Walked here for breakfast on a rainy day and it seemed very popular! I ordered an iced raspberry latte and it was absolutely perfect. Not a lot of places have raspberry flavoring but it's always a hit and not too sweet. I also ordered the breakfast burrito with potatoes. I did like the burrito but the beans were sopping wet and overpowering so it instantly collapsed after one bite. I recommend asking for less beans or if they were drained better before being placed in the burrito. I ended up eating it with a fork+knife and it was good that way! read more

Heirloom Bakery was wonderful in every way! Because it has outdoor seating, I could bring my dog. They even asked if my pup needed water! The breakfast menu is incredible and portions are generous. I loved the egg sandwich. It was HUGE and so delicious. The other people I went with had only good things to say about the avocado toast and vegan breakfast burrito (as meat eaters, they loved the vegan version of chorizo). At the end, we ordered pastries to take him and they did not disappoint! We could hear live music from across the street which added to the ambiance. Even though you're sitting right across from the light rail, you don't notice the sounds when a train passes. The carrot cake was tasty. But ordered the breakfast salad. BIG MISTAKE. the poached egg and bacon were nice. but the cup of dressing made it virtually inedible. for the price. Get your ratios right. The bus lady recommended ordering the dressing on the side... great advice after the fact. And brought me a plate of lettuce but honestly didn't help much. very disappointing. read more

I will never go to this place again, even though they are very close to me. Waiting time was exorbitant even though I was right there in front of them. Twice! I gave them a second chance about a year later and nothing had changed. Food was good but the wait was crazy. My sister lives nearby and recommended Heirloom when I asked for an outdoor dining rec. I'm so glad we came! This is a delightful lunch/brunch/breakfast/snack/dessert spot! Our group of 9 show up and the staff let us move a table to accommodate us on the outdoor patio. The entire outdoor area is covered and shady, so even though it was around 95 degrees out, it felt perfectly comfortable. This place is very dog-friendly with water bowls (staff and customers also kept saying "don't worry" when they had to step over our big guy's body that was sticking out in the walkway). Order at the counter and they bring your food to the table (another perk with a large group instead of splitting the bill). Service was friendly. Food was delicious. In addition to the menu items, they have a bunch of prepared foods in the deli case and bakery case. All looked AMAZING. I tried a number of different items but my gazpacho soup and zucchini quiche were so good. The creamy potato salad was perfect. Someone bought a pack of cinnamon sugar crisps. So good! Ordered take-out on a Sunday. I called half an hour before for 3 sandwiches, the Cuban, the caprese, and chicken pesto. On the phone, the lady told me that they'll be ready in 20 mins and I showed up 30 mins later and they're not ready. This place is always packed so I expected that especially on a weekend. However, what I didn't like about it is that the cashier and front counter seemed so disorganized. At least when I was waiting in line to pay for my order, I noticed a few people in front of me kept asking for items that they ordered and the staff had missed to bring them. Anyways, I paid and went outside to wait for my order to be brought to me because it was way too crowded inside and the staff were talking over each other. I waited another 25 minutes for the Ofer to be brought out (so it took them almost a whole hour) to make the 3 sandwiches for take-out. With all the great reviews I was having high hope for the food. When I opened the boxes the presentation was not impressive at all. The Cuban was pretty salty. The filling in the caprese almost completely fell out from the baguette (and it was a pretty small portion for this one), and the bread was soggy at the bottle half of the chicken pesto (it was about 10mins since I got the order to when I opened the food). I wasn't impressed with the sandwiches, though they might have looked and tasted better if it was dine-in. However, I think their manager really needs to make the place more organized. It's way too hectic and stifling looking at the staff at the front counter and from the kitchen clamoring over each other to prepare orders. read more

