We hired HeedeLand a professional landscape and maintenance company to rescue our overgrown yard. Our initial design was planned around saving water but we lacked information on the grow conditions and overall maintenance of the plants we had chosen. Mr Heede talked us through each and every plant, and had a designer on his crew make suggestions and improvements that are truly stunning. In addition another of his crewmates built a structure to match our landscape design and improved and repaired the garden lights. Another crewmate replaced and organized the stepping stones to prevent falling, and finally the broken and inefficient drip system was completely removed and was replaced with a system that HeedeLand will watch test and fix as needed. We collected 4 bids for the work that is now mostly done. The huge difference in those giving bids did not offer maintenance. Why pay for a new design and not want those who helped build the design to continue to adjust and maintain the design. The typical mow and blow crews you see around town cannot afford the time and attention needed to adjust drip lines, replace plants etc. We learned the hard way on two occasions in 36 years that the single most important feature of a landscape design company is their commitment to maintenance. My wife and I contacted Marty for an estimate on some landscape work: mow curb, sprinkler repair and adjustment, new ground cover, 4 new plants and drip lines, and removal of old ground cover/weeds. This is the first time I've ever been charged for an estimate ($75), although I was assured that if we accepted his bid, it would be credited. Marty told me that it would be 12 weeks between the estimate and the work start date. We do not have a palatial estate, so I even offered to go elsewhere if he and his crew were had too much going on to squeeze us in. He assured me it would be fine. Marty arrived for the scheduled appointment and we started talking about what my wife and I wanted to have done. He seemed rushed and generally disinterested in the entire process. He was out of there within 30 minutes. The estimate was emailed later. Most of the quote was ridiculously overpriced. What he told us would be $300-$400 in sprinkler repairs turned out to be $1000, with a lot of work we did not ask to be performed. Along the same lines, we wanted to remove the brick border of our flower beds and clean all the old black bark that remained out of them. I wish I could show pictures here... it's not a very large space, and the bark wasn't 100% ground cover. Yet, the estimate was $1625, and again, he added in services that we did not request (Iike tree and shrub pruning). When asked how the estimate would differ if we elected just to have the brick border and bark removed (like we asked), he said he would knock off $600. That's still over $1000 to what essentially boiled down to removing bark and about 80 bricks. It would be $650 to grind 3 stumps (none more than 14" diameter). Finally, for the mow curb, he told us up front that he would have to charge for at least 100', even though we only wanted about 50' poured in the front yard. When I asked about doing the backyard as well, suddenly there were concerns about tree roots. For what I described in my first paragraph, it was about $4800 and that did not include the fees for putting our plants in the ground. With an estimate that covered a bunch of stuff we didn't want, and resulting prices that made me suspicious, I made up my mind not to work with this company. It almost felt like a scam -- charge $75 for an estimate that is incredibly overblown, almost guaranteeing that we wouldn't accept the bid. I have no proof that this is his modus operandi, but we felt like we dodged a bullet by not hiring him. read more

I hired Heede Landscaping to pull some plants, clean up flower beds, add shredded redwood mulch to flower beds, add plants, and replace a drip system. First of all to get my cost down Marty and I decided that I could pull the old plants myself. Which I did. Well we must have had a miscommunication because he thought that meant I was going to clean the flower beds as well. No problem, he tacked on an additional $75 to finish that work. They placed the new plants and mulch and the yard looked beautiful. Fast forward about a year... Problem #1 I'm not the first owner of my home.The previous owners placed that black plastic on the flower beds to prevent weeds. Well it was old and ripped and kind of pointless so I wanted all of it removed and any other old stuff pulled before placing mulch. Well about a year later, some of the mulch shifted and I noticed there was still the black plastic. I checked other spots of the flower bed and they were ALL still there. They NEVER cleaned the flower beds like discussed. I emailed Marty and told him what I found and he refunded me $75. That's great, but now I have old junk under the new mulch. Problem #2 They placed new plants and installed a new drip system. After a few months one of the plants died. I realize now after clearing the mulch that the drip system was watering dirt. It wasn't directed to the plant. They should've paid better attention to where the drips were directed because they installed it, right?!? Marty was very pleasant to deal with, but I probably wouldn't work with this company again. PS - this work was done in 2014. We contacted him along with a few other local landscapers to get a quote to clean up our backyard and front yard, remove some ugly mulch and replace it with something nicer, add sod to an area that was just soil, plant some nice plants, put in some sprinklers, remove an old stump, plant a tree and clean up our front walkway with pavers or concrete. Marty showed up when he said he would (earlier, actually, after calling ahead to make sure it was okay). We spent a lot of time asking him questions and taking up a ton of time, which he was very much okay with. He made good recommendations and his quote was competitive. He also quoted us based on square footage, which made it easy to understand where he was coming from and also made the conversation much easier when we decided to make a concrete walkway wider than we originally had wanted to (additional width x length x $/sq ft = additional cost, fully transparent). We paid a deposit when we accepted his proposal and the balance on completion. During the actual work, his crew showed up at 7:30 each morning, asked whatever questions they needed to ask, and just got to work. Even after being paid in full Marty was very responsive to our questions and good about coming around for a few weeks afterward to make sure that the grass was growing, sprinklers were working like they were supposed to, etc. It has been about three weeks now and the job