walked over to the counter to talk to two of the chefs. They were friendly and talked a little shop with me. Our waiter, Darryl, was patient with us in explaining the menu and specials. We were complicated because my cousin is allergic to garlic and my wife is lactose intolerant so we required some special requests. These requests were taken in stride. The menu offers small plates, medium plates and large plated. There was also a steak for two at $130.00 and an Bronzino for two at $62.00. Small plates were akin to appetizer sized offerings. We chose two which was grilled octopus which is always a favorite of mine. We also ordered charred broccoli which was prepared with avocado, green onion vinaigrette & pistachio nuts which was also delicious. My wife and I decided to order a medium plate of pasta to share. Unfortunately the menu wasn't clear that it was prepared with squid ink along with Calabrian chili's and San marzano tomatoes. My wife is not a fan of squid ink but I am. It too was delicious. We also split an order of day boat scallops. There were five nice sized scallops. They were prepared perfectly, browned on the surface and buttery in the middle. My cousin had the trout. Her husband had the cowboy pork chop which he had no problem finishing. The service was excellent with a number of servers available for our table. I'll have to withhold judgement on the coffee which I did not taste but was told was strong. I did taste their carrot cake which was not the typically sweet type. These flavors were more subtle and very good as well. Two negatives. I'm 6'3" and found the chairs very uncomfortable because of where the cross piece fell on my back. There are some high backed chairs in different part of the restaurant which the owner suggested that I request next time I'm there. However, unless there are chairs stored elsewhere I'm not sure that any would be available since the restaurant is always so busy. I'd probably have to request one when making reservations. The other thing is that I don't like paying for bread which was charred but not anything fancy. Inspite of these two things which are not huge I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant and plan on making another trip there in the near future. read more

tl;dr a chic Collingswood BYOB with seasonal offerings of Italian-inspired American fare I've been dying to try Hearthside ever since my partner began working in Collingswood, and (like I'm sure most patrons do) I made my reservation two months in advance and bided my time. We arrived on a weekend afternoon for the early seating and were quickly escorted to our place. Hearthside emphasizes a sophisticated-rustic ambiance, with all wooden furnishings, exposed brick, and vintage light bulbs. The tall ceiling features drop-down beams in geometric triangles. The open-kitchen concept aptly features a hearth front-and-center. The intimate space is filled with tables but doesn't feel cramped. Floor-to-ceiling bay windows line the restaurant and can be opened for a nice day. Our waiter helped curate our meal, and we decided upon the Bread & Butter, the Hamachi Crudo, the Grilled Octopus, the Agnolotti, the Squid Ink Spaghetti, and the Crispy Pork Shank. The bread basket was generously stuffed with sourdough, French, and focaccia, alongside a salted whipped butter. The focaccia was most noteworthy, for its robust olive oil and rosemary flavors, without feeling overly dense. The crudo featured fresh chunks of strawberries and rhubarb and a citrus-chili. The produce gave strong flavors to the sashimi-style yellowtail slices, and a smattering of grain puffs ensured an interesting texture with each bite. The octopus channeled Filipino vibes, grilled and plated with a blood orange palapa sauce. The rice cakes and charred octopus had crisp outsides and soft (not-chewy) interiors, and the sauce instilled a tanginess to the otherwise umami flavors. The agnolotti came out smelling fragrantly of cheese, served al dente beneath an earthy sauce of mushroom, almond, and celery root. The spaghetti was distinctly spring-y, highlighting the tomato and jalapeño in its flavor profile. However, the crab seemed somewhat like an afterthought and never really came through in the dish. Finally, the star dish for last -- the pork shank. Our waiter was telling us jokingly that regulars had been haranguing the owners to bring this dish back on a future menu, and I completely see why. The enormous shank was served bone-in, slow-roasted so that the meat effortlessly fell off the bone. The skin was crispy and fatty, bringing me back to the chicharrones of my childhood. But the real star was the mint chimichurri sauce, bringing a lightness and freshness to what very easily could've become an overly heavy dish. The dish was garnished with sliced avocado and Tex-Mex style rice, but these felt underwhelming next to to the incredible pork. By this point, my partner and I were much too full to handle a dessert. Despite reservations being so difficult to nab, the staff was attentive without feeling rushed. It felt like food was coming out surprisingly quickly throughout the meal, but lo and behold we had been dining for upward of 2 hours by the time we signed our check. After tax and tip, our combined total worked out to around $170, which is surprisingly fair for the top-notch of food. Somehow scored a reservation here 1.5 weeks (!!!) in advance, and it was truly an amazing experience. Who knew south jersey was hiding such a gem!? The menu is divided up into small, medium, large, and "for the table" (essentially extra large) plates. Every option looks appetizing, and I could easily see myself returning here 2-3 times just to try everything on the menu. For this go-around, we had the red snapper ceviche to start. The fish was really fresh, and all of the elements (citrus, avocado, pepper) harmonized perfectly. Our medium plate was the squid ink spaghetti. The fresh pasta was a perfect al dente texture, and the crab meat was so tender! Usually not a fan of crab, but it worked so well in this dish. The main star of the night was the crispy pork shank. The skin was indeed crisped perfectly, and the meat was really juicy. Paired great with the chimichurri sauce. There are jalapenos, avocados and rice to give the dish a tex-mex feel, but these components were really subsidiary - I could've eaten the meat by itself for days. Dessert was good, not quite as great as the main dishes, but they do serve a pretty mean blondie here. The gelato of the night was chocolate elderflower, and my one criticism is that I couldnt really taste the elderflower... Overall an outstanding meal and I will definitely be back! read more