Brought my mom here for a morning brunch and it did not disappoint! We love savory hearty foods and are coffee fiends, but also wanted to try something a little on the healthier end and shared a hearty breakfast!! -heart breakfast $11 Two poached eggs, these were well made! I'm not the biggest fan of poached eggs (but I realized this afterwards, I love a runny yoke- sunny side!) but it was still good especially with the substitute toast and tomato/beans/cheddar/rice/salsa! The beans were yummily made and very tasty with the rice and salsa mix and was easy on our digestion too!! The spinach croissant and poached eggs on toast are not to be discounted, to be reviewed upon next visit. I have a weird craving for carrot cake, especially for the cream cheese frosting and decided to pop in while I was in the area. Parking is not great here - I had to circle around to place 2x to find a spot. Carrot cake did not disappoint and could possibly be the best carrot cake I've ever had. It comes in the form of a giant cupcake and they are generous with the cream cheese frosting. This carrot cake had walnuts so beware if you have any nut allergies, but cake itself was so moist and sweetness level was acceptable for someone who hates sugar and thinks everything is too sweet. The cream cheese frosting was amazing and was a good balance for the barely sweet cake. 10/10 recommend the carrot cake. This was the only thing I tried here and I would come back for it. It wasn't too busy on a Sunday afternoon but staff/service was not the best. The lady who was at the register looked like she didn't want to be there and did not say a word when I was up next to order. I ordered and she gave me my carrot cake and that was it. This woman-owned establishment is located in an area with other small business, so you can walk around after and check out all the neat shops and boutiques. Plus, it's close to a Goldline stop so you can take the train here if you don't live in the neighborhood. In addition to baked goods (pastries, pies, cakes, cupcakes, cookies...oh my!), they also offer breakfast items, sandwiches, salads, pizzas, tea, coffee, and vegetarian selections. You can also get day old baked goods for 50% off. There is a covered outdoor patio where you can enjoy your meal or catch up with a friend over brunch. It's also dog friendly so you can grab a bite or a cup of coffee while walking your pup. There's free underground parking next-door and on the street. I stopped by the other day and ordered the chocolate pecan coffee cake to go. However, there were so many delicious items in the display case that were calling my name - Hostess Style Cupcake, Key Lime Pie, Coconut Cake. Yummmmm. When I got home the coffee cake was still warm. The cake part was very tender and most and it had a nice flavor. The melted chocolate swirl inside was perfect. The top was covered with toasted pecans mixed with chocolate and it provided a nice crunch. Overall, the cake was heavenly. This review is long overdue. I may be biased because (1) I live really close and (2) I think Sally is awesome! Staying with the food, everything from the pastries to the sandwiches to the soups are delicious. My go-to is the turkey meatloaf sandwich. The entire staff is friendly and welcoming. They get pretty busy on weekends and get bogged down, but they try to keep things moving the best they can. The ambiance is great! Just know that you're across the street from the metro rail so expect some noise from the metro passing by if you're sitting outside. If you have kids they'll love it. read more

I grew up coming to heirloom, and even though I've moved almost 30 miles away I'll make a trek here any day. They make the absolute best red velvet cupcakes in all of Los Angeles. I love the cream cheese frosting, and the cupcakes have the perfect balance of cocoa and moistness. All the pastries are delicious. This is a perfect place for brunch and a date if you want to catch up with an old friend and then stroll around Mission Street afterwards. I love heirloom! read more

