DO NOT BRING YOUR PET HERE!!! The vet convinced me to remove my dog's anal glands at the same time he was getting neutered because it was "good for my dog and simple." Well, my dog ended up needing three follow up procedures and nearly died from this vet's attempts at correcting his inability to properly remove the glands. After the second complication I took him to a different vet that finally took proper care of my little guy, however it cost $6,000. So about $8,000 dollars later between the two vets, my dog survived this "simple" procedure. My new vet was horrified to hear what Moses did to my dog and said the procedure was entirely unnecessary and a HUGE risk to take. Moses is just in it to milk you and will risk your pet's life!!!! I took my cat here 6 years ago after she experienced bleeding. After about $1,000 of tests and scans, we learned that she had bladder stones. They performed the very expensive surgery and my overall vibe was eh, they aren't very nice, but I went on my way. 6 years later, I've moved neighborhoods and been to a variety of vets around the city. My cat experienced a series of seizures last week so as a result, I've been pulling her files from each office for her new vet. Today I called the Heights Veterinary Clinic and not only are they unable to email my cat's file to me as they DO NOT HAVE A COMPUTER, they apparently throw out files older than 5 years old. Take your pet somewhere that embraces modern technology, treats you with kindness and actually keeps the medical records. read more

We have taken our yorkie and pit bull to Dr. Thompson for several years and she has provided terrific care, always compassionate, knowledgeable and very gentle. Then she became seriously ill and her husband, Dr. Moses, took over the practice temporarily. On the rare occasion that we had seen him before, we didn't like his manner. Now, having to see him for every checkup and sick appt was an eye opener! I was so thrilled when Dr. Thompson returned, healthy. Having read many of the reviews here on Yelp, I felt compelled to add my own two cents. I more than agree with those who paint a picture of Dr. Moses as very rough, rude, and always looking to pad the bill. Whereas Dr. Thompson, for example, would be conscious of the fact that I live on my social security when she billed me (and I was thankful for her reduced charges), Moses would put charges on the bill of which I wasn't even aware! I can attest to all the many issues raised by reviewers: his real roughness with little dogs. Another example: my yorkie was dying and I wanted to hold him while we put him to sleep which had been the plan with Dr. Thompson.. But she wasn't in on the day it happened and Moses insisted that I put him on the table so he could inject him. I was too devastated to argue with him, so my little boy died in the table, not in my arms. On another occasion, I just called to get a prescription approved for heartworm medication for my new yorkie who had his last heartworm test in August, 2018. Dr. Moses, who is again covering for Dr. Thompson, refused to approve it because he likes to give heartworm tests in the spring. In other words, even though my dog doesn't need to be tested for another 4 months, he wants to collect the test fee and visit charge now! When I found out that Dr. Thompson was ill again and would no longer be practicing, I was devastated for her and for the many pet owners and pets who will be deprived of her great care. We will be taking our dogs to another veterinary office now. Dr. Moses provides unacceptable care, is rude, and quite frankly, in it for the money. It's too bad because he actually is a medically knowledgeable person. He just uses it for the wrong reasons. My prayers go out to Dr. Thompson and my gratitude goes out to the great staff who are kind and professional at all times. Thank you. read more