In a word disappointing!!!!! the first two courses were so salty it took away from the flavor of the food. The tortellini was stuffed with overcooked dry grainy meat. The lobster course was dry and also overcooked. The pork chop was very good , but for a chef tasting menu it was not worth $250 for two plus tip for a pork chop. CHEF'S TASTING MENU!!! Hands down.... probably the BEST meal I've had since moving to South Jersey!! It's BYOB so you can splurge a bit on the food.. and it's so worth it. So from reviews I've read... looks like getting reservations for this place can be 3-4 months out UNLESS you're lucky like my friend, who saw a FB post on their business page that there was an opening for the Chef's Tasting Table on the upcoming Friday. Of course she called in even before asking if anybody was available because she knew she could find at least 6 people (up to 12 that will join her. My husband and I were the lucky few who came! Chef's Tasting table.. basically starts at $75 per person for a group of 6-12 people. When you're there, your server goes over how this works. Basically, they ask your group our likes and dislikes.. allergies etc. They can go with a minimum $75 worth or can even add a bit more depending on how much our group wants. We were a go with the flow kind of group and we wanted to experience as much of the food as possible. We went all out basically.. and I'm glad we did! We got the best of everything.. and even some of the people at the table that weren't huge fish people or were unsure if they'd like raw fish for example,.. they even likes the ceviche, it was that good!! Some of the food items had flavor combinations that I've never tried before and they all worked so well.. like they had potato chips on top of the ceviche which tasted awesome by the way!! Food For the tasting menu, we had I believe 14 dishes TOTAL! Here were some of my favorites that are worth mentioning: (I can't remember their exact names tho) Red Snapper Ceviche Beef Carpaccio Braised Pork Belly Prawns with their homemade bread Grilled Octopus with crispy Coconut Rice Mushroom Risotto Agnolotti Orichiette Porterhouse Whole Chicken Whole Roasted Bronzino (fish) Includes 2 desserts as well.. apple fritters with a caramel dipping sauce and a green tea panicotta The experience was so much fun... I just remember them bringing food put continuously and I couldn't believe how much food and how AMAZING all the flavors were. You'll definitely leave feeling satisfied! The staff was amazing as well and answered any of our questions on any of the items that were brought out because we were curious on the flavors and how it was prepared. I mean, come on! This restaurant is truly amazing. I had heard of Hearthside through the grape vine and I knew I had to go. I heard you have to pay for the bread but it's worth it. So of course I need to go and pay for the bread (it was very good bread). Now, it does take a while for a reservation. I believe we booked ours 6-7 weeks out, so just be prepared for that. The restaurant is also BYOB. So while it's an expensive place you won't have to pay the ridiculous alcohol cost, so It makes it that much more affordable. Their menu is like this: Small, medium and large plates. They recommend for two people that you get two of each. Now, having gone through this I recommend going 2-1-2 or 1-2-2. It was so much food and I think 2-2-2 is simply too much. Their menu ranges from having Sushi to steak to chicken to pasta. I recommend going there and trying a bunch of different items. You won't be disappointed. The only photo I have is of the lamb chops, which was a large portion. Anyway, hope to be back soon. read more

