When we arrived l expected more decor, 1 wall w shelves of trophies & awards but not much else, I would suggest some paint on walls or games to entertain kids while you wait for food. You order up at counter & choose meats & choice of sides. I got pulled pork sandwich & potato salad. Meat is on toasted bread & very meaty sandwich. They have 4-5 bbq sauces that u help yourself to on counter. Sweet was my favorite but other varieties included spicy pineapple, smoky apple, vinegar /mustard based. Pork was smoked flavor but bit greasy. Potato salad was good but nothing special. My little nephew got tater tots & chicken strips but neither of us liked chicken as breading had strange flavor. Overall l don't think any of us were impressed so doubt l would return. Service was missing as basically all they did was bring us food but missed items. read more

On my Quest for the Best - I love trying BBQ every place I go across the country. There are only two - "5 stars" on my list over decades of trying out various places. This is one of them! The value - serving size and the quality make this a 5-star! (If they change that I would change my rating). They had unusual types of BBQ to try such as apple, blueberry, and some others that were Excellent in my opinion. Traditionally good, but better than most. The smoked pork flavor gets your attention - skilled smokers! I personally liked the Blueberry mixed with some spicy BBQ! Their Tater tots were perfect as well. Two meat platter (I had pulled pork x2), tater tots, beans (beans were good, but nothing spectacular). If I lived there - they would know me on a first name basis, I'm sure I'd go that often! I'm always on the hunt for the best bbq. I yelped lunch places and Heavy Smoke came and so I told my husband we are trying this today. We didn't know what to expect when we walked in but the place is huge and seeing all the trophies told me we were in for a good time. I ordered the pork cakes and my husband ordered the 3 meat plate- ribs, burnt ends, and brisket. He said the burnt ends were awesome, the brisket melts in your mouth and the ribs fall off the bone and was done right great. He got potato casserole and coleslaw for the sides which were both great. We did get the apple bread pudding for dessert and it was delicious too. We will be back soon!! read more

The BEST BBQ we've had in a while! I'd been following them on Facebook for quite a while and day after day, they posted that they'd sold out. Says somethin' right there! Hubby got a Pork Steak and I got Brisket. Both were SO VERY flavorful and unbelievably tender, yet not overly fatty! The sides were great too. We got, and shared, Loaded Potato Salad, Smoked Beans, and Mac & Cheese. Took us some AWESOME leftovers home... They offered us a cup of each BBQ sauce, and though we usually prefer spicy, we actually liked the Sweet and the Smokey Apple the most. But BY FAR, my favorite was the white (horseradish) BBQ sauce. Absolutely PERFECT with the brisket. Service was friendly and efficient. Tables were spaced apart nicely. Staff wore masks. Place seemed clean. Can't WAIT to get back here!!! read more

Food is enjoyable, but the staff are pretty awkward. The person at the counter made me feel uncomfortable the way she said "enjoy the food" as she tied up my to-go order bag. I ordered the pork-which but it was missing the sauce and the slaw and the garlic bread. My wife's order was also missing the garlic bread. This space seems way too big for how many people are there at once, it's also weirdly lit with cool tone florescent lights and no music playing... this feels like a place where barbecue dreams come to die, but maybe you want to feel like your in a dark dystopian daydream when you eat your pulled pork?. Better yet, this looks like the old mattress direct closed down and the cousin of the landlord pulled a favor and got their barbecue joint they have always wanted. Also who closes at 7pm on a weekday??? Also $18 for a pulled pork sandwich, a chunk of bread, and a side??? Are you serious? The actual restaurant is extremely spacious and it's definitely the kind of place I'd love to sit down and eat at. As for the BBQ itself, we liked the Brisket/Burnt Ends and enjoyed the sausage. In the area and stopped in for lunch today, first time. Not busy at all. Very large for real-deal BBQ place, or any restaurant for that matter. Ribbons, banners and trophies are on every wall, very impressive. Huge portions. I suspect on a Friday or Saturday this place would be a 5-star with more people and fresher food. Huge portions that could easily be shared between two people. Overall, the food today was very good, but not award-winning. My favorite was probably the spare ribs. The brisket was good too, but probably not cooked last night. I only ate a couple of burnt ends, but I was getting pretty full. The pasta was a bit mushy in the mac-n-cheese, but flavor was good. The BBQ beans were very good, but lightly seasoned. The creamy coleslaw was great. I only took one bite of the Texas toast, but it was very good too. Plenty of choices on the sauce. Personally, I would like one option for a spicier sauce to mix in to get the spice level I want. I would definitely go back next time I am in the area. read more

