I'm going to start off by saying I work for CDPH. I didn't want to make a scene. It took everything in me not to call 311 and file a complaint with Food Protection to pay a visit to this establishment. Now, with that said, let me explain how I arrived at the restaurant ahead of my sister. I asked for a booth and was seated quickly. The waitress brought two cups upside down on saucers and poured coffee into mine while I waited for my sister. Once my sister arrived and turned her mug over, we found lipstick marks on the outside of a supposedly clean mug... okay, no problem. The waitress was appalled and brought another mug. She took our orders. I got a patty melt on rye with mushrooms added, with fries. My sister got the garden skillet with pancakes. It took a while for everything to come. While waiting, I got a cup of cream of chicken & rice soup (too watery and too much lemon), only to have a long hair caught between the bowl and saucer... yes, that went back too. Finally, our food arrived lukewarm. My sister's butter wouldn't melt on her pancakes, so we had to send that back as well. By this point, we just nibbled and chatted. Now the bill comes... $52 for this experience! I'm under the impression that management or ownership has changed hands a few times. I know I won't be returning or recommending this establishment! I usually get the same things, this time I decided to give their chilaquiles a try. I regret to say, it was one of the worst chilaquiles I've had in a while. The tortillas chips tasted like stale movie theater quality nachos. The only thing edible was the eggs & the chicken on the side, which by the way was extra. Today I went to Hearty Cafe Pancake House with my guy and his family. It was 6 of us and we really enjoyed the ambiance and food. The only thing I didn't care for was the hash browns. The server came by immediately with coffee too and to get drink orders. The coffee was fresh and hot! I ordered the Louisiana Chicken skillet pictured in the review with an English muffin. Everything was good and flavorful too. The peppers had a kick and that was really delicious. If you don't like spicy food I would consider removing it. The chicken could use a little more seasoning but there was salt and pepper at the table so no big deal. I would also like my hashbrowns a little more crispier. The Skillet also came with jalapeño peppers for additional spice, crispy hash browns, eggs, topped with melted cheddar cheese. The flavors worked well together and I was able to get some balance from the heat with their house pancakes which we also rich in flavor and very very fluffy (which I personally love) I had tons of left overs which Joel encouraged me to take with ensuring they would warm up nicely for a second round! The food comes very quick but make sure you check it before you start eating as you will find things in your food that you did not order. On this visit, I ordered a veggie skillet with spinach. The spinach appears to be frozen and then cooked and added to the skillet because it is wilted. This was not fresh spinach. I believe the hash browns are already cooked sitting waiting for orders and they just add your options and eggs to the top. The place is clean as the tables are attended to right away and customer service is also good. If you want a decent quick breakfast, by all means try it out.
