This place makes In N Out look like Alpo! The burger was AMAZING! Fries had the perfect amount of salt. Shake was thick, but drinkable. Staff was friendly! We got there 10 mins till closing, not only did they still serve us, but they let us sit there unbothered eating until we were ready to do. Greeted us with a smile, and smiles as we left. My wife and I were staying at a hotel just down the street and decided to give it a try. I also asked the front desk what they thought of this joint and immediately their eyes lit up praising how good their burgers were. Anyways, we went in and was immediately greeted by the family who runs the business. Besides the burgers, they also had a fish burger and even Teriyaki Chicken over rice. I orded a Double-Bacon Mushroom Swiss burger and straight killed it. Their fries are really good. The way they package them for take-out makes them super greasy and basically dripping on to everything. Building: The place is hard to find without GPS. Basically look for the Subway Sandwiches sign past the Courtyard/Marriot and past Yoshino's. It's a small space with a classic diner feel. Service: It feels like a family business. I finally came back after being in Texas for seven years and I can't believe it took me a year and a half to have a Hegen Burger. I just love that name. Love the burger. It is an honest burger with real meat, cooked to order, on a fresh bun, with hand cut crunchy lettuce and and tomato and just the right amount of mayo. (I have them add ketchup, too). It is just an old fashioned, well-made burger. I see the suckers lined up for miles to go to the in-and-out across the street and it makes me mad that that chain has clearly taken business away from the EXTREMELY nice people who run this joint. Everything was prepared fresh to order (about a ~10 min wait when the restaurant was not crowded... well worth it), piping hot, not greasy, and delicious! The chili had wonderful flavor and a decent kick; the 1/3 lb. Hegenburger burger was tender and juicy with surprisingly good quality meat and fresh toppings; the curly fries were hot and well-seasoned. So after years of driving past this joint I decided to get a bite to eat at Hegenburger. The spot being in Oakland has that ghetto charm. Gotta have the bars on your buisnes. This place is on the other side of 880 and not the side where The Oracle is, so it's not in that bad of a neighoorhood. What this place lacks in charm makes up for in good greasy eats. I got a nice juicy burger, crispy fries, small chili and drink all for less then 10 bucks. All the ingredients were great on the burger, nice green lettuce, nice sliced red tomato and onion. You can choose one of 5 cheeses for your burger, plus lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mayo, mustard, and ketchup. And fries. Delicious, perfectly crispy, hot, lightly salted fries. My wife got the mushroom burger combo (11.00/ with drink) with onion rings. They were just as hot and tasty, with a side of ranch, just the way she likes them. The very hospitable cashier brought out our orders and the with one bite, you'll know you've hit the jackpot. The only things missing from this incredible burger were a truckload of napkins, the 10 or so that were on our trays weren't even close to being enough, and a Lipitor for our congested arteries. The juices from the burgers run right down your hands and arms, reminding you what a real burger tastes like. For OG's like my wife and I, this brought us back to our youth, when places like this were the norm and easy to come by. We just had our first meal here and we will be back for more, the teriyaki plate another patron had looked incredible. Everything is made fresh, so it may take a little while to get your food, but believe me, it is WORTH THE WAIT! The owners are really friendly, and I believe they just recently had their son start working there....anyway, they're always sure to remember you if you go in regularly. This the best go to spot before an As game, or previously Warriors game. There are still plenty of concerts at Oracle Arena. I highly recommend eating here prior to a Coliseum event. Not a terrible burger but not a fantastic burger, but everything aside, how can you really complain at the bottom of the barrel prices that they charge? For only a about $4, you can get yourself an entire burger with the fixings & cheese added for a minimal surcharge amount. Add some fries into the mix and you're talking about just about the same prices you'd be paying at various fast food burger joints. I wouldn't make a special trip here but if you're in the Oakland Airport area and are in need a good down to earth burger made by some nice Korean owners, you're in for a treat. I originally heard about this place from a Daily Review article that raved that this was the best "burger for the price" and the "most satisfying" in the Bay Area. I love this place for a quick bite. This fights with the 1/3 lb. Giant Burger on Doolittle for my favorite burger place in the area. But the cops come here more often, so that kind of tells you something =D Hegenburger offers all the essential menu items in a hole in the wall burger joint, with a few bonuses thrown in, like Chicken Teriyaki. Compared to 1/3 Lb. Giant Burger, the selection is smaller, and the chicken teriyaki is not that great... you don't get a lot of chicken, and the sauce is glopped on. It's not horrible, but you could do better easily. But that's not why you come here-- you come here for the burgers. What you get here is a good, solid burger with fresh condiments by and large, but the tomatoes are hit or miss sometimes. They're rather stingy with the mushrooms, but at least they're fresh! Service is pretty good too. What I like most about this place is that the burgers are dripping, but not in a bad way. They're not too salted, so the meat is juicy but not overwhelming. The chicken burgers aren't too bad either-- they're grilled and crisp on the outside, and you're getting a pretty good sized piece here. One other thing is that the fries here are better than the ones over at 1/3-- they're the McDonald's/In N' Out fries, as opposed to the steak fries type. This place is really basic-- no frills, which means it can be a little dark inside. You're definitely not here for the ambiance, but you are here for a good solid burger with good service. I have eaten here numerous times over the past 25-yrs. I ate lunch here today.So, I owe this a review. Still one of the best burgers in the east bay (I like Fudruckers and The Counter too). Nothing fancy but a 1/3rd pound burger, sesame-seed bun and a nice order of fries (shoe-strings) for their Hegenburger combo. Excellent burger,nice fixuns (no cheap quantities). Dressed w/mayo (as burgers should be). Service is quicker than I used to remember (it was almost always a good 20-minutes,so they have improved cooking times). They voluntarily do the burger well done (as the guidelines ask for). But I always ask for med-rare, which mine was done to. What has changed, was pricing. Now, the combo (w/tax) is about 10-bucks. Highest I can remember. Everyone has increased prices, so it is more a sign of the times and not this establishment only. I gave them 4-stars for the burger being a bit more expensive and my table was a bit "ratty" (needed cleaning badly - I had to wipe it down myself). But everything else was excellent. Seriously, if you want a burger in the Oakland area (especially near the Oakland AP), this is your best bet on not being hungry after eating a burger combo. read more