I hate to write such a bad review for a local business but as an animal lover I feel compelled. I brought a cat I found in my building in for an examination. The doctor seemed immediately sketched out that I brought in a stray and within a few minutes of the examination the cat that wasn't being held properly went a little haywire. As soon as the cat showed any sign of being uncomfortable he looked at me and told me that this cat had a "feral streak." He said he had to sedate the cat I said fine whatever makes it easier. He then emphasized that this cat is likely very feral and would be hard to find a home for him. I even started to believe him even though I know a lot about animals and this cat approached us. He came out to us and sat on my friends lap. We initially thought he was a neighbors lost cat which is why we brought him in.(and put up signs obv) AnyWho the Traumatic experience for myself and the cat ended when the doctor told me that I should consider getting him declawed DECLAWED(!!) and presented a bill of 850$. This was about a week before they made declawing illegal. A few days after this happened we actually found a couch that was destroyed outside our apartment by a cat and also there was a U-Haul so we are pretty sure he was abandoned. We have since adopted the cat and he has integrated into our home perfectly. His cuddles with us and our other cats daily. He is a little skittish so I don't think he was treated very well by his previous family. That being said I still can't believe this doctor told me that this cat was feral and that I should get him declawed. he has gotten along with our two existing cats and as well as ours and all our friends that have visited. I got an emergency appointment for 7/29/21 pretty quickly. I was nervous to hand over my senior cat,Tabith. He had been vomiting and bad breath plus, he was overdue for a visit to the vet. It was a rainy day and the carrier and the cat got wet. I like the fact that they had a window where I could see my cat as they took him out of the carrier. I felt comfortable with the staff and they gave me an estimate of the price which was about off by more than $100 than the actual cost around $990. It included his shots, cleaned his teeth, brushed him, did tests, gave him a shot for the vomit, put him asleep for the exam. They told me to come back in 45 mins due to Covid19, I can't come in. Everyone wore a mask.However, it took more than an 1.5 hour before my cat was awake enough to travel. I was so nervous when I saw Tabith struggling to raise his head. They let me inside, helped me get the cat back into the carrier, and gave me instructions to watch him and don't let him jump on anything. They called me on the Saturday to let me know his lab results were normal and to see how Tabith was doing. They said to try a different food to see what works but no serious issues. I was so relieved. It was expensive but I felt comfortable with this service and it was in my neighborhood. read more

Went on recommendation of a friend. From what I'm reading here-it seems that she had seen the female vet in the practice. vaccinated my pet without consent and then charged me: I will not be coming back to this vet and have expressed this to my neighbors and the place I adopted my cat from. This was my first time taking my cat for a checkup, which I was told to do within the first 30 days of having her. When the doctor asked why I was there, I expressed this. He looked at me like I was ridiculous and crazy. He immediately was asking me about vaccinations and immediately told me that she was missing 2. I informed him I wanted to contact the adoption people to see if there was any paperwork missing, so we can confirm if she needs it or has had it. If she needed it, I'd come back. I was not shown a vet order or even any prices. After two more conversations with him giving me MORE information on vaccinations, I continued to say I will come back if I need them. So I'm given a bill and have been charged for a vaccination...that I clearly did not want, ask for, and blatantly stated I did NOT want on that day. I immediately was furious and said "I never asked for one, he didn't ask me," to the nurse holding the bill. His response was "I thought you wanted one." The man waiting outside next to me backed me up and said "I heard your whole conversation with her and she clearly said no and didn't ask for any." I told them I was not paying for the vaccine and paid for the visit, although honestly...I shouldn't have had to pay a dime. When I said I wasn't paying for the vaccine he rudely said "FINE." I never got an apology for such a HUGE mistake. I would NEVER recommend this place, thank goodness it was something "as small as" a vaccine and not something more serious. This vet clearly will not fully listen to you and is just trying to make money off of you. read more

Had a really bad experience here. I brought my dog in for his yearly shots/physical. The male vet (I didn't get his name) was excessively rough with my dog and somewhat rude to me. As a result of his roughness, my dog started reacting badly, which caused the vet to be rougher and begin to yell at him. As I tried to calm my dog down, the vet started yelling at ME for "encouraging him." He muzzled him with a VERY tightly tied rope (ROPE!), and my dog could barely breathe and was clearly panicking. Then he couldn't find my dog's veins, and he (the vet) got increasingly hostile, and stuck my dog at least 10 times trying to find blood. It was a terrible experience for both my dog and for me (I actually had to sit down on my way out because I was so upset that *I* almost passed out). What's possibly even worse is that I mentioned my dog had been sick lately. The vet didn't seem to care, and did nothing. 4 days later, I had to take my dog to the ER for vomiting and diarrhea, which entailed xrays, sedation, and fluids. I've never encountered a vet that seems to hate animals so much. It's unfortunate, because the tech and the receptionist were very nice, and treated my dog well. We had to take our cat for a few visits for them to steal my money, not figure out what's wrong with him, and essentially watch him die, all for the bargain price of near $1000. Zero stars. This is the worst vet I've ever been to and I know because I've gone to them multiple times as I have an elderly dog on the same block. Every single time has been unsatisfactory and problematic. They even misdiagnosed my first dog which ultimately led to his death. Several times he's saved a cats life with the correct diagnose and immediate action. in one instance, "Rocky" , our street cat just wasn't acting right, He wasn't eating or drinking or putting up a fight when we put him in the carrier. Dr. Moses did an x-ray and called us an hour later. Operating immediately, he saved Rockys life. Curious little Rocky had eaten a nice, crunch piece of clear plastic that lodged in his stomach blocking everything, which Dr. Moses removed. We had Rocky for ten more years. I came to the site tonight to get the phone number for a neighbor, and, even though it is late, I have to share my experience with Dr. Thompson. I thought I had shared my comments at the time but am adding this now because it would be very unfair to let the negative comments appear without sharing my totally opposite experience. I originally read through all the comments and decided that I wanted to take my pet there in spite of the negative reviews because the positive ones rang true for me. I am glad that I did. I took one of my two my cats in last summer for an acute and complex emergency and, even though I explained that they have been seen for years by a home vet who happened to be out of town, she was very caring and capable. And when the lab tests came back, she took a lot of time with me over the phone discussing the results. I strongly recommend Dr. Thompson. She inspired confidence and took good care of my pet. read more