This is, hands down, the best bakery/cafe/pâtisserie in the San Gabriel valley and maybe all of LA. Everything--and I mean EVERYTHING--here is outstanding, freshly prepared with pride, skill, the best ingredients available and love. I travel to France on a regular basis to visit my son and his family, and, after a month in Paris, I am itching to get back to Heirloom Bakery for my weekly breakfast there. It is the only place in the U.S. where I will order a croissant. And It is the only place I know of that makes a breakfast salad: fresh mixed greens and tomatoes, topped with parmesan cheese, two poached eggs and a savory dressing with bacon, balsamic vinaigrette and sautéed red onion. All of their breakfasts, sandwiches and side dishes are delicious, freshly prepared and generous (so much so, that you can order half-orders of many of the menu items) Their baked good are absolutely fantastic and their key lime pie is out of this world--perfectly balanced and not overly sweet. The atmosphere in the place is warm and welcoming, and there is a large wrap-around patio for those sunny California mornings and afternoons. The staff is friendly and attentive, and I always get a warm smile and greeting from Sally, the Chef and owner/operator of this jewel of a restaurant in South Pasadena. Delicious. Fresh. Variety. Friendly. Every meal I've gotten has been consistently great. I love the drinks menu, my favorite is the three part poetry tea blend. The desserts are delicately sweet and shareable, the portion is huge. People eat outside and order inside. The shaded outside area is nice to sit and eat at. Inside the restaurant is open and cool. Was visiting LA Mother's Day weekend and saw this cute little cafe and decided to give it a go. I wish I had read the reviews before having my sister in law and niece meet there because the service was terrible. The drinks were ok and the food wasn't the greatest. The decor was cute but that doesn't make up for inattentiveness from the staff and after waiting what seemed like an hour and going inside to find out what was going on with our food did I get yelled at "was it bakery or food" and when I answered bakery they were like whatever about it. For me, service is big so asking me with a rude tone what I ordered just wasn't it for us. I was embarrassed for bringing my family here and I was more embarrassed when they tried to shame me for not knowing the difference of what I ordered. Sorry. Bakery. Food. Whatever. I don't care what you consider it but I guess my cold ham and cheese croissant wasn't food but bakery items so it didn't matter that it took an hour to get us our stuff. I love this place... especially the old fashioned pastries, tarts and pies. Coconut cake is occasionally available and that is my fav. Sally makes pies in season, too, like when peaches come out in the spring and summer. The eggs and quiches are delicious and wholesome. I have ordered quiches for parties and that worked well. These are large and rich quiches, with a crust good enough to eat on its own. The coffee here is also consistently good, even just the plain old black coffee. Cute cafe bakery that we stopped by on a Saturday morning! They've got a pretty extensive breakfast menu and a number of fresh baked pastries. The ambience is really relaxed and the food quality was good. We ordered the Chorizo Scramble and Waffles with Bananas & Strawberries. The Chorizo Scramble was tasty and came with black beans, brown rice, and very toasted toast. It was quite yummy! The Waffles with Bananas & Strawberries were really good and what you'd expect. The waffle had a crisp bite, but also chewy. When paired with the bananas, strawberries and syrup, it was super yum! I've seen Heirloom get really crowded, but it was fairly empty when we got there at 9:00am. Nice location and outdoor seating options but big fails in terms of customer experience. Basic ordering is a challenge due to the fact that there is no single, sensibly-organized menu. Several items are posted on the wall in scrawling script which is both far and difficult to read. Other items are posted on the counter, or stuck to the glass showcase of the food display. Multiple cashiers hover behind the counter taking orders and explaining menu items to people. The confusion is obvious as people point to baked goods in the display, indicate the wall menu, ask about changes and options, listen to staff describe (yet) other menu specials, go back and forth....oy oy oy!! With such a changeable and fluid kitchen menu, the staff themselves are not fully appraised of how to place orders. They might slip up, or don't convey the order exactly to the back kitchen (which seems also disorganized). It's a trying experience. I had the misfortune of asking for an almond latte (listed among other types of lattes like hazelnut, vanilla etc.) only to have a back and forth with a bull-headed cashier lady who repeatedly stated they didn't have almond milk. I tried to convey to her that I didn't ask for a drink with almond milk, I just wanted the item posted on the list alongside other lattes, and she wasn't having it. Pay at the counter, get a number, then find a table. I sat down with my chocolate scone and a tea (I abandoned the coffee ordering exercise) I discovered their baking was terrible. The scone wasn't tearing apart it was literally like a hard biscuit crumbling apart. Poorly baked goods in a bakery?!! You lost me. When my quiche came I instantly felt the presentation was off because of the lackadaisical display of sliced raw tomatoes as a garnish. When I make quiches I use really good quality eggs and cheese and I can tell the difference. What I received was not a well-mixed egg custard possibly cheap egg mix. The mushroom filling was lacking and it was not cheesy enough. The crust was chunky around the edges, and not enough care was taken to line the crust evenly into the pan. The rosemary roasted potatoes saved the whole plate. I would not return to pay for this disappointing food when I myself make this stuff with so more finesse. It sucks to pay for sloppy baking. The bathrooms are shared and outside in a general building, so if you are trying to get the key it can be an ordeal considering the mayhem in the store and the servers' own scattered demeanor. read more

Absolutely love this place. We have been coming here for years and not only is the food delicious and they have a great variety on the menu, but truly our favorite part is the staff. They are warm and welcoming and it feels like you are having a meal with family. We went in to eat a few days ago and after putting ourselves on the waitlist I realized I had forgotten about a work meeting that day and didn't think we would have enough time to sit and eat. We went to take our names off the list and the host immediately got us a table and the lovely server made sure he got our order in and to us in enough time to enjoy and still make my meeting.