Finally was able to find someone to go with to check this place out and was so glad to go. My eyes are really bad and so it took a minute for me to find the entrance lol. Staff is nice and friendly and knowledgeable in explaining what each item is. Was hoping they would of had the black squid ink but not the night I went. Took forever to decide what to get but went with the pork belly, red snapper ceviche, bread n butter, Pei mussels, tagliatelle with pork, the oreciette with sausage, the lamb chops n duck. We could did without the bread but worth trying. The sourdough, the pretzel and one other type I forget all good carbs. The sauce for the ceviche was really good and the pork belly was so good. The coconut curry sauce get soaked up easily by the focaccia tho the mussels may have been my least favourite of what we got. The tagliatelle was the best with the spice level but the duck was also moist with slight crisp. I enjoyed this more than the lamb chops which my buddy loved. Was too full to eat dessert but was able to get an espresso which was good. For him this was the best meal he's recalled. For me I enjoyed everything and can say it's the best meal I've had so far this year and am looking forward to going back. This restaurant has become my new favorite place to go. The outside area is beautiful with string lights and cozy seating. The location is wonderful, close to two parking lots and street parking. It fits perfectly in Collingswood main st. No reservations, but didn't wait long. The food was outstanding. We had mussels to start. The coconut curry sauce was extremely flavorful. We also had risotto and the Bronzino. It was incredibly good, seriously I wanted to lick my plate after both dishes. The bread that came with the mussels to dip in the sauce was very good as well. Portion sizes are on the smaller side, and pretty pricey (bill for three was $150), but the quality of the food is worth the price. Small plates: gnocchi fritti special (airy fried dough with heaping pile of prosciutto), beef carpaccio (crispy shallots and jalapenos add wonderful texture), PEI mussels (would drink a glass of that curry sauce). Pasta: fregola with smoked ricotta, corn and pesto (delicious and stunning!) Large plates: roasted chicken (perfectly cooked), flank steak (great crust and flavor) Dessert: creamy espresso gelato, chocolate babka with caramel sauce and banana gelato Reservations are tough to get, but we were able to sit outside on a humid Wednesday evening without one. I generally don't write reviews. I must say the food here is very good! I had the avocado toast with crab meat as an appetizer. Delicious!!! I also had the Bronzino & my husband had the pork chops . Both were excellently prepared. Although I would have preferred less char on the Bronzino. If you like potatoes , the crispy potatoes as a side dish was very tasty!! Well, like many people writing reviews, my partner and I don't understand the hype surrounding this restaurant. Unreal prices and hardly enough food for an entree. We asked if the scallop dish was big enough to be shared with another entree, were reassured it was, and then received three scallops and some spinach. I appreciate good quality food, but the level of quality needs to match the level of quantity. Needless to say, we paid for a feast and got a tasting. read more

We decided to try Hearthside on a whim and were lucky enough to get a last minute reservation at the chef's table, the bar seats overlooking the open kitchen. Our server was awesome and made great appetizer recommendations though I wish he had warned that the pork is served rare, I would have requested no pink, something about pork that isn't white is off putting and I really couldn't eat much of it. We had plenty of appetizers so I wasn't even hungry by the time the entree came but had it been cooked to a higher temperature it would have been worth boxing up and taking home. The irony is not lost on me that while I complain about the rare pork, I most enjoyed the beef carpaccio appetizer. read more

As mixed a bag as one will ever find. A popular restaurant that makes us hypothesize that this is a case of a local market with few other like options. On one hand, the cooking at Hearthside is good, with some dishes very good and a couple with minor issues. Service was friendly, generally attentive yet slow and reactive at times. On the other hand, the challenges here are significant enough that we are unlikely to return. First, the restaurant has some odd and almost offensive policies. Two examples. 1) A year or two ago, running a bit late for a reserved table, we phoned to let the restaurant know. After telling them our ETA of 17 minutes past the booked time, the response was immediate. They'd only seat parties who arrived no later than fifteen minutes past the confirmed time. Despite telling them by phone that we were in the car and more than halfway there, they were either unable or unwilling to cut us the two-to-three minute slack. We turned around and went to a more customer-focused spot. 2) This past week, on our second attempt, we booked online but called to ask if outside seating was available. Told it was "first come, first served," we arrived early and saw a few free tables available outside. We were incredulous when the hostess then told us that, to seat us at an outside table, there'd be an "up charge" of $10/person. We mentioned that that policy wasn't on their website or told to us when we phoned but still it didn't matter. It was their "cancellation" policy and, as we'd need to "cancel" our inside booking to take the outside table, we'd have to pay the penalty. Highly annoyed, we never reached consensus at our table whether this was more an example of blatant greed or just idiotic. Either way, a policy utterly devoid of any customer focus. We tried most of the menu given the size of our group. A carpaccio and bucatini were standouts. Scallops and a hamachi crudo were overly salted. With eyebrow-popping high prices out of line with the local market, the tolerance for seasoning or cooking imistakes is less that what it might be. Most of the dishes were good but rather ordinary as conceived. Service was generally attentive but slow. This caused some stress in our group since they also have a two-hour table limit. Bottom line, good food with very high prices and truly illogical and offensive policies. All in, just not worth a return visit for us. read more