As far as I can tell, this vet is perfectly competent. But I haven't been here in a year and now travel a half-hour downtown to go to a much better vet. Why? This vet was curt and didn't seem to care about the cat at all, just getting his job done as quickly as possible. (The full yearly checkup was done in under 5 minutes, for which we paid $70.) The vet spent another few minutes trying to guilt us into getting unnecessary vaccinations and extra blood tests to test for a disease the cat has already tested negative for. He also tried to get us to agree to a teeth-cleaning for a 3-year-old cat, and told us that dry food (we feed a mix of wet and dry) is "full of carbs" so we shouldn't use it. I've since learned from better vets that what you have to worry about with dry food is not carbs (the cat is at a healthy weight) but the cat getting enough water, and that wet food is worse for cats' teeth. I left feeling like a horrible person, but also indignant that this man had so blatantly tried to wring us for all the money he could get. I happily pay for tests and treatment at the new vet, because she clearly has the kitty's best interests at heart, not her own. read more

UPDATE: I called to get to know this vet. Like any good pet owner, I've several questions before I bring my pet in. First call: Vet tech was busy, vet was also busy. I was promised a call back. Second call: 1 week later, called back. A different vet tech chatted w/me but, as she herself is not the vet, could not answer my questions. Told me to call back Monday at noon. Third call: Called back Monday at 12:15; the vet had apparently just left. Tech took my name and number and said the vet would call me later today or tomorrow. The call never came. ========================= 4 stars based solely on the below experience -- I've not actually been to this clinic... Today, Saturday, around 4pm, a big dog attacked a much littler dog outside my building. Hearing the melee, I ran outside to help (I know a bit about dogs), the owners had apparently YANKED the dogs apart (wrong move; FYI: when dogs fight, each owner should grab the back legs in wheelbarrow position -- this almost always works to split them up), leaving a chunk yanked from the little dog. I took the little dog owners number, ran upstairs and called THREE clinics: Inwood vet didn't answer (although I think they were open), a recording gave an "emergeny number" which I called -- but that was USELESS) Washington Heights Animal Hospital didn't seem to understand what the word "emergency" means and the girl, talkign slowly and not getting that I was kinda in a rush, wanted to give me the SAME "emergency number" as above which was USELESS (yes,in caps again) My vet (who's in the Bronx) is closed Saturday afternoon. Called Heights Vet Clinic, spoke w/Jocelyn. She got it. Made sure w/the vet that the dog could be brought in, and cleared me to tell the owner to head on over. The guy ran his dog over, and they were suturing her up and taking care of her when I checked in later. I might have a new vet! read more

