What to say about this airport........
Well, first, let's discuss the British Airways Executive Lounge.
I am not kidding when I say that I would not mind LIVING in this lounge. The food they supplied was almost GREAT - including a mushroom soup I could not stop eating, a pasta with a sauce you can pick, and - get this - Thai Chicken Curry w/ rice! They also had a pretty decent salad bar. Did I mention the 7 or 8 bottles of WINE they had for the taking? Or the beers they had in the numerous refrigerators? Or the wall of espresso machines - - like, 6 of them? That said - the seating varied from shabby to great, but did I mention the MUSHROOM SOUP? (They also had vegetable soup but who had time to try that?)
As for the airport, it really deserves two separate reviews. One review should be for TERMINAL 5 (the new BA Terminal) and then another for "Heathrow - the rest of the terminals".
Terminal 5 is.... how to put this..... a super mall. Yes. Hermes? Gucci? Harrods? Burberry? Chanel? Yes - all there. This is not the kind of terminal where you come to spend your last £20 - - oh, no.. you can barely EAT with £20. The real smart shopper will search all over London - mark with your eyes what you want, and come to Heathrow Terminal 5 before your return trip home to spend the whole wad of cash (or credit, in today's case) there.
Also - - the food choices are vast (and pricey, but so is all of England). While at Heathrow, make sure you try a place called "EAT". I like the name, it's to the point and accurate. Get their soup of the day, and grab a sandwich there. Delicious.
I had to be at Heathrow 3 times on this last trip - and I didn't have any reportable problems at all. Going and coming back from Paris was simple - and returning home, while a bit more hectic (what is UP with having separate security lines for your carry-on baggage and shoes?) presented no real problems - - just lots of people.
I will say that the Heathrow Express is by far the coolest invention ever. If ever you find yourself visiting London - NEVER take a cab into London unless you plan on filing bankruptcy when you get home. For some £16, you can take an express train straight to Paddington Station in London in less than half the time, and THEN you cab it to your hotel. This train was super-fast, but also super-clean. I almost didn't want to get off.
Speaking of trains - - don't let it even cross your mind that you might be able to walk from one terminal to the next.
Some COUNTRIES are smaller than this airport.
You do have the inconvenience of having to take a train from here to there, and then you will have to walk a lot in between. If you have a lot of "stuff" you're carrying - you want to make sure you have handy dandy comfortable shoes. But then again - - most people will not have to change from one terminal to another, but getting off the Heathrow Express at Terminal 3 involved walking 1.3432 million miles to my gate.
One final word of warning:
Going back to the shops...
Do not forget you have a flight. If you are "browsing" because you think you have a lot of time, you will undoubtedly not realize that it's been 2.5 hours and when you think to yourself, "Well, I will have to rush over to my gate..." as you pay for your regretful 2.5 hours - - you will find that your gate is on another planet.
IF you make your flight - you will have jello legs, and land in the United States feeling like you ran a marathon (which you technically did, and hopefully won).
Trust me on this. read more