Agreed with D M.'s review the BBQ is mediocre to say the least. The burnt ends weren't "burnt", Brisket was tough and dry and the rubs were fatty (but they did fall off the bone). Sauces were ok. As a Floridian who loves BBQ and did marketing for a famous BBQ restaurant, they must bring out the real big guns during competition and don't know yet how to replicate it for the masses. This was our first time eating at Heavy Smoke. My wife has been wanting to try it and we were finally in the area so we stopped in. The restaurant is huge, and all the tables are a good distance from each other ( if you are worried about that stuff). My wife went with the burnt ends with two sides. She chose the Mac and cheese and baked beans. I decided on the brisket sandwich with one side. I chose Mac and cheese as well. The burnt ends were real good. Very tender and juicy. The portion was in line with other restaurants in the area, and the sides were tasty. The brisket sandwich was good, portion was a little light and the Texas toast was a little overdone. But the sandwich still had good flavor. The only issue we saw and it's probably because of Covid is the sauce on the side is VERY small. We are used to having several choices on the table to sample and enjoy as much as we want. We ran out very quick , I'm sure the restaurant would have given us more just a hassle. Told recently by another KCBS judge from St Louis that this competition cooking team had great barbecue...I had to try it next time I was in St Louis. So driving through this afternoon, I stopped and wife and I each got a three meat platter so we could try different things. Guess I'll always be a Kansas City BBQ snob, because, ahhh...no. I was told they had good burnt ends (again, KC snob, but I'll try them...) Unfortunately, couldn't try them. They were out when I got there at 2:00pm. 3 hours after they opened...and they are open until 7pm. Pulled pork was fatty and really greasy, ribs were also fatty and just fell off the bone (no, that is not a good thing). Brisket had good smoke but was dry and tough. The jalapeno and cheese sausage was good. Sauces were unique and were ok. Sides were good. Tater tots were the highlight of the meal for me. With all of the KCBS awards everywhere, they obviously know what they're doing when cooking in a competition. But transferring that knowledge into the grind and consistency of a restaurant isn't easy and heavy smoke missed the mark. Oklahoma Joe's (now Joe's KC) does it (best ribs in KC), Q39 does it (excellent brisket), Slaps BBQ (not my favorite but good) and Smokey D's in Des Moines does it. read more

In my original review, I recommended just buying the meat to go and pairing it with your own sides. Yesterday we had friends over for football, so my husband ordered four pounds of the pulled pork for carryout. As I mentioned in my original review, they give you these little containers with about two tablespoons of sauce in each. This time, they gave us several of the containers, and it was enough for about one pound out of the four. Kind of embarrassing when you're serving food to company. They have four flavors of bbq sauce - pineapple, blueberry, apple, and sweet. They sell the sweet sauce by the bottle, but none of the others, otherwise we'd have just bought a bottle of each so we'd have enough. I find it bizarre that a place that specializes in bbq would be this chintzy with their sauces. Just in case you're curious, Amazon sells different versions of apple, pineapple, and blueberry bbq sauces. If you want to experience those flavors, I would advise buying something similar by the bottle somewhere else, like Amazon, since Heavy Smoke is so protective of theirs. That's what I plan to do, but it seems silly that I should have to. lf the smoked meat wasn't so darn good, I wouldn't bother. It's ridiculous that you have to make your own sides if you want them edible, and you have to buy bbq sauce elsewhere if you want to have enough. Buyer beware. I would have given them 5 stars because their food does taste great, but we will never be back. We ordered a really large catering order for a graduation party. The 9x13 party tray tins were stacked on top of one another; 3 tins per paper bag. The juices from the meat leaked all over the inside of my car, but this wasn't the worst of our problems. My wife noticed that we were charged twice for the order and getting our money back was difficult. It dragged on for over a week. We had to get bank statements proving it when all they had to do was look at the transaction log for the day. No apologies or anything to make us want to return. read more