Please please please do NOT bring your precious animal here! I was reminded to write a review because I am still paying off the obscene bill I was handed by the evil scammer "Dr Moses". I discovered a lump on my 3 year old cats neck that has virtually appeared overnight. I had assumed he has gotten it from play fighting with my other cat. Anyway we took him into the vet because we were worried. Dr Moses handled my cat extremely roughly. He could clearly sense the vulnerability in 2 young girl's worried about their pet and decided to take FULL advantage of that. He tried to convince us our cat might have cancer and so needed a biopsy, multiple tests, basically everything under the roof. I had done my research and everything pointed to it being an abscess. However we were being told by a professional that it was something else and so went along with. Our cat went into surgery that day and we received a phone call saying it was in-fact just a an abscess and only puss was coming from it. HOWEVER we were still charged well over a THOUSAND dollars for cancer tests when even the nurse told us it 100% wasn't cancer because it was just puss and no actual tumor. To make matters worse, he didn't even get the puss out. The lump was still as large as it was when we bought him in. When we called Dr Moses on the phone, he said it would be another $300 plus for him to remove the remaining abscess. It's like he did it on purpose so he could charge us more. When we said he should have drained it properly, he told us to it ourselves by cutting open our cats neck (no joke). We were absolutely mortified. What kind of vet does this? We were charged so much money and he did absolutely nothing for our cat. We ended up taking him somewhere else and the vet there told us, our cat had been treated poorly and the abscess hadn't been drained properly which is why it came back. They were shocked when we told them the story. It was a minor procedure and shouldn't have cost what it did. This guy has no business being a vet and this place should not exist. He was rude, unprofessional and clearly only cares about making money off people worried about their pets. I wish I could give his place 0 stars. The ONLY positive thing was that the nurses were very sweet. They clearly do care about the animals and I urge them to find a more reputable clinic to work at. Please avoid this place at all costs. Your pet won't get the treatment they need and you will be scammed out of your hard earned money. There are many other reputable vets in the Washington Heights area that truly care about the wellbeing of your animal, this disaster of a place is certainly not one of them. read more

I wish I would have listened to the reviews on here and not brought my cat to the vet. The whole experience was terrible. When I was brought into the exam room the vet did not even introduce himself so I don't even know who examined my cat. During the exam people kept on walking in and out of the exam room which frightened my cat. I don't know where the tech was but the vet made me have to hold my cat down while he gave her injections which I was not comfortable doing and he kept on telling me that I wasn't doing holding her down right (well I'm not a vet tech!) And then he pressured me about getting so like 3 extra vaccinations and when I said no he was very cold. I have been to 4 other vets before and this experience was terrible, I will never go there again. read more

i have taken my highly neurotic dog to this vet several times and it has been a very pleasant experience. The vet is incredibly well informed and explained what shots the dog needed. The place is not fancy but who cares if the care is good. I'm not buying the place I am looking for good care for my dog. It took me awhile to find a vet when i first moved to the neighborhood. The previous vet was in the low 100's and he spent the entire time trying to sell me useless things after I told him that I was there for him to treat the dog's ear infection. HORRIBLE! WILL HURT YOUR PET! STAY AWAY!! I brought my tiny rescued puppy to these awful vets. My puppy had started limping. I told the vets that she had been abused and needed to be treated gently. The female vet examined her first. She was rude and un -sympathetic. She said the pup only needed muscle relaxers that I should buy from them (for alot of money). When I questioned this she got very nasty. (The limping had gone on a week and was CAUSED by something that needed to be addressed). Vet said she'd bring male vet in for second opinion. The male vet was VERY rough with her. When she growled (because he HURT HER) He insisted on using ROUGH ROPE tied so tight I could see it was cutting off blood to her snout and digging in to her tiny snout and head! When I said he had tied this scary looking rope (They won't even spend money on a proper little nylon muzzle? what else are the doing on the cheap--with their "medicine"?) too tightly, he yelled "Just get out!", and threw my records on the floor. I took my puppy to a real vet (Dr K at Riverside Animal Hospital on 225 W 108th st--not the one in Wash. Hts!) who found she had a herniated disc and had to be on bed rest for many months. Dr Thompson, the women is very kind and professional. Dr Moses her husband is an egomaniac. He vaccinated my dog without permission, she had already been vaccinated by another vet. And they made me pay for it. On another occasion he was try to get a urine sample from my dog and squeezed her so hard she was urinating blood on the way home. We tried to only make appts with the Dr Thompson, but there were times when we felt it neccessary to take our dog in right away and got Dr Moses, so we changed vets. ONLY SEE DR. THOMPSON! read more