I can sum up this restaurant VERY easily: great, amazing flavors for small portions at expensive prices. Is it worth the price ? I'm giving this restaurant three stars. The service was great, top notch. No complaints there. Ambiance and decor, same as well, top notch. However, these prices are just not worth it. 30-40% too high. The portions are small and I'm still hungry and have $120 less in my pocket. The good news is restaurants menu is always changing and I am looking forward to updating this review. My boyfriend and I love Collingswood, so when Hearthside opened we were dying for an occasion to go. It's pretty hard to get a last-min reservation during popular hours. We wanted to go for Valentine's Day but opted for a better time on the Monday before instead. We started with two appetizers: the coconut curry mussels and garlic prawns. In my mind, I was like "These are kind of basic." You see them on so many menus, but our server recommended them. A lot of things on the menu are classics and simple but just executed on a higher level. The coconut curry broth was soooooo smooth, served with fluffy grilled focaccia for dipping. I enjoyed the garlic prawns more than my boyfriend (a little too oily for him while I was helping myself to dipping the bread in its extra melted butter sauce...). I did wish it had a brighter citrus note to it, but it was still delicious. Then, we shared the scallop and lamb chop entrees. The scallops were beautifully seared and served with a smooth purée with a nice sweetness that complimented the sweet scallops. On top, there were tiny purple potato chips, which I wished were crispier. The lamb chops were cooked perfectly medium rare with a slight char that I really enjoyed. Even though we were pretty full, we saw so many dishes of a dessert go out that it piqued our interest. It was the Belgian waffles with ice cream. My boyfriend quickly ate it up. For me, it was a bit saccharine with a sweet maple ice cream and candies nuts, but I still finished it up. My favorite part was the ambiance. The open kitchen faces the whole restaurant, and the chefs are all so calm. Compared to other open kitchens I've sat amongst, there was a hustle and bustle. Here, it just seemed so well orchestrated and relaxed. That, combined with the quality level of our meal, just blows me away. Small details like a locally-made Collingswood candle company scent in the bathroom just made me love it more. The food is delicious! One complaint though is that they don't tell you about the time limit. After ordering multiple small plates, 2 medium pasta plates and entrees I was informed by the waiter and later the owner that my time (2 hr) time limit was up... if I wanted dessert it had to be "to go." Frankly this is awkward and I was not informed of the 2 hour time limit when I was seated or reserved my reservation.... I was happy to order extra or tip more. I don't understand the hype over this place. Many mistakes which you wouldn't expect from a restaurant with this reputation. The hamachi ceviche was excellent. Great balance of acid and the potato chips added crunch and the right amount of spice. The waygu beef carpaccio featured thin slices of beef but was so overloaded with toppings that you could not taste the featured ingredient. The raw jalapeños were so overpowering that you had to remove them. Sometimes less is more. The pasta with lavender duck was next. I'm not going to lie, the pasta was excellent. Perfectly cooked with proper bite. The sauce was rich and creamy. The little bits of lavender duck were lost, there was little reason to include the duck except for the description on the menu which sounds great. But don't get me wrong, it was very tasty pasta dish. Main course or "large" was next and a total failure. My wife had the scallops. 4 to the plate. Nice sear on one side of the scallop, no color on the other. But the main issue was the salt level and this is coming from salt loving people. Meat can take all the salt you got, scallops and fish need a deft hand. Way too liberal in this case. Next was my chicken. It came out of the oven a black cinder. A carbon covered burnt inedible mess. However the server and manager insisted that is how they serve it. I just don't understand and wish I had taken a picture. Sometimes my grill will flare up and if I don't catch it the chicken will go up in flames. That was this. Overall the service was great. The smalls that required no cooking were good but the carpaccio was overwhelmed. The pasta chef has skill. The large were failures. The chicken should have never left the kitchen and if that was intentional then the chef needs to rethink his vision. Am I being judgmental? We came here on a busy not and they did not disappoint! Food was phenomenal, our server was so amazing we left a bigger tip than usual.

Amazing from beginning to end!!! The kale salad and Brussel sprouts were amazing!!! We all tried a different pasta and the flavors were all so delicious!! We shared the chicken and the steak!