Heavy Smoke had catered a meal at an event we attended and the food was amazing! We decided to stop in for BBQ and we were less than impressed. While she was polite, the woman taking our order was texting (like phone in front of her face) the entire time she took our order. While not the worse thing, it wasn't the greatest service. The tables were clean and had plenty of high chairs to use and the food arrived quickly. The brisket was dry... like I broke my fork trying to cut a bite. But the pork and ribs had sat in water for a while. While the name is "heavy smoke" it was very bland with no smokey flavor. There's no BBQ sauce that's spicy, but the Smokey Apple was good. We did really like the house made chips, the seasoned tater tots, and our kids like the Mac & cheese. Looking around the room at all the awards won and our soggy pork makes me think that what we were served was not the same food entered into any competitions. If you're looking for BBQ, I think there's better options. read more

Great food. We ate here twice within 7 days. Food was fresh and hot and the portions ate huge. Before you go, you should know what to expect. This is a BBQ spot. You order at the counter and they bring your food to the table.The rest is up to you. Get your own drinks, napkins, condiments etc. You won't be having a candle lit dinner here but you can have an awesome meal in an upbeat atmosphere. It's a family spot. It's not quiet. They were out of many items at the end of the first day so we came earlier the second time. They had everything. I can appreciate that. The food is fresh. Oh my this is good stuff. They may not have the multiple locations, the known name or the greatest looking establishment but the food is OUTSTANDING. Great portions, reasonable prices. I have tried ribs, brisket, burnt ends, pulled pork. My favorites are the burnt ends and ribs. Followed by pulled pork. I normally don't use bbq sauce but theirs is outstanding and compliments the meats flavors and does not over power it. The loaded potato salad and Cole slaw is very good. I ordered the Pops Plate to serve my family of 10 on Christmas. The food was incredible. The portions were generous. Pops Plate has a great selection of different smoked meats, sides and garlic bread. I have to admit I was a little afraid to reheat the meat ( as they were closed on Christmas Eve) but the heating directions were PERFECT! It was the easiest Christmas meal ever. Remember when this was the pool hall I use to frequent. After eating lunch today, I am glad that to has been replaced. I got the glutton, which was superb. My wife got pulled pork nacho, which she loved, and my son ate all of his chicken strips. Everyone else's food also looked amazing. One gripe is with plastic silverware. We've been twice, and both times get the turkey and pulled chicken. Both are tender and excellent. The sauces here are unique and really elevate the meal. The apple and the white horseradish are my favorites. Cole slaw is very creamy and may not be for everybody but we like the loaded baked potato casserole side they have. read more

Um...so....this is a bbq place we went to. Blown that I spent 20 dollars on a plate of fat. Heck, they couldn't even toast the Texas toast. I could maybe expect such lack luster food from a joint that was once great. Putting a bunch of trophies on your wall and then willing to serve such lack luster food is not the best business proposition...not in this town. We chose this restaurant because not many were open on Jan 1, my birthday, and oh boy was I happy! I ordered the 3 meats with the ribs, brisket, and pork! It was ALL amazing! I eat a lot of BBQ so I tend to think I know good food! The ribs were perfect, with the meat sliding right off! The brisket mixed with the sweet bbq dressing was on point!
