Portions are huge! One plate could probably feed 2 people. Given its more rice than anything, but the meat portions are fairly large as well. You will definitely have leftover rice. Flavor wise, for this type of cuisine, it's good but I like more spices. It is very tender and moist. Hummus was bland. Barley soup was not our cup of tea with the minty notes. It would have been better without the strong mint flavor. Our first time trying this place during COVID and they mixed up our order with someone else's. We ordered a beef koobideh but got a beef and chicken mix. We also ordered lamb but I think they gave us beef instead. Yet we were still charged for our original order. To be clear, come here for the food. The ambiance is fine, the service is lacking, but the food was great. These were seriously the best chicken kabobs ($16) I have had. We also got the Beef barg ($22). We also enjoyed the barg, but the chicken was more flavorful. We also got the gmeimeh Bademjoon, which is an eggplant stew ($18). Probably could have done without this dish. We also got must o musir, which is a flavorful yogurt ($6). This was also tasty. The service was not great. The servers were very nice, but after ordering, didn't see them again and had to go up to the counter since they never brought our drinks and basically had to beg for the bill. One of the rare REAL halal restaurants in Southern California. Source of the halal meat was verified. I can count less than 5 ""verified"" halal places in Southern California and this is one of them and maybe the best! tl;dr: hot, fresh, fast, good persian food. ive been here twice. the first, i got kebobs and zerekspolo (rice with barberries). the kebobs were fresh and charred and the rice was cooked well. i would have liked the rice to be topped with tahdig but, i suppose i can't get everything. i tasted some of the fesenjoon from friend. it was good, but nothing i couldn't do at home. for those not familiar with persian food, it will be delicious. the second time i split a kebob and steak with a friend. the kebob was as i remembered it. the steak was good but nothing special - honestly, i would have rather had two kebobs. we also ordered the noodle soup. it was delicious. the prices are reasonable. the service is fast but on both occasions the restaurant was pretty empty and it was still hard to get the waiter's attention. read more

Went to dinner with our office staff of 6 the other night. The food was delicious and the servings were huge, definitely enough for another meal the next day! I love Mediterranean food, i can literally eat it everyday, but this wasn't it at all. Everything was bland down to the pita bread. The bread was so thin, when it got cold it got hard like chips. They didn't have tabouleh salad which is my fave, so the waitress suggested the other salad that starts with an S i forgot the name but it literally was just chopped cucumber, onion, and tomato. Ive never been to a Persian/Mediterranean restaurant with no yogurt based sauce. Their lentil soup was so off. I don't know but there was a hint of mint in it that made it taste super weird. The texture was slimy, it was just borderline not edible. The basmati rice was bland, I asked for saffron, but there was none. The meat was somewhat decent hence the 2 stars, otherwise one is enough. We ordered the burnt rice, the server didn't bring it out and didn't inform us that they didn't have it. When we paid, they didn't give us an itemized bill so I had to ask for it and they still charged us for the item not received so I asked for them to refund it. The cashier even stated that she thought it was weird that the server punched the item in when she knew there wasn't any, but didn't think about mentioning it when my mom paid at the register til I looked at the itemized one. Finally had time to write on here. I absolutely love this place! We are regulars here. We come once a week on friday or saturday. The food is delicious and the service is great ! The portion size is very generous. 1 plate is enough for two people that are starving lol. I get the koobideh combo. It comes with a big plate of rice and if your sharing they will put it in two separate plates for you. 2 big pieces of koobideh You can do beef, lamb or chicken comes with 1 grilled tomato and pepper. We usually get 1 chicken one beef. It does come with a side of salad, fries or soup. We get fries and it comes on a plate with a lot of fries. BEST FOOD so good! flavors are rich. read more

In a word: No. the food was so bad we had to fix it ourselves. Specifically, the hummus and baba ganoush were surprisingly flavorless. Texture was fine. But there was no discernible lemon or garlic. Each was just a different style of mush (the baba ganoush did have a nice smoke tho). We asked for some lemons, we were given limes. Whatever. We squoze as much as we could, tasted it, then had to ask for salt. We DIY-ed it to edibility at least, but still, no garlic. The veggie kebab was pretty insulting. I get that this place emphasizes meats, but so do a lot of places that can still manage to adequately prepare a vegetable. The pasilla-esque chili, tomato, onion & zucchini were fine. I'm pretty confident the broccoli was from frozen, and the carrots were the kind sold as "baby carrots," which for some reason I can't put my finger on suggests a lack of effort to me. I also got a side of naan, but nothing to dip the naan in except the soup of course. Overall, my meal was really good and pretty affordable at less than $10 for the entire meal. If you're vegan or vegetarian please stay away. They will assure you there is no meat in a dish and then serve you a dish with picked out pieces of meat and meat chunks just hovering in your food. When I confronted them about it, she said oh yeah we just pick the meat out of it when someone orders it without meat. Yeah maybe notify your customers ahead of time so they could decide for themselves if that's something they are okay with or not. The waitress then went to speak with her manager for quite some time and all you can hear from the distance was management or whoever she was yelling at the poor waitress. The funny part is no accommodations were made and no decency to apologize. At this point we were ready to leave after waiting for quite some time and the waitress never came back to check on us or bring the bill. Heidar Baba is and has always been my favorite restaurant. The food is consistently delicious and filling, there is always enough for leftovers. The portions are HUGE, so come hungry! I highly recommend the salmon or the shish kabob. There's also a lunch special on weekdays, if you're ever in the mood to save some money. They do dine in and carry out orders too, if you're on the go. They prepare the food to order, and it doesn't take any more than 15 or 20 minutes. Even better than the food is the service! All the waitresses are attentive and 100% helpful. They answer any questions you have about the menu and really try their hardest to give you the best possible service.