looks great. Marty was one of the few companies I called that actually called me back. I thought I needed some irrigation repairs, but after speaking with Marty I realized I could get by without it. I still had some sprinkler valve issues that I wanted addressed. I wanted all of the valves replaced, as well as the sprinkler heads since they are all 12 years old. Marty had a worker out the next day because another job got rescheduled. The worker replaced all of my heads and valves and now my system is working like new again, and for a few hundred less than I had suspected I would have to pay (not based on their estimate, I had a number in my head before I started this project). We hired HeedeLand in Fall 2012 to install plants, trees, bark, and rocks in our new construction backyard. We had a plan drawn by a landscape designer and requested estimates from four companies based on the plan. The estimate provided by Marty Heede, the owner, was thoroughly done and price-wise, he came in around the middle. The overall experience of working with Marty was very positive. He always responded to emails/phone calls within one business day (most of the time, just a few hours). He was obviously respectful of our plan, but when we asked for suggestions he spent quite some time talking with us about possible changes and improvements. Clearly, he is passionate about landscaping. We have zero experience with maintaining a landscape - this is literally our first backyard and our first time tending to plants at all - and Marty really helped us by suggesting low maintenance plants and educating us about maintenance so that we can take care of everything ourselves. The installation process itself went very well. Marty oversaw everything and his employees were knowledgeable and pleasant. Our backyard has been completed now for 7+ months, and we are still very pleased with it. We are probably "high maintenance" customers in the sense that we have no idea what we are doing and thus we ask lots of questions, but through it all Marty has been consistently patient and generous with offering advice. In McKinley Village, we had just a small strip of weedy backyard, so we contacted Marty. He immediately understood our desire for economy, minimalism and low maintenance, and we went with many of his ideas. He suggested a low, curved seating bench to balance out the straight lines of the porch, actually called a "Calfornia Room," which is like a room absent one wall. That side of the porch faces a trellis of star jasmine. Other tall plants were chosen with an eye to color and texture. To choose the best specimens of Bay Laurel, Marty took the time to visit three nuseries. Marty, his son Aaron, and their other workers were on schedule, quiet, efficient and friendly. 5 Stars for Heedeland Landscape. My wife and I finally decided to completely gut and overhaul our front and backyard. We shopped around and got some estimates. We found and went with Marty and Heedeland Landscape. We decided not to replace the yards with any lawn but wanted to have a drought tolerant landscape in the front and back. Marty was very patient with us since we really wanted to take our time making gradual decisions at each phase of the work. Marty gave us a tremendous amount of help and guidance with the design and choices in trees and plants. The trees and plants we wanted more or less of, were brought in and arranged before being planted. The workers of Heedeland were very professional and polite. In our front yard, Heedeland extended our driveway and poured in new steps to the front porch. He arranged a front yard with a little river rock, shredded redwood, new drip system, and the right amount of variety of trees and plants that turned out awesome! In the back yard, he put in stamped concrete with a nice color tone, a new patio cover, a small modest fire pit and redwood vegetable box surround by a DG walkway. Around all that is a new drip system under the shredded redwood base. Some fruit trees, evergreens, along with some very nice ornamentals were arranged that turned out great! HeedeLand Landscape Company was coincidentally paving over two grass strips in my neighbors's driveway. After seeing their excellent work I decided to have them overhaul my whole front yard. I had them rip out the entire grass area, a tree and some bushes. Then they added a small walkway out of crushed concrete, concrete stairs leading up to my house and new trees and planter areas. Besides having to redirect the old sprinkler system I also had them cut out some of my concrete slap from my backyard patio to make room for another tree. Oh yes, I also had them replace my grass strips in my driveway with pavers. Marty worked from a plan that I drew up and gave me advise on how to proceed with my plan. Marty and the crew were extremely easy going, professional and reliable. Every day upon completion of their work they clean up instead of leaving the site looking like a construction zone. His workers are very loyal and know what they are doing. This is the first company I ever had to work with that wholeheartedly deserved five stars. An exemplary company and crew. I can not say enough praise in their favor. I requested Marty to keep me informed throughout the process which he did without delay. My front yard now steals the show and neighbors and people that pass by it admire the job that I credit Marty and his crew. Would I recommend them for any other job? Without hesitation, it would be the only landscape company that I would and will hire from now on. One item that I forgot to mention and it might be important to you is that they are honest to the tee. Should you change your mind about having to move a plant 2 centimeters over, they will charge you for it, but they will also deduct any overestimated and unused material from the bill. I have a very large yard and gardens. I hired HeedeLand to do the mowing, blowing and edging. So far I have had nothing but good service with this company. Marty, the owner is very conscientious and easy to work with. He and his crews communicate well and are open to any suggestions I make. It took the first two times they were here to get everything conveyed to exactly how I wanted it done but since then I have no complaints. They are on time and professional. When I had problems with one of my controllers which was installed some time ago Marty sent our David who is their "sprinkler guy". He had the problem fixed in no time and took the time to go over the unit with me so if it happened again I could adjust it myself. Shortly after that there was a problem with a sprinkler station that was on a different controller and wouldn't shut off. David was sent out within a short period of time and had the problem taken care of.