I would describe Dr. Moses as a man incapable of performing his duties as a veterinarian. I brought my cat to him who has mild to moderate urinary cystitis for a routine checkup. Moses couldn't manage to draw blood from my cat's leg as many other vets I have been to have easily done. His shaky hands and rough manner caused a large hematoma to form under the skin around the site of the needle puncture on my cat's leg. Unable to take this routine blood draw, he sedated my cat with ketamine and took blood from the artery in his neck. This required shaving the cat. He entered the neck artery just as shakily as the leg and took his time fishing around with the needle. He also drew urine via a bladder puncture that visibly hurt my cat even under sedation. This appointment brings me pain even to this day when I look back at it. I'm angry at Moses for his gruffness, his cruelty, and his incompetence. Never again. read more

I really dislike this Vet. I usually take my pup to the Humane Society of New York where it's not only affordable but the doctors and staff actually care about your pet. The vet on 181st only cares about getting money out of you. While I was there , apparently they had a doggy in the back room in one of the cages. The doggy kept crying and banging himself against the cage. They did nothing to reassure or calm him. He could have gotten hurt. I went there because I had an emergency with my doggy and got charged an arm and a leg. Don't go there! Go to vets that actually care about your pet! read more

Seriously, I think this Vet hates animals. And the person saying that (me) is not remotely an over the top pet/animal lover. He recommended a declawing of the cat. He recommended that we take the cat back to the shelter, from which we had gotten her just 5 days before. The cat is frisky, but improving every day. He said the cat may injure my daughter right in front of my daughter. We all walked out hating this guy, the cat, and the rest of us. Just an unpleasant person, unpleasant experience. The young girls who assist and schedule appts. are all extremely caring and attentive. The two vets themselves have always treated my cats with care, especially Dr. Thompson. read more

We have used Jan and Jay for our dogs (and cats) for the 25 years they have been in the neighborhood (except for a few years when they lived in the Berkshires). They are both highly competent, they consult with each about diagnoses, etc., think out loud, making plain the reasons for their decisions/advice. Jay is a very skillful surgeon too, as he has demonstrated a number of times with nasty cuts, growths, etc. read more

I brought Bella, my rescue pup, for a nail clipping. Dr. Moses was attentive, patient with my lack of experience, and took the time to explain when and how nails need to be trimmed. His bedside manner was professional and he was patient with his assistants, guiding them how to best handle Bella, who is 13 lbs. of squirming muscle. read more

I was very unhappy with my experience here. During a routine cleaning, Dr. Moses extracted three teeth from my cat's mouth without discussing the possibility with me first or asking my permission. He had asked me during the exam if I wanted my cat to get a vaccination for respiratory disease, and I clearly said no, explaining that my cat never goes outside and never gets exposed to other cats. He administered the vaccine anyway and charged me for it. The bill was so large {$500, for what I thought would be just a standard cleaning} that I didn't notice it until later. When I called to complain, his business associate, Dr. Thompson, told me that since he had done it, I had obviously given my permission. When I told her that I had clearly said it wasn't necessary, she replied that he had had to administer the vaccine anyway because "it's important", When I said, regardless, you had no right to administer a vaccine that I had specifically refused, I was invited to take my business elsewhere. Stay away from this place! We had a really terrible experience here. In the past we have only had the woman vet, but last week we had the man vet. He was rude, dismissive and aggressive. Without any warning he started grabbing my dog so hard behind his neck. My dog started making yelping/whining noises I've never heard before The vet then told my husband and I it was our fault because we were trying to calm him down-claiming we were encouraging him. He proceeded to grab him rough two more times until my husband told him he had to stop and wasn't allowed to treat an animal like this. Thank god he spoke up because I was in shook. The vet then mocked us and said he would do it our way because we knew better. Terrible. This man has no compassion for animals or people. I have never written a review on Yelp-but for the safety of your pet, stay away from this place! We left in the middle of the appointment and our dog walked home with his tail between his legs. Be warned with this clinic. They are very unprofessional, Impatient, and mostly concerned with making money. They will try to convince you to run numerous tests that add up to several hundreds of dollars that do nothing to help your pet but only help their bottom line. In my case, the vet insisted I culture my cat's eye discharge to make sure the antibiotic she prescribed was the correct one. I was told that the results would be in in 3-5 days, enough time to make a change if the 7 day cycle of antibiotics she prescribed was wrong. I paid $150 for this. 9 days later I still hadn't heard from her and I called to ask for my money refunded, since the culture was moot. She refused. 6 months later when my cat was very sick, stopped eating and couldn't stand up, she refused to see my cat, said she didn't feel we got along and told me I should go elsewhere. There are other clinics in Washington heights and most people agree you should go there instead. read more

I was extremely disappointed in this vet. I went for my first visit with my kitty. My kitty had diarrhea and blood in it's stool I brought a stool sample and they never even checked it. The tech and the receptionist were very nice, but the vet was SOOOOO extremely rude. Then she tells me the kitten probably has giardia and that she's going to treat for that as well. I told her that I wasn't comfortable giving my kitten some treatment not knowing if that's what he had. So I asked her how she knew she had it? She got really defensive telling me that it's her experience and she's worked with so many kittens and sees it all the time, and then she leaves the room. At that point I don't know what's going on and the receptionist came in and talked to me to explain things to me telling me that the treatment is $30 while the test is $200 so that's why the vet was probably trying to get me to do the treatment, which made sense. So I said, well I just want to know if there's any harm to the kitten if he gets the treatment and doesn't have it, and she says she'll get the doctor. At which point the doctor says she will send it out to be tested, and refuses to even discuss the treatment saying that that's not an option for me anymore. I ask why and she says that it's because of my statement that "I wasn't comfortable giving the treatment without the test" and I said that I wasn't comfortable because she hadn't explained it to me, and she tells me it doesn't matter because at that point my option is to get the test or not. So I tell her I didn't want "her" to do the test, and she walks out without saying anything. So I speak with the receptionist again and she tells me to do the deworming and see if the diarrhea goes away, and then I can do the test. I ask what the consequences are of not doing the treatment if she has it, and she says she'll ask the doctor, at which point she just comes back with the number to a 24-hour clinic. I paid $80 to be treated so rudely, to be told that maybe my cat may have something, without a test done, and I left there with no more information then I came in with. Now I have to go to another vet and pay for another office visit. I will not be going back. The receptionist was extremely helpful and very nice, but other than that the place was really not properly kept, everything was super old, and the vet was EXTREMELY rude! I'm not happy with the service provided. The male vet isn't friendly. He doesn't offer advise he basically decides for you. It seems that he's interested more on the amount he's going to charge then your feeling towards your current situation. I've gone there twice and I can honestly say I went there because of the receptionist. She's so friendly, caring and knowledgable. This is my first time owning a kitten and I really don't know much about cats. I tried asking him questions and he would just go around in circles. My Kitty has an eye infection and that was my main concern. The first visit he got his vaccines,blood work, clipped his claws, deworming meds, antibiotics, and eye ointment and my bill was $320. I think that was somewhat reasonable( not according to my friends and family they've payed way less). Then I brought him again yesterday (4/26)because of the ongoing eye infection. I called before I decided to go there and his friendly receptionist transfer me immediately to him.That was nice. Then I asked him what should I do with my kitty recurring eye infection? I have follow his previous instruction to the T and it would go away and few days latter it would come back. I just wanted an advise over the phone to avoid another bill. He told me to bring him in for an eye culture. I asked him how much it was going to be? He didn't want to quote me a price all he said was I'm only doing and eye culture and it depends if he needs something else. Of course why say it over the phone if I would've known the price I would've found another vet. Well innocent me I when in for an "eye culture" and he literally took a swab and he took a sample. Then he look at at his eyes and my bill was $130. No New meds! I'm still using the same eye ointment of last time. Now I have to wait a week for my results. Really?!?! I spent $20 on cabs plus and extra 130 for basically a simple eye culture. Oh and he wants me to go back. I've spent $450 in 5 weeks plus what I've spent on my own buying him his basic needs. What bothers me the most is that my kitten stills has the eye infection. Most of my friends and family have only spent $125 to 250 including everything I've mentioned. They are very expensive and if at least the vet would be friendly and interested In our concerns I wouldn't mind but I won't go back. That's for sure! read more
